Debunking: Plurality in Transgender Mental Health (2018)
Cross-posting this solid debunking of an oft-cited section about plurality. Most of the images speak for themselves, but I'll add in occasionally to explain further.
The first section defines being plural as "Having two or more people existing in one body or space" (Yarbrough, 2018). The highlighted sections on plurality have no source - these are unsubstantiated claims that contradict the scientific general consensus and research on how systems form, leaving the reader unable to determine whether the information came from a legitimate/reputable source or not. As it is now, the fact that the sections about plurality have no source seems to imply that the author couldn't find a legitimate source with their definition of plurality, instead fabricating explanations.
The majority of this page describes someone who has been repeatedly traumatized as an example for explaining plurality. In context, this actually makes the argument against their claim stronger - if this is the only case study provided, it implies the only sources the author found to support their claim here are trauma-related - inadvertently strengthening the claim that systems can't form without trauma.
The information about open and closed systems, fronting and blending, and headspaces does have a source, but upon investigation, the original source doesn't have a source; the only information we have about the author is the note that the page was "Written by E of NS," who is not listed anywhere on the site (E of N.S). Where is all this information coming from? Who is E of NS? It is possible that some of what's written is accurate, but the fact that so much of the original source makes claims without citing any sources, and that we know nothing about the author but their initials, this source cannot be called a credible one.
This entire section makes claims about plurality that directly contradicts the body of existing research (see Dorahy et al., 2014 and Dell & O'Neil, 2009, but there are more) with no sources to support what they're saying. I cannot call this reliable or legitimate information if large sections are fictitious.
As shown above, all of these references either pertain to dissociative disorders or are not legitimate sources as is evident in previous sections. Of note to me is that the author's specialties don't include DID, multiplicity, or trauma.
I hope that this breakdown helps explain why the section on plurality in Transgender Mental Health has a lot of illegitimacy and should thus not be cited as a reliable or accurate source.

I just listened to the song and I am crying, it's so good. Last week, I was going to send in an ask, asking WHY did BG stay so long in such awful relationships, and do they know why now, and can you believe G already answered this week??? (hoping B will do the same eventually)
One of my favorite lines (but I love them all):
Narcissistic, semi-psychotic,
so manipulated, I bought it,
every time,
but not this time.
You gaslit my world, it was burning Had to leave before it stopped turning
So happy I can cry 'cause you're not mine
Also, this line makes me laugh so hard:
You're somebody else's (Somebody else's) And I pray for them whoever they are LOOOOOL
==============
I am just so happy for her that she sees what it was now. Also, why were the Genius people unable to decipher the best lines???? lol
ps: can everyone please download TunnelBear, and set it to New Zealand, and listen to SE on G's YT channel, so we can talk about this all day?
Those lyrics describe GR perfectly. 😳

How to Identify Morels
Originally posted at my website at https://rebeccalexa.com/how-to-identify-morels/ - Click here to learn more about the How to Identify article series.
Name: True morels (Morchella spp.)
Range and typical habitat(s): Widespread throughout temperate North America, Europe, New Zealand and Australia; less commonly reported in South America, Asia, and coastal Africa. Morels are commonly found in wooded areas, and many species grow primarily on soil; these may have symbiotic (though not necessarily mycorrhizal) relationships with trees and other plants. Other morels, such as M. importuna, are saprotrophs that happily colonize dead wood, to include mulch used in landscaping. At least one, the white morel M. rufobrunnea, may be capable of both lifestyles. Morels are exceptionally difficult to cultivate, and no large-scale cultivation method has been developed as of this writing.
M. americana
Both deciduous and conifer forests may be homes to morels; yellow morels tend toward deciduous, while conifer forests are more likely to feature black morels. A wide variety of tree genera may be associated with morels include but are not limited to Pseudotsuga, Pinus, Abies, Quercus, Fraxinus, Alnus, and Castanea.
However, the half-free morels–M. punctipes (seen below), M. populiphila, and M. semilibera–may have a small space between the bottom edge of the cap and the stipe. The cap has a honeycombed appearance, with surfaces deeply pockmarked with cavities surrounded by brittle ridges that crumble into fragments when crushed. Colors vary, and morel species are often grouped together by cap color; black morels have a dark brown to black cap, while yellow and white morels are more tan to cream.
