Gray’s Papaya, NYC
Tumblr media
That picture says it all.
Not much more needs to be written about the magic of Gray’s Papaya; their last remaining stand is on the corner of Broadway and West 72nd St., and you can’t help but be pulled in by the glow of their lights and smell of grilling hot dogs if you’re in the area. Popped in last week after a night of drinking with some old friends...
Tumblr media
The one thing that has changed though is the prices. When I moved to NYC in 1996, their “Recession Special” was two dogs with the toppings of your choice and a drink for $1.99. Now? It was $4.95 for one dog and a drink...
Tumblr media
As always, I went with their namesake, of course...
Tumblr media
And as always, it was delicious! The frankfurter was perfectly grilled to get that snap you expect, slathered with onion sauce and a touch of mustard, both still free.
They do charge for other toppings now, though...
Tumblr media
(Look, I love mayonnaise, but who puts it on a hot dog? And for fifty cents?!)
Three dogs and a drink will set you back $9.95, which isn’t too bad in the grand scheme of things here in Manhattan, but I can’t help but think back to “the good ‘ol days” whenever I eat here these days.
Putting current prices aside, Gray’s Papaya is a Big Apple institution and can’t be missed when you’re on the Upper West Side. A true taste of New York!

“I’m wearing a 40s silk slip dress I got from a flea market that FIT hosts once a semester. My jacket is vintage Ralph Lauren and I got my lace top second hand as well online from eBay. My style is influenced a lot by period pieces. Some of my favorites are A Room with A View, Marie Antoinette, and the Duchess.”

Eleanor Roosevelt at the first anniversary celebration of the opening of the Strang Clinic (now the Strang Cancer Prevention Institute), an infirmary for women and children, April 26, 1934. May Strang, niece of Chauncey Depew, who with her sister, Dr. Elise L'Esperance, founded the Strang Clinic in memory of their mother, is shown pouring tea for Mrs. Roosevelt.
The Clinic was devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Dr. L’Esperance collaborated with Drs. May Edward Chinn and George Papanicolaou, whose research led to the early detection of cancer of the cervix. This resulted in the Pap test. In 1940, Strang was the first medical facility to introduce it into clinical practice.

"It would be easy to idealize the Herondales, but they are, after all, just people. There will be more stories about the Circle in future; can't talk about them quite yet, but you will see more of the influences that shaped Stephen. (And in fact meet a different, even worse Herondale.)" - Cassie's full answer can be read here - https://www.tumblr.com/cassandraclare/89795771639/herondales?source=share
Cassie says there will be more stories about the circle, and if she meant those three old stories, then it's definitely not enough! because, for example, I personally never understood why Stephen, who was older than Valentine, was so dependent on his opinion, even when it came to his personal life, starting with "the evil we love." I still didn't understand what exactly he was missing in life. Are strict, suffocating parents really to blame for this? Why does he say in "The Last Stand of the New York Institute" that he sacrificed too much for the circle, but what exactly? He was still with Amatis at the time.
Many of the circle did not fully understand Valentine's brutal struggle with the undead, but remained in the circle out of fear of Morgenstern and because they were grateful for his assistance. Robert was indebted to Valentine for teaching him how to overcome his fear of runes. Lucian for the fact that, Valentine taught him to be a skilled warrior. Hodge, who saw a better future for himself in Valentine's new world, and so on. But Stephen really had it all. What did Valentine do for him? Did he drive the "suffocating" Imogen away from Stephen? Was his hatred of the undead real, or did he copy it from Valentine, as well as the style of clothing? He seemed ashamed of his bloodline. Was he so ashamed that he gave Valentine an important book for his family? (otherwise, it is unclear how the "tale of two cities" ended up in Valentine's apartment).
In "The Last Stand of the New York Institute" there was a moment when it was said that Lucian could believe in the rightness of the circle's actions, but Stephen knew that they were violating the agreement. Nevertheless, he gladly agrees to take Lucian's place when he "dies". Later, he becomes disillusioned with Valentine. I thought the reason for the disappointment in the circle was that Stephen began to realize that they were actually murderers. But wasn't it enough for him to kill the entire Whitelaw family, which is related to Stephen? And how easily Valentine brushed it off. After that, he becomes Valentine's lieutenant. Oh, Stephen. I pray that there will be a separate story about each member of the circle🖤

Oren Root, a longtime New York City lawyer and Columbia University graduate who was at the school when anti-Vietnam War protests rocked it in 1968, said Shafik's summoning of police was "an extraordinary miscalculation."
"President Shafik and her advisers clearly didn't learn from history," said Root, who was a top editor at The Spectator, the Columbia student newspaper, in 1968 and 1969. “Calling in the cops was clearly a mistake. Things have not gotten any calmer.”

Di Froyen-Velt (the Jewish Ladies' Home Journal) was a Yiddish women's magazine published in New York in the early 20th century.
The magazines I pulled these images from are available on the website of The National Library of Israel - and you can download them as pdfs. Not all the magazines listed are available and I didn't pull images from all the magazines available to download. Also the downloading is a little glitchy, you might have to click download a couple of times before the download actually starts.
I don't know if the patterns were produced under the label of the magazine, but the March 15, 1914 patterns are listed as being by May Manton (see more here and here).
