On rereading my old fic...

I’m having a lot of thoughts right now about rereading things I have written.

I struggle to reread original work. I don’t get lost in it when I start reading it, and I suspect that’s because I have already read it a few hundred times (I’m exaggerating, but it’s a lot) before it was put out for public consumption.

But fic. Ohhhh… I am one of those weirdos who loves to reread fic I wrote.

This came to mind because in the past few days, I’ve reread two old fics because both of them came up on my radar for different reasons.

(They were the “Love You So Hard” series of Scott/Stiles fics, and the “Dancing On Blades” Sterek Olympic figure skating AU, both from the Teen Wolf fandom, if you’re curious).

I didn’t mean to read them. But then I sat down trying to remember exactly what I’d written, and a half hour or so later, there I was like oh. Hey. I wrote that and I do not hate it. In fact, I now have a bit of a words hangover where I’m not ready to leave that world.

I love and hate that hangover. I get it both from reading and writing. In this moment, it reminded me a lot of what I loved about both writing and reading fic.

I haven’t had time to write fic recently. I have several unfinished WIPs in a Scrivener file, but if I’m not getting the overdue original done, I don’t feel like I can take time to write fic.

I haven’t been reading fic, either. I’m so far out of the fandoms I used to be part of, I don’t know how to find the fic that will give me the feels I love. I haven’t found a new fandom to be obsessed by where I feel comfortably falling into it. I admit, I like big fandoms, mostly because I love the variety of work and the ability to find so many wonderful gems. Small fandoms are great for flailing in meta, but terrible for finding more than a few fics.

Reading these two pieces years after I wrote them (and yes, I have reread both of them before) brought me right back to the world I lived in at the time. The world of fic. The feels. The memories of what it was like to belong to a  big fandom, and all that energy.

I miss it.

But this isn’t about fandom—this is about rereading my own words.

I’ve heard a lot of writers say that they never reread their own pieces, whether that is fic or original. They don’t want to revisit them. They are uncomfortable.

I find great delight in rediscovering myself. Every story is a snapshot of where my mind was in that moment. Every story is a reminder that yes, I can write, and I don’t hate my words. They are GOOD words. They made someone smile enough to leave a comment, and when I reread them, they make me smile, too.

I, too, want to comment to ask, “hey, where’s the rest? can I have more of this?” and that’s a tad bit frustrating since um, the only way that’ll happen is if I write it.

It makes me want to write more, though. Not necessarily that story. Maybe an original piece. Maybe something inspired by it. Might be difficult, given that one of those stories was absolutely buried in the world of Teen Wolf, and the other was a fanfic nod to Yuri on Ice without being a full-on YOI fic.

But at the same time, I have shapeshifter pack politics in my PHU serial; Alaric has to deal with it all the time. And much of the inspiration for that was drawn from things I developed that were my own head-canons while writing TW fic.

Writing is about learning. Writing fic is about joy, and it’s also about testing theories, and playing with words and ideas in familiar spaces.

It’s about creating a soft blanket that someone might want to wrap up in again and again, shutting out the cold, dark night.

I’m happy that rereading my own work gave me that feel, like I could build a blanket fort out of a story and retreat into a simpler time.

I want to create those same feels with my original work. I want to create a comfort blankie made of words.

In the meantime, I need to stop rereading my own work and move on. Write new words. Remember that if I did it before, I can do it again, and better this time. I’m not done. There are still stories in me; my mind is a library waiting to give books to those who need them.

Imagine ice hockey player!Stiles comes to the rink one day to train and finds a guy on the ice dressed in sweats and a black shirt. He thinks he must be another player because the man is built, but as he watches, the man moves with elegance and grace. Stiles realises he’s a figure skater.

He can’t help but watch from the side of the rink as the man trains, trying to perfect a routine where he does a sit spin and straightens fast before moving into a triple Salchow, but he can’t seem to get it right. Every time he comes out of the sit spin, he loses balance and collapses.

After watching a few times, Stiles can’t bear to watch anymore.

“You’re coming out of the spin too fast,” he tells him.

“You know figure skating?”

“Not exactly,” Stiles admits. “But I know skating, and I’ve been watching you for the past half an hour. You come out of your turn to quick and when you straighten up you lose your balance.”

“And what do you suggest I do, coach?” the man asks jokingly.

“Keep the speed of your turn, but slow it down as you come out of it,” Stiles suggests.

The man shrugs and tries what Stiles suggest. This time it works. He finishes the routine and it is stunning. Stiles watches, awestruck by the man’s grace.

The man skates over to him, thanking Stiles and introducing himself as Derek.

After that, the two hit it off. Stiles gets really excited when he sees Derek training. Derek comes to Stiles’ games and Stiles goes to Derek’s competitions.

