Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore

It’s sometimes redundant to talk about the reputation of Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon. Developed by American/Russian studio Animation Magic for the Philips CD-i, they’re equally infamous for being the least appreciated Legend of Zelda games and for their abundant appearances in the early days of the YouTube Poop video genre.  However, they’ve also had their defenders (including an old article from this very website), claiming that they’re genuinely good action-RPGs considering the constraints they were made under. This has become more widely spread in recent years thanks to the unofficial remakes released in late 2020, using the original assets and adding quality-of-life improvements. These remakes were developed by Seth “Dopply” Fulkerson, who gained an appreciation for what those original games were trying to do and wanted to create something new in that same style.  Which brings us to Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore, a game that emulates a lot of what makes those CD-i Zelda games tick. If you’re here to find goofily animated cutscenes full of strange characters, you’ll get that in spades. But if you’re in the mood for a brisk open-ended adventure packed with charm and secrets for days, you’re getting that too. This isn’t an ironic pastiche, but a sincere tribute that succeeds on its own merits and makes for a great little romp.

SEGA announced a batch of revitalised projects at The Game Awards 2023 consisting of games from its extensive back catalogue which have not been touched by the company in years. One such title is the Jet Set Radio reboot which hasn’t been mentioned by SEGA in a while. Speaking to 4Gamer, the game’s director, Masayoshi Kikuchi, informed fans that this year is the 25th anniversary of the Jet Set Radio franchise and therefore they are planning how to celebrate it. Hopefully we may be lucky enough to get a new trailer of the game in action.

“I’m still working away on the new Jet Set Radio game. 2025 is also the 25th anniversary of Jet Set Radio, so I’m thinking about how to celebrate it.”

It's truly puzzling why many news outlets seem surprised by the success of Helldivers 2. As someone who thoroughly enjoyed the first game, I can attest to its addictive replayability and the thrill of working towards a collective goal of reclaiming the galaxy. The dynamic difficulty levels of planets, offering better rewards for greater challenges, kept players engaged and motivated.

Comparing the first game's peak player count of 6,744 on PC to the staggering 81,840 concurrent players that Helldivers 2 achieved on its launch day, it's evident that there was a strong foundation of interest in the franchise. While the first game had a more arcade-like feel with its top-down view, the transition to a third-person perspective in Helldivers 2 aligns well with the current gaming landscape dominated by titles like Call of Duty and Horde-based games such as Warhammer's Space Marine or Vermintide.

However, it's worth noting that Helldivers 2 hasn't been without its challenges. The inclusion of Nprotect Gameguard as an anti-cheat measure has drawn criticism from some fans, with claims that it's the cheapest and most insecure rootkit anti-cheat on the market. Despite this, the game's accessible price point of $39.99 across both PC and PS5 likely encouraged many players to give it a chance.
