It's here. Official title is officially "Dragon Ball: DAIMA". Launching Fall 2024 as a 40th-anniversary celebration. Though the focus appears to still be Shin and Goku traveling to undo this, it appears EVERYONE winds up kids again. And I do mean everyone.

And yes, for those who asked, the Power Pole has returned.

Dragon Ball Magic: Return of the Asspull

So the word on Twitter is that there have been leaked reports of a new anime called "Dragon Ball Magic". I'm pretty sure it's all made-up bullshit, but I remember thinking Dragon Ball Super was a pipe dream too, and here we are. So I may as well discuss the topic here.

The whole thing comes across like a modern day Dragon Ball AF, where there seems to be a lot more emphasis on hype and speculation than tangible evidence. For example, there's a twitter account dedicated to gathering all the information available about the new series, but all it really does is amplify rumors and fanworks. When I search for the title on Twitter I mostly get skeptics making fun of the idea, or true believers talking about the show as if it were objective fact. Like AF, there's a lot of excitement but no clear picture of what the the thing actually is. The only real consensus I can find is the following:

Dragon Ball Magic will feature the Supreme Kai

Goku will be turned into a child, just like in Dragon Ball GT

Geekdom101 talked about this once, so that means it must be real.

And that's why I led off with the screenshot of the tail-yanking scene from GT, because I was trying to find an appropriate image of GT Goku and the Supreme Kai, and... yeah, that's it.

The more I think about it, the more this feels like something an internet troll would come up with. Like, someone started with the stupidest moment in the worst Dragon Ball series ever, and built a rumor around it. Oh, and also the rumor namedrops Geekdom101, just to make it extra absurd. It's the sort of thing gullible people would flock to while everyone in on the joke would have a laugh over it.

I don't know enough about Geekdom101 to insult him properly, but I'm like 90% sure he's an asshole. Back when Twitter actually worked properly, I'd see his name trending and there'd be a bunch of people in the fandom going "Dammit, what's he done this time?" Does he have inside sources in the anime industry? I dunno, maybe he does, but I think he's got a credibility problem. I mean, he calls himself "Geekdom101", and his avatar is Golden Frieza with a pair of glasses and holding a lightsaber. His YouTube videos look like a clickbait parody, with things like "Kai-o-ken EXPLAINED" and "WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR". Also plenty of what-if and who-would-win videos.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest that maybe this is a guy who makes a decent living off his fandom channel, and when there's not much going on, he'll cobble together a story just to keep the conversation going and draw more attention to his videos. Which... I mean, if that's profitable, so be it, but if Geekdom told me water was wet I'd want to double-check for myself.

As to the rest, even if Toei was really planning something like DB Magic, there's no guarantee they'd actually follow through with it. Plans change, and even if this were 100% legit, it means nothing without an official confirmation and a release date. That "Superman Lives!" movie with Nic Cage was a real thing... right until it wasn't.

But I find the concept too vague and too specific all at once. Like, okay, it's Supreme Kai and a de-aged Goku. Why them in particular? What are they going to do? It just feels like something someone made up to get a reaction from the fans. GT likers are supposed to get all excited or defensive about a potential GT reboot, and other fans are supposed to get upset that the Supreme Kai got the lead instead of their favorite C-lister.

Compare this to the early reveals for DBS: Superhero. Toei teased a few details, and gradually it became clear that the Red Ribbon Army was back somehow, and maybe there were some new androids, and there was a lot about Piccolo and Gohan, so it seemed like they'd be a big part of the story. It wasn't a complete picture, but it made sense from a promotional standpoint. People were more concerned with the CG animation than any of the characters or plot.

I mean, anyone can come up with this stuff. I mean, my uncle works for Nintendo, and he told me that the next anime is going to be called Dragon Ball Snazzy, and it'll be about Vegeta and 18 starting up a private detective agency. Or... I don't know, Dragon Ball Jazz, which is a prequel series featuring a young Dr. Brief and Gine as secret agents. Wait, how about Dragon Ball Spatula, starring Elder Guru and Launch as they explore the multiverse!

And you know, I'd probably watch any of these shows. Hell, I sat through GT, and it was awful! The bar's pretty low when it comes to making a Dragon Ball project that I'm willing to try out. But people have been clamoring for Dragon Ball Super II ever since the first series went off the air in 2018, and that was years ago. This Dragon Ball Magic business just sounds like the same old empty hype with a fresh coat of paint.

