Bingeing White Lotus? Check out the wines created by volcano energy!
I recently went to Sicily, not to follow the White Lotus life but to explore the wines of Etna, whose official DOC was formed in 1968. All the vineyards are situated in a half-ring at the foot of the volcano, whose eruptions have completely shaped the land and infused the soils, grapes, and wines with a bold, ashy minerality. I spent time visiting wineries in the four different slopes to the…

Cusumano 2016 Alta Mora Etna Rosso
Red fruit, orange peel, violet, earth and tea leaves nose takes on a bubble-gummy and ashy undertones. Kickass aroma. Medium-bodied with rich, slick red and dark berries, the palate tails off a little but finishes tight, at times saline, with graphite aftertaste. Tarry tannins too. Flashy but with substance to back it up. Curious to find out what's in store in the near future considering what a stunner the single contrada Guardiola is. Hoard this while you can. — ★★★½
Appellation: Etna Rosso Region: Castiglione di Sicilia, Etna, Sicilia, Italy Subzone: Verzella, Solicchiata, Feudo di Mezzo and Guardiola Cépage: 100% Nerello Mascalese Abv: 13.5% Production: 40,200 Élevage: 12 months in botti grandi Distributor: Milawa
Critic Reviews:
Strawberry, wild rose, citrus and Mediterranean herb aromas take center stage on this fragrant red. Reflecting the nose, the focused, vibrant palate offers pomegranate, blood orange, star anise and hint of espresso alongside firm acidity and fine-grained tannins. Drink 2020–2026. Kerin O'Keefe (Wine Enthusiast, 05/2018) 90
An elegant, light- to medium-bodied red, this shows fine balance, integrating light, taut tannins with a subtle mesh of ripe raspberry, cranberry and citrus notes, accented by dried thyme and tar-tinged smoke. Drink now through 2023. 3,350 cases made. Alison Napjus (Wine Spectator, 10/2018) 90
This was a challenging vintage on Etna that showed uneven results across different areas of the volcano. The 2016 Etna Rosso defies those difficulties to show steady aromas of wild berry, rose and blue flower. The wine is dry and almost dusty on the finish with generous flinty mineral tones. Some 40,200 bottles were produced. Monica Larner (Wine Advocate, 12/2018) 91
In the same mold, the 2016 Etna Rosso offers a rocking perfume of blueberries, wild strawberries, garrigue, and damp earth-like minerality. This incredibly perfumed, floral wine hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, a tight, focused texture, terrific purity, and a great finish. As with the 2015, it’s not a massive wine and has an almost Pinot Noir-like elegance and weight. It’s another singular effort to drink over the coming 5-7+ years. Jeb Dunnuck (12/2018) 92

wines for some theoi
feel free to send asks for theoi not listed! and of course, this is my personal opinion from my wine knowledge.
A fun wine for any theoi of importance are blends from Rapsani, which is located on Mt. Olympus.
Aphrodite: commandaria, which is made from the mavro and xynsteri grapes. Along with Moschofilero, for its striking, romantic, and rose-garden aromatics.
Apollon: for those who see him as a sun god, straw wines, and for plague Apollon, Botrytis wines such as Tokaji. For a more Gaulish Apollon, Vins de paille. The cretan wine Dafni could also work for being named after Daphne
Ares: sparkling reds, such as Lambrusco for their striking nature in carbonation and red hue.
Artemis: natural wines, those made with the yeast upon the grape skins, or traditional orange wines for the "wild" aspect of them.
Ariadne: traditional Cretan wines, such as Shiraz, Vidiano, Vilana, Thrapsathiri, Malvasia, etc.
Dionysus: all wines, but Retsina in particular.
Eros: romantic reds in general, I do not have a particular wine for him.
Helios: some ancient authors said one should not offer wine as he shouldn't be drinking on the job, but who listens to that? Straw wines and Sicilian wines match his nature as a sun god, though mead also holds a special place in my heart for him.
Hephaestus: Sicilian wines, for their volcanic nature, especially those around Mt. Etna such as Nerello Mascalese
Hera: aromatic reds and roses, such as muscat d'asti, and for Hera of Samos, Samos Vin Doux
Herakles: Agiorgitiko, for its home in Nemea, where he bested the Nemean Lion.
Hestia: table wines such as Chianti and Prosecco, though I have always found her in orange wine due to orange wine being a common style of the ancient world. Agiorgitiko is the most popular Greek wine, and as such I also see it with her in her ability to unite the hearth.
Hermes: wines from central Greece, but I would also argue Greek Chardonnay and Syrah for their international travel to Greece.
Pan: Savatiano, for its origin in Central Greece
Zeus: as Hestios and a household god, table wines, and very light wines, such as vignoles. Pyment could also be lovely for his love of bees.

Rubric "Remembering the Planet's favorite places". Taormina, Sicily, Italy.
Yesterday was the feast of Taormina, video from there. There was a lot of Tarantella, Nero d'Avola was flowing like a river ... Well, I would fall for a good barrel of Nerello Mascalese, at a table on this street along which the procession moves, I first tried it almost 20 years ago.
The small ancient town of Taormina is undoubtedly one of the main pearls not only of Sicily, but of all of Italy. Located on Mount Tauro, ancient streets diverge along the slopes of Monte Tauro, and the views are breathtaking: on the one hand - on the Ionian Sea in front of the entrance to the Strait of Messina, and on the other - on Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe.
Congratulations, Taormina.

Cusumano 2016 Alta Mora Etna Rosso
Garrigue, smoke, fresh asphalt and warm sage aromas precede raspberry, blackberry, orange peel and dried lavender perfume reminiscent of Lovely Lace store. Bitter minerality and succulently sweet red fruit take turns to rule the roost, with tightly-knit tannins gripping lightly but surely. Mid-weight, fairly compact with silky contours and terrific sapidity. While not quite the eruption anticipated, you gotta hand it to the low-key refinement at this level. — ★★★½
