The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo (2003)

As the only surviving mouse of the litter, Despereaux was always considered the loser, the runt, so naturally, he falls in love with a princess named Pea. The story also tells of a mouse called Roscuro, who lives in the darkness but wishes for light, and Miggery Sow, a serving girl who wants one wish. They set off on a journey that will end them up in a terrible dungeon, a wonderful castle, and of course, with each other.

Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree (2022-2024)

Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv the orc barbarian cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and an unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city has ever seen.

Navy Identifies Two Aviators Who Died in Growler Crash

The Navy identified the two Growler crew members who died after a crash last week as naval aviator Lt. Serena Wileman and naval flight officer Lt. Cmdr. Lyndsay Evans.

Wileman, 31, of California, commissioned in July 2018. She joined the “Zappers” of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 130 in November 2022. It was her first unit assignment following flight training, according to her Navy bio.

Evans, 31, from California, enlisted in the Navy in August 2010 and commissioned as an officer through the Reserve Officer Training Corps at University of Southern California, Los Angeles in May 2014. She joined the VAQ-130 in September 2023. She previously served on the Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 136 from November 2017 to August 2020 before going to Electronic Communications Weapons School.

“More than just names and ranks, they were role models, trailblazers, and women whose influence touched countless people on the flight deck and well beyond,” reads a Navy release.

The two most recently were deployed aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), which spent seven of its nine-month deployment in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden as part of Operation Prosperity Guardian. The carrier and its air wing returned home in July.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share the loss of two beloved Zappers,” Cmdr. Timothy Warburton, commanding officer of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 130, said in the Sunday Navy release. “Our priority right now is taking care of the families of our fallen aviators, and ensuring the well-being of our Sailors and the Growler community. We are grateful for the ongoing teamwork to safely recover the deceased.”

Evans was part of the all-female flyover during the Super Bowl in 2023. She was a Growler Tactics Instructor (GTI), recognized as the Growler Tactics Instructor of the Year for Fiscal Year 2024, according to a Navy release.

“As an EA-18G Electronic Warfare Officer (EWO) and veteran of two sea tours, she earned the respect of the entire Growler community for her tactical expertise, mentorship to those of all ranks and communities, and ability to bring out the best in everyone around her,” reads the Navy release.

She was one of the few women to fly combat missions over land, as she coordinated and participated in multiple combat strikes against the Houthis in Yemen, according to the Navy release.

Wileman also conducted multiple strikes on the Houthis in Yemen, making her another one of the few women to fly combat missions, according to the Navy release.

“As a senior first-tour Naval Aviator, she established herself as an energetic, vocal, and positive influence in VAQ-130. Known for her heart of gold, passion, and unrelenting smile, Wileman was always committed to improve and grow, not only for herself but every Sailor and officer around her,” reads the release.

In addition to being a naval aviator, Wileman was a landing signal officer, responsible for making sure aircraft landed safely aboard Ike.

“Outside the cockpit, Wileman made everyone smile. She would brighten up any room and was known for her genuine care and compassion for those around her. She always brought a sense of calm, in the good times and bad, whether it was through a joke, a game of cribbage, or a giant bear hug for a Sailor in need of one,” reads the release.

Wileman leaves behind her husband, Brandon, who she met during flight school. He also serves as a naval aviator.

The two both were dog moms, something the two women bonded over. Evans leaves behind Nix, an Australian shepherd, while Wileman owned Riley, a Chiweenie mix.

The EA-18G Growler crashed last week in a remote area, described as a steep, heavily wooded area east of Mount Rainier. The location of the crash site, described as a “snow-covered, wilderness environment,” made it difficult for the Navy to conduct search and rescue efforts, which turned to recovery efforts on Sunday.

The Navy brought in multiple partner agencies to assist with their search efforts, including Army special forces. Ongoing efforts to search the site, recover debris and plan for salvage continue.

“Soldiers from 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord are assisting in the search,” the Navy said in a news release. “1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) brings specialized mountaineering, high-angle rescue, medical, and technical communication skills necessary to navigate the difficult terrain associated with the Cascade Mountain Range that is inaccessible by other means.”

VIVI (aka Vivian Vu) was announced in 2018. she was to be an english synth with a japanese and chinese bank also, but was cancelled due to legal issues surrounding obtaining a development license. she was being developed by VoMelody (vocadb also lists zero-g as a company shes associated with but im not sure in what way. vomelodys vocadb article just says they were developing her). since vivis banks were never released there is no official way to obtain them, but developer copies were leaked to the public in 2021. vivi is illustrated by hieihirai. i dont know who voiced vivi

Fortschritte bei der Demilliardärisierung

Ich berichte im Techniktagebuch-Chat davon, dass ich gerade ausprobiere, ob ich auch ohne Google Maps zurechtkommen kann, seit der Umbenennung des Golf von Mexiko.

Angela H. sagt: "Müssen wir bald wieder alles selber löten, weil Millionäre alles ruinieren? Wir haben zu oft 'wir hatten ja nix' gesagt, bald haben wir wieder nix!"

