Newsie Cosplay WIP

I am currently working on a Newsies cosplay (is not Kathrine-specific) that is heavily inspired by Kathrine's KONY look from TUT's Newsies production. I saw the pants, bodice/corset look, and I got so excited. I've sewn corsets in the past. I couldn't tell from references online if it was just a bodice or corset, so I opted to do a corset.

The process you're about to see is some of the work I did to create the Newboy hat that I made. You'll also see my mockup for the corset. The fabric you'll see is NOT the final fabric.

First, I wanna show some of the process of how I made my Newsboy hat!

You can kind of see the inside of the hat here. I essentially made a tapered diamond shape that I sewed together (two layers of fabric so it would be stiffer). the outside fabric is from a pair of overalls that didn't fit me anymore!

This was me sewing the brim of the hat, which I basically just made a sock for. I then turned the hat inside out, put the brim piece inside, and sewed that to the inside of the hat.

This was the finished product!

Now onto the corset! The shape and overall pattern were inspired by TUT's Kathrine KONY costume! (I'm actually so in love with it).

This was actually so perfect because I was feeling very uninspired by cosplay. my hyperfiction has been newsies for about 6ish months now. I didn't think I was gonna do any Newsie cosplays until I saw SuddenlyCampbell's (that's their TikTok) Newsie ballgown/dress they made. I literally saw this cosplay, and my brain shut off.

I absolutely fell in love with the patchwork technique they used. I knew I wanted to make something similar.

These photos were just some of the references I used when patterning the corset as well as working and editing a pattern I bought. When I was patterning, I got very particular with how I wanted this to look, so I went through about 3 different pattern iterations before deciding.

This is the final shape, as well as where I placed the bones.

After I figured out where I wanted the bone, I sewed in my boning channels and my waistband on the side. I then cut out my corset pattern again in a tightly woven fabric that doesn't stretch and a thinner red fabric on top (these are not my final fabrics. The final fabric will use the patchwork technique seen above in the newsies dress. this also will apply to the trousers I will be making, similar to the ones Kathrine is wearing in the reference photos); sewed them together, put the outside that I had just made on my muslin inside, and sewed along the edge. I then sewed along the edge again with ribbon (I have a crazy amount of ribbon, and it's also hiding my mistakes).

The collared shirt, which I will be doing in Jack Kelly blue, to reference Livsies. Something I really love about the costume work in Livsies is the use of mixing patterns, but them being subtle enough, they don't clash and look ugly. my dream for the shirt is to get custom fabric and use a deep enough blue with black newsprint text ontop. From afar, it'll look more muddled but, looking closer, you'll see its newsprint.

I hope people think this post was interesting. I love talking about cosplay and the costumes I'm making, so I thought this was a fun post. it's also nice to post my plans somewhere so I can hold myself to the project.

Hey, I'm a huge fan of thinking of Crutchie as Jewish. But do you have a citation for the historical Crutch Morris being Jewish. Or are you basing this on Marty Belafsky?

Based on history! We don’t have one exacting citation, but a common hypothesis based on the pieces of citable information we do have.

The most conclusive simply being the fact that the overwhelming majority of people named Morris, a very Jewish name originating from Moshe, are themselves; especially given the time and place in history, when 40% of newsies who answered the 1901 NYC census were Jewish and there weren’t abundant legal or marital ways for a man’s name to be changed in the usa like there are today. Could this have been a false name like Jack Kelly or Blink? Of course, (though I doubt he would have recorded a false name when he was an elected official of the newsboy union) so, as with all other information, this has to be taken with a grain of salt.

