It’s here! The much referred to Gold Saucer gala!

Something’s Gotta Give Masterpost

Severia Zetsuen stared at her reflection in the mirror as attendants of the Golden Saucer hovered around her checking for stray pieces of lint or misbehaving hairs. They had her dressed-up like a doll in a gown that simultaneously had more fabric than any other garment she owned and showed more of her skin that she would ever have dared herself. Her hair was freshly washed and pinned up at the base of her skull while shorter tendrils had been delicately curled to frame her face.

Now the Saucer employees all stood back admiring their handiwork. “You look just stunning, Ma’am,” one young Hyur girl said gleefully.

Severia felt stunned herself. She’d never in her life worn such expensive clothes or had her hair and makeup done by experts. The results were certainly fashionable, but she almost felt she wasn’t herself anymore. She didn’t want to seem ungrateful, but this whole ordeal was becoming… well, an ordeal.

Coming to the Gold Saucer with Nero had seemed like a harmless way to kill some time. There were any number of ways he could amuse himself while she found a quiet corner to relax in. Naturally, everything had gone wrong and for the last hour she had endured being poked and prodded and prepared to be paraded around at a gala that she absolutely did not want to go to.

So much for keeping a low profile, she thought with a sigh.

Severia spun slowly in front of the mirror, her silken dress swishing around her. Her helpers clapped and sighed appreciatively. It was impossible not to feel her confidence buoyed up, despite how strange she looked to herself.

“Your beau is certain to have the breath knocked right out of him!” a towering Roegadyn woman assured her.

“He’s not my beau and I don’t care what he thinks.” Severia watched herself flush red in the mirror. Red with anger. Anger over this whole ridiculous situation she had somehow gotten herself into. Rage that Nero had tricked her into thinking he might be someone worth knowing better… Severia shook her head and straightened her shoulders.

She only had to deal with Nero for a few more days. After that he could perish. One thing was certain, she refused to give him a moment of her time this evening. Let the rich Eorzeans eat him alive for all she cared.

“I suppose I’m as ready as I’ll ever be,” Severia said with a resigned sigh. “Thank you for taking care of me, everyone.”

“Have a wonderful evening, Ma’am,” they said in chorus.

Severia didn’t respond. She feared that the best she could hope for was to tolerate the evening, but they didn’t need to know that. They were only doing their job. As she must do hers.

An entire floor of the Gold Saucer was dedicated to high class facilities. A stage and orchestra pit filled one side of the room and a fancy lounge and bar occupied the opposite side. In between was a large open space where people could gather for concerts, important conferences and even balls. And tonight, the Mandervilles were hosting a charity gala to benefit the victims of the Garlean advance, attended by al the most rich and influential citizens of Ul’dah.

Nero Scaeva leaned casually on the bar with a drink in his hand as he waited. He had received a treatment similar to what Severia experienced and now wore a black three piece suit perfectly tailored to his tall frame. The other guests were starting to gather and mingle. More than a few had looked him over curiously, but to his surprise their gazes seemed to focus mostly on his attire rather than his Third Eye. It was fascinating how among the rich what always mattered was how well dressed one was rather than whether or not one had committed war crimes.

One or two guests looked at him with more pointed interest, but Nero could feel nothing but boredom. The lounge was growing crowded and the band could be heard warming up nearby but still the Warrior of Light had not arrived. Nero focused on his drink and tried to appear too intimidating to approach. He should be allowing himself to enjoy the irony of being treated like an honored guest at an event meant to address the wounds he himself had left upon Eorzea. Instead he was thinking about Severia. He couldn’t get that hunted look in her eyes, like a rabbit in a predator’s sights, as they dragged her away to be pampered, out of his mind.

That had been an hour ago and Nero was beginning to be impatient. It wasn’t that he was worried about her. Why should he be? These people practically worshiped her. She was in no danger. But when her helpless eyes had brushed over him… an instinct he had thought atrophied from lack of use had flickered within him. The desire to protect. Nero knocked back the rest of his drink and left the bar behind, positioning himself between the top of the grand staircase that led up to this room and the elevator, either of which Severia might conceivably emerge from at any moment. He hated that he was anxious to see her. The damned woman had awakened all too many feelings he hadn’t bargained for since their trip had begun.

