a speech about goncharov i made for my public speaking class!

note: this is not exactly what will be spoken for my class, as i am not reading my speech word-for-word. however, this is an outline of the speech i will be presenting, and i thought y'all might be interested in seeing it.

Introduction:

The purpose of my speech is to inform my audience of the fake movie “Goncharov” and how it has impacted me. My goal is to inform my audience of how the fake movie “Goncharov” came to be and of the value it has. 

By a quick show of hands, how many of you have seen or heard of Goncharov before? [Quick pause as I wait for no hands – or almost no hands – to go up.] Alright. So, Goncharov was a 1973 mafia movie supported by Martin Scorsese, and has been widely regarded as the greatest mafia movie of all time. It’s about the Russian mafia in Naples, Italy, and follows a variety of characters such as Goncharov himself, Katya, who is Goncharov’s wife, Audrei “The Banker” Daddano, and my personal favorite, Joseph “Ice Pick Joe” Morelli, with actors such as Robert De Niro, Cybill Shepherd, Harvey Keitel, and Lynda Carter. So, why have you never heard of this movie before? Well, everything I just told you? It’s all a lie. It’s all made up. Goncharov? Yeah. It never actually existed. 

I remember being part of the Goncharov fandom as it first blew up on Tumblr in late 2022. It was a great source of joy for me and made a significant impact on Tumblr’s culture. I am going to show my audience how Goncharov came to be, the creativity is spawned, and briefly reflect on how the website it originated on was vital for its growth. 

So, what is Goncharov, and what is going on here?

Origins:

Goncharov was a fake movie created by Tumblr in late 2022. 

Sometime prior to August 22nd, 2020, Tumblr user ZootyCoon posted a photograph of knockoff boots they had bought that advertised a non-existent movie, Goncharov, on them, claiming that Goncharov was “the greatest mafia movie of all time.” In response, on August 22nd, 2020, another Tumblr user, AbandonedAmbition, commented “This idiot hasn’t seen Goncharov”, which was then added to the post itself by Tumblr user LoserMo. 

While ZootyCoon’s original post did receive some attention, it wasn’t until November 18th, 2022 that Goncharov truly hit it off as a cultural phenomenon, thanks to Tumblr user Beelzeebub, who posted a fan-made poster for Goncharov, receiving almost 20,000 likes and over 15,000 reblogs in three days. 

Fandom:

As it turns out, you don't actually need a piece of media to be real in order for a fandom to form around it.

Countless fanworks were created for Goncharov, including fanart, fanfiction, music, scene analysis and analysis of motifs, gif sets, memes, and so much more. As mentioned in a YouTube video by YouTuber ColeyDoesThings, there was even a time where Goncharov had more fanfiction on a popular fanfiction website than James Cameran’s Avatar, the highest grossing movie of all time. 

So much lore was being created for Goncharov in such a short amount of time that efforts had to be made to record it all. Multiple individuals attempted to create a “master copy” of Goncharov’s lore, including what is now a 48-page Google doc that includes a plot summary, brief descriptions of various scenes, and links and sources to various contributors. 

But Goncharov could not be contained just to Tumblr. Various media outlets, such as The New York Times, The Guardian, Forbes, and The Washington Post all posted articles about Goncharov, an internet phenomenon.

But, why? Why this fake movie, and why on Tumblr of all places? 

As a social media site, Tumblr has an incredibly weird culture. There are no public follower counts, no verification for users, and a whole array of weird social rules. But one thing that really makes Tumblr special is the interaction between large and small blogs alike. Because anyone can and is encouraged to create their own content and add to others’ content, something like Goncharov could very quickly become a “yes, and” game among Tumblr’s users. 

Tumblr is also very much a “fandom” site. Fanart, fanfiction, and other fanworks dominate the website, and Goncharov in its heyday was no exception. Interactions between fans and fan creators is what really causes fandoms to grow and survive, so it makes sense that Goncharov thrived the way it did considering how easy it was to find fellow fans. With no pressure to reveal your “true” self, there’s a lot less pressure when you share what you’ve created. 

Conclusion:

So, what can we learn here?

