"The first of May 1925, Solario came to me today asking for a once-over. I found this odd because I had just finished maintenance on him not a week ago, but I'm not foolish enough to ignore my engines when they say something is wrong. He asked to speak with me in private. I eyed him warily but had my workshop cleared regardless. He said he was visited by a small purple tank engine the night before. From how he described this engine, it didn't match any I knew about, but I let him continue. He said that she had chosen him to be her guardian, that his kind heart and brave soul would be of great use, and then he paused, a look of contemplation on his face. I pressed for more, and he said she disappeared in a flash of golden light.

My expression must have been one of unamusement because Solario asked for a chance to prove what he saw was real. I was unsure of what he meant but allowed him to, and before I could object, a golden dust enshrouded him. I could see him start to fade. I must admit it gave me a shock. I fell from my stool, but something most peculiar happened. When the dust settled, before me where Solario was, a man stood, dressed in a green jacket with 'LNER' embroidered across the left breast pocket, while the right had '4473' across it, and his trousers matched the same green with black and white lining down the sides.

His hair was a blinding blonde, and he had eyes as green as his coat. I called out to him, worried about what had happened to my engine, but he proved his identity by reciting the conversation we had when he first awoke two years ago, and we talked at lengths about how he came to be like this. All I can say for now is this is most interesting."

But a curator's job isn't just planning maintenance and events; sometimes this job can be more than what we signed up for.

[Dr. Collins produces a small wooden box from the desk he's standing at and takes out a weathered conductor whistle]

"This is a conductor whistle. It was entrusted to the NRM after its owner passed. Now, while gold dust can be volatile if misused, it can be a useful tool for those who wield it."

[Dr. Collins wipes the mouthpiece with his sleeve before blowing into it. The whistle bathes him in a cloud of golden dust, and he disappears, causing the group to panic before he reappears in the back of the room]

"Pretty neat, right?"

[Dr. Collins's sudden reappearance startles the class]

"Sorry for the scare, everyone, but I'm guessing you're going to take what I say a little more seriously. Sure, every machine you have needs its fuel to run, but this is what keeps them alive; it's their soul. But while I am the Lead Mechologist, I think it more prudent for you to hear from someone who doesn't just use gold dust for cheap tricks. So please welcome Mrs. Morgan Merlin, or as you would know her, LNER 4468 Mallard."

[A tall, tanned woman in a dark blue suit and matching skirt with bright red heels walks into the room with a look of unamusement on her face]

"How many times do I have to tell you not to use gold dust for cheap tricks?"

"Ducky, I was just using it so they'd take me seriously."

"Get out and stop calling me Ducky."

[Dr. Collins leaves the room, shutting the door behind him. Mallard clears her throat before continuing]

"Now, a few things before we continue. 1. Yes, I'm the real Mallard; the one downstairs is a replica. 2. Yes, I can still use my engine form; I just haven't in a while. 3. Do NOT call me Ducky. Understood?"

[The group either nods or responds in the affirmative]

"Now, it is part of your job as curators to help us guardians complete our duties. As such, most of the UK's guardians and all remaining former guardians that survived scrap are stationed here. Myself, Evening Star, Lode Star, and Sterling Number One are all guardians, and I have been given their permission to talk about their status with you.

This brings us to another point. Knowledge about guardians is hush-hush. You tell no one other than those above you or your fellow curators this information. If fallen into the wrong hands, it could spell disaster for sentient machines everywhere.

Now..."

[Morgan writes on the chalkboard]

"Application of gold dust. Gold Dust has many uses, one being teleportation like you saw Dr. Collins demonstrate. However, it is not just for travel; it can be used for offense and defense as well."

[Golden dust envelopes Morgan's hand and condenses into a golden blade. She holds it up for the entire class to see]

"There are many dangers guardians face, many of them being supernatural in nature. Gold dust not only allows us to battle these threats if necessary, but it also defends us from them as well."

[Her "blade" disperses into a cloud of dust again, reshaping into a shield]

"As you may have already guessed, gold dust allows guardians to shed their mechanical forms and become human with an appearance based on both the physical attributes of whatever machine they are and their perception of themselves."

