Pedalium murex (Pedaliaceae), often known as Large Caltrops, is well-known for its pharmacological applications in traditional medicine. It is said to have good therapeutic characteristics that aid in the treatment of reproductive diseases in both men and women, including impotency, nocturnal discharges, gonorrhoea, and leucorrhoea. It also comprises a treatment for urinary and gastrointestinal tract problems. Antiulcerogenic, nephroprotective, hypolipidemic, sexual enhancer, mitigating, antidermatophytic, cancer prevention agent, antibacterial, and insecticidal activities have all been investigated pharmacologically. The current review may be a compilation of information gleaned from published research papers that focuses on the phytochemical and pharmacological features of P. murex. Which plants are effective at treating kidney diseases?
Plant-based foods are much better at promoting health than animal-based foods for a variety of reasons. Besides their abundance in essential nutrients, edible plants also contain a variety of phytonutrients that help combat or treat disease. The ability of these plants to produce antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and other therapeutic compounds serves as their main advantage over conventional medicines, which are chemically synthesized and cause more adverse effects.
Several edible medicinal plants are historically known to treat problems related to the kidneys. According to studies, ancient civilizations used various herbs and functional foods to address kidney stones and kidney disease. To examine their efficacy, Egyptian researchers selected four age-old remedies for kidney-related problems and tested their extracts against chemical-induced kidney toxicity (nephrotoxicity).
Ammi visnaga (khella), Petroselinum crispum (garden parsley), Hordeum vulgare (barley) and Cymbopogon schoenanthus (camel grass) are all medicinal plants commonly used today as food. The researchers found that these traditional remedies for kidney stones are rich in antioxidant compounds that make them effective treatments for nephrotoxicity and chronic kidney disease (CKD). The details of these findings were published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
These medicinal foods can protect against inflammatory diseases like CKD
The kidneys are part of the renal system and are responsible for many crucial functions, such as maintaining overall fluid balance, filtering the blood, getting rid of toxins and waste from food or medications and creating hormones that help produce red blood cells.
But because of their constant exposure to toxic substances, the kidneys are always at risk of getting damaged due to nephrotoxicity. Nephrotoxicity, if not addressed properly, can lead to impaired kidney function or even kidney failure.
Khella is a flowering plant from the carrot family and is sometimes called bishop’s weed. As an herbal medicine, khella is often used to treat renal colic. Its main active compound, khellin, is a known smooth muscle relaxant and is effective against urolithiasis.
Parsley is another flowering plant with plenty of medicinal properties. Besides nephroprotective activities, parsley also has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, anti-urolithiasis, anti-cancer and anti-hypertensive activities, according to studies.
Barley is a nutritious cereal grain that offers a lot of impressive benefits. Due to its abundance in dietary fiber, it is often used to help with weight loss. Barley is considered a traditional remedy for urinary stones, diabetes and high blood cholesterol.
Camel grass is a desert plant that was used by the Ancient Egyptians to treat various ailments. Some of its most notable properties include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, antispasmodic, anti-rheumatic and chemoprotective activities.
To evaluate the ability of these plants to improve kidney health, the researchers first obtained aqueous extracts from each and analyzed their phytochemical content. They then used the extracts to treat mammalian kidney (Vero) cells that had been exposed to carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) to induce renal toxicity.
The researchers reported that the extracts contained varying amounts of phenolic compounds and triterpenoids, as well as vitamin C. These antioxidants allowed the extracts to suppress CCl4-induced oxidative stress significantly by scavenging free radicals and increasing cell antioxidant levels.
All four extracts also significantly reduced CCl4-induced inflammation by inhibiting the expression of associated molecules, such as NF-kB, iNOS and nitric oxide. Additionally, the extracts improved the morphological appearance of Vero cells, cellular necrosis and the expression of kidney injury molecule-1, a marker of renal damage.
The extract from khella reduced CCl4-induced oxidative and inflammatory stress in Vero cells and proved to be more potent than Ketosteril, a synthetic drug used to treat CKD. (Related: Invasive weed from Africa found to be an excellent protective agent for the kidneys, according to new study.)
Based on these findings, the researchers concluded that the edible medicinal plants they studied, especially khella, are promising treatments for nephrotoxicity and other chronic diseases associated with oxidative stress and inflammation.