But he had messed up today. Had been thinking merely of his own amusement, somewhat bitter that she had abandoned him, not that he could blame her. Severia hadn’t signed up for this trip. She’d never wanted to spend her time with him. He’d made a bad showing of his behavior and now she despised him more than ever. He’d acted like an immature adolescent and if nothing else he didn’t want her to think of him that way. Was there any way for him to get back into- well, not back since he had never been in her good graces, but perhaps to earn a more favorable opinion after this debacle? He brooded on that question until a hum of activity indicated the arrival of the guest of honor.

When she finally appeared, Severia was on the arm of Godbert Manderville. They had dressed her in red, in a flowing gown that still left an abundance of bare skin available for all to admire. Her hair had been pulled up off her neck and her head was crowned with white stars that caught the light and brought out the glowing white rings in her eyes. She was, Nero thought not for the first time, so very lovely. But the smile on her face was brittle. Her posture betrayed her discomfort at being so exposed and displayed.

Nero watched her eyes flit about the room with growing dread. It was easy to see how she hated this. She hated being at the center, the beacon, the hero, the symbol. Severia Zetsuen was a woman who preferred solitude and quiet, but who had been thrust into the heart of the world’s conflict by forces out of her control. This was all wrong. But what could he do about it? It was at least partly his fault that she was there.

Godbert was giving a tiresome speech about the importance of caring for the widow, the orphan and the refugee peppered with references to the Warrior of Light’s many famous deeds, holding her firmly at his side for the duration. His efforts to get her to offer a few words of her own were mostly fruitless, but he soldiered on. Could the guests tell how miserable she was? If so they didn’t seem to care. The titillation of having the hero in their midst was all that mattered.

Nero walked forward into the crowd, determined to be close by when she was finally released. He didn’t know if she would want him, but if he could offer her any assistance at all he would. If only to make up for everything he had done. As he got closer her eyes locked onto him, her lips parted slightly. She mouthed a word. His name? There was surprise in her expression, warring with dread and desperation and, dare he think it? Hope.

He smiled. Without knowing why, without scheme or sarcasm, he felt a smile form on his face. A smile for her. Because she was lovely. Because she never looked past him. Maybe most importantly, because she needed it.

Nero watched as the crease between her brows smoothed and the tension in her lips softened. A tentative smile returned to him and for a moment the breath caught in his chest. It was the first time she had given him a smile. It was devastating.

But the crowd thought she smiled for them and as Godbert came to the end of his speech there was applause. Music began to play from somewhere off to the side of the dance floor. Severia breathed a sigh of relief and looked around herself for her escape. But the party goers were not so willing to let her go. A mob began to converge around her, many voices pressing questions and requesting dances.

Severia was so far out of her depth that she felt as if she were drowning. Hundreds of unfamiliar faces pressed toward her, threatening to trap her where she stood. It was all too much. She squeezed her eyes shut. Her heart hammered in her ears and she felt herself beginning to tremble. No, they mustn’t see the Warrior of Light like this. I have to be their hero...

Suddenly she felt a warm arm circle around her shoulders protectively, felt herself drawn close to an even warmer body. Somehow she knew who it was. Perhaps she had grown used to his presence of the past days. And though she should still be mad at him, Severia was too relieved by his familiarity to muster an onze of anger. So she clung to him. Her trembling eased and she looked up to see Nero staring down the guests who had surrounded her.

Nero was not quite sure why he did it. It would be easy to claim that he was merely taking advantage of an opportunity to put her in his debt. That certainly seemed the most plausible reason to place himself between her and a roomful of rabid fans. (There was nothing quite like having a large Roegadyn bearing down on you even as a Lalafell tried to slip between your ankles.) But the truth was he didn’t have that kind of reason. He had seen her there, looking so small and vulnerable, and had leapt into action to defend her.