Ich sage, dass ich im Vergleich zu meiner "I drive my Google to the Google to buy some Google for my Google"-Zeit schon sehr entmilliardärisiert bin und bisher keine Komforteinbußen spüre, eher das Gegenteil. Das fällt mir aber gerade zum ersten Mal auf. Deshalb hier eine Übersicht:

2015 habe ich das Facebook-Tab im Browser geschlossen und 2017 die Facebook-App von meinem Handy gelöscht. Im Sommer 2024 habe ich noch mal beschlossen, pragmatisch zu sein und wieder öfter bei Facebook reinzuschauen wegen der Verwandten und Freund*innen, die halt nur dort sind. Aber das war (wegen der US-Politik) ein sehr ungünstiger Zeitpunkt für diesen Plan und ich habe ihn kurze Zeit später wieder verworfen. Fazit: Das mit den Verwandten ist zwar schade, aber immer, wenn ich mal reinschaue, muss ich durch 98% Unsinn waten, der gar nicht von Leuten stammt, die ich kenne. Ich bin immer froh, wenn ich Facebook wieder schließen kann, es ist wirklich keine schöne Nutzungserfahrung.

Seit März 2020 kaufe ich Gegenstände, die keine Bücher sind, nicht mehr routinemäßig bei Amazon, sondern entweder gebraucht bei Ebay oder direkt in den Onlineshops der jeweiligen Firmen. Die Ebay-App ist gut, Kaufen geht darin genauso schnell wie mit 1-Click bei Amazon. Fazit: Fehlt mir nicht, außer etwa 1-2x im Jahr, wenn es ein Produkt nur bei Amazon gibt, oder wenn es wirklich schnell gehen muss.

Im Februar 2022 bin ich von Chrome wieder auf Firefox umgestiegen. Fazit: Alles ist mindestens so gut wie vorher.

Ende 2022 bin ich von meinem Macbook (mit einer kurzen Chromebook-Übergangszeit) auf einen Framework-Laptop mit Linux umgestiegen. Fazit: Ich bin zufrieden, mir fehlt nichts.

Seit Ende 2022 bin ich bei Mastodon und seit Anfang 2023 nicht mehr bei Twitter. Fazit: Ich trauere um das Twitter von früher. Das Twitter von 2022 fehlt mir überhaupt nicht. Die anderen sind zwar jetzt fast alle bei Bluesky, und deshalb schmerzt es mich manchmal, dass ich da nicht bin, aber ich will nicht.

Seit Ende 2022 kaufe ich kaum noch E-Books bei Amazon, weil ich meinen Bedarf über die Bibliotheks-App Libby/Overdrive decke. Was es nicht auszuleihen gibt, kaufe ich (wenn ich es wirklich dringend lesen will) weiterhin, und zwar waren das zuletzt etwa fünf E-Books im Jahr bei irgendeiner deutschen Buchhandlung, deren Namen ich immer erst aus meinen Mails raussuchen muss, und etwa zehn englischsprachige im Jahr weiterhin bei Amazon, ohne besonderen Grund. Ich könnte wahrscheinlich leicht auch für diese zehn eine andere Quelle finden und habe es bisher nur aus Trägheit nicht versucht. Fazit: Ich bin sogar besser dran, denn durch das Leihen-statt-Kaufen spare ich viel Geld (einen hohen dreistelligen bis niedrigen vierstelligen Betrag im Jahr).

Seit März 2023 bin ich auch zum Verkaufen eigener Bücher nicht mehr bei Amazon, sondern bei Lulu. Die älteren selbstgemachten Bücher gibt es noch bei Amazon, weil ich sie nicht umziehen wollte. Ich glaube, dazu müsste man die Bücher selbst umbauen, es ist nicht damit getan, eine Datei anderswo hochzuladen, und dafür reicht meine Motivation bei den alten Büchern nicht. Fazit: Ich hatte dazu vorher keine Gefühle und ich habe jetzt auch keine.

Seit Anfang 2024 habe ich ein Fairphone. Allerdings benutze ich immer noch das ganz normale Google-Android mit seinen nicht deinstallierbaren Google-Diensten. Ich hätte auch mehrere alternative Betriebssysteme zur Wahl gehabt, im Nachhinein weiß ich eigentlich nicht, warum ich die nicht ausprobiert habe. Vielleicht wollte ich nicht so viel Veränderung auf einmal. Oder die Demilliardärisierung hat mich noch nicht so interessiert. Fazit: Es ist besser als mein voriges Handy (aber halt auch viel teurer).

Im März 2024 habe ich die Google-Suche durch kagi.com ersetzt. Fazit: Alles ist viel besser als vorher (kostet dafür aber auch $10 im Monat).

Bei Instagram habe ich mich Anfang 2025 abgemeldet, das war aber einfach, weil ich mich damit sowieso nie angefreundet hatte. Bisher kein Ersatz, ich suche auch keinen. Fazit: War egal, ist egal.

