Tané: gods always speak in mysterious riddles
Nayimathun: I just said, “you are enough”
Tané: I may never know what they mean

I love the romantic quotes from The Priory of the Orange Tree but when Niclays said, “I loathe you. I loathe every lash of your eyes, every finger on your hands, and every tooth in your mouth. I loathe you to the very marrow of your bones...You cannot fathom the depth of the enmity I have felt for you. I have cursed your name with every sunrise”...that went pretty fucking hard

Books read in 2024: THE PRIORY OF THE ORANGE TREE by Samantha Shannon
“I would visit,” Ead said. “Not . . . often, you understand. The Prioress belongs in the South. But I would find a way.” She took a cup. “I know I have said this to you once before, Sabran, but I would not blame you if you would prefer not to live that way.” “I would live alone for fifty years to have one day with you.”

Book summaries below:
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
A world divided. A queendom without an heir. An ancient enemy awakens.
The House of Berethnet has ruled Inys for a thousand years. Still unwed, Queen Sabran the Ninth must conceive a daughter to protect her realm from destruction – but assassins are getting closer to her door.
Ead Duryan is an outsider at court. Though she has risen to the position of lady-in-waiting, she is loyal to a hidden society of mages. Ead keeps a watchful eye on Sabran, secretly protecting her with forbidden magic.
Across the dark sea, Tané has trained to be a dragonrider since she was a child, but is forced to make a choice that could see her life unravel.
Meanwhile, the divided East and West refuse to parley, and forces of chaos are rising from their sleep.

The Radiant Emperor series (She Who Became the Sun, He Who Drowned the World) by Shelley Parker-Chan
In a famine-stricken village on a dusty yellow plain, two children are given two fates. A boy, greatness. A girl, nothingness…
In 1345, China lies under harsh Mongol rule. For the starving peasants of the Central Plains, greatness is something found only in stories. When the Zhu family’s eighth-born son, Zhu Chongba, is given a fate of greatness, everyone is mystified as to how it will come to pass. The fate of nothingness received by the family’s clever and capable second daughter, on the other hand, is only as expected.
When a bandit attack orphans the two children, though, it is Zhu Chongba who succumbs to despair and dies. Desperate to escape her own fated death, the girl uses her brother’s identity to enter a monastery as a young male novice. There, propelled by her burning desire to survive, Zhu learns she is capable of doing whatever it takes, no matter how callous, to stay hidden from her fate.
After her sanctuary is destroyed for supporting the rebellion against Mongol rule, Zhu takes the chance to claim another future her brother’s abandoned greatness.

bardholt and sabran vi's deaths is without a doubt one of the best scenes in adofn. two symbols of the monarchy being consumed by fire in seconds, proving that they're not untouchable like they believe they are. mere hours before bardholt was talking about taking the south and forcing them to convert to the six virtues the way he converted the north, making plans to force the entire world into virtudom. when they saw the wyrm they stood tall and proud and didn't try to run but they still burned because they're not actually special, and sabran's blood means nothing. they've always thought so highly of themselves because sabran is the blood of the saint, but in the end their saint didn't protect them, their blood didn't protect them.
this is also a great parallel to when sabran ix faces fýredel in priory, believing the saint will protect her from the fire, except that the only reason she didn't burn was because ead protected her with magic. but there was no mage guarding the queen of inys yet.
