Jack: *Jack has now put his arms around Crutchie's shoulders, draping himself entirely over him.* "Close your eyes, come with me, where it's clean and green and pretty." *Crutchie in fact does close his eyes, but Jack waves a hand Infront of them just to make sure.*

Jack: Being gay is a constant battle between: "I wish to sit on a window bench with my lover, our legs tangling as we listen to the birds" and "Hey, let's go throw rocks at fascists", and I think that's very sexy of us.
Davey: If the window's open and you time it right, you can do both.

when jack and davey meet they both know who they are with too much certainty for boys so young. jack is strong and charismatic and unshakeable because if he is anything else he's letting people down. davey is smart and level-headed and analytical because if he's anything else he's letting people down. they know who they are.
when jack and davey meet they each know who the other is, too, with the confidence of boys too young to have quite figured out how to get inside somebody else's shoes. jack knows davey is soft and worried and afraid to step on anybody's toes, jack knows davey is spoiled to have a family and a bed to go back to that he doesn't have to earn every night, jack knows davey has no idea what it's like out here. and davey knows jack is brash and loud and hiding something, davey knows jack is impulsive and prone to jump head first into stupidity, davey knows jack will never understand what it's like to be the one working to keep a family fed and housed.
but when jack and davey meet, that certainty starts to unravel because maybe they hadn't figured out how to get inside somebody else's shoes, but it's hard to avoid it when everything falls apart all at once. jack starts to see how the soles of davey's shoes that look so neat and new are just as worn and patched with cardboard as jack's own boots, jack starts to see how davey counts every penny three times and skips lunch if he comes up short, jack starts to see that davey isn't quiet and scared to step on people's toes at all, he just chooses his battles and knows when it's smarter to pick up and run. and davey starts to see that jack is fighting for all of his boys more than he's ever fought for himself, davey starts to see that jack isn't loud and friendly just because he wants to be but because it's what makes people listen to him, davey starts to see that jack is thinking so hard about everything he does because he has dozens of kids looking at him for what to do next.
and when jack and davey meet, it doesn't take long for either them to figure out that the other has weaponized the things they thought were flaws at first. jack understands that davey holds himself back but knows exactly what to say in exactly the right moment, and being quiet is what makes that work. davey understands that brash, confident, over-excited words can turn a crowd into a team into a victory. jack understands that davey is bent over under the weight of the world the same as him, and that both of their worlds revolve around the people they love. davey understands that when jack turns away and takes a deep breath and hopes nobody notices the way his hands shake when things start to go south, it's the same emotion that rises like bile in davey's throat every day he goes home with nothing to show his parents.
and when jack and davey meet, the confidence and certainty that were keeping them constrained in the boxes they'd built for themselves on the framework of their childhoods, it starts to fall away. and it's terrifying, of course it is, for both of them. to realize that they no longer know exactly who they are. for jack to realize maybe he doesn't want to run away and make it on his own, maybe he doesn't want to build a new and unfamiliar life in an unfamiliar place, maybe he just wants to love the family he made for himself exactly how he loves them and everything will be okay because he loves them. for davey to realize that maybe he doesn't want to spend his life living for other people, maybe he wants the chance to do something selfish once in a while, maybe he wants to love his family but love himself just as much and everything will be okay because the love will always be there.
so when jack and davey meet, they pick up the pieces the other leaves behind. jack is smart, jack loves learning, jack loves stories and talking to people and he's strong and charismatic but not unshakeable and he's all of those things most especially when he's lying on his back on a rooftop in august admitting out loud that he'd known all along he wasn't running to santa fe, he was running away from everything here because it felt like too much. davey is loud and opinionated and a little bit mean, and he's smart and analytical but not always so level-headed and he's all of those things most especially when he's watching jack draw and teasing him for the mistakes he makes and not thinking at all about what his mother must be thinking right now because he's allowed to stay out late and be happy like this even if it doesn't make things better for everyone else.
when jack and davey meet, their rough edges click into place around each other and they suddenly understand: oh. this is how it's meant to be. this is how I could be. this is how we should be. this is how we will be. and this is good.

"How obsessed with Newsies were you?" Glad you asked! (no one asked, I'm just bored) My grandparents had to deal with me playing the soundtrack on repeat for weeks, my mother got me multiple books on the actual strike from the library, I watched and re-watched the 1992 movie and the musical multiple times, I wrote at least three papers on it for school, made a video on it for my video production class, I have the Wikipedia page for the strike saved in my bookmarks bar, I can tell you all kinds of random facts about the musical, I can tell you which characters are based on real people/a combination of multiple real people, and my dad once banished me from turning on the musical for a few months because he got tired of watching it almost everyday.

Race: Remember when you told me not to burn down the lodgehouse?
Jack: You burned down the lodgehouse?
Race: No, I had the fire out almost immediately
Race: This is a success story
