“Mr. Levinson?” Ari looks up from his magazine he had just been staring at, annoyed at all the clearance that was necessary for this job. It was a house completely out in the middle of nowhere. A house so far off the beaten path, one would assume they were in an endless loop of trees. “Miss Romano will now see you. Should you be hired, make sure you wear different shoes.”
Ari glances at his old worn boots; a bit dusty, stained in paint, and sure a bit dirty. He didn’t ask to come to this ridiculously white office. Why was everything so white? Not even a fingerprint in sight. Possibly the rumors of burned off fingerprints was factual.
His heavy footfalls carry him into Miss Romano’s office, and she looks up from her computer glaring at him. “I didn’t ask to come here, sweetheart,” Ari smirks, planting himself on a white coach, and she grimaces at him. Even she is decked out in white. Head to toe. White business dress that clings to every inch of her curves. Some things never changed. She hadn’t aged a day.
“Mr. Levinson, we take people going to Waverley Road very seriously,” her long manicured fingers tap on the desk, and she slides her chair back. Walking in front of the desk to lean against the edge. His eyes roam up and down every inch of her, “And we take people abusing the ability to get onto the property very seriously. You understand what you are signing on for? People not directly involved in my family’s business rarely ever make it this far.”
“Family business, huh? Is that what they’re calling the mafia these days?”
“I’m not quite sure I follow, Mr. Levinson,” Ari nods his head, even though he is aware that she knows exactly what he’s referring to. “A background check was done on you. A lot of petty crime. You will not be permitted inside of the house.”
“Why? Do you have a princess locked up in that tower?” The woman stands unmoving. They did. They had some princess locked in there all alone in the middle of nowhere, “Just how many flowers of Waverley Road are there? I lost count.”
“Mr. Levinson.”
“Rumors of the Romano flowers are all throughout the city. None as beautiful as you, Miss Lotus Romano. Unwed because she’s unfit, and can’t be used as a bargaining tool. Magnus knows her worth, and wants to keep his pretty little daughter happy. Which one finally was sold to the highest bid of Jack Bass? Which one gets to be bought by Bart Bass? The Romanos are in the Basses pocket, and everyone knows it. Can’t forget your little delinquent of a sister. Has she ever been found?”
“Are you finished, Mr. Levinson. Insulting my family is not a great way to get a job. I am the one allowing you into our family mansion. I am the one that will either give you this job, or take it away from you. Do not question my authority in my family,” Ari’s eyes slowly blink close as he tilts his head to her. Leaning back and getting more relaxed in his chair.
“The last interview I had there was only three files on your secretary’s desk. You don’t have too many people vying for a chance to work for your family. I believe I’m all that you’ve got. You don’t have a choice. My work is good and clean. And I come with great references. Where is Nicky? Getting his cock sucked by some bimbo?”
“Now that is enough,” she slaps her hand on the desk, turning her back to Ari. He could speak all he wanted to about her family, but bring up Nick, and she shuts down, and shows emotion. She calmly picks up her phone, ringing her secretary, “Cici, have Nick escort Mr. Levinson to Waverley Road. If he’s to have anyone working with them, they have to be cleared with me, and he’s only allowed one person.”
“Uh, Frank Adler?” Ari clears his throat, because a request for some help had already been sent in. If it hadn’t made it to Lotus, there was no telling when Frank would be approved.
“His file is being processed. That may take a couple of weeks.”
“A couple of weeks? How the fuck am I going to get any work done?”
“Figure it out,” Lotus gently lays her phone back on the receiver. Walking around to her chair, and ignoring Ari, “You may go. Nick will make sure you make it to Waverley Road in one piece. And if Mr. Adler should be cleared, he will join you. There is a small house in front of the mansion, you can stay there, Frank as well, should he be approved. Make sure that you have your bags packed. You’re going to be stuck on Waverley Road until all the repairs are finished. Should you need something, Nick can be of assistance. Should you want to leave, don’t. We own you now, Mr. Levinson.”
Bitch. Ari stands, and walks back out to the foyer, waiting on his former roommate. Lotus really was the cold bitch that everyone claimed that she was. Heart of stone, and no fucks given, but she had a weakness. This is what Ari wanted and needed. And he had completed this part. Now onto the mansion.
Nick looks at himself in the mirror, straightening out his hair when he looks at his phone, “Hey, sweetheart.”
“I asked you not to call me that while in this building. Mr. Levinson was approved. You need to take him to Daddy’s summer mansion.”
“Isn’t your baby sister there?” Nick did not foresee the luck of having the most awkward and needy of the sisters at the mansion. A girl that would open up to anyone that was giving her attention.
“And that’s where she will stay, until Daddy decides what he’s going to do with her. There are a few that she has caught the eye of. Don’t know if they are profitable though.”
“You know casually talking about your sisters being in an arranged marriage is a little concerning. Should I be alarmed?” His eyebrow cocks up as he shuts down his office.
“I’ve got the files, Nicky. No one has ever asked for my hand in marriage, and Daddy has never offered. I supposed I’m going to remain an old spinster that is too smart for this whole operation.”
“Would you take marrying someone you’re in business with? Like, I don’t know, the man that has no one above him in this family, but your father?” He would continue to ask any chance he got, until she said yes.
“You forget, this is only business. Don’t confuse casual sex with anything more than a fix. Take Mr. Levinson to Waverley Road.”
“Make sure you’re waiting at my house, in one of the pretty little lace numbers I got you. I’ll take your Mr. Levinson to the mansion, and explain the ground rules. I’ll see you when I return,” he doesn’t wait for a response. He never does. And she is always waiting for him. Every time. Giving him so much, and so little all at the same time. It was infuriating that the one thing he wanted, she was still keeping guarded. Her heart.
He struts out into the waiting room, snapping a finger towards Ari, “Follow me. You sure know how to piss people off, you know that?”
“Well, what’s the fun in knowing I got the job if I can’t play around a bit? So Lotus Romano?”
“What?” Nick stops to turn around and look at the man. Ari is a beast. Taller than most men he had ever seen, and wide. His skills we’re definitely better suited in other avenues besides a carpenter.
“Who is at this mansion?” Ari gives his old friend a wink. Nick was not someone he wanted to piss off. He needed Nick, and clearly he and Lotus did not want to joke about their ‘relationship’.
“It’s best if you leave that one alone,” Nick responds, spinning on his heels and continues to the parking garage.
“Why is that?” Dig a bit more. It was what Ari is good at. Get more information, and if she was as pretty as her sisters, how bad could it be?
“She’s barely legal.”
“Ahh, but she is legal. Is she promised to someone? Chuck Bass maybe? Would he finally sell one of his daughters to a more age appropriate man? How is Jack’s new bride?” Nick grunts out his own frustrations. Magnus was living in the dark ages. “He had all those girls for more than having children, huh?”
“I don’t want to talk about them. They have very little say in what he’s doing. Lavender will fall in line like her sisters before her.”
“Worked out well for Dahlia,” Ari surmises, settling himself in Nick’s car. “How is she?”
“Teller keeps her busy. She got what she wanted. Away from the Basses, and away from her father.”
“And why do you suppose that is?” Nick keeps his eyes on the road. As long as Ari didn’t bring up Lotus, he was okay. No one ever got away with speaking about her. “So, Jack’s bride complied, and the Basses still funded Magnus’ dying empire. He’s nothing without the Basses. He basically became a tool for them. They’ll continue to use him to get what they want, and when they’re done, well, you know what will become of Magnus and his daughters.”
“And what exactly are you going to do about it?” Nick turns to glare at Ari. A man that talked a big game about something he was not technically a part of. It was complicated.
“Nothing. I’m just a carpenter. Being forced to live out in the middle of nowhere, I can't leave my base until the repairs are done. Out there all alone with nothing to keep me busy but a barely legal flower.”
“Going inside of the house is unwise. You are to stay outside,” another warning of staying outside, and not entering the house.
“Why? Is there something wrong with Rapunzel?”
“She is to be kept chaste,” Ari snorts. They were never really chaste. None of them. People talk. Little girls locked up in towers always had their vices. Their way with men and women to get what they wanted. More so of what they needed. “Bart isn’t interested. However, there are others that are looking at Lavender. The flowers of Waverley Road are now a legend.”
“What about Lotus,” Nick warps the car over to the side of the road, and wraps his hand over Ari’s throat. “Easy. We’re on the same side.”
“You do not deserve to speak her name,” Nick spits out at him. That was his first strike.
“What happens when she’s sold to the highest bidder? Dahlia was smart, she got out while she could. Leaving her sister to be claimed and promised to Jack. Lotus isn’t promised to anyone. Do you think that will last? Do you think her father won’t sell her?”
“She’s valuable on her own. Magnus needs her, and her brains.”
“And her sisters are nothing but the flesh in between their legs? I see. Things worked out well for Orchid,” the oldest of the sisters. The one who stood tall and proud. Walked side by side with her husband. A man that would kiss the ground she walked on, if she asked.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” Nick huffs, putting the car back into gear. Turning onto the famed road, and the long journey to the mansion. No one ever knew or understood the Romano family. Even Nick, despite Lotus randomly dropping tidbits.
“Do I not? I’m risking my life being here.”
“No one asked you to,” Nick whispers. It was a lie. One that they were both aware of. Ari was asked. And it was worth the risk, should he be successful.
Trees are so heavy down this road a lesser man would feel as if he was losing his mind. There was nowhere to go but forward, or back from which you came. No one dared to come out this far, and judging by the security stations on the way in, they would never make it to the point that they currently are. Guarded by more than the maddening forest.
It was boring. No wonder he was being asked to live on the property. “How much land does Magnus own?”
“All of it,” Nick answers with finality. Ari had pissed him off. Nick was easy to talk to, until you made him get into his head about Lotus. “You are not to go into the mansion.”
“So I’ve heard.”
“There’s your quarters,” Nick points at a small cabin, not at all grand. “It’s big enough to sleep at least four people. You will be given a car that you can commute from here to the mansion. You are not to step foot inside. Lavender can be a bit persuasive, you are not to listen to her under any circumstance. However, should her life be in danger, you risk yours to save her. That is how it goes. You wanted to be surrounded by the flowers. You are. And this…”
A gigantic mansion comes into view. An otherworldly and old look to it with ivy growing up the sides. It looks haunted. Should anyone happen to unluckily stumble upon it, it would terrify them. And right by the pool was a gorgeous and completely nude young woman sunbathing.
“My god,” Nick, irritated puts his car into park. “She was told you were coming today. Cover your eyes,” Ari would not. Perfect tits on that one. She was hot, and she knew it. Fresh Brazilian wax. She wanted to be seen. “Lavender! Put some fucking clothes on.”
Her mouth turns up into a smirk, but she doesn’t move, “If I am to live out here all alone, I’m going to take advantage of the privacy.”
“And I told you,” she stands up, and Ari gets a full body look at her, turning back around to awkwardly bend over to gather her hat. Awkward because she wanted Ari to see her puffy, velvety, and scrumptious cunt. “Lavender!”
