Not sure how to explain a certain phenomenon but. When a Piece of Media has a Thing in it that's a real life Thing and kind of, like, random? like it's not something most people think about much. But in the Piece of Media the Random Thing is Very Important. And then the fans of the Piece of Media all share this connection to a totally random fucking Thing. I think that's beautiful. I think of this every time I see r/BlackCountryNewRoad posting about Concorde airplanes, and every time I get reminded of the Eiffel Tower and immediately feel an intense, almost nostalgic longing for it purely because of the fiction podcast Orbiting Human Circus.
(Of course the Thing can also be everyday objects like bagels for Everything Everywhere All At Once, or, well, I think this is what the Stanley Parable people have going on with buckets)

renfield is not very good so if somehow you hadnt heard this yet annd were planning to watch it this is your message to not bother
#txt#i laughed a couple times but didnt find it that funny and the female lead was terrible#nic cage was fine the male lead was decent#i wish the female lead wasnt a cop so very badly bc it would have at least been more watchable that way#as it was it was trying SO hard to be like haha hey did you know cops are corrupt??? but some of them are good wink wink#for example this woman is a good cop bc she's the love interest so the murders she commits are justified!#it was also CARTOONISHLY gory. i'm seriously talking like fallout 4 THIS IS WHAT FIREARMS DO! shit#which idk just didnt really feel like it justified its own presence in the film#there was some bad directing too some weird cuts and weird missing shots and stuff#i think they could have made a better movie about the prompt 'dracula but he's emotionally abusing renfield and it's about renfield instead#without having the female lead be a cop and without all the dumb crime family stuff#maybe im just a hater but i didnt care for it

The other main character's last name is Quincy.
They reshot scenes from the Bela Lugosi Dracula (very convincingly, too, I've seen a lot of fake old B&W movies-in-other-movies and most of them are either too sharp or the wrong colour or just off somehow) with Nic Cage and Nicholas Hoult, as far as I could tell shot-for-shot.
During at least one of Drac's grand entrances, the soundtrack is a revamped version of the Philip Glass theme from the 1931 Dracula.
MCR's "Na Na Na". I have nothing more to say.
At one point, two named characters and a handful of nameless backgrounders are watching one of the sequences of cartoonish violence through a set of cameras. One of those backgrounders is a bored-looking goth. We the audience get to see Renfield rip off a guy's arms and beat another couple guys with them, and then it cuts back to the characters watching this unfold on the screen, all of whom look horrified, disgusted, or disappointed - except the previously bored-looking goth, who is beaming from ear to ear and clapping her hands right in front of her face, which. I was. Literally doing in my seat in the theatre at that exact moment.
At another point, the characters are looking up a specific vampire-hunting-related thing on the internet, and I turned to my friend and said, "Oh, they are going to find so much Supernatural fanfiction in that search". That didn't happen - that we got to see onscreen - but they did call back to it later and specifically namedrop tumblr.
Went and saw Renfield and like. Oh they really were thinking of the tumblr Dracula girlies when they made this one.
#it was charming and weird and nic cage's drac was absolutely perfect for the central metaphor#both ridiculous and menacing at the same time#also it was one HECK of a lot splatterier than I was expecting. I am talking literal fountains of chocolate-syrup blood#and. like. well he did rip off a motherfucker's arms and beat another motherfucker with them.#and that was not the goriest or the least physically plausible example in the movie#renfield (2023)

i'm so happy for you getting the operation you needed and thankful you're talking about your experience with it!! it's my goal to get the same so this is very helpful + interesting + i wish you a speedy and joyous recovery 🤎
Thank u!!! And yeah I love reading other ppls experiences bc im one of those people that gets stressed out going into a situation unless I know every single possible detail and i kept getting frustrated by accounts that were like
"here's my experience hope it helps someone! Got to the hospital at 7 am, ummm went in like a long time after? Then I had the surgery :) then i woke up + my boyfriend was waiting outside for me <3, and then i was let go not a short time later but not a long time either? The ride home was 45 minutes and 42 seconds and now Im home eating a half gallon tub of rocky road ice cream and watching all of nic cage's movies with my boyfriend (who is 5'9 28M btw) and I fell asleep with exactly 3 blankets on me :) it hurts a bit i guess. Anyway here's the list of the movies and every detail about what me and my boyfriend said and did with each other in celebration: " like ok yes thank you so much for the important details.
I might even go back and add more details bc obviously you wont understand some sensations until you feel them, I myself didn't practice getting up without use of abdominal muscles before the surgery like some ppl suggested bc well I don't know how the pain will feel and how I'll work around it (for example)! But I wanna describe as much as I can....

