“Jam,” Sirius hissed. “James, who’s that?” He pointed at a young man who looked about their age sitting outside the rink. 

“Dunno, Siri,” James replied. “Wanna go and ask?”

“No, Jam, we need to come up with a plan,” Sirius said, still whispering. “I want his number, James, help me.”

“Dude, I’ve always been shit at relationships,” James said. At Sirius’s glare, he amended, “But not my current one, I swear.”

“Good, ‘cause if you hurt Reg, you’ll be six feet under,” Sirius said. “Now, help me.”

“Siri, you could just go up and ask. You’re plenty pretty enough,” James sighed. “I don’t see why I need to help.”

“Well thank you, Jam, but I dunno if he even likes men!” Sirius whisper-yelled. “Help me, Jams, I’m having a crisis here!”

“Fine. I’ll ask him,” James sighed. He made his way off the ice and over to Sirius’s new crush, apprehensively tapping him on the shoulder when he was close enough.

“Hey,” James said when the guy looked at him. “Sorry, random question, but do you like men? ‘Cause my friend out there- the one with the long black hair- wants your number, so…” he trailed off. 

He should not have said that. Sirius was going to kill him.

The mystery man looked shocked for all of two seconds before he chortled. “Yeah, I like men. Uhm, yeah, that was quite the start to a conversation. Name’s Remus Lupin, by the way, tell that to your friend.”

“Yeah, of course. Oh, and if you don’t mind, please don’t tell him that I accidentally told you that he wants your number, thanks,” James said, already getting back onto the ice.

He saw Remus nod, and breathed a sigh of relief.

“Sirius,” James said, sneaking up on his friend. “Good news, he likes men. Oh, and his name’s Remus. Now go ask him, or I’m never dealing with your love life again.”

Sirius took a deep breath before making his way over to where Remus sat. James watched as they engaged in conversation, smiling the whole time. 

Finally, Sirius made his way back over to James with a wide grin on his face. “Jam!” he yelled. “Jam, I have his number now!”

“Congrats!” James smiled. Thank fuck, Remus didn’t spill the beans, he thought.

“Now, Jam, do you think I should take him skating or to the park for our first date?” Sirius asked excitedly.

James groaned.