M. punctipes, cut in half to show hollow centers, and only the upper portion of the caps attached to the stipes. Photo by Chase G. Mayers, CCA-4.0
The stipe may be lightly textured, and is usually lighter in color than the cap, often white, cream, or pale yellow depending on species. Cutting a morel’s stipe open reveals that it is entirely hollow inside. A mature morel is generally around three to six inches high, though larger specimens have been found.
M. americana with the top removed, showing the hollow interior.
The stipe may be lightly textured, and is usually lighter in color than the cap, often white, cream, or pale yellow depending on species. Cutting a morel’s stipe open reveals that it is entirely hollow inside. A mature morel is generally around three to six inches high, though larger specimens have been found.
A vintage illustration shows three morels, to include one cut in half to display the hollow center; the mushroom in the lower left is a false morel (Gyromitra esculenta).
Other organisms it could be confused with and how to tell the difference: There are multiple groups of mushrooms that look similar enough to morels to cause confusion; given morels are a popular edible mushroom, consumption of some of these lookalikes has caused serious illness on numerous occasions.
V. bohemica; note that the bottom edge of the cap is not attached to the stipe, and that it has more of a wrinkled appearance than honeycombed. By NeoSporen, CCA-SA-3.0.
Members of the genus Verpa look similar to half-free morels in that the bottom edge of the cap is not attached to the stipe. However, when cut in half the half-free morels have more of the upper portion of the cap attached to the stipe; Verpas only have the very tip attached. Outwardly they do look quite similar to morels overall, often having a conical cap with a honeycombed texture; some may have less distinct cavities and a more “lumpy” appearance rather than honeycombed. The cap of the Verpa is generally smaller in proportion to the stipe than on mature morels. The stipes of young Verpas are full of soft, fluffy hyphae, but they become hollow like morels as they mature.
V. conica, showing one cut in half. Note that the cap is only attached to the stipe at the very top, and there is still some fungal hyphae tissue in the center of the stipe. Photo by Jeff Riedenauer (Tamsenite), CCA-SA-3.0.
Like morels, they are considered by some to be edible when thoroughly cooked. However, one study purports that V. bohemica is also toxic, having the same sort of toxins as the false morels I’ll discuss below. Some field guides recommend avoiding the other Verpa species as well due to potential inedibility. Both Verpas and morels fruit in spring, and may sometimes be found in the same area. As someone who would like to become an old, rather than bold, mushroom hunter, I recommend skipping the Verpas and sticking to the true morels, just in case.
A false morel (Gyromitra spp.); notice that instead of looking like a cone made of honeycomb, it resembles a raisin or a brain on a stalk.
False morels, in the genus Gyromitra, are a more notorious morel lookalike. Several species contain significant levels of gyromitrin, a compound that when boiled or consumed hydrolizes into monomethylhydrazine, a chemical used in making rocket fuel. Consumption may cause gastrointestinal distress, neurological symptoms, kidney and liver failure, coma, and failure of the respiratory and circulatory systems. The most severe cases result in death within a week after consuming false morels. Some species have more gyromitrin than others, and it’s likely that the compound can build up over time in people who eat false morels on a regular basis. While there are purported methods used to reduce or remove gyromitrin from false morels, as a foraging instructor I do not recommend consuming any Gyromitra false morels due to the risk of severe illness.
G. californica. Note that the stipe is not completely hollow inside, but has several cavities divided by fungal tissue. Photo by Alan Rockefeller, CCA-SA-4.0.
So how do you tell the difference? Where true morels look like honeycombed cones, false morels look like brains, oversized raisins, or piles of worms. If you cut a true morel open the stipe will be completely hollow, but the interior of a false morel may have multiple smaller chambers or be completely solid. It is exceptionally important to make sure you get a sure identification on whatever species you are picking, as true and false morels fruit in spring, and sometimes in the same areas.