Dragon Ball Magic: Return of the Asspull
So the word on Twitter is that there have been leaked reports of a new anime called "Dragon Ball Magic". I'm pretty sure it's all made-up bullshit, but I remember thinking Dragon Ball Super was a pipe dream too, and here we are. So I may as well discuss the topic here.
The whole thing comes across like a modern day Dragon Ball AF, where there seems to be a lot more emphasis on hype and speculation than tangible evidence. For example, there's a twitter account dedicated to gathering all the information available about the new series, but all it really does is amplify rumors and fanworks. When I search for the title on Twitter I mostly get skeptics making fun of the idea, or true believers talking about the show as if it were objective fact. Like AF, there's a lot of excitement but no clear picture of what the the thing actually is. The only real consensus I can find is the following:
Dragon Ball Magic will feature the Supreme Kai
Goku will be turned into a child, just like in Dragon Ball GT
Geekdom101 talked about this once, so that means it must be real.
And that's why I led off with the screenshot of the tail-yanking scene from GT, because I was trying to find an appropriate image of GT Goku and the Supreme Kai, and... yeah, that's it.
The more I think about it, the more this feels like something an internet troll would come up with. Like, someone started with the stupidest moment in the worst Dragon Ball series ever, and built a rumor around it. Oh, and also the rumor namedrops Geekdom101, just to make it extra absurd. It's the sort of thing gullible people would flock to while everyone in on the joke would have a laugh over it.
I don't know enough about Geekdom101 to insult him properly, but I'm like 90% sure he's an asshole. Back when Twitter actually worked properly, I'd see his name trending and there'd be a bunch of people in the fandom going "Dammit, what's he done this time?" Does he have inside sources in the anime industry? I dunno, maybe he does, but I think he's got a credibility problem. I mean, he calls himself "Geekdom101", and his avatar is Golden Frieza with a pair of glasses and holding a lightsaber. His YouTube videos look like a clickbait parody, with things like "Kai-o-ken EXPLAINED" and "WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR". Also plenty of what-if and who-would-win videos.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest that maybe this is a guy who makes a decent living off his fandom channel, and when there's not much going on, he'll cobble together a story just to keep the conversation going and draw more attention to his videos. Which... I mean, if that's profitable, so be it, but if Geekdom told me water was wet I'd want to double-check for myself.
As to the rest, even if Toei was really planning something like DB Magic, there's no guarantee they'd actually follow through with it. Plans change, and even if this were 100% legit, it means nothing without an official confirmation and a release date. That "Superman Lives!" movie with Nic Cage was a real thing... right until it wasn't.
But I find the concept too vague and too specific all at once. Like, okay, it's Supreme Kai and a de-aged Goku. Why them in particular? What are they going to do? It just feels like something someone made up to get a reaction from the fans. GT likers are supposed to get all excited or defensive about a potential GT reboot, and other fans are supposed to get upset that the Supreme Kai got the lead instead of their favorite C-lister.
Compare this to the early reveals for DBS: Superhero. Toei teased a few details, and gradually it became clear that the Red Ribbon Army was back somehow, and maybe there were some new androids, and there was a lot about Piccolo and Gohan, so it seemed like they'd be a big part of the story. It wasn't a complete picture, but it made sense from a promotional standpoint. People were more concerned with the CG animation than any of the characters or plot.
I mean, anyone can come up with this stuff. I mean, my uncle works for Nintendo, and he told me that the next anime is going to be called Dragon Ball Snazzy, and it'll be about Vegeta and 18 starting up a private detective agency. Or... I don't know, Dragon Ball Jazz, which is a prequel series featuring a young Dr. Brief and Gine as secret agents. Wait, how about Dragon Ball Spatula, starring Elder Guru and Launch as they explore the multiverse!
And you know, I'd probably watch any of these shows. Hell, I sat through GT, and it was awful! The bar's pretty low when it comes to making a Dragon Ball project that I'm willing to try out. But people have been clamoring for Dragon Ball Super II ever since the first series went off the air in 2018, and that was years ago. This Dragon Ball Magic business just sounds like the same old empty hype with a fresh coat of paint.
Or maybe the whole thing is real, but my advice is: Don't get your hopes up. Life's too short to get worked up over things that might never happen. If it actually comes to pass, then it'll still be just as much fun whether you believed it ahead of time or not.
#dragon ball#dragon ball magic#goku#supreme kai#elder supreme kai#suguro#and suguro's dumbass kid i forget his name

