Bob Newhart

US standup and sitcom star who exuded calm assurance in a career that spanned more than 50 years

Bob Newhart, who has died aged 94, employed a deadpan delivery, marked with a sometimes stammering hesitation, that made him an unlikely candidate to become one of America’s most successful comedians. It was in keeping with his character that his successes often went overlooked.

Newhart burst on to the scene with the 1960 release of The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart, a recording of his first-ever standup performance just months earlier. It shot to No 1 on record charts, followed six months later by The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back!, which rose to No 2, behind its predecessor. His debut won the 1961 Grammy as album of the year, the sequel won best spoken comedy album, and Newhart was named best new recording artist.

Newhart’s preferred format was the one-sided telephone conversation, where the audience’s understanding of what the speaker cannot see makes Newhart his own straight-man. Abraham Lincoln’s PR man in Washington tries to stop him from changing the Gettysburg Address (“You changed four score and seven to 87? Abe, that’s a grabber!”). An official of the West India Company listens to Walter Raleigh singing the praises of the 80 tonnes of leaves he’s shipping to London (“Then what do you do, Walt? You set fire to it! You inhale the smoke, huh! You know, Walt … it seems you can stand in front of your fireplace and have the same thing going for you!”).

In 1961, Newhart made his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York, appeared in Don Siegel’s war film Hell Is for Heroes (doing a variation of his routine on a walkie-talkie) and starred in his first TV series, The Bob Newhart Show, a variety and comedy sketch show following Perry Como’s Kraft Music Hall on NBC. Though it lasted only one season, it won an Emmy and a Peabody award.

The key to Newhart’s immediate success was suggested by his “button-down” persona. This was the beginning of President John Kennedy’s “new frontier”, where what the British fashion critic John Taylor demeaned as the “simulated negligence” of the unpadded grey flannel suit signified a certain comfort and style, as well as sober conformity. Newhart’s probing of the accepted everyday was entertaining but sharp; a form of subtle satire.

It was a casual approach that he had refined carefully. Born George Robert in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park, Newhart grew up called “Bob” to distinguish him from his father, George David, who was part-owner of a plumbing and heating business. His mother, Pauline (nee Burns), was a housewife. He attended Catholic schools, and graduated from Loyola University in Chicago with a degree in business management in 1952. After two years in the army working as a clerk, he entered the law school at Loyola, but soon left and began working as an accountant.

In one job, he and a colleague, Ed Gallagher, began recording dialogues in the style of Bob and Ray, an innovative comedy duo. Gallagher left for New York, and Newhart moved to writing ad copy for a Chicago production company, while circulating his own tapes.

Local radio personality Dan Sorkin played some, and Newhart began appearing on local morning TV. Tapes reached the record producer George Avakian, who in 1958 had left Columbia Records to form an equivalent company for Warner Brothers. Avakian wanted to catch Newhart’s standup act immediately; the February 1960 show at the Tidelands Club in Houston – which became his first record – was at the first venue that Newhart’s quickly acquired agent could find to book.

After the success of The Bob Newhart Show, he was immediately busy on the standup circuit. His intelligence and easy-going demeanour made him a popular guest on other talkshows, and eventually he was a regular replacement for Johnny Carson on Tonight. Although he was accused by the comic Shelley Berman of plagiarising the telephone gimmick from him, it had already been a longstanding format used by performers including George Jessel and Arlene Harris. It was his demeanour, knowing but hesitant (which he sometimes said was influenced by George Gobel), that made him such a versatile performer.

The comic Buddy Hackett introduced Newhart to Ginnie (Virginia) Quinn, the daughter of the character actor Bill Quinn. They married in 1963, and the enduring alliance became a running joke when he appeared with the thrice-wed Carson.

Newhart’s film roles were infrequent but often telling: as Major Major in Mike Nichols’ adaptation of Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 (1970); as Gene Wilder’s pal in the Odd Couple-like TV movie Thursday’s Game (1974); and as Papa Elf alongside Will Ferrell in Elf (2003). He also did voices, notably the rescue mouse Bernard in The Rescuers (1977) and its sequel, The Rescuers Down Under (1990).