The fake movie “Goncharov” was unintentionally created by a tag on a pair of off-brand boots but didn’t truly become popular until Beelzebub’s poster. Fandom quickly grew around it, creating countless fanworks, but Tumblr’s unique culture as a social media site is what truly allowed it to thrive. 

There is joy and creativity in unusual places. Whether or not you believe Goncharov to be a waste of time, the popularity of a fake movie says something about the human fascination with stories. Thank you.

This is my Miku pokemon trainer tier list

For this tier list its both my favorites and what i consider a very good miku design

Of course all of them are good miku designs but some shine above the rest

S tier- my absolute favorites Bug miku is so classy, so well thought out, and i think the brown looks amazing with her teal. Shes everything A close tie with bug miku is Ice miku her hair is everything to me im in complete love with this sharp miku. Water Miku is basic but that's all she needs in lovely simplicity, truly feeling like Miku in this world as a water trainer especially with her tan lines from her original outfit it feels like this is her off time from being an idol! Steel Miku had my heart as soon as I saw her with Jirachi. Which was my favorite pokemon when I was a child [it was prior before i even had any pokemon games of my own and only watched the movies] The colors, the motif of star, the hat and the hair its all wonderful to me!

A tier- Amazingly done concepts and totally miku! Rock Miku's dress and veil is lovely, i love they incorporated the veil as mock pigtails. If this was the verison of her without the dress then she would have been in S tier. I love the jester look but thats my own personal preference. She also reminds me of diance with the dress.

Flying Miku is gorgeous, the wispy hair, the translucent areas to mimic clouds and mist. It's an amazing concept and wonderfully executed design! Fairy miku i know is everyones favorite and it's obvious to see why, shes adorable and cute and I too would love to draw her. She has that appeal to her down to a T. Fighting Miku is something i've been waiting for this whole time. Of course no way they could do a pokemon collab with miku and not include farfetch'd! It's a sleek and simple design that takes traits of the original miku's outfit and tweaks them. Though she does kind of remind me of maka from soul eater just a small bit.

B tier- Great concepts! Electric Miku's lightening pigtails are so cute she looks like a little adventure/farmer of currents. She stands on her own as a design and as a tie to miku. Poison type Miku i would have done the same doing mucky/slime twintails though i probably wouldn't have thought to use the new alolan muk which is a very good look and helps add in the colors. It's a great design and while i wouldve put her in A tier some of her design elements hold me off. This is a top tier character design though trust me Dark Miku, i love she came with obstagoon. Though at first i couldnt even tell if miku had pigtails in the artwork. This reminds me just of a nice miku for a cover of an existing song which is not bad it's just how it feels. Normal type miku has good colors, shes paired with an active singing pokemon and while it's simple I think it conveys miku well enough. Though she keeps reminding me of the oversaturated stereotype of early 90s fashion. now on Ghost miku, shes higher than i'd actually put her but for her concept and simplicity of staying to miku but as a glitched out ghost version of her i do have to give props to that even if i find it more on the plain side. I think they succeeded in what was necessary even though this portrays miku AS the ghost instead of just a ghost trainer. ....honestly now that i type my words i feel like i was right and shouldve stuck with her in C tier.

C tier- too basic for my tastes yet still well done Grass miku is cute and all but if you told me she was unrelated to miku, i could believe you. Just that it'd be a fandom joke to call her 'green miku'

Fire miku, reminds me all too much of the anniversary miku song and im sure thats where they got part of the insipration from it but it doesnt really do much for me combined with the fire aspect and how her hair is shaped. I know its to mimic the pokemon shes with its just personal taste on that one. The silhoutte is good.

Ground type miku i had to keep looking up because i forget what shes supposed to be numerous times. Same case with grass miku, i could see someone telling me shes from x thing and unrelated to miku. I'm just not a fan of the design and colors but it's well done. I know when something is just my subjective taste rather than poorly done.

Dragon miku while i'm not the biggest fan of all the cowlicks going down the twintails i know it's purpose is there to mimic the spiked tail of a traditional dragon and i wouldn't want them removed. I think i especially just don't like the tacked on half shawl cape it feels disjointed. Yet i find its a nice concept they did both an almost knight look for her as dragon as always with the concept of knights and dragons battling. Now the knight trainer is battling with the dragon as comrades.