i’ve seen something brought up with longlegs that i didn’t completely catch whenever i watched it, and i feel like with my posts hyping it up it would be irresponsible of me to not bring this up, but i have seen a few people talking about the transmisogyny with the character longlegs. it’s definitely not as blatant as silence of the lambs (for example) where the villain is just explicitly depicted as a caricature of a predatory trans woman, but with longlegs there’s definitely this whole Creepy Feminine Man thing going on. as well as the fact that apparently there’s promotional material directly comparing longlegs to silence of the lambs. it’s not really something i picked up on initially, probably because i’m not tranfem. the character longlegs does have longer hair but i thought that was to make him look more unkempt, and he does talk with a higher-pitched voice but i’m not familiar with nic cage at all so i thought that could’ve just been his normal voice/pitch. but yeah looking back on it there’s definitely this feminine element to the character that really parallels other transmisogynistic caricatures and i think it shouldn’t be ignored when discussing it. and it would be irresponsible of me to not bring that up especially after giving the movie praise on here.

guys im sooo fucking sick of these annoying longlegs fans crawling all of my post. People online lack reading comprehension so bad and have to jump through hoops to try and make me think the incredibly influential and famous actor nic cage saying something transphobic about the character HE portrayed in the film isnt as important as the writers intention. The writers can intend whatever they want it doesnt change the impact and Ive seen and heard the impact and Ive seen these fans harass trans women who spoke about longlegs being trans misogynistic while others turn around and try to claim IM transphobic (very funny this is how i know they’ve never seen my account before) for having historical context and knowledge of the horror genres intensely engrained transphobia.
It sucks because the post was mainly about longlegs being a drop in the bucket of horror and i spend only one page really focused on the movie itself and the rest focused on the rise of transphobia in the US and horrors historic ties with other examples like Buffalo Bill.
#I cant really do anything to change these peoples minds they feel so embolden to spout the same arguments ive seen a hundred times#this is the last time ill talk abt this and i will now just be hashtag protecting my peace i care a lot about this conversation and it hurt#that what i thought was a very tame criticism has become people ignoring the entire point of my post. Since when did longlegs discourse#become more important than the overall trend of transphobic horror and the rise of anti transness in the US#this was made for my schools paper longlegs was a HOOK because thats how you write a journalistic comic. I may delete this post later too#im reallt trying to sort my thoughts cuz this situation sucks bc its not actual conversations just people telling me to shut up calling me#transphobic and dumb like i wanna have a conversation!!!