Renal injury induced by the chemotherapeutic agent methotrexate (MTX) is a serious adverse effect that has limited its use in the treatment of various clinical conditions. The antioxidant activity of Ginkgo biloba extract (GB) was reported to mitigate renal injury induced by MTX. Our research was conducted to examine the nephroprotective role of GB versus MTX-induced renal injury for the first time through its impact on the regulation of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B/ mammalian target of rapamycin (PI3K/Akt/mTOR) signaling together with the renal level of TGF-β #mRNA and long non-coding #RNA-metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript-1 (MALAT1) expression. A group of adult rats was intraperitoneally (ip) injected with MTX 20 mg/kg as a single dose to induce kidney injury (MTX group). The other group of rats was orally administered with GB 60 mg/kg every day for 10 days (GB+ MTX group). The MTX increased the serum creatinine and urea levels, renal TGF-β #mRNA and MALAT1 expression, in addition to dysregulation of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling when compared with normal control rats that received saline only (NC group). Moreover, renal damage was reported histopathologically in the MTX group. The GB ameliorated the renal injury induced by MTX and reversed the changes of these biochemical analyses. The involvement of PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling and downregulation of TGF-β #mRNA and MALAT1 renal expressions were firstly reported in the nephroprotective molecular mechanism of GB versus MTX-induced renal injury. http://bit.ly/2oJjUWz

Avocado pollen was found in high variability (13-58%). At least a 20% was suggested to guarantee the authentic avocado honey. Perseitol, sugar-alcohol identified only in avocado honey, fundamentally contributes to distinguish this kind of honey. The content varied between 0.31 and 1.56 g/100 g. The correlation between perseitol and avocado pollen was found to be significant. A minimum concentration of 0.30 g/100 g of perseitol is suggested to characterize the proposed monofloral avocado honey.
A misnomer, Avocado honey doesn’t taste like the fruit, avocado. This monofloral honey is produced mainly from California avocado blossoms originated in Southern Mexico, Central America, Australia, and several tropical regions. It’s having a dark color and fairly rich buttery flavor.
Basswood Honey (Tilia Americana)
For thousands of years linden honey was the most appreciated honey. The scent of the tiny yellow-white flowers of those huge trees that blossom in late spring or early summer, have always attracted humans as well as bees.
It is called basswood in America, lime in UK, and linden in Europe and Asia. (Though it is called “lime” it is not closely related to the lime fruit). But no matter the name, it belongs to the tilia genus, which has 30 species of trees, native throughout most of our Northern Hemisphere. The greatest species diversity is found in Asia.
The tree is reaching 20 to 40 meters (66 to 130 ft) tall, with oblique cordate leaves of 6 to 20 centimeters (2 to 8 in) across. The trees are hermaphroditic, having perfect flowers with both male and female parts, pollinated by insects.
It’s one of the few exceptional honey varieties having a light color, strong biting flavor, and a distinctive lingering flavor. Tawari (Ixerbabrexioides) is an endemic New Zealand tree (found nowhere else in the World).
Ixerbabrexioides, the sole species in the genus Ixerba, is a bushy tree with thick, narrow, serrated, dark green leaves and panicles of white flowers with a green hart. The fruit is a green capsule that splits open to reveal the black seeds partly covered with a fleshy scarlet aril against the white inside of the fruit. Ixerba is an endemic of the northern half of the North Island of New Zealand. Common names used in New Zealand are tawari (Māori: tāwari) for the tree and whakou when in flower. It is assigned to the family Strasburgeriaceae. The 'Beaujolais' of honeys, Tawari is best savoured when young. It's origins are the lowland forests of New Zealand's far north where the elegant tree's waxy white flowers prized by ancient Maori gift the bees a light yellow nectar with a lingering butterscotch flavour. So subtle and mild, it's perfect for topping pancakes, waffles or icecream.

Yellow Box Honey (Eucalyptus Melliodora)
The Yellow Box Eucalyptus has creamy pale yellow blossoms and a yellow inner bark. The Latin name, Eucalyptus Melliodora is apt; Melliodora is translated as “odor of honey” referring to the sweet honey aroma of the blossoms. The Yellow Box is a common species in the grassy woodlands of the tablelands and western slopes of the Great Dividing Range, extending from northern Victoria, through New South Wales into southeastern Queensland. This species is usually 15–30 m tall and mainly grows on gentle slopes, foothills or on flats near watercourses. It blossoms from October through January.