Psychic type miku- i think they started with the least interesting and noteworthy one honestly. It just looks, kind of uninspired but thats rude to say. I know shes here to fufill the concept of miku as a trainer in pokemon and well it just looks like she's her own trainer class that'd have multiple running around looking the same instead of a stand out like a rival or a gym leader in game.

Some people find Mr. Mime to be kind of uncanny, with its nose-less face, long jointed limbs, and slightly too detailed hands, but I've never heard anyone complain about Mime Jr. here. It's mostly because, while based off of Mr. Mime, the design has been simplified greatly, and features like a super cheerful expression make it hard to not find this little guy adorable. Them mimicking people and not being very good at it also doesn't hurt their cuteness factor.

I like how, conceptually, it starts off as a clown and then becomes a mime; kind of similar but still distinct ideas that work well with each other. It also looks really solid visually; the light pink body has great contrast with the dark blue accents, the black eyes pop, and the nose and red ball on the chest compliment each other, as does the ball on it's jester-cap esq hair. It's clown-like enough to pick up on the theme, but done in a nice and subtle way.

I've heard a lot of people say that Mime Jr. doesn't look enough like Mr. Mime, but I honestly don't agree. They share the exact same color palette, similar color distributions (dark hair and legs/feet, light pink faces and arms, dark pink circle accents, etc.) and a lot of the same motifs, like the zig-zag hair and circles. I think the only place where the line looses cohesion a bit is the head, as the two have very different eyes; not inherently a bad thing, but it does make the faces less similar.

Ironically, Mime Jr. arguably fits even better with the Galarian Mr. Mime line, but for opposite reasons; the color palettes are completely different, but more elements of the body shape and face carry through (G. Mr. Mime has a nose, think arms but thicker legs that are completely black, mitten-like hands, and a scalloped pattern to the body; all traits that Mime Jr. shares). Mr. Rime also helps with this, keeping all of the shared attributes and even gaining a stockier body shape in the legs, the round red nose on the stomach, and similar eyes to Mime Jr.

(A lot of people say there should've been a Galarian Mime Jr. On the one hand, having an ice-type variant with blue instead of pink would've made the cohesion of the line spot-on; but on the other hand, I don't know if there's a ton they would've done with the design beyond just minor visual tweaks. I don't know, if it's between a fairly standard recolor variant that exists for coherency vs. just skipping it all together, I do get why they wouldn't think it was needed. Plus, like I said, the line is incredibly coherent as-is anyway).

Anyway, a really cute and fun pre-evo that feels like it adds something thematically to the line and works really well with both regular and the Galarian Mr. Mime lines. Great stuff.

Do you have any thoughts on the Empty's "you made it loud?"

The two things that come to mind are some old-school religious systems where elder gods find humans "noisy."

Enlil comes to mind, finding humans so noisy and annoying, that he can't sleep, so he sent plagues, drought, and flood.

The country was as noisy as a bellowing bull The God grew restless at their racket, Enlil had to listen to their noise. He addressed the great gods, 'The noise of mankind has become too much, I am losing sleep over their racket. Give the order [to kill] (Dalley 18)

This of course makes me think of the Shadow's need for peace as well as Amara's complaint in season 11, that she wanted peace and quiet.

AMARA: Spoiled brat. I needed solitude and he needed a fan club, so he made all that. Then when I complained, he stuffed me in a hole for eons – with your help.

The other more ominous association is Jack from Lord of the Flies. The story terminates with Jack as authoritarian ruler over the brainy-and-shelter oriented characters Ralph and Piggy.

This has some...implications for how Jack Kline terminates his journey with a Castiel-coded destiny, doing what Godstiel could not...becoming a better, more powerful God, and taking up Castiel's family's tragic motif of becoming absent, distant.

It's a great tragedy, I think, that the end of his journey illuminates the very worst of Cas and Dean:

CAS: What sounds good to me is Jack fulfilling his destiny. DEAN: Okay, yeah, but… icing on the cake? I mean, Chuck wanted Cain and Abel, and… now we’re going all Biblical on him. Killed by his own grandson. That sounds right to me.