Or maybe the whole thing is real, but my advice is: Don't get your hopes up. Life's too short to get worked up over things that might never happen. If it actually comes to pass, then it'll still be just as much fun whether you believed it ahead of time or not.

First Episode Of Dragon Ball DAIMA is pure nostalgic. The antagonist watch whole buu saga. Animation feels like One Piece. Overall pure nostalgic ride. MovieAnimeX rates 8 out of 10. Tell us your thoughts please.

Oh hi there, it's been a minute!

Sooo NYCC panel happened, and Dragon Ball Magic/Daima is real!

Under the read more for the links, images, and some of my thoughts, analysis, etc...

First, the name: Daima 大魔 can be translated as big magic, large sorcery, big magic trick...And that 魔 symbol should look familiar to you guys, because it's the same MA from Piccolo DAIMAo, from MA Jr., from MAkkankosappo, from MAsenko, and from MAjin (magic people/population). It's the same word used for magic, sorcery, witchcraft, and hocus pocus style stuff. So... with or without demon connotation, just supernatural magic stuff :p

Then the continuity. When does this happen? There's no DBS refs at all in it, so there's speculation about it happening before DBS (but after the Buu saga since the Buu events are the origin of the story it seems). However... Kibito and Shin are defused. Did they defuse because of the wish? Or is it happening sometime after they get defused in DBS (different versions depending on manga or anime).

We don't know. I would say: we don't care. "Canon" is a lie. Official content (games, anime, manga, movies, tv specials, one shots, promo material, etc..) tend to steal from each other and reuse whatever is interesting for the following stories. Content is recycled and reused and readapted to fit whatever narrative of the current story beat (or arc/saga if we're generous) and that's it.

Anyway let's get back to the plot:

Pretty sure these guys are Bibidi-Babidi related, and they hold a grudge against the gang because of the Buu situation (this is what they're watching).

They make a wish to make everyone young, and there's no transformations (!) so.. Goku has to use the PowerPole.

There's also a message from Toriyama himself, delivered by Iyoku:

Hello. I’m Akira Toriyama. I’m currently working on a new Dragon Ball. The Title is “Dragon Ball DAIMA”. Due to a conspiracy, Goku and his friends are turned small. In order to fix things, they’ll head off to a new world! It’s a grand adventure with intense action in an unknown and mysterious world. Since Goku has to make up for his petite size, he uses his Nyoibo to fight, something not seen in a long time. I came up with the story and settings, as well as a lot of the designs. I’m actually putting a lot more into this than usual! Things will unfold that close in on the mysteries of the Dragon Ball world. He's far more involved in this than he ever was in DBS, sooooo.. !! Who knows. It's going to be similar to his modern style though, like Dragon Quest or SandLand.

Look at Trunks and Goten! They will never age, they get CTRL-Z lol Same for Marron actually, she got back to being her Buu saga toddler self :o (note how Trunks is back at being purple, and not Blunks anymore...)

The animation looks STUNNING. However! Goku's hair looks very stiff :(

Other than that, the series started production right when Dragon Quest Dai ended: that's what the animators are transitioning from.

Nakatsuru at the character design and corrections, Aya Komaki and Yoshitaka Yashima in the direction roles. Art direction is Takahashi Kurahashi (big background artist, did Yo SonGoku a while ago), and some GOATED names for the animation: Chikashi Kubota, Naohiro Shintani, Yuya Takahashi, Takeo Ide, and Miyako Tsuji. Kubota is the guy who did the 2D section of the intro for DBSSH btw. Kubota My beloved.

Kid versions of everyone look super cute, but there was no Gohan on sight. It has to take place "after the Buu saga", but considering the designs, I do think this is kinda meant to be before Pan and Bra were born.

Also I smell Demon lore.

Much interest on my end because it looks amazing even if it's not the serious type of story I usually enjoy. But it looks so good!

Also yeah, DBS Broly and DBSSH is "let's reuse the OG Broly Trilogy", so this is let's reuse/repurpose GT?

