SUNY Purchase students launched their encampment today, and the school responded by placing the campus on lockdown and calling in state police:
Checkpoints on its public road to prevent anyone from getting anywhere near campus and checking on the well-being of the students.
-- Suzanne Adely, 2 May 2024 7:04 PM EDT
The full demands are as follows:
1.) Financial transparency: Purchase College Board of Trustees and SUNY board must make public all investment records in the interest of transparency and to ensure that these institutions engage in ethical financial practices. The college must also establish a diverse committee of elected faculty and student responsible for ensuring ethical investment in the future. 2.) Divestment from companies with ties to the Zionist entity and form any defense contractor, weapons manufacturer, or surveillance company in the form of investments and institutional partnerships. 3.) Enforcement of a full academic boycott of “Israeli” academic institutions, including exchange programs and collaborative education projects 4.) A full acknowledgment of the genocide currently taking place in Gaza, through which a distinction is made between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism, a ceasefire is called for, and a public apology is issued to Palestinian students who have been offered not even a kind word from administration since the siege of Gaza began. 5.) Amnesty from criminal charges and academic sanctions must be granted to all comrades occupying the liberation encampment, as well as to non-violent protesters such as CJ who have been sanctioned unfairly in the past. 6.) Removal of Paul Nicholson from campus as a consequence of physically attacking a nonviolent protester in December.

The New York Telephone Company Building was one of the first completed projects in the 130-acre White Plains Urban Renewal Area. A telephone building previously occupied the site, and the company announced plans in 1968 to renovate and expand the structure, citing anticipated growth from the urban renewal area as the “chief reason for the necessary expansion.” (The Reporter Dispatch, 1968). Because of the building’s structural integrity, it was saved from demolition, but the “bulky ugliness” of the building led New York Telephone to an “imaginative design [that] turned this clumsy monster into a modern functional sculpture. In this special instance, the architectural challenge was mainly aesthetic.” (Club Dial, 1974)
[...]
The building was described by Paul Goldberger for the New York Times as overbearing while also being ambitious, “aggressively sculptural and altogether unwelcoming.” (New York Times, 1983) Goldberger was critical of White Plains' automobile-centered urban renewal development, but especially tough on the Telephone Building, stating it “may look intriguing as one passes it in a car, but that makes it like most of the new downtown White Plains, a place that if it works at all, it is from the vantage of the automobile.” (New York Times, 1983) However, the Club Dial, a magazine published by the Woman's Club of White Plains, took a liking to the brutalist behemoth, writing it was cleverly rejuvenated and a fresh new look of a previously boring structure:
“Instead of a variety of different window types, the architect applied one single element, a flat, rectangular concrete slab (like a Venetian blind's blade) creating an intricate appearance by the positional and directional variations of the same element. The dynamic relationship of the horizontal and vertical positions interrupted by omissions at unexpected locations performs like a symphony and dispels the last trace of boredom of the original structure.” (Club Dial, 1974)

Why Haven’t You Read My Latest SubStack Article? It’s Time to Wake the Sleeping Giant!
Dear Readers, Students, Parents, Teachers, Administrators, Philanthropists, Donors, Nonprofits, Politicians, Business Owners, and Leaders,
I have one question for all of you: Why haven’t you read my latest SubStack article, Day Trading: A New Game Changer For Youth of Color in Marginalized Communities? Or any of my other articles for that matter?
https://open.substack.com/pub/tyroneglover/p/day-trading-a-new-game-changer-for?r=1rkcyh&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true
For those of you who have taken the time to read them—thank you! I’d love to hear your thoughts and opinions, though whether or not they align with mine is beside the point. It’s more important that we’ve sparked a conversation, a much-needed one about the future of our most vulnerable asset: Youth of Color in Marginalized Communities.
The truth is, this isn’t just an article; it’s a wake-up call. It’s time for us all to realize the potential we are wasting, the opportunities we are missing to empower these young people. Financial literacy, investing, and day trading are no longer luxuries—they’re necessities if we want to level the playing field for these communities.
But let’s face it—our system, as it stands, has failed them. We’ve seen leaders who could have been champions for change, but instead, they chose selfishness, arrogance, and lies over the well-being of the people they swore to serve. Donald Trump, with all the potential to lead, chose instead to destroy, to divide, to betray the trust of the very people who believed in him. On the other hand, I have hope in Vice President Kamala Harris—someone I believe has the heart of a patriot and the courage to lead for all Americans.
This upcoming election presents us with a stark contrast: one path that promises division and the erosion of democracy, and another that stands for unity and genuine service to We The People. Our choice has never been clearer. To those who still believe that Trump offers something worthwhile, I ask you: Is your vote truly worth the betrayal of your daughters, your mothers, your sisters, and your future?
To my fellow Americans, to our immigrant brothers and sisters who have built this nation alongside slaves who toiled for free while others profited: you are not the reason for our country’s failures. The blame lies squarely on the shoulders of those who have exploited you, who have spread lies, and profited from division. It is time for those who have manipulated and deceived to retire into oblivion, where their names will be spoken no more.
So, I urge you—read, share, follow, engage, and comment on this article and the conversations we need to have. It’s time we move forward as a nation. Stay safe, travel well, and most importantly, vote like democracy depends on it—because this time, it truly does.
In solidarity,
Tyrone Glover

In celebration of Nonesuch Records’ 60th anniversary comes Michael Wilson / 25 Years: A Nonesuch Collection—100 box sets of 20 newly created prints from photographer Michael Wilson’s Nonesuch archive, including this 2006 image of Audra McDonald taken in Westchester County, NY. “We found a pathway in some lovely woods on a quiet day," Wilson recalls. "Audra had a fancy dress. She sat on an old-fashioned steel chair we'd brought along from her home. It must have been cool that day. It looks to have been breezy too."
You can pre-order Michael Wilson / 25 Years: A Nonesuch Collection, due September 13, in the Nonesuch Store here.