“Aw, Nicky, don’t look as I walk away,” Nick turns away from her, and grabbing both tits, she jiggles them just for Ari to see. Ari would not be staying away from her. She wanted to show him her body, and he was going to look. “I’m going inside to fuck myself.”
“I hate you. How am I ever going to tell your sister about this?”
“Just don’t tell her I put a strap on my giant teddy,” Ari likes her. He was sure she was more talk than anything. But she needed it. Bad. “Daddy has me out here all by myself, I should be able to have some fucking fun!”
“Go fuck your teddy bear then!” Lavender flips his back off before finally walking into the house. She wasn’t entirely lying, and wasn’t entirely telling the truth. Fixing the roof she was told. She was aware of the area where the roof leaked. And she had a plan. If she was going to be out here bored while all her sisters got to have a man touch them, she was going to have some fun. With the carpenters.
“Ignore her.”
“How can I? My god, she either needs someone to lay her over their lap and spank her ass, or she needs a real good fucking,” he tilts his head, trying to continue to look at her. Still she was shaking her tits at him. Pinching her nipples, before walking away.
“She’s a liar. All she wants is attention, and you’re giving it to her,” Nick slaps Ari in the back of his head. Ari and her could potentially be a problem, or the best thing they didn’t plan on, “Your boxes will be coming here by tonight. This is the key to your car. There is the garage. I’ll have Lotus message you the key codes for everything. And stay out of the fucking house.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Ari groans, getting out of the car. “This my supplies?” He asks, pointing over to a mountain of lumber and boxes upon boxes of things.
“Yes. Have fun, Ari. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Also, Magnus and the other girls will be here tonight for dinner. Make sure you’re at home.”
“So you’re saying if I want to fuck the princess I better do it before tonight?” He bites at his lip, looking back into the house, hoping to see those perfect tits.
“I’m saying don’t be looking at tits, and have nothing done before they get here,” jumping into his car, Nick drives back into the city, and back to Lotus’ office. Speaking of fucking, she owed him dessert. She could continue her work, while he feasted on the sweetest thing he had ever tasted.
Ari looks up at the mansion, wondering where Lavender had gone. He just wanted to have some fun, and enjoy something nice to look at. Instead he starts opening up a few of the containers. Sweat pours down his brows as he unloads everything. Minor repairs, and it would get done faster with a crew. But Magnus didn’t want a crew here.
Hearing one of the sweetest little moans, he looks towards a window. There she was. Still needing to be seen. Playing with her tits, and grinding on the arm of a couch. Ari completely knows why Magnus didn’t want a crew. She is looking straight at him begging, “Ari!” She whines, placing her hands in front of her to grind even faster.
Her tits look even more amazing as she works herself over the furniture. “Ari, the door is unlocked.”
“Well, hell,” it was an invitation, and who was he to say no. Walking into the mansion, and breaking the one main rule he has, he follows her desperate sounds. Tiptoeing into a sitting room, and there she was. One of the most amazing women he had ever met. What a welcome gift he was getting. “What cha doing?”
“Imagining I was riding you?” She was needy. Moving over this arm of the couch like her life depended on it. “You like my titties?”
“Oh I love them. You making a mess on the couch?”
“Uh huh. You can lick it up if you want. You can play with my tits, too.”
“Oh, I think I want you to lick it up,” her eyes go wide as she stares up at him. Black seas of lust in her eyes, glossy and still so innocent. He steps closer, reaching out to pinch both of her nipples. “You never been talked to like that? If you want to be a desperate little slut, I can treat you like one.”
He rolls her nipples in between his fingers, and she arches her back, bringing herself closer to him. Moving her hands behind her, Ari sees her pretty puffy lips spread over the leather. A trail of slick gathering on the arm. She was a pretty little thing. “I’m going to suck your tits, okay?”
“Uh huh, please!” He wanted his fingers in her. His mouth closes around one nipple, and her body loses self control. Screaming out his name, until he pulls off her with a pop. Looking at her wide eyed at her outburst. Her juices drip down onto the couch and floor.
“Did you just squirt from me barely sucking on your nipple?”
“What?” Ari’s hand swipes up her honey, showing her just how soaked his fingers are. “I uh…”
“Show me your pussy. I’ll taste that, too. If you think sucking on your nipples feels amazing. Sucking on you right here,” his finger touches her clit, and she shivers, mewling out his name, while her body searches for more pressure from him. “Show me.”
Lavender scoots down onto the couch, legs already spreading wide, and Ari gulps. She was an easy target, “Tell me, sweetheart,” Ari begins as he gets down to his knees, smiling down at her bare and leaking cunt, “Who visits out here?” His hand lays flat over her mound, and she squeals. “Uh uh, who visits out here?”
“No — no one.”
“I don’t feel like you’re being truthful. Big house, sweet little slut like you, all alone with just me. What would happen if I fucked you right here?”
“No!” She shakes her head no rapidly, and when he tries to remove his hand she slaps her own over his. “You can play with me. No sex.”
“We did just meet, hmm?” leaning a bit closer, his hand slides up to spread apart her lips, giving just the most sweet kiss over her bundle of nerves. “Who comes out here? Your father?” Peering up at her, his tongue flicks over her little bean, and Lavender struggles to talk.
“Sometimes. I don’t want to talk about him right now.”
“Who else?” She gives him a little pout, trying to pull him closer to her heat. Needing nothing more than to have him kitten lick her again. “No, you tell me who else comes here, and I’ll suck on this clit, until you’re coming in my mouth. Maybe put a finger in that sweet puss.”
“Bus-bus-business associates. The Basses, and…some man I don’t know. Please, Ari, I want you to put a finger in me.”
“Only one for now. Maybe you can figure out who else is coming here for me, and I’ll give you even more fingers. I don’t want anyone to walk in on me feasting on your cunt. Just be a good girl for me, and I’ll make sure to ruin you, okay?”
She nods her head, and Ari dives right in. Wrapping his lips around her overly sensitive clit, and swiping a finger up and down her slit. Letting her get good and squirmy until he sinks one finger in. Her walls immediately start pulsing around him. She was a responsive little thing. A perk of the job he supposed. Get information and get to fuck her. It wasn’t a bad trade off.
Pumping his finger in and out of her, and her hips start to move with him. Her hands squeeze on her tits. Magnus was a fucking idiot. Leaving this pretty young thing that was begging to be fucked all alone. And she had a mouth on her. Willing to say anything as long as she was touched and got off.
She was ridiculously tight. Clearly she was pretty inexperienced. Which made her a danger to herself. Or maybe she was the perfect daughter to sell to pay for his next business venture. He was an idiot. She wouldn’t be inexperienced when Ari finished with her.
“Ar-Ar-Ari!” His arm was dripping in her cream and slick. Lines of arousal puddles into his hand, and the loudest squelching sounds he had ever heard echo in the empty house. She is just about gone. Dumb and pliable. Just for Ari. “Ari!” She screams, gushing into his mouth. “Ari!” Her voice starts to go soft as she pushes him away, “Stop. Stop, I’m throbbing.”
“Yeah,” he leans back, wiping her honey off his beard. Keeping her lips spread, “Look at that little clit. It’s all swollen. You can see your heartbeat in it. Did you have fun, Rapunzel?”
“Uh-huh,” she is mesmerized looking down at her little hole. He had made her feel things that she had never felt before. They both watch as he drags his finger out of her quivering hole, and he gives it a long stare. Projecting spit onto her spread cunt before rubbing it in. Giving her sensitive nub a flick, she trembles. “Can we do it again?”
“Remember what I said, princess,” Ari slips his soaked up fingers past her lips, and like a good girl, she sucks her juices and his spit off him. “And I’ll look at and taste that cunt whenever you want me to. But I hear your family is coming over tonight. You better clean up your mess. You’d hate daddy to see what a mess you made. Maybe next time I’ll let you fuck my fingers. Just have them there while you and those pretty tits bounce. Run along. Don’t wear clothes the next time I see you.”
She sits up, and hungrily kisses on Ari’s mouth. Tasting her arousal and moaning before she sits back, making her tits jiggle for him before going to get some things to clean up the mess. She was trouble. But what a fun trouble she was going to be.
“Daddy!” The oldest of the Walker children runs up to his father. Jumping into his father’s arms, and August throws him up in the air. “Daddy, we’re going to the castle when you get dressed.”
“I know, buddy. You want to pack you and sissy some toys? I think mama said we’re staying the night. It’s such a long drive back out to the city,” he sets his son down, and Tripp runs off to gather some toys, while August heads into the bedroom, seeing his beautiful wife zipping up their suitcase.
“You’re late,” she answers shortly. Standing up, only to smooth her dress down, refusing to look her husband in the eyes. “Carys is asleep, and going to be in a foul mood at dinner all because you are late.”
“Orchid, honey, I’m not here to argue. I’m here to change, so we can leave.”
“This has put us thirty minutes behind. And,” her words get lost in her mouth as August steps up to her and starts kissing on her neck. “Don’t try to butter me up. Carys is going to be in an ill mood because…mmm — because we’ll have to wake her up from her nap,” his kisses always are the best. Scattering kisses all down her chest, before the softest peck is placed on her lips.
“Carys is going to get to spend the night with her aunt Lavender. Tripp as well. And mommy and daddy get to have fun all night long, and not worry about anything,” dipping his hand under her dress he grabs a handful of her breast. “And mommy is going to let daddy ravish her.”
“Auggie…” she starts to pant out, leaning more into him. Eyes glazing over as she slips into a submissive state.
August clears his throat, and steps away quickly, leaving her to huff out in irritation, “Honey, we’re already late.”
“You’re insufferable. The reason you’re late?” August silently walks into their closet, beginning to change into something a bit more casual. Not saying anything, “I see. The family business.”
“Did you know that your father hired a carpenter, finally. He went out to the property today. I hear your sister gave him quite the greeting.”
Orchid steps to the edge of their closet watching her sexy husband change, and all with a blank face, “Daddy’s stupid. You know how Lavender is. And why shouldn’t she be? Babied by all of us, and mostly Daddy. He’s kept her away from everything, and…” Orchid takes a deep calming breath, looking down at her wedding ring, and August catches the gesture. “She has no idea.”
“Did an arranged marriage turn out so bad for you?”
“You are only a few years older than me. Dahlia ran away. Lotus is praying Daddy never takes her away from Nick, and Violet…don’t make me think about that. He’s old. He’s too old for her. She’s twenty-five.”
“And he’s forty-five.”
Orchid chuckles, turning to go back to their bedroom before placing a family photo in his hands, “Are you going to make our daughter marry someone that is twenty years older than her? Keep her hidden away from men so she’s a virgin when she’s married. This is medieval shit, August.”
“Jack paid handsomely. And your sister was no virgin,” Orchid rolls her eyes, starting to walk away, but August grabs onto her wrist, “And no. I would never make Carys marry anyone. I’m not the head of a goddamn mafia family. You know…you know why he does this.”
“We didn’t ask for this, August. We’re just pawns in this fucking game, and we have no say. If…I got lucky. Lotus is trying to play by Daddy’s rule, and all she wants is Nick. One sister runs away so she’s not sold to Jack, so he buys the next one. And what of Lavender? She’s twenty, and…”
“Bart isn’t interested. Chuck on the other hand,” August shrugs, buttoning up his shirt, “Plus, from my understanding another is interested. She could be married in a few years. She’ll finally get what she desires above all else; a man’s admiration. I wouldn’t worry too much about it.”