Unusually, he starred in two long-running TV series. In The Bob Newhart Show (1972-78) he played a psychologist: the perfect manifestation of his standup routine’s listening and commenting. It grew from an appearance on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, and was produced by Mary Tyler Moore and Grant Tinker’s MTM Productions. With Suzanne Pleshette as his schoolteacher wife and Peter Bonerz as the dentist with whom he shares an office, the show was an immediate hit. As ratings dropped and Newhart tired of it, he at one point refused a script that introduced children. “It’s very funny,” he told the producers. “Who’s going to play Bob?”

He returned in 1982 with Newhart, playing Dick Loudon, a writer who moves with his wife (Mary Frann) to a rural Vermont inn. With a cast including Tom Poston, who would win three Emmy nominations as the eccentric handyman George, Newhart became the centre of a world whose chaos stretched the kind of calm understanding for which he was known.

In 1985, Newhart was diagnosed with a blood disease, polycythemia, caused by smoking. Having made comedy from tobacco and appeared, with Poston, in Norman Lear’s comedy Cold Turkey (1971), where a town tries to win $25m from a tobacco company by quitting smoking for a month, he now quit himself.

As Newhart drew to a close after eight seasons, a classic final episode, which played off the famous “who shot JR?” finale of Dallas. It was kept top secret by the cast and crew. Struck by a golf ball, Newhart wakes up in the Bob Newhart Show bedroom, next to Pleshette, complaining of a crazy dream he’s had about Vermont.

Two more series were less successful. Bob (1992-93) saw him as a cartoonist trying to adjust to a corporate world when a character he created is revived. George and Leo (1997-98) was another Odd Couple-type scenario, in which his bookstore owner shares a flat with his son’s father-in-law (Judd Hirsch), who’s running from the mob. Newhart joked about the title: “We had used every variation of my name; all that was left was ‘The’.”

Newhart’s three-part guest appearance on ER in 2003, where Sherry Stringfield’s Dr Lewis helps Newhart’s suicidal Ben Hollander adjust to his oncoming blindness, earned him his fifth Emmy nomination. He was nominated again in 2009 for a supporting role in The Librarian, but finally won in 2013, playing Arthur Jeffries in the comedy The Big Bang Theory. Jeffries was Professor Proton, host of the science TV series (based on Watch Mr Wizard) watched by the genius Sheldon. He was nominated twice more, and reprised the role three times in Young Sheldon.

Newhart’s lifelong comedic chalk-and-cheese friendship with Don Rickles was the subject of Bob and Don: A Love Story, a short documentary made in 2022 by Judd Apatow.

Ginny died in 2023, and Newhart is survived by his sons, Robert and Timothy, and daughters, Courtney and Jennifer.

Whats up with ur day

My house is 47 degrees.

A pipe in my backyard burst.

I maybe fixed it with epoxy but I don’t know because I’m too afraid to turn the water back on because the box looked like one of those as seen on tv shits.

So I don’t have water right now.

For someone who likes to shower twice a day, that’s hard.

And I just want to do laundry. (When I typed that the first time I must have misspelled laundry because it autocorrered to I just want to do Lindsey. Which I mean 🤷🏻‍♀️)

I got epoxy on my re-inc hoodie. That made me decide after this is over ima be straight because I don’t need a man, but I’m not gonna ruin another hoodie ever. So tinder profile incoming.

I ate some snow cream and vegan chicken nuggs I made in the fireplace yesterday.

Today I ate an avocado but I couldn’t find my truffle salt. I found it after I finished the avocado.

I made sweet taters in the fireplace but when I went to the hardware store, the dog ate them. That’s ok, only one was for me anyway.

I have since ordered $30 worth of chicken and biscuits. I don’t eat chicken. But today I am eating chicken. If the delivery driver makes it.