Ultimately, it is the military tribe of Heaven that maintains its ultimate power, even moreso than the hunters.

Jack ends the story, not as a human or a hunter for "the little guy" and championing small-time survival, but as a supreme authoritarian motif, a Heavenly King. (The Good king fallacy, imho.)

You'd think the conch motif from Lord of the Flies is a reach when it comes to SPN, except that Belphagor takes on the motif, using Lillth's Crook in a similar manner to the conch, drowning everything out as he moves to take power.

Cas destroys the crook in a fit of overpowered rage (per script), going so far as to incinerate Jack beyond any hope of recovering him into his body.

Since Belphagor is of Hell, and Cas can more easily see the problem of Heavenly-authoritarian power here. All the same, time and again, like most of us tragically, we're often okay with our own child taking power. And Jack ultimately does just that, from the questionable practice of eating hearts to going along with Billie's self-annihilatory plan.

CAS: And I know now that this child must be born with all of his power. (12x19)

And

SAM: Jack, you… you ate their hearts? JACK: I… I had to. DEAN (to CAS): And you let him? [CAS nods.] DEAN [frowning but unwilling to have an argument] Hmm. (15x11)

I actually think Castiel has a very lovely come-to-Jesus moment in 15x18 Despair with, "We don't care about you because you fit into some grand plan...but because you're you." But like with Dean, he only comes to his senses after Jack's died twice. And it's too late!

I'm sure there's more I can think of, but it's been a very long time since I've read Lord of the Flies. :-) I'll add to this if I think of anything else, but those are the main two that come to mind!

Judar wears hanfu and hanfu earrings in my HC design. I imagined that he would wear gold and red hanfu earrings, and also snowflake/icicle ones! Silver snowflake ones, and glass icicle earrings would be cool... I also want him to have Snowflake, Moon, and Ice Dragon patterns on his hanfu... ❄️🐉🌙

Judar is an ice magic/lightning magic main. Glass icicle earrings... So I think I may wanna put snowflake/ice and dragon patterns on his hanfu. The silhouette of a Chinese dragon would be rad ❄️🐉

JuAli are Sun/Moon and Fire/Ice themed, so I wanna include their leitmotifs as apart of my headcanon (HC) designs for them… ☀️🌙🔥❄️

I have trouble making light colours stand out on its own without contrast, hence white + gold + black hanfu could be a great solution. But I'll have to think about it, since I want them to match and for their hanfu to be direct opposites of each other for visual/colour contrast reasons

I want to include their motifs on their hanfu, though I also wanna make sure the design doesn't feel too cluttered 👍

Judar: Black Sun, Moon and Eclipse Symbolism and the Sun-Eating Dragon 🐉☀️🌙

I've been thinking that I really want to commission arts of JuAli sometime...

I haven't talked about it on my side, but I was thinking of commissioning arts of JuAli and XanLena.

Mire's art style is so gorgeous that I was thinking that I would be ESCTATIC to see JuAli and XanLena in this style, if possible...

It doesn't have to be right away, since I still need to get my HC ref sheets in order first, but I've been brainstorming ideas for JuAli in this exact commission format... Since I want to commission arts of them with my HCs.

Because of course, I need to get my ref sheets in order and decide the details and design elements first. I have their flowers decided (red hydrangea and sunflowers), I just need to decide on the quotes and text and BG elements...

The rambles I have of coming up with ideas aren't ready to post yet since I still have to clean it up.

The summary of these rambles would be:

Since Judar is themed with the Black Sun and Moon, this also makes him Eclipse themed.

My friends Cinna and Jaqui were the ones that brought this up to me

And then when I thought about it, I thought about JuAli as: Black Sun x Sun, Moon x Sun, Eclipse x Sun

Therefore, to me, JuAli is "The Moon (Judar) Eating the Sun (Alibaba)"

I think I'm planning to have "The Moon Eating the Sun" as the tag line... Like I just think it's so perfect for them...

Since Judar is CN inspired, I thought about how I would LOVE to have the theme of "An ice dragon devouring the Sun" as a reference to Chinese Eclipse mythologies where it was believed that a Dragon would eat the Sun during a Solar Eclipse.