“Oh?” She cocks up her eyebrow, getting distracted from whimpering cries on the monitor, and August starts to leave the closet. Heading straight towards their daughter’s room. “No, you do not ignore me, August Walker. Why should I not have to worry about Lavender being sold?”
“You make it sound so gross. It’s business. You and your sister agreed to it. It’s not like Lavender can’t get out, just like Dahlia did.”
“Answer me,” she stomps her foot outside of Carys’ bedroom. Brows furrow as she stares up at her husband. “Do not open her door, until you answer me.”
“Our daughter is crying.”
“August?”
“Remember when I told you the less you know the better off you are? You don’t know how to lie, so it’s best if you know nothing. Go get Tripp, and let’s head out to the mansion. I’ll make sure she’s changed, okay?” It wasn’t the answer she wanted, but somehow August always managed to keep her and the babies safe.
“Fine,” she answers, turning to fetch their son. Letting August deal with their toddler.
“Hey, baby.”
“Daddy, I cy,” she stumbles out of her bed, reaching her arms up high for him.
“I know, baby. We’re going to go to the castle tonight.”
“Ooh! Pity dess.”
“Yep, mommy picked out a beautiful dress for you. Let’s change you, and take you to the potty, it’s a long drive, okay? You gonna sleep with Lav Lav tonight?” She gives him a nod, and wiggles out of his arm to go to the bathroom, while August sighs. Things were falling into place, but the only thing that mattered to him were the three people in this apartment. He would pull out immediately to keep them safe. And everyone knew exactly where he stood.
Dahlia takes a long drag of the joint before handing it up to Jax who finishes the roach. Turning to look back at his wife who was staring up at the giant mansion, “We don’t have to go in.”
“Yeah, we do,” she leans up against his back, rubbing her hand over his thigh, “I need to make sure they’re okay. I was supposed to marry Jack.”
Jax hisses through his teeth, laying his hand over her own, “But you didn’t.”
“She did though. She’s a child.”
“And we’re doing what we have to, including her, to make sure the same fate doesn’t fall to Lavender. She’s convinced herself that Jack and Violet are in love,” her hand flips around, and she weaves her fingers in his. Almost ten years of marriage, and Jax was still her best friend. “She lives in a fantasy world to protect herself. It’s easier to believe that her sister is just a princess that was rescued from this tower. Lavender is emotionally stunted. She’s created this reality to save herself.”
“Stop trying to make sense. I hate it here. I hate everything about this place.”
“Yeah, but don’t we get to have fun now. You’re the badass black sheep of the family. Tattoos, piercings, and married to an outlaw. How does it feel to break the system?” Jax was the only thing that saved her. He was worth the risk of running away, and eloping the day she turned eighteen. Her father was unable to keep his promise to Jack. That time.
“I hate him,” Jax, turns back on the bike to look at her again. “Your father and Jack. If given the chance, I want to kill them.”
“You can’t talk like that. Especially not here.”
“I can. I want them both dead. Violet shouldn’t have to be a shell at the age of twenty-five. She’s going through the motions to be a carbon copy of Orchid. This deal was sick. Your father is a piece of shit. Magnus Romano will meet his demise. I just want to pull the trigger,” Jax could almost taste his blood already. He would pay for what he made his daughters do.
“There’s a timing for everything, babe. Come on. Let’s get our quarterly dinner over with. I’m good and high. Now I need a drink,” Dahlia’s eyes narrow as a man walks out the front of the house with a shit eating grin. “Mother fucker,” she grouses, slapping Jax’s leg. “Ari?”
“Well, look at what the cat drug in,” Jax holds out his hand for a shake, but Ari declines. “What gives?”
“I haven’t washed my hands since I’ve been here. It’s a bit nasty and rude. What…what are you two doing here? Didn’t think the jackass Magnus let the likes of you two step foot into his place anymore.”
“Quarterly visits. What were you doing in the house, Ari?” Dahlia slings a leg over the bike, and walks right up to him. “No men allowed.”
“I was invited in.”
“You better leave that one alone. She’s desperate. Ow,” Jax holds onto his chest where Dahlia smacked him. “What? Come on, that girl is. She is so needy living out here all alone. She gets fucking bored.”
“No. Men. Allowed, Ari. Keep your grimy little…ew, haven’t washed your hands you disgusting asshole. Get…get out of here!”
“You coming by my little humble cottage to stay? Maybe we can smoke a little? Chat?” Ari laughs, wiping his beard again, only to get hit by Dahlia. “She’s like a little chihuahua, Teller. I’m only joking,” he pushes her away with one hand when she tries to smack him again. “She’s like a big chihuahua.”
“It’s not safe to talk here,” Jax reminds Ari. “Especially not high.”
“Well, I’m stuck here for the foreseeable future. I’m only allowed to have one person on my crew. But she has been very easy and forthcoming. Easy, tiger. My god, you know how I am,” Dahlia had heard all about Ari’s sexual prowess, and he was working it on her sister now.
“You keep your hands to yourself, Levinson.”
“She’s a big girl. Let her have some fun. Teller, loosen her up a bit. Maybe she needs another good fuck on the bike.”
“Shut up, man. We’ll see you after dinner. We don’t stay here,” Jax nods his head at Ari as he walks towards the garage for his on property car. “Babe, don’t take what that man says to heart.”
“He touched my baby sister.”
“And she needs to be touched. Everybody wins here. Keep your head on right. Go on in. I’ll be in your old room, you visit with Lav. Sounds like she needs some tough love talk from you. Let her have fun, but maybe remind her sex doesn’t equal love. Not in this world.”
——
“No,” Jack answers, putting on his watch as he stares at his wife. “I don’t like that dress. Put on the black one. And we’re not staying at your father’s house. It smells musty there. Nor do I want to be around the likes of Teller,” he looks at himself in the mirror, straightening out his hair before leaning back down to snort up another line of cocaine.
“No bra. I like when you get cold, and your nipples point out,” Violet slowly closes her eyes as she reaches for the black dress that Jack had laid out of her. Looking at her arm to see the tiniest healed mark. Lotus helped keep it a secret. He hadn’t discovered the implant. She didn’t want children with him.
“And put on the Tom Ford perfume. Last time you wore that Dior one, and it gave me a headache. Never wear that again. I left the jewelry I wanted you to wear out as well. I heard Chuck was asking about your sister. How much do you think she’ll cost?”
“I don’t know, dear,” Violet says walking out of the closet. She is the perfect trophy wife. She stands there, looks pretty, listens to everything she says, and lets him fuck her like an animal.
“I asked you not to call me that.”
“Yes, sir,” she responds, her voice devoid of any emotions. “We should probably leave,” he pulls down the top to her black dress, exposing her completely. “Jack.”
“I just wanted to look at you. They’re perky, and pretty. Mmm, if I could I’d make you take my cock in front of your family, so they could see how much I own you. Let’s go,” he says, slapping her ass before pulling her dress back up. “You know, I think I actually liked the navy one better. This jewelry will still work with it. Go ahead, change, but let me watch.”
“Yes, sir,” obedient, but sad. Emotionless and going through the motions. This isn’t at all how she saw married life. Everyday used as a sex doll, and humiliated even when it was the two of them. But Jack had paid a pretty price for her body, so now she is to be the trophy on his arm. The one he got to show off in front of all his friends. And she is but a vessel.
Magnus takes a puff of his cigar as he walks through the door. Hearing a dramatic cough from his oldest daughter, “Daddy, my kids aren’t used to smoking.”
“My house.”
“My kids. Either you put it out, or we leave,” no one ever goes against Magus’ words. No one argues. No one tells him what he will do. Until Orchid had children. He wanted her to marry August, she did. August had taught her a lot of things. Having a backbone was one of the many.
“Thank you,” she says when her dad lays down his cigar. It was a disgusting habit. “Tripp’s birthday is in a few weeks. My baby is going to be four, can you believe it?”
“I’m sure August is ecstatic for having a boy to carry on his name. Some of us were not so lucky. Even though we tried. Tried lots of times. August, my boy,” Magnus leaves her side to shake August’s hand. Ignoring Carys completely, even though she is in his arms.
Flashbacks of the many times her father had ignored her flow through her head. Carys reaches a hand up to August’s mouth, and he kisses over it. Looking down at her quickly before continuing on with the conversation. August would never ignore her. And August was not Magnus. She reminds herself by picking up their son, needing to touch his chubby cheeks.
“Daddy, we should eat,” Violet says out loud, grimacing when her hand is squeezed by her husband. Her eyes look down at the floor, ashamed for speaking up.
“Where is my princess?”
“Oh for fuck’s sake,” Dahlia rolls her eyes, walking into the dining hall. “She’ll make her grand entrance when we sit down. She needs to be seen, and admired. Let’s go,” she takes her seat with Jax, as far away from her father as possible, while the rest of the group follow.
Magnus takes his seat at the head of the table, eyes looking towards the door when his youngest daughter bounces in, “Hey Daddy,” she gives him a kiss before reaching to grab her niece, “Hey, my darling angel. You want to sit with me and Tripp?” Carys nods her head, loving any moment she gets to spend with her aunt.
“Daddy, can I get clearance to go to a museum tomorrow?”
“No, I’ll have Tyler bring you some more art supplies here. Just give him a list of what you need.”
“But Daddy…”
“I said no,” his hand slaps on the table, and Lavender looks down at Carys, trying to fake a grin, but is embarrassed all the same. “I’m glad we’re all here. It was high time we spent some time together. Especially you, Dahlia,” it was best not to engage in his words. Nothing good ever came from it. She bites her tongue, her fingers digging into her husband’s thigh.
“Eat,” he announces again, watching his family start to place food on their plate. Missing how Jack is the one to make the plate for Violet. While all her sisters are making their own plate, she waits for her new husband to put what he deems is the right amount for her to eat.
“Daddy?”
“Not now, princess,” Magnus glares at his youngest daughter, who gives him a quick pout. “What?”
“When do I get to be married? Or date? Or leave the mansion? Or have a boyfriend?” Violet turns to look at her sister with her mouth agape. Lavender had no clue how this worked. She also thought this was a fairytale.
“I just want the big beautiful wedding, and someone to come home to me every night.”
“Princess, you’re too young. Live a little,” she gives him a pout; her signature move with him, and it’s Orchid that clears her throat.
“There’s more to love than just a wedding, Lav. I don’t like this talk at the dinner table. This always ends in an argument, and if that happens my kids and I going to the bedroom. They are hungry. And they will eat. And that is the end of this conversation,” Orchid gives her youngest sister the sweetest smile she can muster. “Marriage is a commitment.”
“Everyone else is married though!” Lotus rolls her eyes, starting to tap her fingers on the table. “Don’t act like you and…”
“Enough!” She shouts at her sister. “Eat your food, and listen to what Orchid says. If you behave, I’ll make sure you are brought canvases, and just remember, I have eyes everywhere. How was your day laying in the sun in your new bikini?”