My driveway is on a hill and covered in snow and I pictured myself sliding into my neighbor’s yard when I had to go to the hardware store. That didn’t happen so I guess it’s a good day.

No one told me I live in an incompetent state. I can do cold that’s fine, even 47 in the house is whatever. But no power? That’s where I draw the line. How was I supposed to know I couldn’t use my oven? Like what?

The first Christmas that Minho and Taemin spend together is just a couple months after Minho takes him in. Taemin is still very quiet and shy and traumatized. Still nervous. He has since adapted to his new school, but he’s still uneasy in the world of rich socialites and businessmen. So going to the Choi Inc. annual Christmas gala was extremely overwhelming. Taemin had only ever vaguely seen the tv coverage when his mother used to watch the red carpet and celebrity news about it.

But now Taemin is wearing a tiny tux and shiny, tight shoes. He’s got a bow tie around his neck and his hair is gelled to perfection. And he’s terrified.

“Don’t be scared,” Minho says softly, the both of them sitting in the back of a limo. “You’ll be with me the whole time. It’s just dinner and some dancing. There’s nothing to be worried about.”

“Can’t I go home?” Taemin whispers, gripping Minho’s hand. “Please?”

“We won’t have to stay long,” Minho says, patting Taemin’s hand. “Besides, we’re already here.”

The limo pulls up to the venue, and Minho gets out first after giving Taemin’s hands a little squeeze. He smiles, waves, does his usual hello to all the flashing cameras. But when Taemin doesn’t get out after him, he peeks back inside.

“You’ll be okay,” Minho says softly. “I promise.”

He holds out his hand, and after a few shaky breaths, Taemin takes his hand and steps out.

The flashing and the chattering and the noise intimidates him at first. His eyes go wide and he gasps and he grips Minho’s hand tightly and hides behind his legs. No one misses the way Minho smiles at him and gives his hand a little squeeze. They don’t miss the way Minho moves his hand to pat Taemin’s head. They don’t miss the way Taemin relaxes when he sees Minho smile at him.

At these sorts of events, Minho typically flirts his way through the entire night. He’s also been known to bring a girl or two or three back with him the Choi Manor. But tonight? Minho is holding Taemin’s hand, makes sure he always has a glass full of sparkling grape cider (Taemin’s favorite “special drink”), makes sure Taemin’s dinner plate doesn’t have any sweet potatoes or pork (because Taemin can be a very picky eater about certain foods). He just keeps most of his focus on Taemin.

Minho also introduces Taemin to some of his favorite company officials. To his secretary. To a few friends and acquaintances that Minho is more fond of.

And finally, he introduces him to a certain journalist from Metropolis named Jinki Lee.

“Hey Taeminnie,” Minho whispers in his ear, “Don’t you think he looks like a certain big blue Boy Scout?”

Taemin scrunches up his face at first, but when Minho smirks at him, Taemin gasps and looks at Jinki with wide eyes. Minho actually laughs when Taemin bolts up to Jinki and bombards him with question after question about how he knows Minho and what he does as a journalist and who’s that lady with him is that his girlfriend is that his wife what’s he doing at the gala?

Jinki laughs and kneels down and answers all of Taemin’s questions as best he can. It’s like looking at a different boy - Taemin immediately switched from being nervous and timid and hiding behind Minho’s legs to smiling and chattering and bouncing in front of Jinki. He’s not even holding onto Minho’s hand anymore.

“Are you excited for Christmas?” Jinki asks. “What did you ask Santa to bring you?”

Taemin becomes a bit shy again, and he fiddled with the ends of his tuxedo sleeves.

“I wrote my letter for Santa a couple weeks ago,” Taemin says softly. “I asked him to help me and Meen-o be more like a family.”

Jinki looks very sad for a moment, but he covers it easily by asking how Taemin thinks they could be more like a family.