M. angusticeps
Anything else worth mentioning? Morels are definitely one of those mushrooms you want to cook thoroughly before eating, as raw or undercooked morels can cause gastrointestinal distress. Also, if you hang around mushroom foragers long enough, you’ll hear all sorts of advice–some of it conflicting–about when and where to find morels. It’s true that they fruit in spring, starting in lower elevations where it warms up sooner, and then higher elevations as spring temperatures continue to rise. South-facing slopes that warm up faster with sunlight may also see earlier fruiting. And, of course, places that burned or were logged in the last year or two may see a bumper crop of morels the following spring. Many patches of morel mycelium only last a few years, so the place you found morels one year may not fruit the next.
Beyond that, it’s best to study up on the species of morel that grow in your area. Find out what sorts of habitats they like, if they’re associated with any particular trees, whether they are responsive to burns and other disturbances, and whether there are any toxic look-alikes that grow nearby.

can u explain about the european tour leg being a mess? i didn't happen to hear about any of that and now i'm curious
how did you miss that? i wish that were me.
i'm gonna try to pull it out of my fish memory:
added 2nd shows were either canceled (Copenhagen) or almost empty with even m&g tickets available (Amsterdam and Helsinki);
no promo for the added shows right till the last moment. and that promo was off-brand (@ marketing team of this tour, see you in hell, bitches);
huge communication drama with the Dutch promoter. basically one of us (aka the audience) wanted to do a project with colored papers but the promoter's manager was super against it. and the shittiest part was that, apparently, even Dan's team and managers were unable to help while being on board with Juul. this promoter also lied about Dan not liking our projects?!?? i think it was him, don't 100% remember. but i LOVE when promoters damage the public image of their clients (i would ask to not bring too much attention to it again. i'm giving a link to credit the ogs, that's it);
no updates on sold out shows. they were advertised like they still had tickets. which is a misleading advertisement;
Iceland cancelation. it looked like we found out about it before Dan. it was an experience™;
1st European show aka Warsaw didn't have a full range of merch. it's an added show so i guess they didn't prepare for it;
Belfast show. half empty, and no pre-show despite technically being a part of the UK leg. Dan and his team found out about it last minute. again, the communication between promoters and Dan's team is non-existent.
some of these issues applied to other legs as well. mostly poor marketing and communication problems when something was going wrong (weather in New Zealand, changes of venues in the US, cancelations in general). it's just, the European leg was the last one, you would think with experience it would be easier. but no. i'm sure i forgot something, i tagged the whole leg as #wad.europe if you wanna check :)
#belfast also had questionable remarks coming from dan#off script#but that's about the show not tour so whatever#answered#wad.europe

Okay so when coming up with the pre-resurrection names I feel like people forget that the primary action is ostensibly at least several decades after the present, if not more--they're building instillations and uranus, saturn, and I think jupiter is also mentioned, which means that they have to have at least a few people set up out there, and the cryo project is using some kind of theoretical physicals time wormhole thing, which means in this world theoretical time fuckery physics has become concrete enough to move into the realm of engineering. So people give them names that would be popular for people in their 30s currently, when really it would be more accurate to assume their names are ones that are popular now. So here are my submissions, based on New Zealand and Australian name data over the past five years (and British for C).
M- Mia
A- Alexander
A2- Archie (this has been in the Australia/New Zealand top 20 for a while and it is now canon to me)
C- Charlotte
N- Natalie (surprisingly there hasn't been an N name in the top 100 for the past decade in Australia/New Zealand, but it's my name and I support her capes and eyeliner so I'm going with it)
Cristabel- Christina or Catherine (once again, not in the top 100 but I'm assuming she changed her name when she became a nun)
P- Phoebe (Paige and Poppy were higher but I don't like either of them for her) (also it's in the top 100 and it's greek, so aesthetic)
G- George
SEE, I actually think that they were all born in the 90s. The timeline doesn't match completely (yeah the space installation, the earth population being 10 billion and plus) BUT John mentions going for underage drinking at a festival that was held up to 2014; from that I'm vaguely putting the NtN backstory chapters in the mid-2030s.
(Anyway I love all these names keep them coming!)