“It was fine,” Lavender lies. Nick told on her. It wasn’t her fault. She was bored out of her mind and Ari was sexy, and paid attention to her. And he made her feel so good. Eventually he would have sex with her, and then she could marry him. They would see. They would all see.
“It’s always a joy coming here,” Dahlia smarts, kicking her leg over to Lavender. “I’ll come by and see you this summer. Wouldn’t want you to stay all alone,” Magnus lets out a groan. The idea of Dahlia infiltrating his sweet Lavender’s mind was not something he wanted. But he wanted a nice meal even more.
Dinner becomes mostly quiet until Magnus scoots his chair back abruptly, “I have to leave. Lav, I’ll have some art supplies sent to you abruptly. Stay out of trouble. I’ll be back in a month.”
“A month?” Lavender complains when he walks out the door. “While I am here by myself forever and for all eternity.”
“A dramatic little brat that…” Jack’s hand moves to Violet’s leg, and she stops immediately.
“We should be leaving, too.”
“It’s late,” Orchid stands to walk towards her son. Picking him up from his chair, and kissing over his head. “Violet has her own living space here. You can leave in the morning.”
“We’re good tonight. Violet sleeps better in her own bed. I also have an early morning, and I don’t feel like commuting, everyone have a wonderful day. Violet, to the car.”
“Yes, sir,” while she heads towards the door, without hugs from her sister, Jack bows his head towards the Romanos, following behind her.
“I don’t like that prick,” Jax grunts. “What happened to her personality?”
“She’s in love, and married,” Lavender tries to argue.
“You are a child. That is not love. That is control.”
“Yep, that’s my cue. August, get Carys, we’re going to bed,” Orchid heads on up to her room, with August and both kids, while Lavender glares at Jax.
“I’m sorry to burst your fantasy bubble, but that’s not happiness. That’s not a fairytale. If you don’t see that, then you never knew your sister. He was supposed to marry Dahlia. What did she do? She ran away and married me. Everyone else will coddle you, but not me. The reality is, if you’re on this path, you’re next to be married.”
“Good.”
“Good?” Jax snorts, standing up. There was no talking to her. “Remind me of how good that is when you don’t get to decide who you have sex with. When you’re told who you will marry and who you will have children with. Tell me it’s good when you’re laying on your back, getting pumped full of cum from saggy wrinkly balls. That is your future.”
“Jax, that’s enough,” Lotus’ pinches the bridge of her nose. While she agrees that Lavender needed a reality check, she was in the perfect position to get everyone what they wanted.
“No! She needs to understand that this isn’t some fucking game. Well, it is this big chess game. You just need to realize what the queen is. Live in your fantasy world in this big castle in the middle of nowhere. But don’t expect the rest of us to. Orchid and August were a one in a million thing. Lotus isn’t allowed to get married because she’s too valuable to the family. Because what you saw tonight, that’s your future. A woman with no voice and no agency. I’m going to bed. Dahlia? You staying or leaving with me, babe?”
“Leaving. Lavender, open your eyes, sweetheart. Jax would never lie to you. Neither would I. Ask Lotus. We’re pawns. We’re not queens. Goodnight, baby girl.”
Lavender sighs as she leans back in her chair. Arms crossing over her chest as she looks at Lotus, “You going to tell me how stupid I am?”
“Stupid for letting a stranger see you naked. Stupid for letting the stranger in the house. Know what game you want to play before you decide to jump in and hope for the best outcome. Sissy, you’re playing a game that you don’t understand.”
“I shouldn’t trust, Ari?” Lotus sees just how young her sister is. Even for a twenty year old. She had no life experience. Was kept locked away from any normalcy, and was stunted because of it. “I liked him.”
“Just be careful with who you invite in.”
“You’re not telling me I shouldn’t trust him though.”
“Now you’re getting it. Go to bed. I won’t see you tomorrow, because I’ll have to leave early to get into work,” she walks over to her sister, giving her sister a kiss on her head. Turning to walk to her bedroom. She had given Lavender enough for this evening. Give her something to ponder while she lays awake at night, and hopefully get her head out of the clouds.
“Lo?” Lotus turns back to look at her baby sister, wishing that life could be a bit different. “Do you love Nick?”
“You shouldn’t mix business with pleasure.”
“That’s not what I asked. So do you?” a blind person could see that she and Nick were too close for business partners. But Lotus would deny it until the bitter end. “Do you love him?”
“Yes.”
“And you won’t marry him?” Lotus shakes her head no, “Violet isn’t the only one that listens to Daddy.”
“Go to sleep, princess. Learn to have your voice that isn’t controlled by a man. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”

Die With A Smile
Chapter 1: I Could Be A Good Avatar, If I Could Get Out Of This Place
(Pairing: Korra x Asami)
(EQUALIST ASAMI AU IS FINALLY HERE!!!! I combined this with a slightly revamped version of my corrupt White Lotus concept. Also just me in general doing a whole ass LOK rewrite because why not? Asami and Korra’s antics WILL be ridiculous up in here. Prepare yourselves for a LONG fic. Feedback and comments are always welcome! The ao3 link is posted right before this!)
“Oh yeah! Hit him where it hurts, Korra!” Delak yelled as Korra managed to bend fire right at her opponent’s chest with her fist.
“FLAY THAT SUCKER! ARE YOU OLD CRONES SEEING THIS?!?! THAT’S MY GIRL KICKING ASS OUT THERE!” Kyuka hollered.
Korra bit back a laugh as Rakin scolded them for her best friends’ vulgar cheering tactics. She was very quickly snapped back to reality when her opponent threw fire at her face. Thankfully, Korra managed to dodge in the flames in the nick of time. Better actually pay attention to the fight now.
In her defense, the fight is basically over. Her opponent was breathing heavily, there was a slight shaking in his legs, and his movements were much more erratic and much less precise. After one well timed kick, Korra had won the battle.
"Haha! Yes! Finally!" Korra excitedly cheered.
Then she took a quick glance at the unamused faces of the White Lotus members and quickly straightened out.
"I mean, thank you all for believing in me," Korra said respectfully while bowing.
Kyuka dragged Delak by the arm and rushed down from the bleachers to meet Korra. Almost immediately crushed in a bear hug by her two best friends.
Also, her only friends, but the point still stands.
"Don't get ahead of yourself Korra. We haven't decided if you've actually completed your firebending training yet," Rakin warned her.
Korra took in a deep breath in an attempt to not totally flip her lid. These old crones have been putting off her completion of firebending for weeks. Every time they claim something will be the final test, they say something along the lines of 'oh, just kidding, you will be training even longer'! It's driving her insane! Just let her airbend already, damn it!
"You can't be serious, you've been saying that for ages! I mean how much is enough-" Kyuka glared before Delak nudged her harshly.
While Korra did appreciate Kyuka riding for her so passionately, it really wouldn't do much to help her case.
"Look, the reality of it is that Korra may be excelling in the physical aspects of being the Avatar, but she's completely ignored the spiritual side," Rakin glared.
"Well, yes, airbending is when I learn about spirituality. When I start my airbending training, I will actually have the opportunity to get into the whole spirit situation," Korra deadpanned.
There's no way she had to actually spell it out for these old guys. Sometimes it seems like they purposefully drag out her training. Ugh, but that doesn't even make any sense. They'd have no purpose for doing that.
She just needs to remind herself that this is what Avatar Aang wanted. Who knows more about being the Avatar than the one right before her?
"Korra's ready. If anyone can teach her about the spirits, it's Tenzin," Katara smiled.
The four White Lotus members did not seem to appreciate that statement. If Korra wasn't a super composed and mature adult, she would be jumping with joy right now.
Okay, fine, she's bouncing on the balls of her feet just a little.
"Maybe we should discuss this further," Rakin started before thankfully getting cut off by Katara.
"There's no need. Kyuka does have a point, you've been holding out on the poor girl for weeks. Korra's completed every task you've thrown at her with grace and precision. She's earned her title of firebending master," Katara nodded.
Korra smiled excitedly at her mentor's words. No one can argue with Katara.
"Well, I suppose that's that. We will collaborate with Master Tenzin in order to begin her airbending training," Tala relented.
Did any of the White Lotus members look particularly happy about Katara's verdict? No. Did Korra have the decency to care now that she's finally a firebending master? Also no.
"Yes! Finally! Oh, we have got to celebrate! Dinner's on me tonight!" Kyuka exclaimed while linking arms with Korra and Delak.
"You know the rules," Rakin told the trio with narrowed eyes.
"Yes, Korra will be back before sundown. I can assure you no harm will fall upon the Avatar while she's with us," Delak sighed.
"Kids these days," Rakin sighed as his way of letting them go.
Before Kyuka could yank Korra away, the Avatar rushed up to lightly hug Katara. The older woman laughed before hugging back.
"No need to thank me. Go have fun with your friends," Katara grinned once Korra pulled away.
Korra beamed at her waterbending master before hurrying over to where Kyuka and Delak stood. They'd need to get out of here as fast as possible if she wants to make the most of this day. After all, the Avatar has a curfew.
********************
Korra is so past curfew right now. She blames her stupid friends.
Thankfully, by the time the Avatar returned to the compound, the White Lotus weren't waiting for her like the stalkers they are. Instead, the man in charge of opening and closing the gate merely gave her a scolding look before letting her back inside.
Once the Avatar awkwardly started shuffling back into the compound, she heard several voices speak in the conference room and none of them sounded pleased. When she glanced into the window, she saw the White Lotus speaking to Tenzin and some woman Korra's never met before.
Now Korra's mind is racing a mile a minute. How in spirit's name did Tenzin get here so quickly? And why was he by himself? He usually brought his wife and kids when he visits the Southern Water Tribe. Did he know that Korra's training would soon come to an end? Is it a mere coincidence? Just what is going on here?
Well, Korra should probably just quietly get to her room, she was sure she would have been called if she was needed.
"-and that is why we seriously need the Avatar's help," the unknown woman stated.
Korra's jaw dropped at the admission. She thought about what to do next for a moment before simply deciding the best course of action was to eavesdrop. Hey, she's not a perfect person.
"I appreciate the, complexities, of your situation, but I must decline your request of bringing out the Avatar," Rakin firmly stated.
Both Tenzin and the unknown woman seemed shocked by the response. The unknown woman grit her teeth and curled her hand into a fist. In her defense, the way she looks is exactly how Korra feels whenever she has to talk to Rakin.
"I am the chief of police in Republic City. I was raised by Toph Beifong. If you could not tell by those two facts alone, I am not a woman who is willing to ask for help. But my city needs their Avatar," the Beifong woman insisted.
"Please, Rakin, the situation is only getting worse by the day. Besides, Korra needs to go to Republic City to learn airbending anyways," Tenzin added.
"Korra should not be dealing with such a major crisis until she is a fully realized Avatar. You need to find another way to solve this issue," Rakin trold them.
"My father was twelve years old when he ended the Hundred Year War, surely Korra-," Tenzin began.
The airbending master was very quickly cut off by Rakin slamming his fist down on the table. It surprised Korra greatly. In all her years of knowing him, he never once broke his cool exterior.