Cavalier in One's Personal Life: The Gates Family's Views on Romance
Long before I knew the 2003 script was out there or what it contained, I was slightly obsessed with the exchange Ben and Abigail have in the dressing rooms where Ben proclaims:
BEN Well, my father thinks I've been a little too cavalier* in my personal life.
This entire conversation is fascinating to me because it feels so out of place. Again, long before I knew there was a pre-Nic Cage script you could read or how Ben Gates would be characterized there, I guessed that at one point he was written as a hot, young 'ladies man' —whatever tf that means. My evidence? This exchange does not fit the Ben Gates character we meet on screen.
The Ben Gates we meet on screen in National Treasure is an outcast pushing 40 with one (1) friend, less than stellar social skills, and no relationship with his only living family (at least that we see in the first movie.) He is not the Hollywood ideal of a leading man.
In a previous article we explored how fundamentally the casting of Nicolas Cage shaped the character of Ben Gates, and in another we looked at the reading of Ben as autistic. In short: Nic Cage's presence/appearance/acting choices changed Ben A LOT, including turning a Hollywood Neurotypical Hot Man™ into a middle aged autistic weirdo. (And thank goodness. Can you imagine how much less fun National Treasure would be without him??)
But I maintain that this whole "cavalier in my personal life" exchange dates from before the Cage-ification of the character.
And I love that for it.
Because what happens is...
...in a version of the story where Ben is a hot young serial womanizer, the 2004 Hollywood ideal, I would take this exchange at face value. Patrick—who in this movie is portrayed as having one monogamous heterosexual love of his life who he lost early and never moved on from—thinks Ben is playing it fast and loose with his personal life. Something that would generally be glorified at this time in this culture. The James Bond thing: a new sexy woman for every adventure.
But since that is not the version of Ben that we meet in the actual movie, this line transforms. (For me, at least.)
Think about it. Other than Patrick saying this to Ben ("Is she pregnant?") or Ben relating to Abigail what Patrick says about him, where in the story do we see any evidence of Ben living his life like this? Short answer: we don't.
Outside of discussing what his father thinks about his personal life, Ben never tells us anything from his own point of view. We don't see or hear anything about old girlfriends, lost loves, jilted exes, or anything of that nature. As far as the text of the film is showing us, Ben has no personal life to speak of.
Yes, in the 2003 script there was a mention of old girlfriend(s) who got chased away because 'Ben wouldn't stop talking about some girl named 'Charlotte''—which is funny, but that detailed did not survive into the finished film. It also actually still jives with this reading really well.
The Ben Gates we actually meet on screen does not seem to be the person his father portrays him as at all. I supposed you could argue that at one point in his past—perhaps the last time Patrick really knew him—he was like this. But what we see on screen is the far opposite. For example, it's always Riley who comments on Abigail's physical appearance; it's never Ben.
RILEY Being kept down by the man. A very cute man. BEN *geeks out over her accent*
And later
RILEY (over comm) Is that that hot girl? How does she look? BEN (to Abigail) *discussing GW campaign buttons*
In this second interaction Ben is face to face with Abigail, while Riley is on the radio, so Riley does have the freedom to say whatever he wants, while Ben does not. However, it would be totally within the scope of Ben's conversation with Abigail to jump off of Riley's comment and say something like "You look lovely tonight," but he never does. Throughout the whole interaction, Ben never comments on Abigail's appearance.
I've already discussed their first meeting at length, and I won't rehash too much now, but suffice it to say they are mutually curious about one another in a very intellectual way. An "I don't usually meet people who are quite on my frequency" way.
Which leads me to two conclusions:
Conclusion 1: In the context of the finished film, Patrick's comments about Ben's personal life say way more about Patrick than they do about Ben. They speak to someone who is very conservative in his views of love and family, and who is very much a believer in the traditional 'one true love' narrative. Anything outside of that is a deviation of which Patrick does not approve. I mean, having more than one partner whom you've said "I love you" to is not unusual?? I would guess that in modern dating culture, people who have only said "I love you" to their one true love is much less common than people who try out various serious relationships but they don't all work out. What year do you think it is Patrick? What storybook did you fall out of?
Conclusion 2: Ben Gates is on the asexual and/or aromantic spectrums. Specifically I'm thinking ace demiromantic or double demi.
Think about it. All we actually know about his personal life is that he's failed to follow the traditional model in a way that Patrick doesn't understand. While Ben's line about saying "I love you" to more than one person could speak to a serial monogamy lifestyle at some point, it could also speak to a) Patrick's unrealistic standards for "one true love" and/or Ben's inability to find a footing in the dating world he's expected to inhabit.
My personal headcanon is for Ben as someone who's always on the outside trying to fit in. He knows what he's supposed to say, and what he's supposed to feel, so he goes through the motions but his relationships inevitably fail because there's not a lot of real emotion behind them. Treasure hunting was always his real passion anyway, so eventually he gives up on pretending he's interested in anything else.
His fascination with Abigail starts on a very intellectual footing, and slowly grows into a possible romance as they get to know each other. That screams demiromantic to me.
It should be noted that I'm wildly biased here, because I am aroace and will aspec-ify any blorbos I can get my hands on. But it also feels very in line with the autism reading, since there can be significant overlap between the two labels. However you parse it, I view National Treasure as a story about a guy who does not quite fit in carving out a place where he does fit in, is respected for the person that he is, and surrounded by people who understand and vibe with him—even if he has to steal the Declaration of Independence to do it.
What queer NT headcanons do you have?
Happy Pride!
*I just finished reading Harrow the Ninth and if I don't make a reference to it with all this talk of cavaliers I will explode.

