at least you are doing it properly! the amount of times that mates of mine have done idiotic things like not sugar soaping the walls first or not using masking tape - or using the wrong rollers & then wondering why it looks shitty! you take pride in your properly prepared walls hun! x

oh gosh, i’ve never even heard of sugar soaping! x) i’m honestly not sure i’m doing the best job cuz i’ve not been super motivated, but my brother was helping me a lot which was really nice, so hopefully it’ll be okay :)

Mycroft’s family portrait

Seeing this photo (by Nixxie-pic) of one of the family portraits in Mycroft's home, I thought it would be fun to research the background of the artwork and heraldic armorial in the top left of the painting. The complex setting of the arms on the shield-escutcheon is itself of some interest, giving the history of the subject as that of high nobility and wealth.

As convention stands today the children of an heraldic heiress may quarter their mother's arms with their father's, after their mother's death. Let us examine the example of the Holmes' escutcheon. Let’s say that John Holmes marries Elizabeth Tanner, an heiress. They have several children who survive to adulthood, the eldest son William, will inherit. Given that women cannot hold a ducal title, I am working on the notion that either John or John's father is the direct issue of a duke (a third son, perhaps).

When John and Elizabeth are dead, William inherits his both his father's arms as well as his mother's arms as a quartering (a single sheild divided into four heraldic sections). He divides his shield into four and places his father's arms in the most honourable quarter (the dexter chief) and his mother's in the second quarter. These arms are repeated in the base quarters to preserve artistic balance. William Holmes then marries another heiress with her own set of quartered arms arranged in the date order they were acquired.

The grandchildren of John and Elizabeth are now entitled to show all eight quarterings. There are two ways of doing this. They can either divide their shield into two rows of four or, perhaps artistically more desirable, into three rows of three, which will mean repeating the patronomial arms in the last quarter. This is the escutcheon we see in the Holmes family portrait shown in Mycroft's house.

Now let's look at the coronet above the escutcheon. It clearly shows the heraldic strawberry leaf in the centre. A Duke's coronet usually has eight of them, though it's hard to see more than the central one here. It might also be the coronet of a Marquesse or an Earl, though both of the latter should also have 'pearls' raised up on spikes between the leaves. I see absolutely no sign of pearls here at all, so am going to work on the assumption that this is indeed a ducal coronet that has either been poorly rendered or has, in fact, been damaged in battle - let's not forget that the title of 'Duke' (dux) was, primarily, that of a military commander. This idea is strengthened by the sheild's crest of a bloody-tipped spear-point surmounting the entire armorial

Thus the armorial in Mycroft's family painting tells us that, at the time of painting (the colour and fashion of the subject's clothing suggestive of high Elizabethan fashion in the late 1500's), this is probably going to have been painted between 1483 (when there were 16 ducal titles, each with extended families) and 1608, when Elizabeth I is dead and the last duke (Norfolk) had been executed. That the sheild itself shows eight quarterings as well as a ducal coronet also argues that the Holmes family (or whatever name it held at the time of the portrait), has been associated with nobility for at least three generations (the subject is a grandchild of John and Elizabeth, don't forget). Here’s what the well-dressed Elaizabethan man would be wearing in the late 1500s.

I was getting really interested in the research at this point, looking at Elizabethan fashion for men in the late 1500s, when I found this painting:

What a lovely offer - thank you! I think Rupert maybe won’t have as much “downtime” as he did last year since he’s only there for one day but here’s hoping you (and others) get a chance to chat to him! Maybe we can co-ordinate a list between us all!!

There will also be a chance to ask questions in Rupert’s main stage talk. Sherlocked have a form open on their website now to submit them. It looks like the talk is titled “For the love of Lestrade” - very fitting!

Written for Kat and based on her intriguing prompt, which was so good I had to drop everything else I was writing (ahem, Turned) to get the first chapter out of my system. Hate to be that person who brings up th S5 wishful thinking again, but I just found the link to this interview in my drafts (I think I put it there while researching for one of my metas) because I remember the things Moftiss said in it struck me as different. Or at least, I don't remember these being quoted as much:

Didn't get a chance to sit down and think this through, but let's just say that if their plan was to avoid questions about S5 they really failed :)