"No, the Avatar must stay here. Her airbending training will be postponed until this little incident is taken care of," Rakin spat.
"Lin, we did what we could, but their decision is final," Tenzin told the scowling woman.
Despite Tenzin admitting defeat, even he didn't seem to love Rakin's decision. He looked irritated, but he's significantly more composed than the chief.
"I don't really see the point in having an Avatar if she can't actually leave her home!" the woman Korra could now identify as Lin huffed.
"Korra's just barely turned eighteen, give her some time. I can assure you-" Rakin began, but Lin was already leaving.
Korra yelped and immediately started running, knowing she'd certainly get caught if someone walked through those doors. Korra did not slow down until she was safely tucked away in her room.
The Avatar's brain was going a mile a minute. There are dozens of questions going through her mind, but only two seemed to really matter. What is going on in Republic City? And why exactly is Rakin so against Korra doing her literal job by helping them?
Something told Korra she wouldn't get any answers from Rakin. Tenzin and Lin didn't seem to be in the mood to talk either. There's only one person Korra can think of that would be able to help her in these trying Avatar times.
After very quickly escaping the White Lotus compound, Korra used her waterbending to get to Katara's door home at lightning speed. The Avatar didn't even need to knock before her waterbending master opened the door.
"I was wondering when you would make your great escape," Katara grinned.
"Katara, I need some serious old lady wisdom right now," Korra admitted.
"I'll make tea. Talk to me," Katara told her.
Once Korra explained to Katara the whole situation, the older woman looked troubled. That is not a good sign. When she mentioned the Lin Beifong woman, Katara's jaw dropped.
"I'm sorry, did you just say that Lin Beifong came to the Southern Water Tribe to ask for the Avatar's assistance?" Katara asked.
"Yes, that's correct," Korra confirmed.
"Oh, you need to leave immediately," Katara confirmed.
"Is it really that bad?" Korra grimaced.
"If Lin 'I'll stitch my own stab wound with no healer' Beifong is asking for help, then she really needs help," Katara nodded.
Korra's entire body slumped in pure relief at Katara's approval. This woman is her idol. Korra wants to make her proud so badly the pressure of it all almost consumes her.
"I'm glad I at least have you on my side. I want to be the kind of Avatar people want to come to for help. I want to make sure the era of peace Aang brought to this world stays intact," Korra insisted.
Katara gave Korra a soft smile. She took Korra's hands into her own and squeezed them tight.
"Aang's era is over. My brother and many of my friends are gone. It's time for you and your generation to take on maintaining balance in this crazy world. There is no doubt in my mind that you will be an excellent Avatar, Korra," Katara smiled.
The younger woman quickly drew her into a hug, partly to hide her tears. She's really doing this. Korra is really going to go to Republic City.
...wait a damn minute.
"Katara, super quick question for you. How does one, ehem, get to Republic City at such an hour?"
********************
Once Korra called Delak and Kyuka from Katara's house to explain the situation, she decided she had to stop at her parents place in person before she left. Though they were reluctant to let her go, their worries eased significantly when they learned Katara signed off on it.
"Really? You're going to let me go? Just like that?" Korra asked hopefully.
"We always knew you'd have to go to Republic City eventually. We also knew that it would be a good chance we couldn't come with you," Senna told her.
"Not only are you the Avatar, but you're also an adult. I'm glad that you're taking charge of your own life," her father kindly stated.
At once, Korra swelled up with emotion. For the first time in her life, she was going to go off and learn to bend a new element without her parents by her side.
The Avatar quickly squeezed her parents into a tight hug. She felt two pairs of arms wrap around her. She stood there to simply bask in the presence of her parents for a moment. Oh, she is going to miss them terribly.
"Uh, before I forget, could I, oh gee I don't know, have some money?" Korra asked hopefully.
Tonraq sighed a very tired, fatherly sigh. He then looked rather dramatically off into the distance.
"The day I've been dreading for the past eighteen years has finally come. My daughter is going to run my wallet dry. How I mourn you, gold coins," Tonraq said, feigning sadness.
"Oh for spirits sake, you'll be fine old man. Give me a moment Korra, I'll get you some money," Senna told her. Korra's mother then quickly left the room to find the satchel with the coins.
"I don't know why you're looking so sad, Pops, no one has ever once said that having a daughter is cheap," Korra smirked.
"Let a man grieve in peace, Korra," Tonraq immediately countered.
Korra's eyes rolled so far back into her head that she's pretty sure she could see her own brain. Senna then walked back into the room with a full coin purse. The Avatar made her final goodbyes with her parents and then she was ushering Naga to start running at the speed of light.
From what Katara said, Beifong tends to travel by boat and there should only be one docked right now. Korra is hoping and praying that the chief is still there. It'd really suck if her sudden rebellion was all for nothing.
The spirits must be on her side because Korra saw the chief's silhouette walking up to the boat.
"Hey! Chief Beifong! Wait up!" Korra yelled.
The chief paused and turned around with a raised eyebrow. Yikes, this woman is incredibly intimidating.
"So sorry to bother you, it's just that I'm the Avatar and word on the street is that you need my help," Korra said.
The chief looked Korra up and down, then crossed her arms. She did not seem amused.
"Given the fact that I literally just spoke to the White Lotus and they told me they wouldn't be sending the Avatar out, I find your claim a little hard to believe," the woman scowled.
Ah, that explains the odd look she gave Korra. Well, this is an easily solvable situation.
Korra waterbent a sphere right above her left hand. Then, she tilted her head back and breathed fire from her mouth.
Lin Beifong's eyes widened a bit and her lips ever so slightly parted in shock. Korra assumes this is the most extreme emotion she'll get from this woman.
"I can assure you I'm no fake," Korra smiled.
"How on Earth did you manage to get out here then? The White Lotus seemed very set on not letting you off your leash," Beifong asked once she recovered from the unexpected surprise.
"Yeah, I actually talked to them! They, uh, had a change of heart," Korra ever so slightly lied.
Lin narrowed her eyes at Korra's words. If she found Korra's words to be suspicious, she ultimately didn't comment.
"In that case, let's get a move on. If we don't get on that boat right now, we don't leave the Southern Water Tribe," Lin said.
Korra nodded and quickly followed behind Lin to board the boat. They were quickly ushered onto the ship and shown to the room they'd be staying.
"So, what is the situation with Republic City that needs an Avatar's help?" Korra decided to ask once they got settled.
"I'll give you a more detailed run down when we get to the station. It's easier to absorb certain information with all the documents right in front of you. The condensed version of the issue is that there's an up and coming movement for nonbenders. They call themselves Equalists. They're a bunch of nonbenders that are pissed off over being treated unfairly in comparison to benders," Lin explained.
"I mean, that doesn't sound so bad. If there's really an issue of nonbenders getting the short end of the stick, shouldn't it get addressed?" Korra questioned.
"The issue isn't so much the Equalist cause itself, more of who's the face of it. His name's Amon and he's an extremist psychopath. Unfortunately, the desperation of nonbenders is so bad that they don't particularly care about how Amon goes about spreading equality, they just want results," Lin told her.
"So he's making benders out to be the enemy?" Korra guessed.
"Correct. He's twisting a movement that could be used to inspire actual change and is instead making it a hate campaign against benders. It's been getting rapidly worse these past few months," Lin confirmed.
Korra cringed at the concept of benders and nonbenders turning on each other. Kind of makes her wonder who would even win. Sure, benders had some pretty crazy power since they manipulate an element, but there's much more nonbenders out in the world. Plus, with all the new machines in this day and age, Korra imagines it'd be a pretty fair fight.
Seriously, why is she even thinking about this? The whole point of her presence is to stop the Equalist issue from getting to that point.
"Well, this is certainly one way to start off my thrilling Avatar career," Korra sighed.
Okay, nonbenders are naturally upset that they are treated lesser than in comparison to benders. Nonbenders follow Amon despite his radical views because he actually causes change. Korra needs to step in and find a middle ground so that everyone goes home happy.
Now how the fuck is she gonna do that?
"Out of morbid curiosity, how did you manage to convince the White Lotus to let you run off to Republic City? I've spent months trying to convince them to get you there," Beifong inquired, effectively snapping the Avatar out of her thoughts.
Korra kind of forgot about the fact that she's basically a runaway right now. Oopsie daisy.
"So, uh, you're going to laugh when I tell you this," Korra nervously started.
"Oh, what the flameo did you do?" Beifong glared.
Spirits, this woman is terrifying when she glares.
"So the White Lotus don't actually, how do you say, know that I left," Korra weakly told her.
Lin stared at Korra for five seconds straight. Then, she took in a deep breath.
"Are you telling me that I just, for all intents and purposes, kidnapped the fucking Avatar?" Lin eerily asked her.
"No I am not! I turned eighteen last week, so I'm an adult leaving a place on my own volition! Plus, it's not like they're going to think I just vanished! I told my parents and Katara I was leaving! They'll be the ones to let the White Lotus know what's going on tomorrow," Korra frantically told her.
Chief Beifong took in a deep breath while she rubbed her eyes. She seemed to be thinking for a moment before she let out a long, drawn out sigh.
“You know what? I don’t think I care about those old hags anymore. Your parents will deal with the aftermath. No one would bother going against Katara's judgment. The White Lotus completely fell apart when Iroh died anyways,” Lin huffed.
Korra pursed her lips at the comment but ignored it. The White Lotus has been getting a lot of jabs lately. Sure, they're stuck up jerks and sometimes their methods make absolutely zero sense, but that doesn't make them terrible people or anything.
"Wait, do you happen to know where I'll be staying when we actually get there? I kind of forgot about sleeping arrangements. I was in a bit of a rush to meet you," Korra said in an attempt to change the subject.
Also, she really does need a place to stay.
"You'll be bunking with Tenzin and his family. You need to stay there to learn airbending anyways, it was always the plan from what I've heard," Lin stated.
"I figured as much. Never hurts to check," Korra said.
Once those words left her mouth, Naga decided this was the perfect time for the all powerful Avatar to become a chair. Naga proceeded to lay her entire body on Korra. Helpless to stop this obvious attack, all Korra could do was accept her fate as she was smothered in fur.
"You alive down there Avatar? I can't have you suffocating until after you've fixed my city's problems," Lin said.
For the first time since Korra's seen her, the chief of police actually sounds amused. So suffering is what makes Lin Beifong have a light laugh.
Honestly? It checks out.
"Yeah, I'm good. It would appear Naga thinks she's still a puppy," Korra managed to get out.
"Get comfortable inhaling all that polar bear dog fur, it'll be a while before we get to Republic City," Lin said in such a way that it was obvious she's smirking right now.
Naga must be encouraged by Lin's words because she put even more of her weight on Korra. That's just perfect. It looks like Korra's first time in Republic City she'd be sporting a couple of cracked ribs.
No one ever said being the Avatar would be easy.
********************
Korra may have once been Avatar Aang about eighteen years ago, but she does not have her previous life's patience. She was practically jumping off the walls by the time they docked at Republic City at midday.
"It's about damn time. If you asked my one more question about Republic City, I was going to throw you overboard," Beifong scowled.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize it was a crime to be curious about my home for the foreseeable future," Korra pouted.