I noticed one of your top posts is Bi Rose and John with their prude flags, and I noticed John had a pin for a trans flag, and you tagged the post with “transmasc”
Do you headcanon John as a trans male? I’d love to hear out people and how they personally interpret characters from a fictional work!
yes! though i have many interpretations of the characters, some closer to canon than others, i hold some headcanons very dear to my heart, transmasc john being one of them! mainly being someone who doesn't fully align with one gender fully all the time (being genderfluid) i think a character like john is an amazing example of positive masculinity in many senses! even though hes mostly a silly nerdy boy, with boy-ish interests like action movies or wanting to be like Nic Cage in con air (being this sort of father figure who does everything for those he loves), he's also very honest with his feelings and open to sharing them with others, he has moments of being emotional openly without shame! plus all the messages from dad egbert, and john's reaction to wearing a suit just like his dad feel like some sort of gender euphoria for him! it adds to john and dad's relationship too showing how supporting of a father he truly is accepting his child no matter how they identify! i love this interpretation so much because there's a lot in the story to support john's masculinity in such a positive light!

7, 17, 27, 37, 47, 57
Woah, thanks for all the numbers! I did 7 in the previous post, but let's see:
17. "opinion on insecurities" hahaha, I didn't even read all of these before I reblogged that thing! My most immediate reaction is that sometimes when you're trying to have an honest reckoning with your flaws and handicaps, people tell you you're just being insecure, and this is one of the central frustrations of my entire existence. If you're forced to constantly pretend that you're awesome and capable of anything, it makes it a lot harder to come to terms with what isn't working. But everyone has insecurities I think, they're probably unavoidable. I guess some people base their entire personality around an insecurity and that's not great, but I think the only thing to do is to try to be honest and lucid about your weaknesses. That's the only point you can proceed from.
27. If I gave you a real accounting of all the things I hate, you would regret it! It's a lot of things, TOO MANY things. I'll just pick one for now: I hate movies about characters who are sort of reclusive, where other characters mob up on them and force them to participate in society as if this is a great gift, as if all human beings want the same thing and that thing is extreme amounts of attention and activity, as if no human being could possibly just enjoy their own company and some peace and quiet. There are a lot of variations on this theme but a good example is THE STATION AGENT. I was like, what the fuck, leave that guy alone!
37. Hmm I also have a lot of favorite actors since I spend most of my time watching movies. Last night I rewatched the incredible THE WORLD'S GREATEST SINNER and I was thinking about how Timothy Carey is like Nicolas Cage before Nicolas Cage, like they're descended from the same stock somehow. They even look alike to me. And then I was thinking about how Michael Moriarty has that same kind of manic, improvisational energy, and all three men are tall. Actually Nic Cage isn't as tall as I always think he is, but Moriarty is 6'3" and Carey was a little over. So Timothy Carey and Nicolas Cage have more similar faces, but Michael Moriarty and Timothy Carey are more the same height. I do not know what this is meant to prove.
47. "Turn ons," eh? I'm prejudicially inclined toward people who are really smart and articulate, but I also like it when people are strangely naive and sweet. I like hairy, vascular forearms and hands, and glasses, and widow's peaks. I like people who have obsessions. I'm totally straight but I'm fascinated by tough, androgynous women and tomboys. I like men who look like weird movie villains. I am attracted to basically all weird movie villains.
But now I want to volunteer one "turn off" from #48, which is that I have zero tolerance for people who are really into deliriously dysfunctional sadomasochistic relationships. Which is what most media will tell you is "true love" or something, and it does look pretty good from the outside, I mean who doesn't want to dissolve into a morbid, swooning obsession? But having experienced a couple of those things, it became very clear to me that they are essentially infantile, ugly, and stupid, and people who insist on that dynamic are like a baby who cries over their shitty diaper and pisses in your face when you try to change it for them. I almost miss being able to enjoy that type of libidinous delirium, but the whole thought of it just makes me sick now. People who pretend to be vampires are never as cool as they want you to think they are.
57. My favorite animal is all reptiles. I like a lot of animals, but reptiles and amphibians more than anything. Right now I'm doing this study of Italian cannibal movies which I knew were full of animal cruelty, but somehow I managed to forget that reptiles seem to get the worst of it. :(

