#nightvale mayor
Text
Y'all. Y'all. They told us there wouldn't be a nightvale mayor.
Episode 7, History Week "In the year 2052 ... Approval ratings for the mayor will hover in the low 40s, which will be surprising, as there will have been no mayor for over 30 years"
Aka since Dana stepped down in 2018 (EP 129, a Matter of Blood pt 3)

Whats great about Welcome to Nightvale is its a great representation of a gay person in a rural town. There is fuckery at every corner and people die and there is an old woman inside your house and a dragon trying to become mayor, and Cecil is deeply uninterested he literally could not care less. Do you know what gets Cecil Palmer excited? A hot scientist moving to their town and a cat floating in the studio toilet.
Which is honestly about the same i would behave in that situation

"The Missing Sky" is an absolutely haunting episode. The alternate world where there is no sun, no moon, no stars, all void. Where Cecil never met Carlos. Where Nightvale is even more cut off than it is in the normal timeline. The very phrase "our absent sky" is resonant.
And yet, the world below the bowling alley is not without kindness. Cecil is friends with Steve Carlsberg. The library is a safe place. Pamela Winchell is a good mayor. It's a desolate place, in many ways the mirror image of our Nightvale, but for all its fractured strangeness, it's still a community.

if reigen were in nightvale he’d accidentally become the leader of an uprising against the government, bullshit his way to victory, be crowned mayor, then get bored and go home after a week

Fault crew in nightvale :D
Nightvale of course bristles against interlopers, but this time the discrimination is that they’re new in town, not that they’re anomalous. Progress! And obviously if Nightvale decides to keep them there’s not much the crew can do to leave, so eventually they might even settle into a proper place in the town. Having like actual jobs and homes is crazy for The Blade and Wilbur. They’re remarkable only insofar as they’re something new to gossip about, which is a game changer. Everyone is very skittish of Carlos at first bc of the Foundation, and would probably murder Dr. Janey Lubelle if she’s around when they’re there. The Dr. Blake vibe is just too much.
Tommy as an intern bc hello red shirt! In a purely goof sense I can just picture that because everything is so insanely dangerous, he can just try to pet Khoshekh at the end of each shift and The Blade is instantly summoned. This is how he gets a ride back home. Tommy is likely in the most in danger due to having minimal protection and being nosy. Immediately tries to break into the dog park because he wants to see puppers.
While happy to finally be able to walk in broad daylight, The Blade is NOT pleased with the government surveillance state and corruption and has declared war on the night vale city council. Him and Sheriff Sam are beefing hard. It’s ON SIGHT. There’s probably a plot where he tries to take down the Nightvale government and due to a random old law somehow ends up mayor and hates it. Excited to meet John Peters, you know, the farmer, and is extremely disappointed about the invisible corn. Not sure how a Huntokar and The Blood God meeting would go but I think they should. Like…a protector who is a destroyer, do you get me.
On the other hand, city council is really mad at Tubbo for all the forbidden secrets they’re just randomly stumbling across bc of the omnipresence of the swarms. Tubbo gets locked up in the radon canyon like every other day and Phil breaks them out whenever they get board of watching HBO. Tried to follow along with one of Earl Harlan’s cooking segments and got very disturbed, but Wilbur just followed the recipe not aware anything was abnormal. Plus in Tubbos’ backstory there IS an old woman Josie reference, so it’s possible they already know her and she has been using their honey in recipes for years.
Parallel between the faceless old woman who secretly lives in your home and the half faceless young man who secretly lives in no home is fascinating. She keeps leaving him like centipedes in his drawers or whatever and it just goes ‘oh nice a snack’ which probably irks her. Likes hanging with the glow cloud bc the ambient lighting stops the void, who is itself pretty chuffed with all the dead animal carcasses
Philza got a letter for jury duty during Hiram McDaniel’s trial and blew it off bc he was dealing with the Foundation. I think he’d be very chill with Josh Crayton, bonding over different forms and getting stuck in a form you didn’t plan on. Impressed with Tamika Flynn’s Librarian wrangling as a teen, though is more supportive of people growing and changing interests than Cecil dreaming of the glory days. And uhhh technically he’s responsible for the death of many nightvale interns since in chapter Phthalo I used wtnv interns to name Foundation employees. Possibly interesting implications if Chad Bowinger, Maureen Johnson, and Kareem Nazari went to work for the Foundation at some point…?