"I should make it one. Tenzin's going to be in a council meeting that'll last pretty much all day. I'll call him when he gets out. I've got to make up for the time I missed at work so I'll be unreachable for at least the next couple days. Feel free to roam the city. Be back here at sundown, Tenzin should be here by then. Don't do stupid shit. I swear if you get into trouble," Beifong warned.
"What? Trouble? Me? I'm the pinnacle of good behavior," Korra indignantly stated.
"Somehow I don't buy it. We'll discuss the Equalist issue at a later time, I need to get back to the station. Again, do not do anything stupid," Lin sternly told her while walking away.
"Pinnacle of good behavior! That's what I am!" Korra yelled after.
Either Beifong didn't hear the Avatar or she simply did not care. It doesn't really matter because now, Korra is standing alone in front of a major city she's never been to.
Well, Korra has approximately four hours until she has to be back at the port. While she contemplated what to do, her stomach decided to give her an answer by loudly growling. She's pretty confident in the fact Naga is probably hungry now too. Okay, food it is.
As began her journey through this gigantic city, Korra's eyes were like crazy to see as much as possible. All the buildings she could see were miles tall. Cars were streaming right past her, people were bustling around trying to get to their destination, and there was some type of loud sound coming from every which way.
To put it bluntly, Republic City is a tad overwhelming.
As Korra continued her very scenic view of the city, a loud feminine voice caught her attention. She glanced over her shoulder to look at the source of the volume only to see a swarm of people crowding a girl on a stage. The megaphone the girl held accounted for the shockingly loud voice. It would appear the Avatar accidentally walked right into one of those Equalist rallies the chief talked about. Korra considered her options for a moment before deciding to get in closer. She may as well scope the scenery out.
Besides, as an Avatar, it would be in her best interest to understand both sides of the issue. She has a pretty solid idea what the benders think of the whole Equalist movement, so maybe this speaker will give Korra some perspective on the nonbender side. Despite the hunger ever brewing in Korra's stomach, she walked to the rally.
The closer Korra got to the Equalist rally, the prettier the speaker on stage began to look. Once the Korra made it to the edge of the Equalist gathering, she decided this speaker might just be the most beautiful woman she's ever seen.
She had long, flowing black hair that went right down to her waist. Her hair was secured in a top knot above her head as an ode to her Fire Nation heritage. The gold band and pin in her hair looked very elegant on her. Her purple eyeshadow made her bright green eyes stand out in the most wonderful way possible. Even her voice is soothing to listen to, even if it's amped up the megaphone.
Due to the fact that Korra is a very disastrous bisexual, she had a hard time focusing on the speaker's words due to how gorgeous she is. Because of course the first person Korra acknowledges as super attractive in this city happens to be an Equalist. Ugh, whatever, it's not like Korra ever needs to do more than listen to her.
Thankfully, Korra started to really pay attention to the woman's words and can honestly see where the Equalist movement is coming from. The Avatar honestly wanted to hear more, but Naga began nudging her shoulder. Her poor girl was probably starving.
Naturally, Naga ended up attracting a bit of attention as a polar bear dog in a place where they are not typically seen. A few people were glancing over their shoulder and began wearily eyeing Korra's massive companion. The Equalist speaker just so happened to be one of the people that became interested in Naga's appearance.
Yikes, it is so time for Korra to get up out of here. She ended up making eye contact with the speaker. Korra, unsure of what to do, simply smiled at the woman before guiding Naga away from the rally. This dog needed to eat, and fast.
Korra made it down to the end of the block before she realized she did not, in fact, know where she was going. It probably would've been smart to ask Beifong for a map. Or at least ask for the directions to get one. Oh boy.
"You alright? You look a little bit lost," a very pretty voice asked her.
Korra turned to see the woman who was talking to her was the speaker at the Equalist rally. This is certainly an unexpected development. Deciding to ignore the fact that this girl is even more stunning up close, Korra told her the truth.
"It's my first time in the city and I have zero clue where I'm going. I can't even find a map," the Avatar unfortunately admitted.
Equalist girl laughed at her very honest response, and Korra felt a little bit proud she got this girl to laugh. Only a little bit though. She has to maintain a small amount of self respect, after all.
"Oh, you poor thing. It's not easy to navigate this city by yourself, especially without any prior knowledge. Where are you trying to go? I was born and raised here, I'm sure I could help," the woman smiled.
It's genuinely embarrassing how Korra's stomach flipped at the 'poor thing' comment. Yeah, she needs to get her shit together if she has any hope of being a competent Avatar.
"I just need to find a decent place to eat. Preferably a place with a lot of raw meat. My polar bear dog has a big appetite," Korra explained.
"What a coincidence, I was on my way to get lunch too! There's a bunch of little vendors with the best food down the street. You can just follow my lead if you like," the woman offered.
This is genuinely incredibly convenient. Maybe the spirits are on Korra's side today.
"Thank you, I really appreciate the help," Korra sighed in relief.
"No problem. My name's Asami. And what is the name of the girl I'm dragging around Republic City?" the taller woman asked.
Damn it, her name is as pretty as she is.
"It's nice to meet you. I'm Korra. And this polar bear dog who I swear is friendly, is Naga. I understand the teeth can be a bit intimidating, but she's a total sweetheart," the Avatar replied.
"Naga is pretty cute. Just like her owner," Asami casually stated.
What. Like. What. Who. How. What.
"So, uh, what kind of food do these vendors serve?" Korra asked in what she hoped was a normal way.
Maybe Korra just imagined the compliment. Yeah, that's probably it. She's hungry, auditory hallucinations are perfectly plausible. Right?
"Oh they've got pretty much everything down there. My personal favorite are these dumplings specifically from one of the Earth Kingdom vendors. I swear they're magic," Asami told her.
"Dumplings do sound pretty good right about now," Korra noted.
Thankfully for her, she did not need to wait much longer. Her nose was hit with some of the most delightful smells she has ever experienced. Asami must have sensed her very strong desire to eat because she led Korra directly to the vendor with the most amazing looking dumplings on this planet.
"Miss Sato! Back for me I see!" the man cheerily exclaimed upon seeing Asami.
"Of course, your food is simply too delicious. We'll take two of the number five, please," Asami smiled.
"Coming right up!" the man happily agreed.
In a split second, there was two bowls of dumplings right in front of them. It only processed in Korra's mind that Asami was paying for her food when she handed one of her bowls to Korra. Oh spirits, did she think Korra is like, broke and homeless or something? That would be so embarrassing.
"Oh, I can pay, I have money on me," the Avatar insisted.
"Don't worry about it, it's my treat. Think of it as a welcome to Republic City," the very pretty woman smiled.
"That's very generous of you, thank you," Korra said.
"Of course. What does Naga eat? I'm sure she's jealous we've already got lunch," Asami asked.
Korra, who is currently very flustered, practically jumped at the chance to keep moving to distract herself. Asami paid yet again for Naga's meal even when Korra fully pulled out her coins, so that was another nice gesture. The two girls, three if you count Naga, sat down on a bench near the vendors and dug in.
"Sweet spirits you were not kidding about these dumplings. I think my life has been changed forever," Korra muttered in awe after just one bite.
"I told you I know what I'm talking about. Say, while I've got you here, what did you think of the rally I put on? I like getting opinions from the crowd. Strike a chord? Make you feel all hyped up? I'm also more than open to constructive criticism," Asami questioned.
Now this is something Korra was unsure of how to answer. Given that she doesn't know a lot about the Equalist issue yet, she would like more information before she can give any form of criticism, that's for sure. It's best to keep it broad for now.
"I didn't get to listen to much of it, but from what little I gathered it seemed to go really well. You're an eloquent public speaker and you certainly looked like you knew what you were talking about. Although, I don’t think I qualify as your target audience," Korra admitted.
The woman's brows furrowed in confusion for a moment before a certain realization came across her face.
"Would it happen to be because you're a bender?" Asami with a small grin.
Given the fact that she's not detecting any major hostility from the woman in front of her, Korra sheepishly nodded her head yes.
"I realize my opinions are rather controversial, but I believe the Equalist message is for everyone. We need benders to realize that it is unfair nonbenders get treated the way we do, especially since so many benders are in positions of power that can actually make change," Asami explained.
"That is a very good point," Korra agreed.
Well, it looks like this particular Equalist doesn't align with the extremist agenda, which is something.
"Would it be correct of me to assume you're a waterbender?" Asami asked.
That feels like a bit of an abrupt change in topic, but alright then. Even though this girl is perfectly receptive to the fact that Korra's a bender, she's not eager to find out about Asami's reaction to learning Korra's the Avatar.
"Yeah, I'm a waterbender," is all Korra decides to say.
"Makes sense. Your eyes are the most beautiful shade of blue I've ever seen. They remind me of the lake near my house," Asami smiled.
Korra's cheeks immediately burned at the compliment. The Avatar is not used to...whatever in spirits name is going on right now. In Korra's defense, the White Lotus did not prepare her for this kind of situation.
"Thank you. You have very pretty eyes too," Korra said before hastily taking another bite of her dumpling.
She is way too bisexual for this shit. Korra just needs to calm the fuck down. This Asami chick probably just has a bit of a flirty personality. It's not uncommon for girls to be naturally kind like this.
"You're very sweet, just like that smile of yours. It's infectious really. Your smile is so pretty I couldn't help but smile back up on stage," Asami giggled while resting her chin on her right hand.
This is fine. Asami is just a very nice girl. This is fine. Korra is going to ignore how red her face definitely is right now. This is fine.
"Hmm, you don't say? So what other food places do you recommend? Clearly I can trust your tastes," Korra said in an awkward attempt to change the topic.
Thankfully for her, Asami seemed to let it happen.
"I know a really nice restaurant a few blocks north of here. A bunch of Water Tribe cuisine there that I'm sure you and Naga would love," Asami told her.
Just when Korra was about to ask the name of said restaurant, she heard a pained cry that sounded awfully human. She frowned and stood up to see what the issue was. It was a bit difficult to see with the vendors blocking her sight of the street, but she managed to see who let out that cry.
Some poor older man looked absolutely terrified of the three other men surrounding him. It could very well be nothing, but that older man looks like death is knocking on his door. It's best to swing by to be safe.
"Hey, I've got to head out, places to go, people to see, all that. It was nice meeting you!" Korra said over her shoulder.
Beckoning Naga forward, Korra lightly jogged over to the block where the poor old man is. The situation did not look any better up close.
"Ah, Mr. Chen! My good man. Tell me, do you have this month's rent? I hope the answer's yes! If not, then I may be unable to protect this fine establishment," one of the three men said with feigned kindness.
A rather scary looking man with a scar on his face used firebending to light up his palm. Sweet spirits, they wanted to burn that man's place to the ground.
"Please, business has been slow, I do not have any money right now," Mr. Chen begged.
Korra paused for a moment, unsure of how to approach the situation. She could fight the guys and claim it to be self defense. But then again, Lin did say not to get into trouble. Something tells Korra that the literal chief of police is not someone to cross. Maybe she can help in a more discreet way other than an outright brawl.