Yay we made it through 2023!
The end of Dec always feels hard to me; generally, I just want it to be over with so I can start with a new year. But I do want to take a moment to acknowledge the good things this year brought me.
When starting 2023, I'd felt creatively dead and emotionally empty for a good 3 years (lot of bad stuff happened). I was surprised when this silly Tiktok meme of a guy in a car with Nic Cage kept popping up and making me smile. My wife told me 'Hey, you should watch that movie, it's fun and that actor is great'. After a deep dive into Pedro's filmography (Joel really sealed the deal for me, my god) and getting sucked into this fandom with Met Gala, I eventually ended up here on Tumblr. And damn, has it been a wild ride, these past five months.
I'm so grateful for all the people I've gotten to know here, friendships that developed, the absurd amount of fic I've read, but perhaps most of all how a combination of those three things led me to write 'for fun' again for the first time in many years. Academia, medical leave, and life shit basically had stomped that completely out of my system - not to mention wrecked any confidence I had about my skills and most of my self esteem. So goddamn, it sure as hell was a surprise to suddenly find myself with all these fic ideas and then actually following through with them, thanks to everybody's support!
Over the past months, I posted Pt 1 of 'Nothing That I Didn't Know' (Frankie x Santi x reader) and I'm currently working on pt 2, which hopefully will be ready some time in the next week. I also put up snippets of a Rockford/Peña WIP that ended up becoming a much bigger storyline than I expected, and I'm really excited to start putting out proper chapters in probably Feb/March!
It's the first time that I have a group of friends (who are also writers) around me who have been so encouraging, who help me brainstorm and prod at new ideas, review my writing and give me advice, and overall just make this whole process of creation something that is fun and exciting. Especially @legendary-pink-dot, @sin-djarin, @imalrightllama, @magpiepills and @morallyinept! I can't even express in words how much your friendship and support means to me, not to mention how you're constantly helping me to become better at writing down what I want to convey - either directly through your advice, or leading by example with your own work. 💜
But even beyond the people named above, there are SO many of you for whose friendship I'm so grateful, or who I simply am so excited about to be mutuals with, or whose writing has just affected me in so many ways! I'm always worried about leaving out people by accident when I start tagging, so please, if you read this: I am grateful for knowing you and hanging out here with you here (or on Discord)! MWAH.

[SPOILERS] What did you like most about Longlegs? I really liked the camera work and soundscape (LOVED the weird ear ringing background noise thing, reminded me of Get our a little, wish they hadn't layered it with dark whispers #36 or surprise violins #2 to drive the point home), Maika Monroe obviously, but I guess I expected too much of the story. I thought the ending lacked something to truly be satisfying.. can't put my finger on it. It's like they over explained everything but without truly immersing us in the tale. Wish we had seen more of these dolls in action for example instead of Nic Cage telling us abt it
hey! and yeah all those things were excellent. I loved the editing so much and all the slow zooms were so powerful. the atmospheric anxiety really creeps up on you. I didn't feel particularly fearful while watching the movie (not a bad thing) but when I got home I got scared seeing my own silhouette reflected in my kitchen window djfshkfjd spoilers below
and yeah you're right the explanation diminished it for me too. I figured it out instinctively from the bit about the c-section scar (shoutout to intuitive mommy issues!!! shoutout to MOMMY longlegs!!) but even if I hadn't I feel it was still heavy handed. they should've done away with the whole bedtime story and went straight to the birthday party, sprinkling in a few more details about the mum as a character (being a nurse, more attention on the locked door to the basement etc) to set it up better. which now that I think about it they should've done anyway. kinda mad that of all the things they chose NOT to explain it was the snakes... I needed more of them...
osgood perkins has apparently said he wasn't thinking about silence of the lambs when he developed this which I don't believe At All but having the reference in my head did elevate it for me. oomfs noted that the queer-coded psych ward manager and forensics guy were kind of a nice touch to balance out the queerphobia implied by that link to sotl if that makes sense??? like to not demonise us. which I did appreciate

if there’s a movie/show with a remake/adaptation but one version is universally considered the “good” one, you can have a lot of fun trolling people by pretending you think they’re talking about the bad one whenever they bring up the good one. for example:
person: have you ever watched “the wicker man”? it’s so good
me: omg yeah! nic cage was amazing in that movie!!
person: ☹️💬