We also have one photograph that is commonly associated to be Crutch Morris that many past historians have made the presumption from:

This photo is commonly MIS-ASSOCIATED with Louis Hines’ work documenting New York’s working children in the 1930s. THIS IS INCORRECT. It appears nowhere in his published work. So much as a reverse image search tells us this is actually an undated photograph from the New York Historical Society Archive. @newsieshistory (their presence here is greatly missed) was able to match up the windows in the background to those on the Duane Street Newsboy Lodging House (the actual lodge house the one in the film is based on, where Kid Blink, Crutch Morris, Dutch[y] Johnson, [Swifty] the Rake, Bumlets, Snoddy, Pie Eater, Snipeshooter, among others really lived according to both articles on the strike and nyc census records), while it was operating as a newsboy lodge house, sometime c. 1890-1920. This could be another newsie that lived there during those years meeting the description of Crutch from the rally article, but its as close to a known photo as exists.

I am certain there is more, but I’m currently in the process of moving my historical documents out of google drive to fight the ai so I do not currently have access to my archive, I will attempt to add more tomorrow.

no, he’s not a mouse. He’s a northern short tail shrew, and quick psa, even though they LOOK harmless and cute, they are actually venomous and extremely territorial. Basically, don’t walk up to one and try to be all Disney princess, because chances are it WILL bite and it will send you to the hospital, and if you see one nearby your house, try to relocate it via calling wildlife centers.

with all of that aside, this guy probably wouldn’t even hurt a fly. Maybe a spider though.

Introduction🤪

Hi hello! I wanted to make this post bc I’ve been wanting to start a new blog for a minute now soooo I figured why not start with an intro post.

(I’ll update this again with tags and such once I really get going with this blog)

Online I go by Panda, I’m 23. I’m nonbinary and my pronouns are he/they.

I’ve been on and off Tumblr since about 2011, but this is my first time making a blog dedicated to something and actually posting on it. The last time I made a fan page was on Facebook around 2012.

My fanfiction phase restarted early last year, so naturally I’m back on Tumblr again🥴 bear with me, I’m a little rusty.

Severe ADHD makes it to where I have loads of hyperfixations going at once, and I need somewhere to dump my thoughts other than my friends’ DMs😅

That being said, this blog will strictly be for posting about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare ONLY. There might be a couple reblogs from my other fandoms here and there, but I’m gonna try to keep that to a minimum.

Tag Team Tournament - Scoring Updates

Now, as anyone who played in the Tag Team Tournament in 2023 could tell you, some of our original scoring methods got pretty solidly exploited last year. What happened was that during our first year, we wanted to encourage artists to join the Tournament, which they did, and they were amazing! However, once we started getting more art, and more comics in particular, it became clear that our scores were broken.

So, after last year, we took some time to re-evaluate our scoring, and we made some changes to ensure that things were more fair and less susceptible to point grabbing. We also added a few new bonuses that we hope will help encourage creation and collaboration.

Those of you who read our Event Guide Document will already know about all of these changes, but just in case you missed it, or if you weren't sure which items changed from last year, all of our changes are below the cut.

Submission Scoring Changes

Visual Art:

Sketches will be awarded 5 points.

Line art will be awarded an additional 5 points, for a total of 10 points. 

Flat color will be awarded an additional 5 points, for a total of 15 points. 

Shading or rendering will be awarded an additional 5 points, for a total of 20 points. 

Visual Art must be clearly related to Maribat and to the characters on your team in order to be scored, and that connection must be able to stand on its own, even if it’s a companion piece to another Maribat work.

Comic: Visual Art score multiplied by two. This is a flat score, which will not be increased by adding panels. 

Incorrect Quote: 1 point

Headcanon: 3 points

Mood Board: 5 points

Note: All images included in a mood board must be sourced with permission of their original creators. Do not use other people’s art or photographs without their permission. If you use photographs, please check the license they were published under before using them. Comic panels or screenshots from DC or MLB can be used with sourcing.

Free Stock Photo Library Websites: Pexels, Unsplash, Pixabay. If you know of any other free stock photo websites feel free to share them with Mod Newsie.

Animated mood boards will earn 1 additional point.

Edit: 

Edits which are still flat images will earn 5 points.

Edits which use animated scenes will earn 10 points.

AMVs (animated music videos) will earn 15 points.