Und jetzt eben kein Google Maps mehr. Meine Liebe zu Openstreetmap ist groß, aber mein Hass auf die störrische Benutzbarkeit der Android-App OSMand oft auch. Deshalb teste ich gerade eine andere App auf der Basis von Openstreetmap, "Organic Maps". Bisher finde ich sie ganz gut. Für den öffentlichen Nahverkehr in Berlin habe ich gerade heute wieder die "BVG Fahrinfo"-App installiert. Im Moment stelle ich mir noch vor, dass mir die Stauanzeige von Google Maps fehlen wird, tatsächlich fahre ich aber sehr sehr selten Auto, und auch in diesen Situationen hat sie mir bisher eigentlich nichts genützt, ich fand es nur schön, dass sie existiert.

Geplant, aber noch nicht umgesetzt:

Goodreads gehört auch zu Amazon, deshalb habe ich Ende 2023 / Anfang 2024 die Daten über meine gelesenen Bücher bei Goodreads exportiert und bei TheStorygraph importiert. TheStorygraph überzeugt mich bisher nicht so. Es ist unübersichtlich und ich kann es nicht benutzen, um dort Buchempfehlungen zu finden. Manches ist aber auch besser, weil TheStorygraph im Unterschied zu Goodreads gewartet und weiterentwickelt wird. Ich trage jetzt alles doppelt bei beiden ein und werde also eines Tages schnell und schmerzlos bei Goodreads aussteigen können.

Seit Herbst 2024 versuche ich von Gmail wieder auf Thunderbird umzusteigen. Das ist theoretisch gar kein Problem, ich habe sowieso die ganze Zeit meine eigene Mailadresse nur durch Gmail durchgeleitet und bräuchte diese Umleitung jetzt nur wieder abzustellen. Praktisch möchte ich aber gern meine gesamten Mailarchive in Thunderbird haben, wozu ich sie erst mal aus Gmail exportieren lassen und dann runterladen muss, und das ist bisher an Vergesslichkeit und Prokrastination gescheitert.

Der Techniktagebuch-Chat ist gerade (nach drei Abstimmungen in fünf Jahren) endlich vom Facebook Messenger zu Discord umgezogen (separater Beitrag folgt). Das ist schon lange der Hauptgrund, warum ich noch im Facebook Messenger war. Jetzt muss ich mich nur noch mit wenigen Leuten auf andere Kanäle einigen, dann kann ich da eventuell ganz weg (nur 1 Freundin hängt an Facebook wie eine Napfschnecke am Felsen, also mal sehen).

Bisher nicht mal geplant:

Ich habe bisher nur äußerst flüchtig darüber nachgedacht, ob ich mich von Google Drive / Docs / Spreadsheets trennen sollte oder kann. Ich weiß, dass es theoretisch geht, und vielleicht würde mir auch da gar nichts fehlen, oder mein Leben würde sogar besser werden. Aber ich habe mich damit bisher nicht befasst. Außerdem läuft in einem meiner Jobs alles über Google (woran ich eventuell selbst schuld bin; ein noch zu schreibender Beitrag), da käme ich also sowieso nicht raus.

Auch beim Google-Kalender habe ich noch nicht über Umzug nachgedacht, obwohl das wahrscheinlich kein Problem wäre. Die Querverbindungen zwischen dem Kalender und anderen Googleprodukten nutze ich sowieso nicht, und wenn mal Termine aus meiner Mail automatisch im Kalender auftauchen, nervt mich das eher.

Bei Google Keep (der Notizzettel-App von Google) auch nicht, obwohl auch das leicht gehen müsste.

Und bei Google Photos auch nicht. Da würde mir die Bildersuche wirklich fehlen, sie findet zwar manchmal Frösche, wenn man Katzen sucht, hilft mir aber trotzdem oft weiter. Allerdings habe ich noch nie versucht, rauszufinden, ob es nicht doch irgendwas anderes gibt, wo mein Handy neue Fotos automatisch hochladen und nach Stichworten durchsuchbar machen könnte.

In allen drei Rubriken dieses Beitrags fehlen wahrscheinlich noch Einträge, ich ergänze das nach und nach.

Das Jahr 2024 neigt sich dem Ende zu und ich habe Bücher gelesen! 53 Stück sinds an der Zahl gewesen und da Twitter nicht mehr ist, kommt mein Leserückblick dieses Jahr auf Tumblr.

Jedes Buch kriegt 1-3 (hauptsächlich) spoilerfreie Sätze zugeordnet, die man als Kurzreview oder meine bescheidene Meinung sehen kann.

Mit * gekennzeichnete Bücher sind Rereads und Orange hinterlegte Titel fand ich dieses Jahr besonders super.

Alles in allem habe ich dieses Jahr doch wieder eine überraschend breite Palette an Genres in dir Hand genommen, wobei man ab der Mitte des Jahres doch eine ziemlich deutliche Verschiebung in diverse zeitgeschichtliche Themen merkt. Das hatte bestimmt nix mit den politischen Ereignissen des Jahres zu tun, nein, nein.

Lange Rede, kurzer Sinn:

01. Der Prozess - Franz Kafka

Mein Leben fühlt such regelmäßig einfach genau so an. Absolut relatable

02. American Gods - Neil Gaiman

Lag seit 2017 auf dem Stapel der Schande und war damit das älteste Buch auf ebendiesem - gut so, denn hätte uch es n halbes Jahr früher gelesen hätt ich sehr viel weniger damit anfangen können. Den etwas derberen Sprachstil muss man abkönnen wollen.