If you watched renfield (2023) in theatres or on streaming and enjoyed it, I cannot recommend enough getting a dvd copy, to own or from your library if you can
There are so many special features, including a lot of deleted scenes and alternate takes (personal highlight from deleted scenes being the dance number, personal highlight from alternate takes being someone referring to renfield as a “reanimated Buster Keaton”), as well as a lotttt of behind the scenes segments, usually about the practical effects that went into the film and it really enhanced my enjoyment of the movie
It also really makes it evident how much respect there is for Dracula’s cinematic history there was during this film, esp of course the 1931 version. Examples that come to mind are Nicholas Hoult talking about trying to emulate Dwight Frye’s Renfield laugh or honestly anything Nic Cage said — it was a passion project for him and you can really tell

Ok I’m on the verge of falling into Despair so As Per Tradition here’s a list of horror movies I’ve watched for the first time this year that I’ve really liked
-The Wicker Man 1972
So here’s a good example of why spoilers don’t really bother me. I knew the ending going in (bc of the Nic Cage remake) and it still FUCKED ME UP SEVERELY. Like I was in TEARS. I didn’t even like the main character but GEEZE. It was 90% the sound of the ending scene I think.ikr the singing and the hymn and the cows screaming all layered on top of each other. It’s awful (high compliment). On a lighter note it’s also a secret musical and all the songs are bops :D
-Sinister
Speaking of knowing the ending and also horrifying sound design. This got spoiled for me by a classmate like 13 years ago. Was still sitting there watching it like 😨 Like god I get why this is considered THE scariest movie. Like hell damn this is one scary movie. Mostly bc of the music like holy god I felt like eas having a fever dream. This movie genuinely reminds me of the time I was sick on the couch slipping in and out of consciousness and my mom put on American Horror Story. I’m mad it was a Blumhouse film i genuinely believe it would be a masterpiece if Blumhouse wasn’t forcing jumpscares in there.
-X/Pearl
Lumping these two together cause idk they’re both in the same series and I love them. Pearls fucking great I love it dearly. And X reminded me I’m scared of Alligators uhhh rip Bobbi Lynn
-Longlegs
Lee Harker ❤️❤️❤️ I vibe with this one I don’t care. I understand it deep in my soul. It’s also one of those things of whenever I watch it or watch a reaction to it I notice something new and I love that shit!! What a cool fuckin movie
-In A Violent Nature
Oh I vibed heavily with this one. A jaunty nature walk with my best friend Johnny. Turning a girl into a human pretzel. Awesome. Was emotionally impacted by the ending and was apparently the only one who was!! Spent the weekend afterwards wondering why my interpretation of the ending was the complete opposite of everyone else’s and now I might make a video about that because. What the fuck
-Saint Maud
This movie deeply wounded me. I also watched it on my birthday. What an awful decision that was I was just sitting there in shock afterwards like. Oh no. Oh god. Anyways awesome movie I never want to see it again
-Speak No Evil 2022
Speaking of movies that fucked me up I never want to see again. I was literally pausing the movie every 5 minutes to scream at the characters. And then the end made me sick. I respect the hell out of it though. And I deeply resonated with it bc IM a spineless coward who gets roped into awful social situations all the time!! The characters are me!! Someday a freaks gonna invite me over to their house and I’m gonna be too polite to leave and then they’ll kill me and I’ll just be like. Damn Speak No Evil 2022 was right. Also fuck the American remake
-Happy Death Day
…Ok this has no business being as good as it is wtf. Amazing lead too like wow Tree is such a great character I love her. This is a good one if you want to get into horror but are nervous about it btw bc there’s basically no gore and it’s really really fun
-Suitable Flesh
I’m gonna be honest idk if I LIKE this movie. Or if I’m just shell shocked. That there’s a possession movie where a demon possesses a woman for the first time and then experiences a female orgasm and is like WOW THIS IS GREAT IM ONLY POSSESSING WOMEN FROM NOW ON!!! Like excuse me???????
-Strange Darling
Yesssss this movie is soooooo good!! Idk even what to say about it I’m starting to lose steam it’s just really really good :D
-Stream
This movie is not good. But that kill. With the tick tack toe. Was the most fun I had in the theater all year I was scream laughing and rolling around in my seat. Ah god bless I hope they make more i need more crazy shit like that in my life
-Blink Twice
Honestly really good thriller. There’s a bunch of twists but they’re GOOD twists they were set up properly. And some solid female solidarity in that movie, always nice to see. The last five minutes were…. Umm…. Less good? Idk how I feel about that yet. But I love the rest of it!!
-Oddity
I just thought it was neat :) EXTREMELY tense opening too oh my goddddd
-When Evil Lurks
That kill. You know the one. It made me cry ☹️
-Abigail
Soooooo the last 20 minutes were complete nonsense and drag the movie down for me but the rest is so much fun I’m including it here. Like genuinely just a really good time. That one dance scene was so cool
-Hatchet
Oh I didn’t know this existed till like a week ago. Genuinely really enjoyed it though. Reminded me a lot of Terrifier!!! And it’s really funny. I also kinda like how the first three movies function like one narrative and despite losing the lead actress it’s shockingly seamless you could stitch them together and it would flow perfectly
-Wolf Creek
Yo what the fuck Australia. That head on a stick thing was. Actually the most upsetting thing I’d seen in a while. Haven’t worked up the courage to watch the sequel yet ahahaha
-Evil Dead 2
I just think it’s neat!!! I’ve watched it twice now. It’s like my exact sense of humor it’s so good!!
-House of 1000 Corpses
Fish Boy!! And Captain Spaulding. The rest is ummmmmm. Ummmmmmmm. I mean it’s artistically really cool and I think it’s fun so you know what it’s going here’s
-All the Chucky movies
Haha. Yea. Y’all were right these are great