Bonus Point Changes

Prompt Bonus:

A prompt will be scheduled for every day throughout the event. If a creation fulfills the prompts on their assigned day (marked by 24 hour periods beginning and ending at midnight EST), it will be awarded 3 extra points. If it is used before or after the assigned day, it will earn 1 extra point. Prompts cannot be stacked for multiple bonuses until the final day of the tournament.

To fulfill a prompt, you must use the prompt phrase in your creation, have it make sense in the context of your creation, and the mods must be able to find it. 

You can add on to the phrase, either before or after, but if you want to add words within the phrase you may only break it up once. You may change certain aspects of the prompt to suit your creation: punctuation, pronouns, emphasis, plurality, and verb tense can all be changed. However, all words (or some form of them) must be used. 

If you are drawing, you may use the prompt in the description of your art instead of adding a speech bubble to the art itself, but it must be clearly tied into art itself as something the characters are saying or doing.

If your use of a prompt may not be immediately obvious, make sure to leave the mods a note about how to find it when you submit. (Ex: A poem where the first letter of each line spells out a prompt).

Teamwork Bonus:

Last year we noticed a lot of folks working together or creating based on what other players had made, and we loved seeing that! As such, we have a few new bonuses that you can earn when you work with others.

Companion Piece Bonus: If your creation is a companion to another Maribat work made by someone else, you will get 1 bonus point. If the other work is another submission for this year’s TTT, you will get 3 bonus points. Make sure that you add a link to the work that inspired you in your submission.

Collaborator Bonus: If you collaborate with another creator to make one submission, you will receive 5 bonus points. Make sure that both of your screen names are listed on the form when you submit.

Playlist Points:

This year, every team will have a playlist published on Spotify (and linked in the Teams section of this document). At the end of the event, our Mods will tally up the number of saves each playlist has. Every team except for whichever team is in first before these points are added will receive bonus points for every save. If the teams are tied, as happened in our 2022 Tournament, then all the tied teams will receive points for their saves. Our scores can get very close, so saving a team playlist could very well be the difference between first and second place.

Moderator’s Discretion:

Each mod has 35 points that can be awarded to submissions throughout the competition as a bonus. Each submission can only get a max of 5 extra points from a single mod.

People are now watching the screen even more actively, laughing each time a new silly photo arrives in the stream of genuine submissions. Moo submits a photo of a dented Pringles can seen through a grate in the street outside and a photo of a bag of road-salting ice. The photo of the groom at the table is edited so that he sports a towering Cat-in-the-Hat hat instead of the newsie cap; the groom is edited into an astronaut suit on the moon; he and the bride wearing her fur stole are edited as Jackie O. and JFK in the limo (this last The Editor wisely did not upload but sent only to me).

Not content, however, with editing the groom into non-wedding photos or with sabotaging earnest submissions to the photo album, The Editor proceeds to bring us full circle by reappropriating Moo's recontextualisations, Sherrie Levine-like:

[ID: 1. the photo of the garbage can from earlier, with the groom edited onto the flap that you push garbage through; 2. the groom edited into the photo of the framed photograph from earlier; he has been made greyscale to match the photograph; 3. the photo of the urinal from above, with the groom edited into its bowl. end ID]

The people at Moo’s table (groom’s family) love this last submission ("Urine a Urinal," Anonymous, iPhone camera, 2023). They watch the screen waiting for it to come up again, and when it does, they shout “there it is!” and laugh and clap.

Alas, our destabilisation of what constitutes artistic merit was not allowed to persist. Like the Society of Independent Artists sticking Duchamp’s “Fountain” behind a partition, the bride and groom silently deleted all of the unworthy submissions from the publicly shared album. Luckily, I saw this coming and was able to document the proceedings.

In conclusion, I recommend not crowdsourcing your wedding photos unless you have a very well-developed sense of humour.

So my mother recently got married (mashallah). And she set up this thing where guests were encouraged to take photos of the proceedings on their phones and text them in to a given number, after which they would be played as a slideshow on a screen at the front of the venue. I want you to take a minute to imagine how this went.