[Morgan disperses her shield, the dust seeps into her skin, then she gestures to herself]

"As you can see, my engine is in perfect condition, and I'm very confident in myself and my abilities. That's not to say that heavier-set guardians aren't confident with their forms; much like you humans, our forms still have a bit of an unknown factor when we transform into them for the first time. Things like skin tone, hair color, and eye color vary.

Some of you may have noticed I mentioned that guardians face off with the supernatural. One of our most common foes are wraiths. They are spirits of machines that have died and chosen not to travel on to the Grand Terminus, and instead choose to roam and seek out humans. I can assure you, you do not want to find yourself cornered by a wraith. There are not very many things in this world that will bring you a more painful demise.

The other type of enemy we face is called the Blighted. They range vastly from machine to machine, but they are the poor souls that have been unfortunate to have been infected with Crimson Rot. Their minds are subsumed by it; they become a husk of their former selves, attacking any machine to siphon their victim's gold dust, feeding the parasitic infection.

Make sure to check your machine carefully for unusual rust or rotting of wood or other such materials, especially if they work in or around a scrapyard. Crimson Rust likes to fester in scrapyards to drain what little gold dust dying machines have left."

[Morgan's watch beeps twice, causing her to sigh]

"We will explain the rest of a guardian's duties in the next class, so do be there. Class dismissed."

After the rush of mythos suddenly losing jobs and finding new careers in new places, some of the more older mythos from decades past came out of hiding. One of which being the Sterling's, the Sterling family either escaped and went into hiding, were unfortunately found and killed, or some of the girls in the family went into raising their replacements. Emily was one of them. A female dullahan with a colt pixy as a steed, Emily was pushed into the role of raising the GNR's next newest prize, the one to take up the name of the railway- Great Northern Greasley. Or who his father nicknamed, Gordon. Emily had been a prominent maternity figure in Gordon's life for his whole childhood, the one whom he happily called mother. When Gordon crashed and lost his wings, Emily was deemed unneeded, but instead of being killed she was given freedom by Sir Nigel personally, he guided her out to a place to hide, where Emily ran off into the night never to be seen again until the passing of the law. Emily wanted to get back into working for a railway again, and she was in luck as Sodor had begun to become a hot spot of mythos still looking to work on a railway. She was accepted almost on the spot when she mentioned she was a Sterling, the Hatt's needed someone who had extensive experience so she was brought on. So then imagine to both Emily and Gordon's surprise when they saw each other at Knapford, and to the other's surprise as well when Gordon informed them that this beautiful lady was his mum.

mmmkay, I’d assumed that season 2 of NYbN, like season 1, had some handwavey timeskips worked in that I hadn’t bothered to keep track of. Things got a little fuzzy since I wasn’t going back and rewatching old episodes between weekly airings, but I got a loose sense that events were unfolding over the course of a couple weeks, maybe even a month.

Apparently this is incorrect.

NIGHT 1 (episodes 1 & 2): The Camterie goes to The Frosted Glass and apprehends Lizzie. Rafferty says they will escort her home the next night.

NIGHT 2 (episode 3): Camterie visits The Cage. Brawn beats the shit out of Airbox.

NIGHT 4 (episode 4): Brawn only has 2 opportunities to heal aggravated damage from his fight in the pit before the events of episode 4, meaning at most the Camterie had one night of downtime. so my dad’s birthday is coming up and today i went to go buy him a bottle of his favourite whisky. it’s not the most common bottle but you used to be able to find it in sainsburys or waitrose for around £50 without too much bother.

imagine my shock today when i spend two hours just trying to find places that had it in stock, only to find it priced at one hundred and twenty pounds sterling from a uk supplier. that is stupid money for a non-specialist whisky.

so i look further, i dig deeper. i find a whole host of german and spanish shops who sell it for around €60 (a totally reasonable amount and within actual value of that whisky.) annoying that i’ll have to risk getting it shipped but hey, perfect otherwise. ohohohoho, not so fast bitch. none of these sites will ship to the uk. n o n e. i can get a bottle of whisky shipped to tanzania but not scotland, where, you know, it’s fuckin’ MADE.

anyway. if you wanted to see an example of brexit in action, it’s this. if you wanted to know what it’s like living in the uk, it’s this applied to every possible facet of your life whilst our government squawks about ‘freedoms’ and ‘removing bureaucratic red tape’ and ‘economic opportunity’ like a parrot shoved up nigel farage’s ass.