The batfamily crash land into a little town in the desert called night vale
They expect the usual treatment that comes from a situation like this, sometimes fear sometimes excitement sometimes total avoidance. Not here.
Here they were created by an army of… creatures. Winged beasts descending over them saying the great cloud has sent them a sacrifice, that they must be dealt with, a preteen girl named temika attempting to vouch for them as a radio station Blair’s to life around them sending everyone into silence as a voice comes out “and now nightvale I take you to the weather.” As everyone dashes inside with music blairing all around them as the strangest combination of music and rain poores down over them and a door to a nearby building opens, a handsome Latino man in a lab coat quickly waving them inside before closing the door and locking it shut as they get in.
“You’ll need to be quiet when we’re on air.” He whispers as they can see another man sitting in the radio booth, normal looking enough compared to the insanity outside, only to find him talking about some of the oddest occurrences they have ever heard of from a disappearing miuntain, a dragon mayor, an invisible woman living homes. If they haven’t just experienced what they did outside they would think these two were quack brain conspiracy theorists.
Then Damian found a full family of cats floating in the restroom.
Attempting the pull it down however receiving such a howel from the creature that Cecil stops the show all together, bursting in and shouting “don’t touch my cat!” Before pushing Damian out and locking the door glaring at them before continuing to the end of the show when finally they have deemed it safe enough to all ow the bat family out, though when asked where the nearest town to this was the family was only given odd looks as Cecil said “say or night, there is only night-vale. You may attempt to leave, but truly is there ever a real way to escape?” They go back to their radio shack.
“Good night night-vale.” At that every light in the town flickers off leaving the family in the darkness with the distant rumble of something from bellow.

Having recently re-listened to episode 19 B of Nightvale I can clearly say that:
Nightvale is a town run by a cult who have probably caused the curse that undoubtedly resides upon the twon, and all the citizens know it, but very adamantly live their lives refusing to adhere to the cult properly.
See old woman Josie and her angels
Or Cecil and his dog park references when he's been told by the secret council in multiple episodes to STOP mentioning it.
And that Desert Bluffs is:
A Cult run town that nobody knows is a cult because it is so entrenched and isolated as a town that they don't realise anything is wrong because they've been conditioned that way.
See the doppelganger episode B having them have a public announcement from the mayor that they're all to be DOUBLE productive today.
Their only neighbours being Nightvale further insulates the town since reporting on Nightvale seems to be non-existent in comparison to Nightvales reporting on Desert Bluffs, meaning that any abnormality remains within the cult and is unable to be explained as anything other than the usual for the entire towns lack of further reference.
Nightvale has extensive contact with the outside world, couriers refuse to enter the town limits but they DO go to the town limits and clearly exchange information, the state government has regular contact with nightvale and knows to let it be- see earthquake that did nothing and they just sent a paycheck without seeing if it was needed- and humorously they have concerts within city spotting distance - Jimmy hendrix lightshow concert that got the town gaslit into thinking pink Floyd was a collective hallucination. But the fact that they KNOW who Pink Floyd is also goes to them having external communication.
Desert Bluffs are like a workers town, everything is owned and ran by one company who are putting toxic waste into the water. Like...
(Also hearing the desert Bluffs presenter made me like super uncomfortable? The voice actor was great but the fake cheer, the brainwash-y tone was setting off all the alarm bells before I was even properly cataloguing the differences in how the opposing radio hosts handel their daily reports.)

Since Welcome to Nightvale has kind of reappeared in the collective consciousness, I wanted to give a shout out to one of my favorite pieces of media, Qwerpline:
youtube
Best way I can describe it is "take Welcome to Nightvale, mix it with Parks n Rec, and have it all made by Canadians." It follows a news show reporting on events in the town of Nsburg.
Things Qwerpline has:
-A mayor who is just a box of paperclips, named Steno Paperclips. People have been taking paperclips out of the box, and no one is sure what will happen when it is empty
-A regularly occurring "Summer Intern" character with a high pitched voice who is also a textbook definition himbo
-Local girl scouts who pack heat and use gang tactics to encourage cookie sales
-A nearby mountain range that unusually stabilizes the weather in the long term
-An underground series of prohibition rum-running tunnels that go to both Canada and Mexico
-Richter Hammockslam

funniest sub plot of welcome to nightvale i’d forgotten entirely about is how someone buys an empty storage locker called Cecil Palmer and Cecil’s like. hmm wonder what that’s about! and then a handful of episodes later it’s revealed that whoever purchased him can just kinda control him at will and make him do whatever and keeps using him to save the mayor. and he’s so disgusted by it fjjfjsfnks

a reaction to Nightvale story "A Matter of Blood" (ep. 127-9)
I LOVED THIS STORY. I loved it because it’s a perfect mix of what wtnv stories are to me : community & personal. Dana, by facing her past, is forever changing the future of Nightvale. Cecil and Carlos, by hosting their little blood matter party, reinforce the link between the citizens.
Cecil defending Steve Carlsberg can be so so so personal. Year 6 really said personal growth :)
Im always awestruck/amazed by the fact that elements from the very first episodes are detailed and are given a in-depth meaning a 100 episodes later. It forces continuity, in a show that doesn’t have one by its format. Aml this years, Dana have always be the perfect mayor (what Pamela Winchell was not, even if she was not exactly bad), and I’ve always thought that it was her character. I thought that killing her double was just something she dod in a period of trouble, and did not have an impact on her personal history. I was blind, maybe. That was not a storyline I clearly understood. But now Dana is free, and I’m happy for her
Now Nightvale enters a period of trouble, with no mayor at its head. It is maybe a better situation that an all-powerful mayor (thus, I trusted Dana for this role. But as Tamika Flinn said, « expanding government power on the assumption that the government will always be run by well-meaning people is a dangerous gamble ») I look forward what will append next !