“Just some stuff,” Taemin stutters. “Like - like, I dunno. Like, me and Mommy and Daddy would always decorate the Christmas tree together. But when I came home from school a couple weeks ago, it was already up and decorated. And it’s not a real tree. And we haven’t made any Christmas cookies or anything. Or gone looking at Christmas lights. Or had hot cocoa and watch ‘A Year Without A Santa Claus’ and ‘Rudolph’. We used to always watch ‘em with hot cocoa.”

Jinki doesn’t really know what to say.

“But Meen-o is busy a lot. With - work,” Taemin stutters, hoping Jinki knows he means both normal work and Batman work.

“Well I think Santa will help,” Jinki says softly.

The rest of the evening went smoothly, and it ended with Minho carrying a very exhausted Taemin back out to their limo.

On Christmas Eve, when Taemin sleepily steppe down the stairs hoping to find breakfast, he instead found Minho in a colorful Christmas pajamas with more decorations than Taemin remembered being in the house last night.

“Are you ready,” Minho starts, crouching down in front of Taemin with a big grin on his face, “for the Choi Family Christmas Eve Extravaganza?”

Taemin scrunches up his face at that.

“What’s that?”

“What’s that?” Minho gasps, putting a hand on his chest. “It’s a day full of making gingerbread men and decorating the tree and the house and watching movies and taking silly pictures in matching PJs!”

Taemin gets more and more excited with every word Minho says, and he even starts bouncing and holding his stuffed elephant tight in his hands.

“Are we really gonna do all that?” Taemin asks, his voice a little dreamy sounding.

“Right after we make gingerbread pancakes for breakfast.”

Taemin immediately rushes to the kitchen, his socked feet sliding on the floors. Everything was already out on the counters, ready to mix and cook on the griddle. They spend a good portion of the morning cooking and giggling and eating and cleaning. By the time breakfast is done, Taemin is already a little sleepy.

Minho sends him to his room with his arms full of Christmas-themed PJs that match the ones Minho is wearing, and when he comes back down, he finds boxes and boxes of decorations waiting for him.

They keep the decorated contained to the main family room they usually sit in. It has a fireplace and cozy couches and bookcases and a television. They cover the fireplace mantle with holly and a nativity scene and all sorts of other figurines and lights. Then they decorate a fresh tree Minho brought in that morning.

The two of them decorate a few new ornaments together, and Minho makes sure to take a picture of Taemin with them. Minho also makes sure that they put the newly decorated ornaments right st the front.

When they put the star at the top, Minho holds taemin up to place it. It makes Taemin smile so big.

It’s just a fun day. They watch all of Taemin’s favorite Christmas movies cuddled on the couch, a fire is roaring, and the house smells like gingerbread and hot cocoa. It really feels like Christmas. Taemin loves every second of it.

“You know,” Minho says softly when they put the cookies and milk by the fireplace, “sometimes you can hear Santa on the roof when he comes to visit good little boys.”

Taemin gasps and looks at Minho with wide eyes.

“Really?” he asks.

“Do you wanna stay in the couch until we hear Santa?”

“Can we?”

“Only until we hear Santa on the roof,” Minho says. “Otherwise he might not come down the chimney.”

Taemin bounces despite clearly being sleepy, and they stay cuddled on the couch watching more Christmas movies and snuggled in blankets.

Minho knows that it’s Jinki who’s walking on the roof above them, but Taemin’s sleepy eyes immediately open and stare at the ceiling.

“Meen-o,” he whispers, snuggling closer. “It’s Santa!”

“Ho, ho, ho!” a deep voice echoes down the chimney.

Taemin gasps and grins and grips at the front of Minho’s shirt.

“We better get up to bed,” Minho whispers. “Otherwise Santa might not come down.”

Taemin scrambles to rush upstairs, pulling Minho behind him. He tucks Taemin into bed, whispering Christmas fairytales to him until his eyes flutter shut and he’s fast asleep. Then, Minho goes downstairs and puts Taemin’s Christmas presents under the tree.