"Moon/Dragon eating the Sun" works really well for AliHaku too considering their Sun/Moon symbolism as well, but I think it also works really well for JuAli too :)

Considering Judar summons Seeker Ice Dragons in the Judar vs. Aladdin fight in the Kou Empire arc...

Agree or not, Ice IS responsible for Goose's death.😭😭😭 He does the exact thing which he criticized Mav about. He puts people's lives at risk with his ambition to succeed. Of course, I think he didn't have such an antagonistic purpose while he was in the air. He understood his mistake later.. The frenzy of Icy & the frenzy of Hangy are similar... (A recurring motif in Hang, flying has become a passion and human life has been disregarded.)

Ice = Hang

I'm sure the filmmakers agree with me about this. At the end of the second movie, Roo waits for Hang to come to him. After that Hang says his words to him... with Ice's grin on his face. Even the fact that Hang is on the left and Roo is on the right according to the audience explains everything. Normally Hang had helped them, he must have been the first to land his plane - some internet users even consider it as a logical fallacy. But in the dramatic scene we watch, Mav and Roo had already landed, and Hang came later; which is why he is on the left. And he hugs Roo. Of course, with his eyes and hands, not with his arms...

(I'm not obsessed with these positions myself, but I appreciate sharing. Again. In the air, Hang's plane is usually on the left of Roo's.....just like Ice's plane is usually on the left of Mav's🥺🥺🥺Icy & Hangy are not antagonistic characters AGAIN, but the character on the left is usually the sinister.)

Mav could only forgive himself at the end of the 2nd movie. Roo also has a person to forgive in parallel. He has Mav. Because he is the one to blame. But Roo's "mercy" had come even sooner than that of Mav. He had already forgiven Mav without waiting for the end of the movie...it doesn't matter if these two "forgivenesses" are not made scene-by-scene. The important thing is the main characters thematically have this forgiveness.

Hang wants everyone's attention especially on him. "I'm good Rooster... I'm very good." But he especially wants Rooster's... He won't hesitate to yell at him for this. For this, he does not avoid hitting below the waist. Iceman had been stubborn about Cougar for a while. Of course, Cougar wasn't Mav's relative at all, so what Hang did in the second movie was even more despicable. The man officially brought up his father's subject. Of course we always justify that as fans, but it's not the general behavior of the audience. The general audience would agree with Rooster mostly.....unless he's particularly disliked. Why would anyone dislike Rooster c'monnnn

Yet again...every time you see Hangman's scene, you definitely find some item..... Just like Ice (who constantly plays with his pen or his watch) Hang doesn't need to be in direct contact with his "rival". Even Mav/Roo's physical presence in the environment causes Ice/Hang to feel the need to ✨annoy✨ him, respectively.

I continue to add small details… because I am coming to the end of my 💖article💖, Maverick's red helmet and Roo's helmet dominated by red and yellow… The idea that Roo is Mav's adopted son was embraced by the filmmakers and they started to see them as real "father-son". It's not hard to write "father and son" as very similar characters. If the father is self-sacrificing, the son is also self-sacrificing. The father apparently sacrificed himself for the mission. But the son, too, sacrificed himself in order to return and rescue him, embracing the possibility of saving him. Of course, the event that would test Roo's life happens after stealing the F14. But that's enough. RooMav's self-sacrificial personalities are highlighted. The devil is in the details, and the "goofballness" of the two is at its peak in this F14 adventure.💓💓💓💓

Let's move on to the actual hug, a remake of the IceMav photo. This time on the left, Mav takes on the role of Ice.😊😊If Roo wants to be a captain forever , it will be Mav to protect him. LOL: Roo is the new Mav….. he has proven to be worthy of that legacy. He is already the direct heir of Mav … This is how our series ends. As we don't have a third movie, I have nothing to add. But I would argue that "Mav // Hang" is acceptable; however, Roo and Ice have nothing in common in my eyes. I don't see any similarity between these two characters. Exceptions do not break the rules.🤷🤷🤷🤷But everyone is entitled to blah,blah,blah you know.....

Hi! This is exactly what the title says. This is also going to get a bit long. Also these are just the ones off the top of my head, I'll come back to this again if I have more Thoughts.