03. Solitaire - Alice Osemann

Ich appreciate es sehr für die mid-2010er Tumblr-Vibes, aber ansonsten war das inhaltlich so gar nicht meins. Bin aber altersmäßig auch nicht wirklich die Zielgruppe dafür

04. Lulu - Frank Wedekind

Mein Gott ist dieses Stück abgefucked. Liebs. Darf ich die Gräfin Geschwitz bitte drücken?? She did not deserve this. Genial, wenn man viel interpretieren und zwischen den Zeilen lesen will.

05. 11 Minuten - Pauolo Coelho

Irgendwo zwischen "Wie kann man so asexuell über Sex reden, das ja geil", "Hey die Geschichte selber ist ja sogar ziemlich interessant" und "Oh Gott jetzt sind wir wieder beim Selbsthilfe-Part angekommen. Mach das weg!"

Wer auch immer meinte man soll Prachett Romane nicht der Reihe nach lesen hatte vermutlich recht. Der Anfang war etwas langatmig, das Ende aber super

07. Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull - Thomas Mann

In diesem Buch gibt es eine mehrseitige Szene in der erklärt wird warum jetzt erst mal alles drum herum in großem Detail über mehrere Seiten erklärt werden muss. Und so ließt sich dann das ganze Buch.

Britisches Urban Fantasy mit leicht vorhersehbarem Plot. Wäre ich n paar Jahre jünger wärs bestimmt super. So war ich n bisschen genervt davon. Wer auf super sassy Protagonistinnen steht ist hiermit aber definitiv gut beraten! (Den zweiten Teil will ich trotzdem lesen!)

Ich dachte mir immer schon, auch vor 2017 als die AFD in den Bundestag eingezogen ist , dass wenn die Faschisten nochmal an die Macht kommen, unsere ganzen Gesetze die wir nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg aufgebaut haben um das zu verhindern nutzlos sein werden. Ich meine das ist doch der Witz an Faschisten Bewegungen, sie unterwandern Regierung und die kommen ja auch normalerweise nicht aus dem nix, die NSDAP kam ja nicht aus dem nix. Du kannst noch so viel sagen "oh wir lassen aber verfassungsfeindliche Parteien nicht regieren" wenn die ihre Anhänger und Sympathisanten überall haben dann wird da doch nichts gemacht. Zumindest ich wurde in der Schule unglaublich zugetextet mit Holocaust Thematiken und das ist ja auch richtig und wichtig aber wenn du dann halt keinerlei Präsenzbezug in deinen Lehrplan einbaust, quasi keine politische Aufklärung machst und den Kindern nicht beibringst Propaganda zu erkennen geht das natürlich schief. Und ich war dazu noch auf nem Gymnasium, ich habe keinen Plan wie es auf real oder Hautschulen aussieht. Niemand wird was machen bis es zu spät ist, das nächste Jahr wird kommen und wir werden ne Koalition aus der AFD und Union bekommen und dann werden halt alle Wohlfahrtssysteme und Minderheiten gefickt. Natürlich geh ich auf die Straße und protestiere, aufgeben ist keine Option, aber ich denke auch nicht das dass aufhaltbar ist.

Systemfehler - Reise durchs Klassensystem der Medizin

Mir ging es nicht so gut letztes Jahr. Ich war müde. Immer müde und immer mehr müde. Details erspare ich Euch. Erstens ist das zu persönlich und zweitens wird man nicht gesünder, indem man über Krankheiten spricht. Doch obwohl sich das eigentlich von selbst versteht, scheint auf diesem Gebiet eine mariannengraben-tiefe Mind-Bahavior-Gap zu bestehen - ein freundliches Wort für gescheit dahersabbeln und nix auf die Reihe kriegen.

40 ist das neue 20 – ha! Zumindest in meinem Freundeskreis habe ich seit einiger Zeit das Gefühl, 40 ist das neue 80: Wie in einem schlechten Horrorfilm, in dem nach und nach alle Menschen zu Zombies werden, übernahmen Begriffe wie „Darmflora“, „Leaky Gut“ und „Mastzellenaktivierungssyndrom“ die Macht über unsere Kommunikation. Achtsam, wie wir alle aus lauter Angst, frühzeitig einer Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankung zu erliegen oder – noch schlimmer- unsere Konkurrenzfähigkeit auf dem Arbeitsmarkt einzubüßen, geworden sind, fiel uns das dann zum Glück irgendwann auf. Seither wird zu Beginn eines Treffens der Timer gestellt und jeder bekommt exakt 5 Minuten, um über Gesundheit, beziehungsweise Krankheiten zu sprechen. Es wird sehr schnell und manchmal unter Zuhilfenahme von Notizen gesprochen, aber es funktioniert ganz gut.