The twinkle in Taemin’s eyes when he wakes up Christmas morning is all worth it. It’s easy to buy toys and presents, but it’s not as easy to buy Christmas magic. It took a lot of planning on Minho’s part, and some negotiating with Jinki to get him play the part of Santa.

“Thank you,” Taemin whispers after they had everything cleaned up and were cuddling on the couch by the fire. “Merry Christmas, Meen-o.”

“Merry Christmas, Taeminnie,” Minho whispers, holding him close. “Did you have a good Christmas?”

“A great Christmas!” Taemin gushes. “Didja like the present I gave you?”

Taemin gave him a big, black mug with hand-painted yellow letters that said “BatDad” with the Bat-symbol painted beneath it. Minho actually giggles when he opened the box and saw it. And it warmed his heart to think that Taemin maybe thinks of him as his BatDad.

“I love it so much,” Minho gushes back. “It’s my favorite present ever.”

Taemin smiles at him. Minho smiles back. It’s a good first Christmas together.

Every night after Christmas, Taemin giggles when he goes down to the batcave and finds Minho drinking coffee from his BatDad mug. It becomes Minho’s favorite mug. He always uses it. It always makes Taemin smile and laugh.

The houses will also be on the sideblog shown from several angles, but here are some basic previews. All the items are things I’ve saved up for and bought, or obtained in events, so it’s… very rewarding to complete these, heh heh.

Timmy’s house - Main floor

Please notice Dad’s trophy (“Father Time”) in Dad’s sewing room (“Mice Capades”) and the fact that the laundry room is on the main floor (“Dust Busters”). The kitchen appliances move around in canon, but you get the idea.

Timmy’s house - Upper floor

I turned the space above the garage into the attic (modeled after “I Dream of Cosmo”) instead of building a third floor for it. I’m extremely proud of that mezzanine. Timmy’s bathroom changes colors throughout the series, but I went with pink because of “Fairly Odd Baby.”

His parents have the green bathroom and the blue one is downstairs. His parents’ bedroom is modeled after “Dread and Breakfast.” That purple room over there is for Tommy and Tammy, since they’re in my game. In Riddleverse canon they live in the basement, but I haven’t built it yet. In canon, that’s probably where the entrance to the attic is.

Timmy’s parents’ bedroom is seen in the episodes “Dread and Breakfast” and “Dog Gone,” though I wasn’t able to place the door across from the bed as it is in the show. They also have lamps on the nightstands, but I took them out to move things and forgot to put them back when I took this picture. The lamp at the end of the upper hall is also a “Dread and Breakfast” ref.

Chloe’s house - Main floor

Chloe’s canon house is quite interesting… All the floors are wood, even in her bedroom and the kitchen. Interesting choice considering her family. The green kitchen was based off the glimpse we saw in “Which Is Wish?”

Hands-down my favorite part of Chloe’s house is the fact that instead of a TV across from the couch, there’s just an elaborate painting of a unicorn.

Chloe’s house - Upper floor

I haven’t figured out what to do with that brick room in the back yet (Probably make it a laundry room), and her parents’ bedroom is still bare, but this is pretty nice overall. I like how Chloe’s room takes up 50% of the whole floor.

I didn’t place Chloe’s bathroom along the same wall as the hallway like it’s shown in canon (which doesn’t even make sense anyway), so I went with the next best thing.

Blue Castle - Main floor

You can see Foop over there sitting in the camarilla court’s dining room (“Fairly Odd Baby”). The TV room with the big red couch was mentioned in my one-shot “Not All the Same.” There’s a smaller reading room nearby that was mentioned in the one-shot as well. 

The great hall is here with all its tables, as well as the head tables for the High Count, High Countess, their heir, and the First General to sit (with mirrors behind them to symbolize transparency and honesty). You can see some statues in the hallway by the stairs. I’m very proud of the kitchen and the secret passages. You can’t see it well from this angle, but there’s a potion cauldron in there that represents the bottomless cauldron of the Dagda before Anti-Cosmo lost it.