i read like, a sentence of the inside cover synopsis, saw the phrases "woke up in someone else's body" and "goes to school" and decided i should really just experience this info through the book
i'm also noticing that the page that lists the books in the series lists this one as Nona the Ninth, which is interesting and probably has to do with like... Nona being in a place separate from that Ninth role that Gideon and Harrow were, in a cultural and regional sense.
bruh the dramatis personae guest list starts with "Dogs to invite to birthday party" this book is gonna SLAP i'm also gonna skip reading this for now until i get a few chapters into the book
also a new poem at the start but imma be honest i'm not a huge poetry analyzer so i'm just gonna move on
damn this isn't even a prologue tf is this bible verse kinda title
damn that's crazy new zealand is real (most fictional universes, even those set on earth, remove nz from canon)
A? M? C? Augustine? Mercymorn? Cytherea?
G? Gideon?
hmmm. harrow talking to john, in a dream? very confusing, very hard to interpret, lots of things this could be. not sure this series confirmed before now that it was a post-earth world (probably implied it at some point or another) but i wonder how directly that stuff is gonna matter now. seems like john and friends led an effort for an earth evacuation. shit went bananas somehow. but what is really going on?
someday this will be less confusing.

Nona the Ninth, Guest List and John 20:8
(Curious what I'm doing here? Read this post! For detail on The Locked Tomb coverage and the index, read this one! Like what you see? Send me a Ko-Fi.)
No chapter icon for either, but both have lots to talk about.
Dramatis Personae Guest List, as dictated by Nona and transcribed by "C. Hect"(1)
Dogs. Nona LOVES dogs. She wants all the dogs she knows at her party. She also wants all the members of the gang there, with all their unfamiliar names. There's also a teacher she calls The Angel she'd like to invite.
The Blood of Eden members are where this list starts to get interesting. "Crown Him with Many Crowns"(2) is shot down by Cam in notes, and "the Captain"(3) is "Not possible". Cell/Wing Commander We Suffer and We Suffer(4) is another flat no from Cam.
And of course, Nona's three guardians.
This is followed by the Houses poem, once more, in full.(5) Then, a new poem. Without saying anything too specific, I'd just suggest coming back to this every once in a while in the book. Since hopefully you've already read the John prologue-introduction before reading my notes, you might have an idea of why this might continue to be important throughout. Still, in a surface-level interpretation, it's a poem from someone being asked to sleep a while and leave another person to their revenge quest. This may sound familiar. Alecto and John, of course.
You held aloft the sword. I still love y
Then, onward, into John 20:8(6) which I think it's fair to assume is John and... well, if the last line is right, Harrowhark.
In the dream, he told her the words about where he took his degrees, his postdoc, his research fellowship. They were his noise and not really for consumption. More like meditation; like even his mouth knew the pointlessness of it, and just wanted to recite. Dilworth. Otago. Auckland. Overseas to Corpus. (She likes the word corpus; it sounds nice and fat.) Then another year abroad, where he got the grant and met the men who would make things happen. Special pleading with the New Zealand government and Asia-Pacific Environmental, at his suggestion, then back to the facility outside Greytown. They mocked it up to look like a freezing works. We all thought that was funny, he said.
He said: We just wanted to save you. You were so sick.(7)
Early on, the team was just A- and M-.(8) M- as a medical professional, A- "because he was the glycerol-6 genius." He also handles the shareholders for John, who still hates meetings.
C-(9) was brought in by the executives of the funding, as oversight, but she was on their side within a year.
Until the last year, there was every sign that the funders would see the project through. John wanted to be sure no one of the eleven billion was left behind.(10) When the funders started constructing other ships, John was told it was nothing, just some exploratory stuff. He even loaned them G-(11) for his expertise. M- didn't like it, but John said she shouldn't get too paranoid. This is how everyone can get out, and the trillionaires will go where the real exit is.
When the funders call to say the project has been cancelled, M- reminds him of this statement.
The two are sitting on a beach, with a fire he made from driftwood. The ash still falls, and makes them sick for a little while.
Anything that hurt them only ever hurt them for a little while.