The Avatar looked around to see if anyone was watching before she used her earthbending to encase those three jackasses in earth. The earth's encasements went up to their chin so they can't bend anymore. Suckers.
Mr. Chen, knowing a good thing when he sees it, hightails out of there with his merchandise still intact.
The three men were yelling and screaming about how someone was going to pay for this, blah blah blah. They couldn't even see Korra was the one who did it, the damn morons.
The Avatar then went into the nearest shop and in the most polite voice, said the words, "do you mind if I use your phone? I need to call the police."
********************
Korra is beat. After she made sure those trio of jerks got taken away in cuffs, she simply roamed around the city until the sun began to set. Now she's just sitting on the docs and is considering the day's events.
Republic City is...well...a lot. That is to be expected, of course, but it's certainly different experiencing the city firsthand than just anticipating how it really is. Equalist rallies, overly kind women, run in with a bunch of stupid benders that though they were above the law, all around a pretty exciting day.
Korra's contemplations were cut short when she saw Tenzin and his kids approach them. She hastily stood up in order to greet them. Yikes, he did not look happy. The kids, on the other hand, seemed utterly ecstatic to see her. Hopefully Korra can work with that.
"KORRA!" the three airbending kids exclaimed as they launched themselves onto her.
Jinora was clinging to her back, Ikki was placed comfortably on her left side while Meelo was on her right. Man, she missed these kids.
"Korra I learned this super cool new airbending trick! Check it out!" Meelo exclaimed.
"It's been forever since we've seen you! Are you really going to live with us? Are you finally going to learn airbending? How will you-," Ikki rambled.
It was never boring with Ikki and Meelo around, that's for sure.
"Please tell me you're staying, these people are driving me insane!" Jinora hopelessly whispered into her air.
Korra laughed at Jinora's desperation. The Avatar can see how it might be a tad exhausting being constantly surrounded by two people much younger than you as your only form of social life.
"So are we going to talk about why you, the Avatar, decided to frolic to Republic City without telling the White Lotus? You know, the people that my father decided would take on the responsibility of your care?" Tenzin glared.
At once, the three children released their grip on Korra and floated right back on the ground. They knew that Korra is in some serious trouble. A small, weak part of her wanted to purposefully hide behind Tenzin's kids in hopes their father will loosen up.
"Do I acknowledge the fact that maybe running away from home was not the best plan of action? Yes, yes I do. But I would like to remind you that Avatar Aang ran away from home and what do you know! He stopped the Hundred Year War! Yay running away from home!" Korra cheered.
"Must you bring my father into this?" Tenzin sighed.
"If that's what it takes to convince you to let me stay, then yes," Korra nodded.
"The White Lotus are not pleased," Tenzin warned.
"I can deal with Rakin and his hissy fits. I'm not worried about him. What I am worried about is the state that Republic City is in. I can't just turn my back on people who need me," Korra confidently told him.
Tenzin let out a very long, very tired sigh. Then, he turned around and started walking to his air bison.
"Come along then, Pema should be finished with dinner. The White Lotus will be expecting a call from you before you go to sleep," Tenzin informed her.
Korra's relief of being able to stay was nothing compared to the excitement of Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo. The Avatar simply smiled and nodded as the children kept rambling on about all the fun stuff they can do together while she's on the island. At least some people are happy to see her in Republic City.
Once they got to Air Temple Island, Korra practically inhaled her dinner. Pema knows how to cook, that's for damn sure. Korrra figures that she may as well call Rakin now that she's eaten. No point in prolonging her own torture.
Admittedly, Korra is not listening to Rakin scolding her. She's tired, alright?
"-do not think for one second this action will not have consequences, young lady! You must remember your duty as the Avatar," Rakin snapped.
"I know who I am. I plan to live and die for the Four Nations, just as you've been telling me for years. I may as well have those words etched on my skin with how many times I've said it," Korra huffed with a roll of her eyes.
"You exhaust me," Rakin simply stated.
"Walking fifteen steps exhausts you, old man. On that note, I gotta hit the hay. Later hater!" Korra smiled.
Despite Rakin's yelling over the phone, she still hung up on him. It's really funny making him mad. Now Korra's going to call people that don't give her a migraine. Most of the time.
It only took one ring for Kyuka to answer her call. To Korra's convenience, Delak was already with her. Upon Kyuka's request, Korra told them every detail she could think of about her brief time in Republic City.
"Spirits Korra, that's an insane first day," Delak muttered on the other end of the line.
"You're telling me," Korra sighed as she tugged the phone cord.
"So. The Equalist girl was hot," Kyuka said into the phone.
"Seriously? I have a run in with a trio of bending freaks and you focus on the fact that I chatted with some girl?" Korra scoffed.
"You literally just said she was hot, she kept complimenting you, and she paid for your food. She's totally into you. Besides, this is the definition of a forbidden love story! On opposite sides of the same war, will love prevail?! Stay tuned to find out more!" the waterbender teased.
"Delak, do not let her watch anmore drama plays while I'm gone. She's confusing fantasy with reality," Korra snorted.
"Duly noted," Delak chuckled.
"You two are no fun, I swear! Is it so wrong to want Korra to have a thrilling star crossed romance? My life is so boring with just Delak for company, I need to live vicariously through you!" Kyuka whined. Both girls very pointedly ignored Delak's indignant 'hey!'.
"Uka, I love you, I really do, but I beg of you to be realistic. Asami's just a random woman I met and had a small conversation with. I know nothing about her but her name. Believe it or not, Republic City is huge. I genuinely don't think I'm ever going to see her again," Korra scoffed.
"You wanna bet on it?" Kyuka asked with a mischievous tone in her voice.
Korra genuinely had to laugh at her friend's words. Did Kyuka really think that Korra was just going to bump into the same woman twice in a place packed with tens of thousands of people?
"Can I get in on this too? To be so clear, I'm on Korra's side," Delak chimed in.
That was in his best interest. Korra can not remember the last time Kyuka has won one of their friendly wagers.
"Deal. Okay, mom's birthday is in six months, so I'll definitely be coming back home for that. Delak and I bet you ten gold pieces each that I won't see the Equalist girl again until at least after I visit on my mom's birthday," Korra boldly declared.
"Oh you are so on!" Kyuka laughed.
The Avatar went to bed that night under the assumption that she would be ten gold coins richer in six months. If only Korra knew just how fast she would lose that bet. If only Korra knew.

I wasn't planning on starting any new projects and I don't think I have ever done a winter collection, but the spirits have other plans and I have been having flashes of doing this collection so here it is! A collection of herbal offerings inspired by the eternal twilight of the Northern forests and the folkloric devil. These are some of my personal formulas and plant allies that wanted to show up for this work Every collection is an intuitive collaboration between the plants and I. All of the formulas are created and blended by me. Enjoy. Devil's Due: this is an offertory powder that can be used to feed charm bags, fill poppets or make deals at the crossroads by leaving it in offering to Old Nick. It is a blend of a year's worth of arcane dusts, ash, powers and herbs. Among them life everlasting, cinquefoil, snake shed, crow feather, grave dust, ritual ash and many many more. The Devil's Door: a magical master key, comprised of diabolical power plants for opening and closing "doorways" To use simply draw a door where you wish there to be one. To lock the door, draw an "X" over it. Recanning Formula: three powerful and important plant allies for cleansing, protection and spiritual healing. Use as an anointing oil in healing rituals, apply to hands for healing others, or drawing healing symbols. To cleanse an area anoint all of the doorways, windows and corners of the room/house. Forest Floor Healing Salve: the forest is full of healing mushrooms and lichens that prevent infection and promote healing. This salve can be use to heal minor injuries, soothe skin issues and promote healing of scars. Sometimes we need the healing embrace of the forest, but find ourself far away from its sacred groves. Use this salve to transport yourself there. Ceremonial Smoking/Burning Blend: a blend of datura, amanita muscaria, skullcap and lotus. Use during ceremony to open oneself to the spirit world. (see card) Also includes: Foxglove Herb, Datura stramonium seeds and the cutest spoon you will ever see! SIR JACKIE STEWART - THE EXCLUSIVE REVEAL by Peter Windsor
This weekend's Italian GP marks the 50th anniversary of Sir Jackie Stewart's epic drive with Elf Team Tyrrell to clinch the 1973 FIA F1 World Championship. Peter Windsor spoke exclusively to Sir Jackie on Tuesday of this week not only about that momentous day but also about his other unforgettable moments at Monza. With BRM he scored his first F1 win at the circuit; and in a Tyrrell Matra he clinched the 1969 World Championship at Monza with a dazzling slipstreaming win over Lotus' Jochen Rindt. In between those key moments, Sir Jackie evolved as the greatest F1 driver of his era and as the most important single influencer of motor racing safety and big business: no other individual, in short, has indirectly saved more lives or brought more money into F1. Peter talks to Sir Jackie about all of this, too - and about his decision, despite a recent health scare, to attend this weekend's Italian GP. Still figuring out how I want to draw these characters, but the good thing is I like my style here better than last year’s 👏🏼 I hope I use more pattern brushes in 2022, they’re FUN
Some of these pictures belong in different months, but why have an empty slot when I have something I can put in it 🤷♀️ At the end of the day it’s still an ✨art summary✨

Terence Etc. - V O R T E X - hip hip, r&b, jazz, and whatever else works for each song, i.e. a perfect match for the Brainfeeder label
First introduced into the public eye as a filmmaker with his 2012 Sundance Film Festival debut “An Oversimplification of Her Beauty”, Terence Nance (also known as Terence Etc. in more musically aligned spheres) exists on the threshold of artistic form. Terence has built a reputation over the last decade as one of America’s most adventurous filmmakers and is perhaps best known for his Peabody Award-winning HBO series “Random Acts of Flyness”, a television program that he created, directed, starred in, edited, and scored in 2018. He is truly multidisciplinary. He draws. He writes. He sings. He plays the guitar. He builds things. He harbors in himself a great many possibilities, a great many realities that whirl about seeking expression and balance. It is this desire for balance—balance of life, balance of emotions, balance of energies within— that brought forth “V O R T E X”, his debut album. “V O R T E X is a sonic tool that I made so that I can play it for myself and balance my energy between masculine and feminine; destructive and creative; domination and submission; right and left; sun and moon; day and night: opposing energies generally,” explains Terence. “The album intends to use sound, melody, song, incantation, etc. to rebalance a bodyspirit through out the constant circular movement of life.” The album was written and produced by Terence, along with long time friends and collaborators: Solomon Dorsey, Nick Hakim and his brother Nelson Bandela. Most of the songs on the 11 track album are arranged as diptychs that swell and fold in on themselves in a dizzying oscillation. Terence is flirtatious in his lamenting, with a style that swells from suggestively oracular, to vaudeville, to your local battle of the bands. The record certainly defies easy categorisation but is forged with the same spirit of experimentation and adventure synonymous with Terence’s heroes and contemporaries, artists like Andre 3K, Solange, Serpentwithfeet, Nelson Bandela, Standing on the Corner, Earl Sweatshirt, Nick Hakim, and Moses Sumney and indeed, Brainfeeder’s illustrious founder Flying Lotus. V O R T E X also draws on the literature of Louise Erdrich and Toni Morrison, as well as the drawings of Ruby Amanze whose voice is featured on the album.