Carta Mantua:

Tried to get some space-themed and white-colored vivos in here but her ace would be a T-Rex Lord with a Silver Leg Alectro and a Silver Body Aopteryx for support. I'll also give her a Frontier Coatlus and Papygon.

Golden Time

A mix of time-themed vivos and some regal eastern ones. She would love sauropods. Frontier Toba would be her ace. Silver Arm Krona and a Ryden for support.

X YZ

Tried to get in some good support vivosaurs and wishing star motifs. I think small triceras would be her favorite. Silver Head Proto, Silver Head Mihu, and Frontier Ajka would be a great team.

Ice Flame

Needed that mix of fire and ice for her so she's getting a Yango, Silver Head Jiango, and Silver Body Kentro team. She'd not much of a believer in ace vivosaurs so she balances out her team into any and all formations.

Fire Angel

I wanted to give her a whole team of fire birds but they can't fly so she's getting fire type pterasaurs! Frontier Ptera JP and Silver Leg Sungari for support. Dimorph Ace would be her ace (haha). She's blind and not too picky on colors so she would choose miraculous fossils by how powerful it would make her vivosaur.

Candy Corn Vampire

No bat vivos. :( Sad! Anyway, tried to get some funky Halloween ones. A Breme and Silver Head Hopter for support. His ace is the Silver Body Zino of course of course.

Oblivion Starlight

She was really hard to pin down, but I decided to make her a Neutral specialist. Silver Head Brachio, Silver Head Mihu, and a Penta would be her main team, but she'd also have a Neo and Silver Body Tophis on rotation.

Deathly Toll Bells

There are no Greek vivos to add but she would have a Seidon. A Silver Head Stygi and a Frontier Mapo would also be on her team. She'd also have Kaishin up her sleeve if she wanted a serious battle.

Lady Law

She'd try to make a balanced team I'd say. No clear ace but she'd have a Paki, Silver Body Dikelo, and Silver Head Tanstro. I wanted her to have some 'weird' vivos.

Perenelle

I think Perry would enjoy a team of little guys to be her little helpers. Compso and Coelo for support and a Dacerus for her ace. She's not big on silver fossils, only gold ones.

Däe

Gave them a unicorn as their ace: Omias. Silver Head Parium and a Silver Arm Elasmoth for support. Didn't want to give them a dream/sleep themed team so much but I think they should have a Silver Head Jara, Silver Arm Nigo, and a Squirth in rotation.

Mary Blüde

She would most like get a 'patchwork' team that wouldn't look like it matches at first but actually has great support. A Silver Leg Tro and a Hibigon would be on her support. For a touch of regality she can have a Giga Allo for an ace. She always keeps her ace in the front like an axe so it can always deal heavy blows. She'd get a Lythro along the way.

Scarlet Frost

Water type specialist all the way! The more icy the better. Silver Arm Thalasso would be a good pick. Silver Leg Oloro would also be a good support and Frontier Cryo would be her ace.

Demigod

Went with a punk theme and vivos that had a 'metal' aesthetic going on. Her ace would be a Silver Leg Cheirus and she would also have a Silver Body Breme. Later on she would be able to get an O-Raptor Fiend and Diplo.

MVF

Had to really scratch my head but I decided to give her a team of 'underdogs' for theming. A Silver Body Shanshan and a V-Raptor for support and an Aeros as her ace. I wanted all her vivos to be capable of super evolving, but the Shanshan was perfect for theming and the whole Tarbo/classification situation fits well with her story.

Aries

No goat vivos so she's getting a full fire team! She'll have a Guan as her ace and a U-Raptor and Peloro for support. She'd try to make all three balanced.

Ti Gold

No prehistoric bears- Sad! Let's give them a Silver Head Megath, B-Brachio, and Frontier F-Raptor. I also think she would be able to make a team out of Z-vivosaurs.

Madeleine Marionette

I really wanted to give her a deer but I went more with her fear-inducing color pallet and nature. She gets a Megalo of course of course and a Silver Head Krypto. Let's also give her a Silver Arm Nasaur for cute factor.

Mike

He needs a creepy team full of Z- and B-vivos in my opinion but I think realistically he should have the 'average' kind of vivosaurs. So let's give him a Spinax as his ace and Edapho and Stego for support.

