@uncleagonist told me about a fun little exhibit, Beautiful Monsters, coming up at a local independent theater, the Frida Cinema; so I figured I’d enter. Not sure I’ll be accepted, but in the least, it gave me another art prompt for the week. I’m a fan of Guillermo del Toro so how could I not enter. I had this idea of doing a stretching portrait similar to those in the haunted mansion at Disneyland. So, here’s what I’m entering on Friday. I’m also attempting to make a mock up of the portrait action, just to show how the artwork would be displayed in a stretching frame. The frame would start with just Eliza eating her bag lunch. Then as the portrait stretches, you’d see the creature’s hand reaching for the egg until it’s fully extended and reveals the whole creature. I’ve also had it printed so that if you shine a blacklight on the creature, his stripes glow blue, kind of like in the movie. The artwork will be for sale with profits going to the theater. Whether I make it in or not, I can’t wait to see what others are doing. Regardless, Pick me, pick me, pick me!!! . . . #disney+ #disneyland #hauntedmansion #theshapeofwater #hellboy #creaturefromtheblacklagoon #stretchingportraits #paulfreis #halloween @thefridacinema #guillermodeltoro #beautyandthebeast #forbiddenlove #moviefan #moviefanart #theshapeofwatermovie #theshapeofwaterfanart #crimsonpeak #panslabyrinth #pacificrim #nightmarealley #characterart #characterillustration #amphibianman #horror #horrormovies @realgdt https://www.instagram.com/p/CixPA6IL432/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#NightmareAlley #2021release https://www.instagram.com/p/CfONTC5Jxl8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Nightmare Alley (2021)
I’ve been a big fan of the original “Nightmare Alley” from 1947 since I was a kid. The denouncement of that film is one of the great gut punches in movies. The lead character in that film is a charming heel, but he never seemed outright evil, rather just an opportunist. The Guillermo del Toro version makes Stanton Carlisle a much more malevolent figure and that makes the remakes payoff feel even…

WIG REVIEW: NIGHTMARE ALLEY
Another Oscar bait movie, another remake of the damned!!! West Side Story did not need to be remade but actually wurqed - this movie also did not need to be remade and fully lived up to its title. IT’S A NIGHTMARE! It is also very VERY long and I watched all of it so you don’t ever have to. But what about the wigs? Let’s discuss.
Let me begin by saying: I DO NOT LIKE BRADLEY COOPER UNLESS HE IS PLAYING A 70S ASSHOLE. Definitely my enjoyment of this movie was affected by the fact that I truly did not care about him, his character, whoever he might have killed in the first moments of his movie and then set a house ablaze, and certainly not his penis. THIS IS A YEAR FOR DICKS and you almost kind of see his in this early scene in a bath if that is something you remotely care about (I DO NOT). I do, however, support Toni Collette in most things, and especially this wig! It has a nice 30s wave and texture and I wish had not been subjected to Bradley Cooper or any of his body parts.
Anyway, this movie is all carnie horrors from the getgo - tortured souls, tortured babies, tortured people, tortured chickens! It’s a lot and Guillermo del Toro clearly wants to shock and awe but the only thing I was shocked by is that NO ONE TOLD ME DAVID STRATHAIRN WAS IN THIS MOVIE YES!!!! His old lady is Toni Collette and their carnie deal is basically as fake clairvoyants: lying to people about familial dead ghosts. IT’S A LIVING! Bradley learns all he can from them and then MURDERS DAVID STRATHAIRN TO TAKE HIS COOL JOB AND IF I DIDN’T ALREADY HATE YOU BRADLEY COOPER UGHHHHHHHH.
He also charms Rooney Mara who has kind of a dumpy wig at first but does a really cool carnie trick where she electrocutes herself and man - people were really into paying to see other people get hurt in the 30s. What a time!
Rooney and Bradley leave the carnie life behind to cultivate a high class fake clairvoyant act. And after 2 years it works! They are making BANK lying to people about ghosts and wow maybe I picked the wrong profession. Rooney’s wig gets an upgrade! Bradley’s hair is still as slimey as he is but since he’s playing a career conman I guess it makes sense but also: WHO CARES. How he manages to actually psych people into believing him is never really explained and is also basically the plot of the USA show Psych except this movie is not funny at all and also endless.