Sozin’s Comet
pairing: Zuko x Princess!reader
warnings: angst, mentions of injuries, mentions of burn wounds
request: Could you write a Fire Lilies blurb about Zuko's and Princess! Reader's fight against Azula during Sozin's Comet?
~ part of the fire lilies series ~
The torrid breeze was uncomfortably hot and dry against your skin as you sat on the back of Appa’s saddle and stared out into the reddened skies. Sozin’s comet was beautiful, but you couldn’t help the sense of sadness you felt knowing that something so gorgeous would be used for such selfish, sinister intentions. The royal palace was rapidly approaching, your nerves beginning to show as you fidgeted with the shark tooth hanging from your neck, and it was with one final glance at the comet soaring through the sky that you swallowed down your fears and worries. Everything you’d gone through, the heartache you’d endured, the training you’d done, all of it had led you to this moment in time, and there was no doubt in mind that you were ready for the fight.
Zuko sits at the reigns, guiding Appa through the skies and mentally preparing for the fight against his sister. You haven’t spoken much since your departure from the White Lotus campgrounds, but he knows it’s due to your need to think and meditate before going into such an important battle. A lot has happened for you over the last twenty four hours, and the strength you posses amazes Zuko to no end and encourages him to push through. The banished Prince hadn’t planned to fight for the throne nor become the Fire Lord so soon, but he acknowledged the fact that it was the only way the two of you would ever be able live a long, happy life together. Zuko would restore balance with your help as well as the rest of the Gaang, and then this war could finally be over.
Down below Azula’s coronation takes place, her head bowed low as she prepares to take on the headpiece traditionally worn by the Fire Lord. However, the Fire sage freezes uneasily at the sight of your fast approaching trio, and with Appa’s loud bellow Azula’s frenzied eyes look up to see the three of you now standing before her.
“Sorry, but you’re not going to become Fire Lord today,” Zuko states firmly. “I am.”
“You’re hilarious,” Azula replies with mock laughter.
“And you’re going down,” Katara retorts firmly. Azula’s eyes shift from your friend to you, her lips curling into a snide smile at the sight of your solemn features. You should be used to her maliciousness by now, but there’s something in the way that her eyes seem to glint with excitement at the prospect of fighting you that has you taking a step backward.
“I expected better from you, Princess,” she coos mockingly, lips curling into a sneer.
“Enough is enough, Azula. You’ve been a bully all your life and that ends now.”
“Such a sweet sentiment,” she utters sarcastically before rising from her position on the ground. “You want to be Fire Lord, Zuzu? Fine, let’s settle this. Just you and me, brother, the showdown that was always meant to be— Agni Kai!”
You expect Zuko to deny her challenge, to call her crazy and demand another option, but to your surprise he replies with a scowl, “You’re on.”
“Zuko,” you chide gently, “she’s just trying to trick you, you can’t do this. Don’t fall for it.”
“I know what I’m doing. I can take her.”
“But even you admitted to your uncle that you would need help facing Azula,” Katara argues, equally disturbed at the idea of an Agni Kai between the two siblings.
“There’s something off about her,” Zuko notes. “I can’t explain it, but she’s slipping. And this way, no one else has to get hurt.”
His golden eyes meet your own in an apologetic stare, his warm hands coming up to cup your cheeks and pull your face closer to his own so that he may gift you with a comforting kunik. Your anxiety is growing by the second, but the way in which he holds you so close and secure is enough to quell your fears for now.
“It’s going to be alright,” he soothes gently. “I promise.”
“I can’t lose anyone else,” you whisper, a single tear sliding down your cheek that Zuko is quick to wipe away.
“And you won’t.”
“Oh, enough already,” Azula snarls harshly. “Are you going to face me or not?”
With one final kiss to the forehead, Zuko releases you before taking his position across the courtyard from his sister. You stand on the sidelines with Katara, her hand held tightly in your own as you prepare to watch the match about to take place.
“It’s going to be okay,” Katara comforts. “Zuko knows what he’s doing.”
“I hope you’re right...”
“I’m sorry it has to end this way, brother,” Azula says with a smirk while unceremoniously removing her robe and tossing it to the ground.
“No, you’re not,” Zuko utters solemnly, and with a smirk Azula shoots the first blast of fire— the Agni Kai has begun.
Brilliant blasts of blue and red light up the courtyard as Zuko and Azula battle. Both fight with an intensity and ferocity like you’ve never seen before, the rooftops that surround them are on fire, but neither sibling seems to let up. Both are equally matched and filled with determination to win, but a blast that Azula narrowly manages to miss has her eyes widening in consternation. Her brows furrow with rage before she charges at Zuko, but a spiraling kick that vaguely reminds you of a move you’d seen previously performed by Aang sends Azula flying through the air until she tumbles to a stop. Her hair hangs wildly from her face as she rises back to her feet, appearance disheveled as she heaves and eyes burning with hatred for the brother she had deemed weaker than her the moment she learned what weakness was.
“No lightning today?” Zuko questions almost tauntingly. “What’s the matter, afraid I’ll redirect it?”
“What is he doing??” You utter in quiet disbelief. You can feel your nerves beginning to return at the deranged look on Azula’s features, and before you even realize your feet are moving you find yourself rushing towards the scene with Katara.
“Oh, I’ll show you lightning!”
Thunder booms from the sky as Azula begins to conjure the blue light, fingertips swirling in grand circular movements as she harnesses its power and readies the lightning to strike. From across the way Zuko stands in ready position; his shoulders are relaxed and he takes a small breath as he prepares himself to deflect her attack.
Everything seems to move in slow motion once Azula’s crazed eyes leave her brother and focus on your figure. Your features are sullen and fretful as you watch on, completely defenseless and unsuspecting of an attack. If it hadn’t been for you Zuko never would have become such a disappointment to the family. If it weren’t for you he never would have left to join your little group. If it weren’t for you Azula would have been crowned Fire Lord by now with Mai and Ty Lee still at her side. For some reason beyond her comprehension Zuko loved you, and it seemed it was up to her to teach the both of you a lesson. There was no room for weakness when it came to winning, and she’d make sure Zuko learned this good and well.
With a smirk and a sudden, fluid motion of her fingertips Azula’s blast of lightening flies straight towards you and Katara. Your body freezes in place and your first instinct is to shield her from the attack. Zuko’s eyes widen in horror as he realizes the danger you’re in, that that your life is mere seconds away from ending at the hands of his sister.
“No!” He shouts desperately, and a horrified shriek falls from your lips as the lightning strikes Zuko right in the chest. His body crumples to the floor, convulsing as the shocks of electricity course through him, and though Katara attempts to hold you back she can’t stop you from sprinting towards him.
“Zuko!” You cry out, vision blurry with tears as you rush towards his side only to suddenly be knocked off of your feet by the blast of fire you narrowly manage to avoid. Azula’s maniacal laughter sends chills down your spine as you scramble back onto your feet and skillfully avoid the relentless balls of fire she hurdles at you.
“You were never good enough for my brother!” She sneers. “You made him weak!”
“I never needed your approval,” you glower. With the motion of a roundhouse kick you guide the nearby water out from the stream through the use of your foot and send shards of ice hurtling towards Azula. She doges most of them, but one mages to rip through her sleeve and nick the skin of her bicep. She growls, golden irises aflame with anger and resentment, and just as she raises her hands to attack Katara is on the defensive.
“Go, I’ve got your back!” She calls to you, and you don’t waste another minute before rushing back to Zuko’s side. Falling to your knees beside his barely conscious body, you use your strength to flip him onto his backslide so that you have access to his wound. His robes are tattered and a gnarly scar is already beginning to settle against his skin. There isn’t much time.
You gather water from the air, a feat that’s much more difficult than usual considering how dry the atmosphere is but you manage, and with your powers at the ready you carefully rest your hands on Zuko’s chest and begin the healing process.
“Don’t worry,” you murmur quietly, tears welling in your eyes, “you’re going to be okay.”
A loud crash pulls your attention away from Zuko, and before you have time to react a gale of fire comes launching straight towards you. With wide eyes and a panicked gasp you attempt to use the water in your hands to create a shield of ice to block the attack, but your reflexes are too slow and the shield isn’t thick enough, and with a deafening crack the ice shatters and leaves you vulnerable to the flames.
The pained yelp that leaves you the moment the flames come into contact with your skin is gut wrenching for Katara who lies a few feet away in the rubble. Your first instinct was to hide behind your hands, and though the ice had lessened the force of the blast it hadn’t stopped the damage you’d endured. Your flesh is aflame and the pain is unbearable, tears welling in your eyes as you scramble to heal them, but bending only seems to worsen the ache.
“You’re nothing without your bending,” Azula cackles before returning her attention to your fellow water bender who is now back on her feet and rushing to hide behind one of the pillars. “Come back here, peasant!”
With Azula distracted you rush to the canal and stick your hands into the cool, running water. Anguished sobs fall past your lips as you push through the pain. You need to be able to bend so that you can protect yourself against another attack and, more importantly, so you can heal Zuko. You work so that burns become tolerable, not worrying just yet about completely healing them, and when you feel that you’re ready you remove your hands from the water and hurry back to Zuko’s aid.
His chest rises and falls slowly, and with the use of the water from the fountain as well as from your own tears you rest your hands upon his wound and begin to heal him. Uncomfortable tingles shoot through your palms and bite at your fingertips but you ignore it, holding back the tears and the whimper that crawls through your throat and instead focusing your energy on Zuko. Katara is suddenly at your side, and as she kneels down beside you with anxious anticipation in her eyes Zuko finally begins to wake.
“Oh, Zuko!” You exclaim tearfully, your whole body seeming to sigh in relief as he gives you the tiniest smile he can muster.
“Hello, Princess,” he utters hoarsely while Katara helps you get him back on his feet. His features soften at the sight of your hands as he carefully takes them in his own and assesses the damage. You’ll be lucky if you make it out of this without any nerve damage, and it’s likely that you’re going to carry permanent scars on your skin for the rest of your life. “Your hands...”
“Saving you was more important than healing myself,” you assure him with a faint smile. “Besides, now we’re a matching set.”
Your attempt to make a joke in the midst of such a solemn moment causes Zuko to crack the tiniest of smiles, but it fades at the sight of Azula. Chained to the sewer grate, the Princess thrashes desperately against her restraints in an attempt to free herself. Flames shoot from her mouth and as the reality of her situation finally starts to sink in she begins to cry. Her sobs are heartbreaking and full of agony, and despite your victory there is no celebrating. Azula was the product of manipulation and abuse, and despite all the horrible things she’d done to you and your friends you truly felt sorry for her.
Zuko guides you away from the scene and towards the palace, his arm tenderly wrapped around your waist and his eyes never once leaving your hands.
“Let’s get you bandaged up,” he suggests comfortingly.
“And then what?” You ask quietly only for him to exchange an uneasy glance with Katara. His eyes meet yours then, and though they are comforting they are also filled with the slightest hint of doubt.
“We wait and see if Aang finished the job.”