Leider wird man vom nicht darüber sprechen auch nicht automatisch gesund. Ich war nach einer mehrjährigen Odyssee von Spezialist zu Spezialist ziemlich zermürbt. Überall wurde ein bisschen was gefunden, nirgendwo der Zusammenhang. Jeder Autoschlosser sieht sich bei einer defekten Lichtmaschine auch den Keilriemen an. Menschen sind komplexer als Autos, da müsste es doch selbstverständlich sein, dass... Aber lassen wir das! Sich über ärztliche Inkompetenz zu beschweren, gehört ebenso in die Kategorie Frühvergreisung. Jedenfalls beschloss ich, mir zur (wenn alles gut geht) Lebensmitte einen TÜV zu schenken und besorgte mir nach langer Recherche einen Termin in einer Charlottenburger Privatpraxis. Ganzheitlich, aber schwurbelfrei, das waren meine Hauptkriterien bei der Auswahl.

Nach mehrwöchiger Wartezeit betrete ich die Praxis. Schon im Treppenhaus des imposanten Altbaus habe ich mir überlegt, meine schmuddligen Winterstiefel auszuziehen. Jetzt versuche ich den teuren Teppich, der zum Anmeldetresen führt, unauffällig nur auf Zehenspitzen zu betreten. Hinter dem Tresen sitzt ein ätherisches Wesen, Typ beliebtestes Mädchen im Eliteinternat. Makellose Zähne, makellose Haut, makelloses Lächeln. Ich fühle mich wie der Verfall auf zwei Beinen, wie eine Hochstaplerin, die eigentlich nicht in diese Welt gehört und wahrscheinlich gleich von diskretem Sicherheitspersonal mit Sixpacks und maßgeschneiderten Anzügen zurück auf die zugige Straße befördert wird. Aber nichts dergleichen geschieht. Das Wesen nimmt mit einer professionellen Herzlichkeit, neben der jede Rezeptionistin eines 5-Sterne-Hotels wie ein ungehobelter Dorftrampel erscheinen würde, meine Anmeldung entgegen und geleitet mich in das große, helle Wartezimmer. Auch hier fühle ich mich eher wie in der Lobby eines exklusiven Boutique-Hotels. Nix da mit an der Wand fixierten Plastikschalen, sterbender Zimmerpalme und klebrigen Apotheken-Rundschauen von 2017. Und vor allem nix da bleiche, hustende, unglücklich auf ihre Smartphones starrende Menschen: In der Mitte des Raums steht ein langer Massivholztisch, der allein schon mehr gekostet haben muss, als ich in den nächsten 2 bis 3 Jahren verdienen werde. Auf dem Tisch ein Blumengesteck, das nach viel Arbeit und Feng Shui aussieht. Daneben dicke Bildbände, die man wohl „Coffee Table Books“ nennt und hübsch arrangierte Zeitschriften, äääh, Magazine („Vouge“, „Natur und heilen“, „Brand eins“, „Falstaff“, „Art“). Aus einem nicht sichtbaren Lautsprecher tönt leise irgendjemandes wohltemperiertes Klavier, an den Wänden hängt sparsam großformatige Kunst. Obwohl ich allein bin, schiele ich verschämt auf meine Fingernägel und stelle erleichtert fest, dass sie einigermassen sauber sind. Um irgendwas anderes zu tun, als mich auf eine der skandinavischen Design-Sitzgelegenheiten niederzulassen, gieße ich mir aus einem WMF-Wasserkrug ein Gurken-Rosmarin-Wasser in ein bereitstehendes Glas.

Etwa 15 Minuten später holt mich Frau Doktor ab. Eine Frau in meinem Alter in hochpreisigen Naturfasern. Das Anamnese-Gespräch dauert 2,5 Stunden und ich fühle mich danach schon deswegen gut, weil mir jemand einfach mal zugehört hat. Direkt danach geht es zur Blutabnahme, die sich im bequemen Sessel und einem fast zärtlichen Nadelstich eher wie eine Wellness-Behandlung im Spa anfühlt.

Weil ich gerade dabei bin, mich um meine Gesundheit zu kümmern, beschließe ich ein paar Tage später auch noch den anstehenden „Check 35“ bei meinem Hausarzt in Anspruch zu nehmen. Immerhin kostet der mich nichts. Blutabnahme nüchtern um 8.00. Gegen 10.00 (ich habe alle Apotheken-Rundschauen inklusive Kreuzworträtsel durchgearbeitet, alle verfügbaren Viren meiner hustenden Mitwartenden eingeatmet und sehne mich nach einem Gläschen Gurken-Rosmarin-Wasser) darf ich zur Blutabnahme in den abstellkammerähnlichen Raum neben dem Wartezimmer.

„Ach, sie nu wieder mit ihre Rollvenen...“

Wie jedes Mal braucht Frau Radüdke mehrere Anläufe, bis sie mich angezapft bekommt und wie jedes Mal bedauere ich es ein wenig, dass ich im Anschluß an den Arztbesuch keinen Dreh als Junkie habe – Perlen vor die Säue.

„Ach Jottchen! Jutta, komm mal kiecken, dit gloobste nich!“

Ebenfalls wie jedes Mal die Reaktion auf meinen praktisch nicht vorhandenen Blutdruck. Nachdem ich meine Urinprobe im Plastikbecher einmal quer durchs gut gefüllte Wartezimmer ins Labor getragen habe, darf ich gehen.