She's sitting next to a pile of meat, for when they get hungry, which always happens at the same time.(11)
John continues that the worst part is that M- and A- cried in each other's arms, they were so scared, and John couldn't do anything about it.
He and she sit in the quiet for a while.
She prompted: So what did you do? He said: A damned thing, didn’t I. She said: When is the part where you hurt me?(12) He said: Soon. It’s coming up. She said: I still love you. And in the dream he rubbed his temple with his thumb and said: “You always say that, Harrowhark.”(13)
=====
(1) Camilla, naturally. (2) A hymn from 1851. Expect a lot of this sort of name. (3) Funny that the Captain has no other given name, no song or poem fragment. Even We Suffer gets a partial name. Do we know a captain with no historical document linked name in the BOE? (Sort of… if you squint and think Judith might have gone over after we last saw her in HtN) This also might recontextualize Crown's name if you think about it. (4) "We Suffer and We Suffer", now that we have a little more of the name we first learned in As Yet Unsent to contextualize, is a quote from Agamemnon, a play by Aeschylus from about 458 BCE. In a slightly fuller context, it's a line about how it is impossible to know the future, we must suffer the present and learn what's to come when it's time for it to happen. How very fitting of such an enigmatic character so far. (5) I also feel it's worth noting, this time, how the Lyctors are split into a trinary. His Lyctors, his Saints, his Hands. We saw them use all three in HtN. (6) Positioning this as a Bible verse is pretty clever of Muir. Since she's shown a preference for the DRB translation, here's John 20:8 "Then that other disciple also went in, who came first to the sepulchre: and he saw, and believed." However, it's also important to note that the numbers on this chapter can correspond to letters: TH. I think the duality is important. If this is your first read, I do not recommend looking at the table of contents in the ebook until the end. I'll keep you up on what all these chapter numbers are indicating as we get to them, promise. (7) Save who? Harrowhark? He couldn't have known her back then. And why would a cryogenic facility save anyone? (8) Augustine and Mercymorn? They were the first two to serve, and Mercy does have medical aptitude as we know her later/in the present. Only, why would John be using initials for his friends? (9) From context, Cassiopeia, founder of the Sixth, would have had the book-smarts for this, and was the Fourth Saint which tracks with being brought in earlyish in whatever this project is, though none of this project tracks with what we were told of the origins of the Nine Houses. (10) G1deon? Likely, as again, Third Saint. (11) It's a dream, so you shouldn't need to get hungry, but dream logic can also depend on what you expect to happen. Simultaneous hunger suggests a deeper link between these two people though. (12) How did John hurt whoever he was trying to save? (13) And here, now, why would Harrow be in a dream with John, how could she have been the one he saved? Or is something odd about this dream, too...

Lewis Fic Recs: Blue Christmas
Injury, loneliness, and existential flu. Christmas stories with a flavor of melancholy and hurt/comfort. As usual, this list is far from exhaustive so feel free to add your own favs!
Keeping Company (series) by wendymr
8,000 Words, James/Robbie, Rated G, No Archive Warnings Apply Over the years, Robbie and James are each other's fallback date when other Christmas plans fall through—until they realize they're something more. Lewis is especially breathtaking in the first section, with his casual-but-frighteningly competent protective mode after James is injured while working under a different inspector.
Through the years we all will stay together by serenbach
3,834 Words,James/Robbie, Rated T, No Archive Warnings Apply Robbie and James spend Christmas together through the years. A look at how their friendship slowly develops into something more through quiet pints at the pub, dreary days spent at crime scenes, injury, and eventually the ordeal of cooking Christmas dinner together for the family.
Christmas Capers in Ringstead (series) by divingforstones, wendymr
13,291 Words,James/Robbie, Rated G, No Archive Warnings Apply After Robbie orders him to go away somewhere nice for Christmas, James ends up injured preventing a mugging and Robbie goes to keep him company. The first fic does a great job showing them opening up about their pasts, but the sequels take a hilarious turn, with the extra treat of giving us a glimpse into Innocent's holiday with her family.