Valentina

She gets an unruly Titanis for her ace and two tanky vivosaurs for support: a Silver Head Pachrino and a Tricera. She'd super evolve her Tricera given the chance.

Moroko

Going to give him a 'dog' vivo and make his team based more on his three friends (Shiela, Yippee!, and Ghostworx). The easy answer would have been to give him three Dinomatons. He'd have a Silver Head Hoplo as his ace and a Silver Arm Orno and a Silver Head Dunkle.

Suiuus

Creepy deer all the way. Silver Body Ceros and a Silver Head Synthos for support. I'm also giving them a B-Rex.

it ties in really well to the sort of recurring motif i see through his life that the only time he's allowed to be truly happy with himself and his place in the world is after his "death" and recovery. kazama is a very complicated character to think about when it comes to his motivations and his relationships with the people he's close with - i don't think he's very good at prioritising his emotional investments (nishiki being the obvious example, but also the way he doesn't send any letters to kiryu in jail until the last day before his parole), so to add an extra layer of tragedy to the whole thing i like to think that he hadn't been making as much time for kashiwagi towards the end than he maybe could have been. not in a premeditated disloyalty sense, of course, but he's got his hands more than full with the whole embezzling 10 billion yen from the tojo coffers gambit... kashiwagi being the way he is though would be all the more desperate for reconciliation, and to then not get it before kazama kicks it would be the icing on the shit cake

but yeah KNOWING adachi was in the building with everyone else must have been like reliving his second-worst nightmare... meeting this man he thought he'd be able to settle down with for the first time in sixty odd years but still constantly having to worry after him. i still adore no idling as an exploration of those feelings after the fact & i find myself coming back to it an awful lot as someone who doesn't generally read fiction more than once or twice unless i'm trying to find something specific (if you may allow me my nerd moment)

it's something i would love to explore more myself, but i don't really feel i have the means to do it in a way in which i'd enjoy the end product... but i suppose that's what commissions are for!

ANYWAY, apparently, everyone kiryu meets in his side story gives him some kind of reward, and i'm having A Time thinking about what he might get from kashiwagi. i'm trying not to set myself up to be disappointed by what happens, but there's a big part of me that hopes kashiwagi pulls "suzuki" to the side and leaves whoever else on the bar for a while so they get a chance to actually catch up. i think at this point both of them really need something like that, because i doubt there's any way kashiwagi didn't get the news that kiryu "died" in 2016

the other big thing that's got me physically shaking is the idea they might finally namedrop him. and uuhhh if they still let us karaoke at survive then i hope judgement gets its own cinematic. : )

The scythe (and a 'brief' inclusion of the concept of 'difference'). I need this in a separate post, actually. Because Seele's scythe has always been a constant fascination of mine, not only because a scythe is an absolute kick-ass weapon, but because it really helps in setting her apart from the other members of Wildfire, and even those outside of it. Not that uniqueness is a power per say, but because all of this adds to the consistency of what they seem to want to represent with her: how being 'on your own' never really goes away. The concept of being 'unique', whether it's positive or negative, never really wavers from you as a person, it seems. And I think Seele personifies that reality from what we know of her early childhood and into her adulthood.

As an orphan with a relatively rambunctious attitude, she likely didn't endear herself to children of her age, and she caused enough ruckus for the adults to keep her at bay (Nat has the patience of a saint), and at the young age of ten, she canonically would find herself in the occasional fight with local thugs while patrolling with Oleg; she was not your usual kid.

All of this to say, that she came from 'being different' and to remaining that exact same thing to this very day, and I think that her scythe is one of the most obvious things representative of that.fact. Seele stands out today, as she stood out when she was younger— granted she grew up in the Underworld, which already makes her part of this concept of 'other', or if you look at it from an Overworlder's perspective: 'lesser'. It's funny, because I think of what I just typed, the keeping people at arm's length— and I see how imposing her scythe is, and it still plays into achieving that. It'll either warrant fascination, or it'll scare people away with how dangerously dangerous it looks. Any way, I actually got massively sidetracked, so let me try to get back on point here.

