Beetle cuddle drabble thingy

The warmth from the bed sheets wrapped snugly around him first greeted Beetle when he opened his eyes. Sleep still dragged at his eyelids, tempting him to simply fall back asleep for another couple hours. He decided to resist the temptation today, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t cuddle up still. The weight of an arm across his back reminded Beetle of who exactly was next to him, and he definitely didn’t want to move away from it any time soon. 

Inching his way closer, Beetle snuggled up closer to Darnell, the taller man still being asleep next to him. Beetle couldn’t help but smile to himself, seeing the man sleep so peacefully next to him. Usually it took a bit of coaxing to get Darnell to fall asleep, but Beetle had expertly lured him in with the promise of cuddles. Darnell wasn’t nearly as bad as Pico by a country-wide margin, but he had his moments. Beetle wrapped his arms around him, holding him like a large plushie as he cuddled up with him. 

He couldn’t help but wonder if a middle-school Beetle would ever imagine this happening. Back when they were both just teenagers, in the world, just trying to make it through. They still were, and by God were they trying. But with how much the struggle had remained the same, the fact that they still had each other also remained the same. When he really thought about it: No, a 13 year old Beetle would never have seen this coming. It was funny, in a way. Beetle’s mind wandered, wondering if the goth punks would mind. Cyril would be obnoxious about it (as per usual, you got used to it), Alucard, Spike and Hanzo wouldn’t care, Pierre would try to be helpful and fail miserably, and Cassandra would throw a hissy fit for two solid minutes before suddenly she couldn’t give a flying fuck.

An endearing group they were, by no means perfect, but they were charming and enjoyable to have around. Outcasts supporting outcasts, as they would say. Beetle imagined that, in a person who grew up in Philly’s eyes, someone from the countryside in the West was no better than a fish in the middle of a hot skillet. He doesn’t recall if he ever asked Darnell that, maybe he asked Pico or Nene a long time ago. Either way, Cassandra must have seen some amount of potential in Beetle to pick him and adopt him into her select group of friends. Not like he really had a choice in the matter, he’d rather be in a group of outcasts at least willing to take him in than be an outcast by himself. In Philly, no less. Being on your lonesome was like having a deathwish apparently. At least, that’s what Cassandra told him, which looking back made it seem a bit more exaggerated than it was. Eh, close enough comparison.

Beetle was snapped out of his train of thought when he heard the living teddy bear he was clinging to start to wake up. Darnell blinked open his bleary eyes, a sleepy expression on his face. Beetle couldn’t help but giggle to himself, with Darnell noticing as he, in turn, smiled down at the cuddle bug. “What ‘re you gigglin’ about?” He mumbled sleepily, before yawning and stretching a bit. Beetle smiled up at him, “Nothin’, you just looked a lil’ goofy all sleepy and stuff.” He replied with a playful smugness. He didn’t miss the faint redness dusting Darnell’s cheeks after the fact, as the taller man turned his head away to hide his grumpily flustered expression. Beetle only giggled more, earning him another smile from the man that made the trying worth it.
