I want to be the newtrek positivity guy I really do but a bunch of the shows have stuff that really grinds my gears. but I feel obligated to defend them because they’re getting criticism for non-issues (Having a black female captain?! having…a child demographic?!?) so then when I criticize them (which is something that can and should be done for any piece of media!) it feels like I’m hating it the way dudebros hate it, which I’m not and they’re hating it wrong

unsolicited take but maybe star trek really does need to just stick to animation from now on? i feel like the live action newtrek shows problems almost all would be obsolete in animation, also afaik lower decks and prodigy are the best current star trek shows so idk <3

weird how “character only goes by last name” is like such a common trope for fictional men.  columbo, schnyder in one day at a time, schmidt in the new girl, one of the teens from teen wolf (i didn’t watch it but you know the one i’m talking about.  the teen who was not also a wolf)

whereas women with no first name feels v antiquated because they’re all married women.  Lady MacBeth, Curly’s wife (from of mice and men), Princess Bubblegum went a weirdly long time before we found out her first name was Bonnibelle.  Her horse, Lady Rainicorn, seemed to have had the first name of Lady (her boyfriend, Jake the Dog, called her that a lot) but who knows, lots of people go by their title (I’ve only seen most of one episode but Columbo seems to be called lieutenant more often than columbo).  I know it was a big deal when NewTrek gave Uhura a first name but I also don’t know the first name of anyone in Star Trek except for Kirk.  And I guess Uhura.  But that’s also a military setting so I guess it makes more sense

im so sorry it took me so long to reply to this but i wanted to sit down and really think about it skskkfds. the unfortunate thing about disco is that you kinda have to watch it all to understand whats happening (unless you just read up on the eps i suppose?) and youd probably miss some cute interactions between the crew 😔 also tyyy for loving my blog and art <3 ANYWAYS here are the ones i personally like sjkdkj

in season 1, e2: battle at the binary stars, e3: context is for kings, and e6: lethe

in season 2, e4: an obol for charon, e5: saints of imperfection, and e8: if memory serves

and in season 3, e13: unification iii

these arent the only ones i like but theyre the ones i would recommend lol anyways newtrek PLEASE just give us some silly filler episodes and stop slamming us with plotline after plotline

I haven't watched Discovery, Picard, or Lower Decks but I'm afraid to do so. I have heard time and time again that the show runners don't understand what it is that makes Star Trek good in the first place, and thus, I fear what that implies about me if I end up enjoying the new shows. I don't like the idea that everything I think about a series is wrong, so how should I approach the shows at this point?

As a fellow ‘haven’t watched NewTrek’, I would say there’s two broad possibilities.  Walk in thinking of it as any other show, or walk in thinking of it as a Star Trek show.  And which one works better will probably vary pretty wildly depending on the individual.

the chase from tng would make a great newtrek film... its like an exciting archaeology/science mystery adventure with a hopeful & human moral about unity and peace... could mix it with gambit for some fun undercover stuff too... idk ep made me cry so what can i say
