The amount of times I've wanted to or DID make plushies for people important to me is far too many to count, especially when I was much younger and it was more age appropriate for me to be obsessed with stuffed animals. I stole supplies from my guardian and taught myself to sew specifically so I could make a little cloth doll for a friend. It was terrible, for sure, but I adored it.

For some reason, that has always felt like the most profound way to show someone I care for them. Not from a "Well it'll be cute/about something they like, hope they like it!" way, but more like....

I am pouring all my love for you into these materials. Every pierce of the needle and pull of the thread weaves another piece of my soul into the fabric at hand. At the core of each strand of yarn lies a memory that binds us. I hope every time you hug him you are reminded that you are loved, and even if we never speak again, you were loved once. He is love given physical form, preserved, unable to fade or die.

And over the years I realized that the reaction I was getting was certainly appreciation which thrilled me, but they did not seem to connect with the items in the ways my little heart intended. They sat on shelves, never hugged, and rarely held outside of being shown off. A place of honor, but not quite what I expected. I thought for awhile that maybe they simply cared Less for me than I cared for them. After all, could they not feel those pieces of my soul peeking out from every stitch, reaching for them to hold? It was distressing! How could they not when all of my plushies, even store bought, that were given to Me by Them just seemed to fill my heart so much?? I adored the plushies almost as much as whoever gave them to me, they were my best friends and I couldn't imagine going a day without hugging them at least once. Surely a handmade one should have had a stronger emotional reaction!! I wanted our bond to be shown in the ways the plushie was changed by their love. An item formed from my heart and changed by theirs, making something entirely new.

Once I was forced to hide away such a "childish" interest as I got older, I stopped giving them to others, and I received them much less. Many of my plushies were thrown out or given away by force, with only a few very sentimental ones surviving all the "Spring Cleanings" over the years. I was an adult before I once again felt comfortable asking for them for myself on wishlists without shame. Later I taught myself crochet and began making plushies again. I gave away many of my practice ones but I had learned my lesson growing up, that it wasn't worth the effort of pouring love into it. So I just took joy in the act of creation and never connected with what I was making. It wasn't until I finally decided to make one for my partner that I finally realized how much more fulfilling it is for me to make them with a heart, even if they do just sit in a box somewhere. It is enough that my heart beats within in, even if it never joins theirs.

Oh yeah yesterday I went to my C programming professor's office hours to ask about what's being covered in class tomorrow. Since I can't go bc of my PT appointment overlapping with it & I'm apparently the kind of student that cares about attending every single class now.

While I was there, I ended up chatting with him about a few things, including my current standing in the class. He asked what I got on the midterm exam, & I answered it was an 87, and he told me I was one of the top 5 or 6 scores in the Whole Class (this being a like. Maybe 70 or so person class). Top score was a 92 or 93 (idr lol) & the class average was a 72. Apparently there were a few of us in the upper 80s/lower 90s, but most people got 70s or lower. And once he does the curve on the exam, he said I'd probably end up with a 97 or so on the exam. So yay!!!

And then he told me how he's noticed how I come to class every day and am really active with taking notes and answering questions. Bc I also sit up front all the time lmao. Hadn't even realized how much of a damned teacher's pet I've been being, but I've been Trying to be a good student this year. But he said I was the type of student that if I got an 88% or smth in the class, he'd likely bump me up to a 90% so I'd get an A lol. But he also said so long as I keep up with how I have been, I could possibly get a 100% in the class by the end (bc I've been there for all the extra credit questions in class and whatever).

And just. I went there bc I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything important in class on Wednesday, and I ended up having my ego stroked for Real. Felt good to have my efforts be recognized.
