A Short Marketing History of Mount Holyoke College

Mount Holyoke College has a long history and marketing campaigns on the part of the Admissions Office have highlighted this history differently at different times, with a variety of reactions from both alums and the student body. 

In the 1890s a phrase used by the College in publicity materials was: “Into the World of Mount Holyoke”. Yet the phrase was not consistently used through the 1900s. Rather, the 1900s were a period when marketing techniques mainly focused on the assets of the school, such as the beautiful grounds and buildings. The College simply advertised the name, “Mount Holyoke College,” with a plain M as the Mount Holyoke symbol. By the 1960s there was a new attempt to advertise the College’s joint program with the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing, and to promote this program. [Archives and Special Collections. Admissions: Publications 1960s.] Other marketing in the 1960s included: “125 Years of Higher Education for Women,” as well as “New Directions” and finally the Mount Holyoke symbol began to shift to include the “M” and the “H”. 

By the 1970s and through the 1980s the official advertising phrase was: “For Women: A Challenge to Excel” and “A College for Women,” but many Mount Holyoke students, faculty, staff, and alumnae became familiar with the phrase “Uncommon Women”. The phrase “Uncommon Women” became a kind of unofficial Mount Holyoke College slogan in part due to the prominent work of Uncommon Women and Others by alumna Wendy Wasserstein, who in turn was influenced by President Gettell who used the term “Uncommon Women” in a speech (though this was before Wasserstein’s time at the College). It is unclear whether the phrase was officially used by the College, but it was known and used by many students and alumnae of Mount Holyoke. 

In 2013 the College launched a new marketing campaign with the phrase: “Never fear / change.” The rebranding attempt received various reactions, including concern from some alumnae that the phrase was an attempt to warm alums and students to the idea of making Mount Holyoke College a co-ed institution. The Communications Office noted that the phrase was solely an attempt to “honor the College’s history while challenging the College, the community, and all who engage with Mount Holyoke to be self-aware, future focused, and optimistic.” (https://www.mtholyoke.edu/neverfearchange/). 

More recently the College has been using phrases such as: “Proud to be Powered by Mount Holyoke College” in its marketing materials. I attended the @newmuseum yesterday I was racially profiled and continuously miss gendered by their staff and administration. I finally interrupted their bullshit and began questioning the several staff members involved. I wanted to be as clear as possible on what part each of them played in the intersecting challenge.