Dragon Ball Magic thoughts

So the information leaked about the new web anime series and just wanted to share my thoughts

Skip this if you don’t want spoilers or information

But basically, it’s Goku and Supreme Kai get turned into kids ala GT by a demon and they go on an adventure to get their bodies back to normal

From what I understand art style is similar to the Super Broly movie, the demographic is more for kids meaning younger and since it’s web streaming it won't be canceled in the middle or something like that (14-15 episodes based on what I’ve seen)

So my thoughts

Idk seems fine lol

Like the contention online seems to be that they’re just taking a bad idea from GT, kid-focused makes it seem like it would be for babies, and that they’re doing this over adapting the manga super arcs seems annoying for multiple reasons

But when you actually think about it Goku being a kid in GT wasn’t that bad, just ruined people’s aesthetic of Goku being this muscle-bound adult that has kids, etc to me the weird part was that he was younger than his granddaughter in GT LOL not that he’s a kid

Manga super arcs not being adapted is weird as it feels like they’re really separating the manga and anime as more time goes on but as it’s own story I’m fine with a new original story as at least I don’t have to worry about manga spoilers or comparisons

Magic seems to be on paper a better take on getting the adventure back in dragon ball they tried with Gt and the black star dragon balls

It seems to be more about problem-solving and character than hijinks and gags but it can very well be that too LOL

For a 15-episode original thing, I’m fine with it, it’s not like it’s the first arc in a gt length story

(Funnily the black star balls arc was 22 episodes and 16 in the US so it can very well just be a modern version of that)

Seems to be a season that covers more time in the 10-year gap before End of Z

(10 year gap not confirmed but it doesn’t seem to be after the end of Z)

Any wants or expectations?

I kinda want it to be like early Hunter x Hunter, a fun adventure with some combat but some tactics in there

Would be interesting if Supreme Kai teaches Goku something as he’s been spending more time with Beerus and Whis so learning something from the other half could be cool

They’re going to do the jokes but I just hope it’s not too many “you’re small now” jokes

And I hope the villain is interesting, since it’s a demon it can have some connection to Dabura or even Mira and Towa from Xenoverse and it’s something the main material doesn’t cover all the spin-offs do

And despite the adventure focus, the show needs one good fight, people expect that out of Dragon Ball now

Rather watch this for 15 weeks vs no dragon ball so seems easy to me

But if it’s too kiddy I can see it being a negative but to me, it’s just an overall positive for the series since nothing is going on right now

Welp... Dragon Ball Magic...

There's a rumored leak of a new Dragon Ball series in the cards called "Dragon Ball Magic". So far, not really impressed and we don't really have much evidence besides a likely clickbait article with a source attribution to one YouTuber. Not even Herms or anyone who handles translation stuff.

For the moment, until more accredited info shows up, provided there is any, let's just saying I'm not buying it.

But, let's talk about the hypothetical as if this is real.

Ok, so we have a rehash of Dragon Ball GT's Kid Goku plot. I mean, I have been exploring the scenario of GT with the ripple effects of Super in play, so I can't say I'm completely opposed. But, he's not the only one turning into a kid- apparently Shin is too.

Why Shin? What scenario are they in that this happens to both of them? Two characters that are mostly outside of each others spheres? The ensuing adventure they mentioned with the demons seems like a good opening for better exploration of the concepts of demonkind, the Kais, the gods, etc. A worldbuilding opportunity if you will.

But why does Shin need to be a kid too? Where are the rest of Goku's friends in this? Does Shin even have a "child" state that would be any different then a marketing ploy to sell SD figures and keychains? He's a deity, as far as I know if we turned him back into a kid, he'd just become the magic piece of fruit again.

Who does this to them? Is this a spell backfire, a failure of the titular Dragon Ball Magic? How does this plan come to mind? At least GT's accidental wish had some backing to it as to how that specific of a scenario can happen.

And apparently it's a web series and we know how I felt about the last web series (coughs at Super Dragon Ball Heroes). So, it can be either marketing ploy, rushed, or both.

AND as proof of just how stream of consciousness this post is getting, I just Googled it as I'm typing this- the series has already been cancelled! How convenient. I'm still doubting if it was even up in the air at all. It got cancelled within 24 hours of you revealing it, right when people weren't believing it. For all we know, this supposed "cancellation" was just something to cover their behind instead of just admitting they lied and made it up.

Even so, let's just say...

...We're not getting to Planet Sadala at this rate.