Breaking The Ice by Somniare
9,599 Words, James/Robbie, Rated M, No Archive Warnings Apply James jumps into a river on Christmas Eve to save a drowning child, and Robbie has to prevent him from getting hypothermia. Huddling for warmth made all the more delicious by the deeper feelings that go unspoken between them—and by the uncertainty of waking up tangled together the following morning.
And The Snow Came Down by wendymr
2,795 Words, James/Robbie, Rated G, No Archive Warnings Apply Bad weather hits Oxford on Christmas Eve, and Robbie ends up in a car crash on his way up to Manchester. As their conversation shifts from asking for help when in trouble, to spending Christmas alone, Robbie makes a discovery.
Mistletoe and No Wine by Somniare
17,508 Words, James/Robbie, Rated T, No Archive Warnings Apply Lyn and the family are visiting Oxford for Christmas, and Robbie finds himself agreeing to cook an entire Christmas roast. Thankfully, James is there to help with food and decorations, especially after Robbie takes a fall while hanging the tinsel. Made even better by the moments of domesticity, Lyn's observation skills, and James' aversion to mistletoe.
Mistletoe and Whine by perclexed
7,724 Words, James/Robbie, Lizzie/Tony, Rated T, No Archive Warnings Apply Lizzie's pov. Lizzie watches Lewis and Hathaway dance around their feelings for one another, after Lewis returns from New Zealand alone. When Hathaway is stabbed on Christmas Eve, she rushes to the hospital to check on Hathaway and ends up playing chaperone. The growing rapport and banter between the three, and especially Lizzie's inner observations, are such a treat to read.
Scissure by wendymr
6,841 Words, James/Robbie, Rated G, No Archive Warnings Apply When Robbie sprains his ankle over the Christmas holiday, Lyn calls James to help him back to Oxford—a fraught affair after their recent falling out. This does a great job building that emotional tension through their inability to communicate, until finally the truth comes out.
A History of Flight by Jackie Thomas
2,628 Words, James/Robbie, NR, No Archive Warnings Apply, Allusions to Potentially Suicidal Behavior It's Christmas Eve and James goes to arrest a suspect alone, ending up in the hospital. Surely it's only his imagination that Lewis is there at his side, when he ought to be on a holiday cruise to Norway with Laura. The fic evokes James' desolation at Robbie's retirement and his post season 7 existential flu so clearly. Extra kudos for sergeants Richard the 1st and 2nd.
Ghosts Of Christmas Future by loves_books
5,693 Words, Rated T, No Archive Warnings Apply Open-ended, with a hint of A Christmas Carol minus the ghosts. An achingly powerful look at the effects of loneliness and different kinds of friendship and companionship through four possible Christmases where James is injured after the ending of season 9.
An Oxford Carol by Somniare
11,447 Words, James/Robbie, Rated T, No Archive Warnings Apply An Oxford Christmas Carol. On Christmas Eve, Robbie awakens to a familiar "Lew-is" and a ghostly tour through Christmases past and present, as well as a glimpse into the dismal future that may yet come to past. He wakes the next morning determined to put together a proper Christmas for his sergeant, and to finally overcome his reticence and tell James how he feels.
The Surrender of James Hathaway by divingforstones
41,726 Words, James/Laura/Robbie, Rated T, No Archive Warnings Apply James struggles as Christmas approaches and Laura and Robbie settle further into their relationship. Little does he know, but an especially insightful and determined Laura has a plan already set in motion. This fic fits so much comfort in it, and does a great job of naturally building up the relationships of each pair within the trio, as well as the three of them as a whole.

i literally just finished shadow and bone and i am dutch so i get to shit on the dutch usage and pronunciation now hehehe >:D
i kept track of all names and words and stuff that i thought were dutch(-inspired) based on the word itself or context, then divided them into 3 categories: "yup, thats correct", "aaaaaalmost", and "wtf is this." (pronunciation will be thoroughly criticized later.)