Zwei Wochen später, Auswertungsgespräch beim Hausarzt. Ein patenter Mann um die 60, der eigentlich Zigarre rauchen müsste. Ich weiß nicht, ob er es privat tut, im Sprechzimmer darf er es auf jeden Fall nicht. 10 Minuten hat er pro Patient. Man merkt ihm aber an, dass er das selbst nicht so gut findet und das macht ihn sehr sympathisch. Er hat mir bei einem früheren Besuch empfohlen, mir wegen meiner Erschöpfung mal eine Auszeit und alles nicht so schwer zu nehmen, hat aber auch verstanden, dass das nicht so einfach ist. „Meine Nichte ist ja freischaffende Posaunistin, ich weiß, wie das bei euch Künstlern ist.“ Jetzt sitzt er mir mit dem Ausdruck meiner Laborergebnisse gegenüber und sieht mich an, als würde er mir gleich mein Diplom als Jahrgangsbeste in Quantenphysik überreichen.

„Da kann ich gar nicht viel sagen als: Weiter so! Für ihr Alter sind Sie fast schon erschreckend gesund.“

Die Schilddrüsenwerte sollten wir im Blick behalten, aber sonst... Von meiner immer noch vorhandenen Dauermüdigkeit erzähle ich nichts. Ich will nicht, dass er mich für eine Hypochonderin hält. Ich verlasse die Praxis einerseits erleichtert, andererseits tut mir die Arztrechnung aus Charlottenburg jetzt noch ein bisschen mehr weh: Offenbar geben meine Körpersäfte ja kein Siechtum preis.

Einige Tage danach, Auswertungsgespräch in Charlottenburg. Ich ziehe an, was in meinem Kleiderschrank am wenigsten nach Kreuzberger Hinterhof aussieht, reinige meine Fingernägel besonders sorgfältig und sitze gestärkt mit einem Chilli-Basilikum-Wasser im feudalen Sprechzimmer. Auch dieses Gespräch dauert über zwei Stunden und beginnt erstmal positiv: Großes Blutbild sieht gut aus, Leber fein (womit habe ich das verdient?), Niere macht was sie soll... Doch dann geht es in die Feinheiten und das Gesicht der Ärztin nimmt einen besorgten Ausdruck an: Diverse Nährstoffmängel, Schadstoffbelastung hoch, Immunsystem dreht am Rad. Hier und heute merke ich davon noch nichts außer der bleiernen Erschöpfung, die mich ja auch hierher gebracht hat, aber in ein paar Jahren ist Osteoporose noch das Niedlichste, was mir blühen könnte. Sie sagt das nicht so plump, aber es ist klar, dass es mir so, wie es jetzt ist, gar nicht gutgehen kann. Neben einer histaminarmen Diät (alles außer stilles Wasser und Pflanzenölen ist histaminhaltig – Bon appétit!) hat meine Göttin in Mauve noch viele andere Empfehlungen: Intermittierende Hypoxie-Hyperoxie-Therapie (Höhentraining), Neuraltherapie, Infusionstherapie … Klingt alles spannend, klingt alles teuer. Ich komme mir plötzlich sehr dumm vor. Wie jemand, der sich von seinem letzten Ersparten einen Porsche gekauft hat und ihn dann nicht fahren kann, weil er kein Geld mehr fürs Benzin hat. Ich einige mich mit der Ärztin auf einige der wichtigsten Nahrungsergänzungsmittel und dass ich es versuchen werde mit dem Histamin und verlasse die Praxis: Dumm, arm und sehr krank.

Weil die Ärztin auch zwei Immundefekte festgestellt hat, soll ich mich bei meinem Hausarzt gegen Pneumokokken impfen lassen. Da demnächst der Winter und eine lange Theatertournee beginnen, will ich das möglichst schnell erledigen. Unglücklicherweise ist meine Hausarztpraxis zwei Wochen urlaubsbedingt geschlossen, aber so eine Impfung müsste ich ja auch woanders kriegen. In Pankow allerdings nicht, das wird schnell klar. Dafür im benachbarten Wedding. Schon am nächsten Tag betrete ich die Praxis in einer Erdgeschosswohnung. Es ist schon dunkel, als ich ankomme. Das Licht im Flur hat einen Wackelkontakt. Draußen sind es um die null Grad, drinnen gefühlt noch kälter. Meine Schuhe kleben an irgendwas, das sich auf dem Linoleum befindet und die Frau hinter dem Empfangstresen trägt einen Wintermantel. Das Wartezimmer ist, wie der Rest der Praxis im 70er Jahre Stil mit Holz vertäfelt, besser gesagt seit den 70er Jahren mit Holz vertäfelt und in ein Neonlicht getaucht, das einen an irgendeinen Provinzbahnhof in Niedersachsen (oder Rumänien) denken lässt. Die Plastikklappstühle, die der Wand entlang aufgestellt sind, machen alle keinen vertrauenserweckenden Eindruck, aber da sie alle besetzt sind, habe ich auch gar keine Wahl: Ich bleibe stehen. Keine Coffee Table Books und auch keine Apotheken-Rundschau – nur ein paar Flyer über Hepatitis B. Ich lese mir das mehrfach durch, versuche beim Geschrei des Babys neben mir und dem in einer mir unverständlichen Sprache streitenden Paars am Fenster an den Rat meines Hausarztes „alles nicht so schwer“ zu nehmen zu denken und irgendwann werde ich ins Sprechzimmer gerufen. Vor mir steht ein Mann um die 40. Weisser Arztkittel, Gesundheitsschuhe, Stethoskop um den Hals. Fehlt nur noch dieses Dings am Kopf, dieses runde, spiegelnde, dann sähe er aus wie die Playmobil-Figur „Doktor“. Das Sprechzimmer ist winzig klein, ebenso kalt wie der Rest der Praxis und die eine Neonröhre, die noch funktioniert, summt nervös. Wenn es nicht so schummerig wäre, könnte man die Titel der diversen Diplome und sonstigen Auszeichnungen lesen, die eingerahmt die Wände tapezieren. Hinter dem Schreibtisch, an den sich der Playmobil-Arzt jetzt gesetzt hat, ein Regal und darauf - neben „Meyers Universallexikon“ oder so, wirklich und tatsächlich: Ein Totenschädel!

