Melanin March Day 29 - New Zealand⁠ 🇳🇿 ⁠ Aren't these facial tattoos amazing? The symmetry is unbelievable. ⁠ ⁠ These tattoos (⁠Tā moko or moko) are traditionally practised by the indigenous people of New Zealand - the Māori. Tohunga-tā-moko (tattooists) were considered to be tapu (sacred) due to their skills. Both men and women could become tā moko specialists and would travel to perform their art⁠ ⁠ Mokos were very common in many Polynesian cultures before European colonisation and were usually worn by high-ranking people to show off their social status as well as making them more attractive to the opposite sex. Receiving a moko symbolised an important milestone and transition from childhood to adulthood. Men usually wore a facial moko along with on their bottoms and thighs whilst women usually tended to only have their lips and chin done.⁠ ⁠ The tohunga-tā-moko would use an uhi, a kind of chisel made of albatross bone, to create the moko. Rather than puncturing the skin like a needle would in modern tattooing, the uhi left the skin with grooves. ⁠ ⁠ They used two kinds of natural pigments for their mokos - awheto (a kind of fungus found on caterpillars) for body mokos and ngarehu (burnt timber) for the blacker face colour. These were mixed with animal fat to make the 'ink' they would use.⁠ ⁠ Melanin March is a drawing challenge created by @bianabova where you draw a POC every day for the month of March.⁠ ⁠ 📸: Unfortunately I couldn't find the source for this reference image.