(disclaimer i have only read a small part of SoC due to ✨life✨ so this is mostly based on the show)
yup, thats correct
the following words/names are completely believable, both in context and the name itself, + why:
tante Heleen - tante = aunt and Heleen is a very Dutch name; Dreesen is a real last name; Edam is a real place (their cheese is pretty good); Rozenstraat is a very generic and common street name; Edyck is the fancy old spelling of Edijk, which is probably either a place or someones name; Rietveld is a real last name; stroopwafels are real and oh so very good; Appelbroek, aka apple bottom jeans (or apple pants ig), could probably be a place name; Hiemstra is probably a real last name; Saskia is a very Dutch name; Lij could be a real place; Kooperom sounds so much like a real restaurant i actually would want to eat there now.
aaaaaalmost
these seem like theyre actually dutch names at first glance, but its just a little... wrong. off. (again, + why.)
Ketterdam, as ketter means heretic (probably why its named that tbf), would never be a real place name. it sounds very weird; "goedemorgen, fantomen" was pronounced so wrong i had to take another listen to pick up what he was saying, + wed use "spoken" instead of "fantomen", especially in the context of surprise survivors; Jakob is fine, but Hertzoon would be spelled Hertszoon. even then, its still weird - -szoon was only used with the fathers name, and "hert" means deer, which isnt really a name; Henrik Van Poel would be correct if Van was spelled without a capital. its a "tussenvoegsel", an infix, which behaves a certain way in dutch, including not being capitalized when the whole name is written out; (B/D)uysberg (dont remember exactly) is almost correct, but idk, something feels just a little off about it, especially if it was Buysberg, which is what i think it was; Kaz would be spelled with an s and maybe a C depending on the full name, and Brekker is right but just doesnt feel like a real last name.
wtf is this.
these arent dutch. these will never be dutch. no. (once again, + why.)
Kerch just doesnt sound or feel dutch, even when pronounced the dutch way (which it isnt in the show); stadwatch is a combo of dutch and english, which wed never do like this - just call it the stadswacht or the city watch, both sound better; Sturmhond is a combo of German and Dutch, make it Stormhond and id believe it (but i guess it was made up by a Ravkan, so its excusable); kruge is just not it.
alright. time to learn some dutch pronunciation and spelling rules.
all letters are pronounced, except, depending on context, for final -n.
g/ch = /x/ or /ɣ/ (make an s or z sound, roll your tongue back until its in the same spot you pronounce k), except for loan words.
ee = /eː/, or "ay".
y/ij/ei = /ɛi̯/ - closest thing i can think of is New Zealand "face" or Scottish "write". /aɪ/ ("I") would be acceptable.
uy/ui = /œy/, like finnish äy. nothing similar in English.
oo = /oː/, "oh".
oe = /u/, "oo" as in "loo" (not as in "book")
the rest is either right or depends on context.
"goedemorgen, fantomen". oh boy.
okay, so far we got /ɣud[e]m[o]rɣ[e] f[a]nt[o]m[e]/, where the letters in brackets are not yet explained and not necessarily obvious in pronunciation. from what i can recall, only one of them was pronounced correctly.
but lets start with stress patterns in dutch. the stress will always fall on the root of any given word, unless its a relatively recent loan word. in "goedemorgen", "morgen" is the root with the stress falling on "mor". they got this part right. in "fantomen" the root is "fantoom" with the stress falling on "toom". theres also secondary stress: "goedemorgen" is a compound of "goed" and "morgen", so it falls on "goe". in "fantomen", -en marks plural, and therefore secondary stress is on the other syllable of the root word: "fan".
if "e" isnt stressed in a word, its almost always /ə/ (e in "burden"). in this case, no e is stressed, so its all /ə/.
the first "o" is followed by multiple consonants, so its /ɔ/ (o in RP "sorry").
the second "o" is the shortened form of "oo".
"a" followed by multiple consonants, so its not the short form of "aa", and pronounced /ɑ/ (generic american english first a in "always")
this makes our sentence pronounced as /ˌɣudəˈmɔrɣə(n) ˌfɑnˈtoːmə(n)/.
#shadow and bone#long post#this is how i show love alright let me be#pana says things#wait i guess theres technically a spoiler in here#shadow and bone season two spoilers#sab s2 spoilers