not the meme!
or, I watched The Wicker Man (2006) and lived to tell the tale
(a combination of actual criticisms and the usual piss-taking, because come on, have you SEEN this film? On second thought, if the answer's no, then don't)
I'd already read @forthegothicheroine's thoughts on the film and I would like to add my resounding agreement
Despite having A LOT of the same/similar dialogue, it felt to me like the film was only engaging with the original on a superficial level? Rather than, you know, THE CORE THEMES. Like the conflict between two different strongly held belief systems! And sex vs repression! Which simply wasn't as pronounced in this film which made it a lot less interesting
the MINUTE Willow said she had a daughter in the letter I was like 'Bet you she's his. Because 9 times out of 10 in a movie when a guy's ex says she has a kid the kid turns out to be his.' And was I right? Yes I was.
👏 where 👏 was 👏 the 👏 midnight 👏 orgy 👏 you 👏 cowards 👏
(before anyone accuses me of wanting to see a midnight orgy, I'm using this as an example)
*shrek voice* they don't even have folk music
The costumes looked too Aesthetic(TM). Like, they looked like someone had raided all the cottagecore Etsy shops. And this was before the word 'cottagecore' was a thing. I much preferred the 1973 costumes which either looked like 1) clothes that you could imagine everyday people in the 70s would wear or 2) for the procession, like they had been made in an arts and crafts class, which is the look they SHOULD be going for imho
omg Alma Garrett hiiiiiii
Even though Nicolas Cage does not improve the film at all, I still think it would've been bad with or without him. See above point about themes
And you'll never guess what... the version that I watched... didn't even have the bee line (see what I did there)
Seriously, I had to go back and check I hadn't missed anything! After the islanders all surrounded him there was a vague voiceover of Nic Cage yelling part of that scene over shots of the procession, but no bees! I was so confused, especially since that was why I was watching the film in the first place!
I was already going to call this post 'not the meme!' for (near-)rhyming humour, but then it was LITERALLY NOT THE MEME. You couldn't make this up
I had to go and look it up on YOUTUBE for goodness sake
Anyway
Unless you're watching as part of some sort of bad movie thing, or to get the context for 'NOT THE BEES' (yes, hi) or because you want to watch films with Nicolas Cage in (ditto) I would save yourself the bother and stick with the original which is undeniably superior in every way
#stuff in my life#in which i watch films#the title of this post is literally true unfortunately#i was trying to keep an open mind and not automatically be like 'waaah they changed things!' as i know people are prone to do with remakes#but alas everyone who has seen the film was right. it is not good