Ich versuche, pragmatisch zu sein. Ich brauche ja nur diese Impfung, um nicht auf der Tournee an einer Lungenentzündung zu verenden. Pragmatisch und vorurteilslos, denn schnell stelle ich fest, dass der Mann neben dem Totenschädel kaum Deutsch spricht und noch weniger Englisch. Irgendwie bringe ich mein Anliegen zum Ausdruck. Zum Glück habe ich ja auch den Arztbrief aus Charlottenburg mit dem Befund aus der Immunologie. Der Mann neben dem Totenschädel würdigt den Befund kaum eines Blickes. Dafür gibt er mir zu verstehen, ich solle mit meinem Stuhl etwas nach links rücken, da sei mehr Licht. Er mustert mich und fragt dann: „Geschwüre?“ Verständnislos blicke ich ihn an. Na, ob ich irgendwo Geschwüre habe, an Stellen, die von Kleidung bedeckt seien, will er wissen.

„Ääähm, nein, also ich habe da unter der Achsel so ein Muttermal, das...“

„Ich sehe keine Geschwüre. Gesicht, Hals, alles gut. Wenn mit Immunsystem was nicht stimmt, Geschwüre. Schauen Sie Obdachlose vorne unter der Brücke. Die haben kaputtes Immunsystem, die haben Geschwüre. Sie, nein!“

Ich frage nicht mehr nach der Impfung. Auch weil in diesem Moment die Arzthelferin ohne anzuklopfen mit zwei Sanitätern den Raum betritt. Die Frau auf der Bahre der Sanitäter hat definitiv Geschwüre. Das sehe ich trotz der mangelnden Beleuchtung. Kein Krankenhaus hat Platz für sie und die Sanitäter wissen nicht wohin mit ihr. Ich nutze die entstandene Unruhe und verlasse ziemlich beschämt die Praxis.

Inzwischen geht es mir viel besser. Die Luxusärztin hat mir neben ihrem Mikronährstoffdoping vor allem mit Zuhören geholfen, das nötig war, um auf Zusammenhänge zu kommen, die nicht so offensichtlich waren (kleiner Servicehinweis: Lasst Eure wurzelbehandelten Zähne checken!). Es ist ein gutes Gefühl, nicht erst etwas für sich tun zu können, wenn das Kind schon in den Brunnen gefallen ist. In einer Zeit, in der wir immer älter, aber nicht unbedingt gesünder werden, wäre eine ganzheitliche Behandlung und Präventivmedizin für alle vielleicht sogar kostengünstiger als die jahrelange Pflege von Menschen mit vermeidbaren Krankheiten.

In die Charlottenburger Praxis kann ich erstmal nicht mehr gehen. Gesundheit muß man sich leisten können. Krankheit erst recht!

Umso dankbarer bin ich, dass es immerhin den Hausarzt gibt. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Ländern ist auch er ein Luxus. Wenn ich dem Land wo Sauerstoff und hochdosierte Vitamininfusionen fließen doch zu sehr nachtrauere, denke ich an den Playmobil-Doktor und freue mich über meine anhaltende Geschwürlosigkeit. Ist ja auch schon was...

I really hope I don't read a life changing book in the next three weeks so this list is out of date, but this is a list of twelve books that have been dwelling in my head for the last year.

I quote them, I think about them, I think "holy cow someone wrote that" often about these and I can't wait to either the read the next one or the next thing that comes from this author (or both). I really hope you've had an amazing year of reading and I can't wait to see your own lists from 2023.

How High We Go In The Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu - A sort of slow burn book that has dwelled in my brain since I read it back in April, How High We Go In The Dark is a dark exploration of humanity connected by short stories that have a common thread through the book. The rollercoaster story lives in my head rent free, and not in a good way, it's a little bit disturbing, but I think we live in a dystopia more than we believe we do and maybe there's a metaphor in there somewhere.

Sea Of Tranquility by Emily St John Mandel - Another book that connects via short stories, this is quite common for me as I love that sort of thing, reflecting on my list of books. I think Mandel writes so poetically and brilliantly throughout this book, she delivers on pathos and emotion to really deliver stories about people, about people in different timelines connected by a strange portal moment of magic. If you love fantasy but in a more contemporary delivery, I do recommend this book to you.