In the back, you can glimpse Anti-Wanda in the High Countess office, with the High Count office beyond it. It cost me around 6 million Simoleons to build the entire Castle (which is three floors at the moment) and I’m very pleased.

Crocker household - Main floor

Pretty self-explanatory! Building it was a lot of fun, and my one complaint is that I couldn’t put the basement stairs where I imagine them, so they’re kind of just… over there in the corner. I built this house before I started writing Come What May, so that fanfic is accurate to this house design.

The cat by Kevin’s feet is Smokey (“Timmy’s Secret Wish”). Girlfriend is a siamese and she lives here too.

Crocker household - Upper floor

SPOILERS! Here’s a sneak peek of what’s in the mystery room in Come What May… Imagine it being absolutely cluttered, but it basically looks like that. The flying broom closet is in there, as well as a gaming system, a desk, and a bed that looks like a coffin because I couldn’t resist. Let’s say Foop brought that in.

The only reason the mystery room exists in Come What May is because when you build a second floor, you can’t get rid of the blank rooms that get built above the main floor… so I put it to good use. The one on the other side of the house isn’t really there.

I went with the canon from “Secret Origin of Denzel Crocker” that Denzel’s room is above the garage. In the back corner of the house is the room where Kevin is currently staying. It was Denzel’s bedroom when he was a kid, and became Kevin’s mom’s bedroom after Denzel moved out.

You can see the creepy grandfather clock at the end of the hall, with its one light hanging above it. That’s the clock from “The Old Man and the C-”

Crocker household - Crocker Cave

This is as far as I got before I started working on the castle, and I haven’t gone back and expanded it (Basements are really expensive). Still, you get the idea. The laundry area was based on the episode “Crock Talk.”

I’m not a big fan of the island villa because it’s super cramped, but I remodeled it from the default A LOT and I’m pretty pleased with how it came out. Goldie’s office is worth noting, as well as that lovely lounge area. Must be a nice place to hang out.

Ambrosine’s house

One of our important locations in Origin of the Pixies. Emery’s room used to be H.P.’s room until he moved out. Please appreciate my entrance hall, diagonal chair by the fireplace, wooden bathtub, and pet rabbit out back. Also, forgive the high-tech fridge… I put it in there to feed someone and forgot to take it out, whoops. The black cupboard in the kitchen is supposed to be the fridge.

China’s house - Main floor; still a WIP

Still working on this one, but it’s coming along nicely. H.P.’s office is up front on the right, China’s on the left. The trellis in the back is where they were married, and I included the shed they took their wedding photos in front of.

I’d like to turn one of my apartments into Pixies Inc. headquarters… I drew a floorplan on paper, but I’m not sure how well I can make it work. We’ll see. The other apartment might be turned into the Spellementary School dorm. I have the Water Temple partially built as well.

And yeah, it is really fun! It’s completely free to play, but it’s the kind of app I’d be willing to spend a small amount of money on if there was something that I really, really wanted, because the gameplay and graphics delight me. The quests are lots of fun and the create-a-sim customization options are plentiful enough to keep me happy. I’ve put a LOT of effort into obtaining all the pajamas and collecting all the special event hairstyles, let me tell you.

Sims Freeplay was my first entrance into the Sims, so I’m not sure how it compares to the main Sims games, but I enjoy it on a daily basis and I highly recommend it. I’ve maxed out to the highest possible level at the moment (55) so I can’t earn any more XP unless they come out with a new update that lets me, but I still enjoy earning the moneys so I can build some fun buildings.

I chose not to complete the Seniors quest because I didn’t want to progress to the quest that forces aging and death, so my one complaint is that the automatic aging feature can’t be turned off once you obtain it. However, if you don’t complete the quest, you don’t have to worry about your Sims ever dying. I want to live in my fantasy town for a while longer.
