The Fancyman Situation
I was thinking about New Girl again… and I don’t like Russel and Jess…
But Jess needed to date him.
She needed to date someone “above” her. If she hadn’t, she probably wouldn’t completely understand Nick and how he feels dating her.
I know a lot of the later seasons had a bunch of ups and downs, but the writers are solid and a lot of clear connections can be made between all seasons. They don’t contradict each other in the ways that actually count and matter to the story.
Yeah this guy is hot, we’ve seen him on the big screen, and he’s dreamy and a “real adult”.
Nick loves him...
But I never really liked them together.
From the beginning you don’t have any hope that Jess can be happy with him. Even though the story makes sense, the way they meet and fall in love is very romcomy, but it just feels doomed from the start.. in a real way, and not in the way the writers try to convince us early on that Nick and Jess wouldn’t work.
Russell is too practical and Jess isn’t “immature” or too young, she just needs a little nonsense in her life. Russel doesn’t truly understand her as a person or “see her” in the way Nick does.
Russel doesn’t actively care about what she’s doing or thinking in the way Nick does. He not actively invested in her for the sake of loving her and it’s not coming from a real place of desire of any kind.
He just wants something easy and someone who isn’t his ex wife.
Russel is just settling down with a nice girl and enjoying that he doesn’t have to put a lot of effort into her. He’s coming from a place where “I’ve done this before.”
He’s going through the motions.
Which makes sense that they have that fight where Jess wants “passion.”
But I think she really just wants an active partner that loves her for her and not any practical or conditional reasons.
She wants something that’s alive and real and growing each and every day.
I think Russel coming back was more for funsies and not because the writers actively tried to shake things up and dredge up an old romance and feelings for that what if Jess leaves Nick thing in a serious way.
I think it’s more of the actor asking to come back one more time or someone just said wouldn’t it be funny if an ex of Jess came back and Nick “fought” him..
Because.. that very funny and so real of them. Kudos to them if that’s what happened.
Either way…
The fight between him and Nick always makes me laugh, but I really do hate him trying to steal Jess away at her wedding.
.. like did he not remember he never really loved her for real? Or is that just me?

i think we as a society need to stop drawing the gender bent versions of crowley and aziraphale younger and hotter. we have seen crowley present as a woman before and she is clearly still middle aged and lanky. and aziraphale probably wouldn’t get very much shorter or younger. draw them with the wrinkles, cowards

fWhip: I’ll be like your guide.
Gem: Like Gandalf through Middle-earth?
fWhip: Probably not like… Okay. First of all, let’s take the Lord of the Ring references, let’s put them in a deep dark cave, okay, where no one’s gonna find them, ever.
Gem: Except Sméagol.
fWhip:
Gem: [whispering] He lives in a cave.

banger (?) idea: roleswap empires season 2 where Joel is the sheriff and Jimmy is a god. And also they don't hate each other and are friends forever and ever. Give this to me please....
Also Joel and Old Sheriff fucking hate each other. And then Jimmy shows up and him and Old Sheriff can yap together for hours. Joel is very confused but it makes sense, Jimmy likes to be friendly with his allies and Old Sheriff did lead Tumblertown for a good number of years.
I'm just. Like. People calling Joel a toy... and for reasons he himself doesn't understand, Jimmy tells them to stop. When Joel asks why, he can't provide an answer- all he knows is that he doesn't want his friend to go through that. The statue of God Joel replaced with a much smaller stature of God Jimmy inside Tumbletown, part of a fountain, and a matching statue of Joel located in the gardens on Stratos. Jimmy becoming the "patron God" of Tumbletown, granting wishes and the like, because he just feels that much admiration for Joel's work and that much love for his friends empire. Joel knows the way around Stratos and can't figure out why, but chalks it up to spending a lot of time around Jimmy on the islands.
Something about everything they do feels wrong but also not, like its what someone else should have done... but they keep doing it! They're best friends and that's what best friends do for each other!... Right?