For Teen Wolf that would be Anything You Say, a Sterek canon divergence au where Scott was never bitten that night and they all went about life as (mostly) normal teenagers. Stiles becomes a Sheriff’s Deputy. Scott becomes a vet (or…. does he?) And it’s all normal until one night Stiles gets lost in the woods and meets a wolf caught in a hunter’s snare. The rest is history.

For Rogue One, it’s Skating Your Way Through: a modern SniperPilot au where figure skater Cassian is whisked away to a sports rehab center after sustaining an injury during practice. He’s sure he’s going to be bored out of his mind, until he meets single dad Bodhi Rook. Pining! Slow burn! Character building! And hopefully a lot of cute as shit romance.

Hey hey Sterek Fans! Today is the day that we announce our 2017 Sterek Week Schedule!! Without further ado, here’s the theme schedule for this year’s Sterek Week!

Wednesday October 25th- Alpha & Emissary: It’s a common theme, and the best part about it is that it works well for both canon AND AU! The only rule to this theme is that it has to heavily feature an Alpha and an Emissary, you could use the age old Alpha!Derek/Emissary!Stiles… or you could reverse it with Alpha!Stiles and Emissary!Derek! Or, if you want to get crazy, you could even make the Alpha/Emissary pair someone else and make them … an enemy for Stiles and Derek? A new pack to join? Maybe even it’s their kids that take on the coveted leadership roles, it doesn’t matter who they are, how they work in the story, or what universe it’s in, as long as they’re present and you keep it Sterek, it fits!

Thursday October 26th- Scene Stealer: Take a scene, any scene, from any show/book/movie, and Sterek it! Does Stiles get swept up in a tornado and land in Oz? Maybe he and a band of misfits have to save the Galaxy (again)? Does Derek meet his figure skating idol and end up getting coached by him to win the Grand Prix? Or maybe he releases a bunch of fantastic beasts in New York? Maybe someone can fix that Bleach finale’, if you’ve ever thought “Hey this scene would have been SO much better with Sterek..” then this is the theme for you!

Friday October 27th- Meet-Cute: Ahh meet-cutes, a staple of any fandom, and especially if Sterek! Meet-Cutes are a guaranteed AU and come in a variety of genres! Fluff, humor, angst, fantasy, pretty much anything you can imagine! (Although fluff is understandably the most common) Rewrite how Derek and Stiles met! It can be in the Teen Wolf universe if you want, or you could try any number of AUs, from coffee shop, to soulmate, to neighbors, get as cheesy as you want, or get creative and make us scream with glee over the cuteness of the meet-cute!

Saturday October 28th- Mates: Ever since werewolves became a thing, mates (and consequentially, mating fanfics) have ALSO been a thing (let’s be honest, they were probably a thing before that too) of course, though werewolves are encouraged, they aren’t mandatory for a mating fic! Surely there are other were-beasts and supernatural creatures with mates, and if not, there’s always SOULmates- also acceptable! Get as creative as you want and give us a reason to believe in true love again! (Or uh… make us WISH for true love again if angst is more your game) All that matters is that pre-destined life partners are a theme here!

Sunday October 29th- Lyrics and Quotes: This is one theme that can truly, easily bridge across any fanwork medium with ease, be it a video set to music, a songfic, graphics covered in quotes, or art inspired by lyrics, let your imagination run free with any words that inspire you! They can be dark, light, romantic, angsty, from fiction or real life, there are no limits, and CERTAINLY feel free to include more than one if you’re so inspired!

Monday October 30th- Partners In Crime: One of the thing the fandom seems to love most about Sterek is how well they work together, they may not always get along or agree, but when they’re in on something together it never fails to turn into something incredible, and that’s where this theme comes in! Now ofcourse they don’t have to be involved with actual CRIME for this theme to fit- they could even FIGHT crime!- it could work in an enormous variety of ways! Single Dads trying to put on an event for their kids, business partners, a singing duo, a designer and a model, Co-Alphas of a pack, pilot and co-pilot, or… you know… actual partners in crime, any kind of partnership is acceptable!

Tuesday October 31st- Halloween: Our last day this year is my personal favorite day of every year: Halloween!! From ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties, let your love for Sterek rule the night! The best part of Halloween themes is that you can use the actual holiday as Halloween for your theme- picking out costumes, trick or treating, and carving pumpkins, or you can just use what Halloween REPRESENTS- the celebration of all things magic, haunted, and living in the shadows, or hey, you can always combine it! You could also mix Halloween mythologies and modern day Halloween, maybe something special happens to werewolves on Halloween, maybe the Hales have always had a history of Halloween parties and some wicked pixies take over, maybe Stiles goes to the woods as Little Red Riding Hood and his Big Bad Wolf is waiting there for him… this may be the end of Sterek Week this year, but mark my words, as long as there is Halloween, there will be Sterek Week!