My Highlights from ROH Supercard of Honor 2023

Well it's Wrestlemania weekend which means TK is back on his insane booking for ROH. 2 for 2 now he's brought about some absolutely banging cards.

I know there's also Rampage, SD and HOF tonight, but since none are PPVs I'm just gonna do this one today. Mania will be late though since I'll have to watch Night 1 and 2 back to back given how I have family plans on Sunday.

But without further ado, let's see the good stuff from ROH Supercard of Honor

Spoilers for the PPV of course

All the Zero Hour matches slapped

Big pluses for Cobb as well; Omega, Moose and Williams matches on the trot takes monster stamina

NIGEL MCGUINNESS! Back on Commentary is nice but I'm sure everyone hopes he can return to the ring, I know some want him in BCC

Mack vs Takeshita didn't disappoint either, love both of these guys and they were just back and forth

Caprice and Ian vibing with Willow's theme

Sterling giving Slim J a spare shirt after ripping his in the entrance

Stu and Slim J are still very underrated, they're both an explosive feral style of wrestler

Ah so the Righteous aren't going to WWE after all, Righteous vs Dark Order might be an interesting feud

The absolute MADMAN TK is to not only book Vikingo vs Komander but to have it open the main show

An apt comment given how I'm gonna watch HOF after but seeing Vikingo is like watching Rey Mysterio's early days

And I absolutely love that Second Rope In-and-out Phoenix Splash

Komander literally ran the entire ring rope length to swanton onto Vikingo out the ring

Yeah give me Vikingo vs AR Fox, (give me Vikingo/AR Fox against anyone really), Blake and Metalik are great too

Surprised the Embassy retained too, given all we've heard about Cage's contract running out it seemed like he'd drop

Athena may be a nasty violent heel but the amount of fun she's having is great to see, she is thriving in this role

The finish was smart too, Athena using the ref to obstruct the Magical Splash/450 and then hit the mid-rope O-Face

Samoa Joe's STF looks painful as hell

Another surprise retaining as well, shame Briscoe couldn't win though

Garcia's been having a pretty good month ngl, matches vs Brody King, Adam Cole and now Tanahashi, definitely been on the up

'You're a wrestler' chants to put Garcia off too, that story ain't over

Evoking Nakamura as well!

Garcia did a stunner to Tana's injured leg, things you don't see too often

New ROH tag belts look neat, same style as the new world title

Doomsday Device from outside the ring was meaty, the proximity to the steps has been making me nervous all show though

Ladder Sandwich as well

Top Flight's...I have no idea what to call it but they propelled each other up the ladder, then they caught a chair thrown at them!

Jose vs Alex finally getting to throw down

I saw that Destroyer coming and it was still INSANE

Glad to see Lucha Bros win, I still backed Aussie Open but not upset with this outcome

Moxley here with Yuta is interesting

I also have to give huge props for TK being able to work Shibata into matches which are both hyped and suited for his style. The OC match allowed him to take his time when he needed, and Pure Rules is perfect for his technical style

Shibata is a wrestling champion again

AEW's Dynamite card is insane, plus Athena vs Miyu on ROH can slap

Claudio went back to the classical version of his theme music, I'll miss the old one but this does match the pompous and cocky energy the BCC are exuding

Eddie going at Claudio immediately, the story we've built wouldn't offer anything less

These two have really been clattering each other too

Having watched the video of their backstory, the Ricola counter/Uraken was still a great nearfall

Meaty gutwrench to the outside of the ring

Kicked out of the Gotch Neutralizer at One!

The finish was greatly heartbreaking, Kingston countering the Ricola with a rana, only to be scooped up and fall a single second short

Shibata making sure Claudio and Yuta didn't jump Eddie

Shibata feuding with the BCC is something I can get behind, Danielson, Claudio, Moxley, there are all dream matches

Eddie saying fuck and shit for a closing promo is very on brand XD

Conclusion

Another great show, it did struggle to match the opener but it got there eventually. No matches were bad and with ROH tapings now TK has been having a lot of fun bringing out the goods without having to worry about ratings. McGuinness back is a big get for ROH as is Shibata as Pure Champion.