Perhaps it was arrogant to think she needed his protection, but she didn’t push him away. So he gripped her tightly to his side and gave the approaching crowd his best “Tribunus laticlavus” scowl.

“Back off,” he growled. “I’m the Warrior of Light’s date tonight and I’m afraid all her dances are spoken for.” He continued to stare down his nose at them (even when technically he was staring up) until they dispersed, grumbling and huffing.

When the way was clear, Nero reluctantly loosened his hold on Severia’s shoulders and took her hand instead. “Come on.” He led her back toward the lounge area, which had now been mostly vacated by the gala attendees, and found an empty couch in a secluded corner to sit her down on.

Severia collapsed onto the cushions as if her knees could not hold on anymore. “I’m sorry,” she said softly, looking down into her hands lying on her lap.

Nero knelt down in front of her so that she couldn’t ignore him. “Being human like the rest of us isn’t something you should apologize for. I think the words you’re looking for are ‘thank you’.”

She flashed a rueful smile at him. “Thank you. But you don’t understand,” she protested as she hugged herself. “I’m the Warrior of Light. They depend on me. I can’t afford to show weakness.”

“Damn them all to the Seven Hells.” There was irritation in his voice, but only at those who expected so much of her. He didn’t like seeing her like this, head bowed and arms clasped about herself, full of self-recrimination. Perhaps he was no better than the rest of them. He too wanted her to always be the figure of strength and power that had first caught his eye. He too was afraid to see her as both less and more than what he expected her to be. But he didn’t want to be one of them anymore.

“It’s not that simple,” Severia said.

Nero took one of her hands in his. “We’ll make it that simple.”

“How?”

“I suggest, just for tonight, we forget about everyone and everything else. We put aside my motivations and your responsibilities, our pasts and our futures. For just tonight, I am only Nero and you are only Severia and no one else is here but us. So lets enjoy ourselves.”

Severia looked up at him, searching his face for some sign that this was just another manipulation. But she could see nothing but honesty in his delicate periwinkle eyes. Had she misjudged him again? She couldn’t figure this man out. Why did he cause her so much trouble and then turn around and act as if he actually cared how she felt? Perhaps she did owe it to him to leave behind her preconceived notions and learn who he really was when he was just Nero.

But would he be disappointed in what he learned about just Severia? She held no illusions about herself. Being the Warrior of Light was the only thing that attracted people to her. Yet when he looked at her like this… the piercing intensity of his eyes, the slight furrowing of his brow, the angle of his body, his thumb gently pressed against the scales on the back of her hand… She couldn’t help being drawn to that gaze. And she wondered if perhaps he was drawn to her the same way.

“All right,” she said softly in answer.

With a dazzling smile, Nero pulled her to her feet. “Would you care to dance, my lady?”

Severia loved to dance. Music had a way of bypassing her thought process and speaking straight to her body that was always hard to resist. Though she had never danced with a partner after the Eorzean fashion before. An image of Nero holding her close that way flashed through her mind and made her feel hot all over. But she also remembered his arm around her shoulders just minutes ago and how she had felt. Warm. Safe. How was it that Nero of all people had made her feel like that? She looked in his eyes now, sparkling with something she couldn’t identify, but that set her heart racing. And she realized that she wanted very much to try dancing with this man. To feel their bodies moving together to the music.

That thought made her blush and lower her eyes. Softly she said, “I think I would like that.”

En bouche, on a un vin avec des tanins souples et soyeux. Sur des arômes de cassis, myrtilles, prunes. Des épices (poivre en grains et eucalyptus). Une belle longueur en bouche avec une finale avec une belle trame minérale et des notes de violette et quelques touches mentholées.

📜En résumé📜 :

Second vin du Château d'Issan avec un beau potentiel de vieillissement en devenir. J'ai beaucoup aimé ce mélange de complexité, rondeur et soyeux en bouche. Je vous le recommande.

Second wine from Château d'Issan with good aging potential in the making. I really liked this blend of complexity, roundness and silkiness on the palate. I recommend it.