The End Of The Affair by Graham Greene - I am a collector of books as much as a reader of them and this year I've been trying to read my bookshelves a bit more as I just am buying books to make myself look clever at this point, which is just lame. This was one of the first books on my shelf, and though not perfect, and damn did she deserve better, this book delves into obsession and love and what it actually means to people. It's a weird book.

Another Day In The Death Of America by Bryan Younge - I am not American, I have never seen a gun in real life in the hands of a person I know (some police have them near Parliament, well they did once I think) so I don't understand America and their passion for ammunition, but this book should not make you proud of it. This book is a gut punch through every chapter as the author details the young lives lost to guns in 24 hours. A brilliant and sad book.

Tower by Bae Myung-Hoon - My passion for Korean Literature does not abate (I am not a Koreaboo, don't worry). There's a way Korean writers write books like their objective observers on a scene that I particularly enjoy and Tower is another good example of this. Tower again is short stories tied together about a building that is it's own country and the people who live and want to live in it. The Elephant chapter hasn't left my brain since I read it and I recommend it (unless you like Elephants, then don't, cos it's again fucked up).

Beyond The Story: 10 Years of BTS by BTS - Ahh BTS, since 2017 I've known this group and their impact of my life and music taste is so ridiculous, I feel like something's walk into your life for a reason and wow, did they. The story of the rise of BTS from a lucky break on Mnet's music show to Grammy nominations (robbed!) is incredible to read and even if you don't like them it's a fascinating insight into a group that made their name in a country that was dominated by three big music companies, and they weren't on any of them - Hybe now supercedes all of them. An incredible underdog tale.

Lirael by Garth Nix - Where has this man been all my life with these books? I'm embarassed, be embarassed for me. This series is so good so far, I'm going to read Abhorsen next year which I believe is the next one and I can't wait. I would also recommend the Booksellers Of London series too by the same author, which is every bit as good and set in 80's London/Bath. Fantastic fantasy that makes you think where is the next one, give it to me now.

The Last Devil To Die by Richard Osman - Y'know, this series is so British, it should come with teabags and digestive biscuits, but I love it all the same. A series about a group of pensioners who solve mysteries, The Last Devil To Die is the fourth book in this series and it's probably for me one of the best. The storyline with Stephen is devastating and the plot is incredible with characters that come to life every time this book is opened. I can't wait for whatever this author does next and those who voted for The Housemaid on Goodreads, I'm judging you, to be honest.

Hortus Curious by Michael Perry - Plants, people. Plants are incredible, insane, incredible. There are plants who eat living things, but that's just the start of their madness. This book is an incredible exploration in fantastic plants you would think you'd only see in a Herbology classroom but here they are in real life, killing people and eating small animals. Fantastic book, if you love nature and weird stuff, this is for you.

Against White Feminism by Rafia Zakaria - I think the white women were in the house so much from this book. How women were protected in their plantations as people were treated abysmally who were just another intersection from them. I think we all need to work on our biases, prejudices and judgements we make and this is a short and brilliant book that could help you do that. I consider myself a feminist, and to be a good one you also have to shut and listen to people who don't look like you, make spaces intersectional my friends.

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang - The only romance book for me with rights this year (I keep being recommend books about hockey players and I am, that's just not going to happen). The representation of autism is fantastic and the sexy times are sexy if you need that and the characters, the characters are impeccable. I really recommend all of her books to be honest (and Talia Hibbert too, actually) as they make such great books with fantastic rep.

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman - John Green on Crash Course said about this book 'the thing about this dystopian book is that this dystopia has already happened'. Charlotte was told by her doctors to quit all her hobbies and stay in a room and do nothing and it drove her to a deeper sickness, she wrote this book during that time of recovering from her ''recovery'' and it makes for powerful reading. The whole story is easily found online for free and I highly recommend it, probably one of the first psychological thrillers.

I apologise if some of these are a bit grammatically weird, I am working on it, I only just found out I'm dyslexic hence my difficulty with small text and need for audiobooks (smh, sometimes it's so obvious it makes me shake my head).

Wait how do you feel about nix-oxen? As both just a creature and as a mount? Because I love my big bug friends and I still use my Nix-Ox Warsteed mount that I got for free in 2017 even after spending money on other mounts lol. AND! They can only be encountered in Vvardenfell and some of the Necrom-related instances afaik!

And cliff striders are also Morrowind-exclusive, I think? Hackwings can be found elsewhere but I'm not sure how related those are to cliff striders (they might have a similar model but be unrelated).

I dig nix-oxen! I think they fit in with Morrowind's fauna nicely, and I like that they gave us a relative to nix-hounds (it's making that branch of my phylogeny project easier tbh). They make sense as mounts too (there's some Morrowind concept art of people riding large bugs, and in the Redguard comic they ride wasps, so it's not at all a stretch).

Cliff striders are Morrowind exclusive, yeah. Hackwings are implied to have a common ancestor with cliff striders, and then selective breeding gave rise to cliff racers from cliff striders.