2 hours (or maybe 2 days?) into this movie, Cate Blanchett shows up as a vamp/psychologist who thinks Bradley is a liar and duh she’s right but then they team up to defraud a bunch of rich assholes? Anyway, this wig isn’t bad and I definitely wanted to live in every interior she inhabited. Still, her motivations are so murky and everything is so boring at this point that like truly, no thanks.
MARY FUCKING STEENBERGEN shows up as a bereaved mother and again - this wig is very servable but deserved to be in a better movie? This is around when Bradley’s character gets really greedy about lying to rich people about ghosts and it ends in a murder/suicide because sure?
AND THEN! Rooney Mara and her slightly longer but still very boring wig try to escape the clutches of Bradley’s nonsense (and blatant cheating on her with Cate Blanchett in a weird Carol reunion no one wanted) but somehow agrees to one more con in which she has to appear as the dead lover of rich asshole Richard Jenkins.
This is where shit really just turns into a Guillermo del Toro nightmare nonsense fest and all logic - wig and otherwise- go out the window. In this scene in which Rooney appears as this fake ghost, she has to both cover herself in fake blood AND wear a wig for reasons unknown. WHY!!! She wears a wig in a turn of the century updo and then quickly removes it to run away from Richard Jenkins but like - WHY DID YOU NEED A WIG? Your hair was the same color and length of this ghost lady - just use bobby pins???? The wigs up until this point were fine but this plot point turned the tides. I love a wig on wig reveal but THIS ONE IS UNNECESSARY AND STUPID! Then again, this whole movie is unnecessary and stupid.
VERDICT: DOESN’T WURQ

Nightmare Alley (2021)
Without a doubt, everyone involved in Nightmare Alley was fully-on board and 100% committed. There’s an obvious love for the source material (it’s based on a 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham). Maybe too much love. At 150 minutes long, the picture needs trimming and the amount of time spent with it means the ending can be seen too far in advance. Still, it’s a great-looking film with magnificent sets and costumes, with great performances, and is very much worth your time.
Working as a carny, Stanton “Stan” Carlisle (Bradley Cooper) learns the ins and outs of the clairvoyant act and decides to form a two-person act with fellow performer Molly (Rooney Mara). After one of his performances as “The Great Stanton” catches the eye of psychologist Dr. Lilith Ritter (Cate Blanchett), he recklessly disregards the advice given to him by his teachers and begins an elaborate con to take advantage of the powerful Ezra Grindle (Richard Jenkins).
There's A LOT is going on here. The main plot kicks off once Stan and Molly leave the carnival but you could make an entire movie about their time as performers: Stan learning the tricks of the trade, the frightening secrets that accompany certain attractions, the skills and mental state required to stay afloat while making your living with cons, etc. There’s a natural eeriness present. This place has drawn Stan to it - must be something to do with the opening scene in which he burns down his home. There’s plenty of sexual intrigue as Stan gets close to Zeena (Toni Collette) - the clairvoyant whose alcoholic husband, Pete (David Strathairn) teaches Stan the ropes - to Molly, and then to Lilith Ritter. The latter of which is particularly bewitching. She keeps warning Stan about Ezra but you can tell she’s enjoying the scam. Then, there’s Ezra and the dead woman he wants to contact. How did she die? Why is he obsessed with her?
That's gold, and it’s easy to see why Guillermo del Toro (who directs and co-writes with Kim Morgan) wanted to keep everything but that’s the thing about adaptations: you have to cut some stuff out. This Nightmare Alley (there was another adaptation in 1947) feels like it’s keeping everything. It all comes together, there aren’t any characters or conversations that don’t pay off eventually but during that first half, it’s easy to feel restless while you wonder where things are headed.
Can we gush about this cast? Along with the others are Willem Dafoe and does Ron Perlman (wouldn’t be a del Toro film without him) as carneys. They're all given rich, multifaceted roles that make the dark material feel that much more unnerving. Visually, it’s a splendid picture. Everything looks authentic, from the carnival to the 1940s New York, everything is convincing. This is the kind of movie that will need endless hours’ worth of bonus features to show you all of the costumes and sets that made this world come to life. I’d bet money on some awards being thrown towards the cinematographer, set, and costume designers.
Nightmare Alley may not be Guillermo del Toro’s best film but it’s hard not to fall a little bit in love with a project with this much passion in its veins. While you might see the ending coming from a bit too far away, it’s still chilling. (Theatrical version on the big screen, December 21, 2021)