In essence, while the scythe is unique in appearance, most certainly, it was/is likely a result of a very practical way of thinking, which ultimately got meshed in with a personal preference or even a 'cool factor' wish, if you will. So, just as I did for Kafka (with results I'll share soon, I just need to do some thinking), I had a watch and listen to Seele's ultimate animation to see if there was anything else to dissect from it that could potentially be tied to any sort of explanation for the scythe, and at 0:06 seconds in, you hear the sound of a gunshot quite clearly, which got me thinking the ever obvious question: why? It's a scythe, and she has no obvious ties to any sort of gun(s), so why is there the sound of a gunshot? So, I did some searching to see if any Redditor made mention of this as well, and low and behold, I found exactly that, and some of the commenters struck gold with their comments to the OP. Let me just quote each one for ease:

— Maybe canonically it was a Silvermane Guard rifle and Seele retooled it into a scythe. — Yeah, this was my thought.Bullets might have become scarce after the Underworld was sealed off, so she converted it into a melee weapon. — This would also explain why she has a scythedespite no agriculture in the underground: she made it herself (or had someone more technically minded make it for her) out of a variety of parts (...) — A scythe is also just a really big ice pick and what is the main motif of the enemies on the planet? That’s right, ice themed. Could be done so tohelp crack their armor (...) It'd probably be pretty good against robot armor, too.

Now, we know that the Underworld became absolutely starved of resources the longer it was sealed off, so it's not exactly like they all had parts ripe for the picking, and so had to make due with what they could find, and then fashion that into what was needed. Weapons with ammunition were likely the first to be let go of, for how could you use that which needed parts that couldn't be fashioned or obtained for the longest of time? But all of those arms couldn't just be thrown away, it'd be a waste for those who are already lacking that which is needed to defend themselves with. So why not refashion it in something that's of use to you in one way or another? Especially by someone who would know their way around arms and weaponry as a whole (as come to think of it, no, I don't see Seele fashioning something like that for herself, at least not from the ground up; maintaining and adding to it as time passes, perhaps, but not from the ground up, I doubt that's what she meant by 'handicraft' in those text messages). I do think an initial draw to the weapon like a scythe is because of how imposing it is, it's so difficult to wield effectively because many of its strengths also pose you with its limitations— and yet in that lies a challenge that I think a girl like Seele thrives for, and could actually achieve. She bears a monumental source of strength (not just specifically physically, but mentally) to have survived as she has until she was taken into the orphanage, it fits the endurance that she had to have possessed as of a young age to navigate the streets as she did after she obtained food in less then morally 'good' ways, and the agility that primarily ties in with the latter. She also fits the type of person who holds the mindset to be able to turn a scythe's psychological impact to her benefit, she holds that courage and fearlessness that you need for it; and she also definitely is cocky/arrogant enough for it. I actually, the more I think on it, the more I think that she truly is quite a great fit for it, actually, even if I think her impatience would likely have been her enemy while training with it. You need a hell of a lot of patience, and I think that would've been troublesome for some time, but I think Oleg, for example, would have been a great teacher for that.

Any way, I've been rambling for a day and a half, but what I mean to say is— as much as Seele once was 'different', she remains it to this day. The scythe is unique within the arsenal of Wildfire, and even Belobog, and yet it fits perfectly with her aesthetic and her person. Everything about Seele seems incredibly messy, and it is, but it's her mess that works exceedingly well for her. Seele's scythe seems to come from a disassembled weapon (that in all ways, was the opposite of what it's now become) that might still hold some semblance of function to this day; her attire is a combination of all kinds of things and fabrics that don't go together whatsoever and yet were fashioned into something of her own (we know that she does handicraft, which includes fixing up dolls, so she knows how to sew and likely knit). There's just— it plays into the visual (and personality-wise) consistency of her character very well, and I'm just, I'm just a fan. Don't mind me, I don't know if I actually touched enough on what I wanted to say, so I'll likely make a part 2 soon, but I just needed to get thoughts out.

Well, the one I was talking to you about a few weeks ago is nearly done (I think the writing IS done, just might need a stress test on whether things are too blatant or not), so have a bit from the other WIP I told you about that while back... under the cut :)

And before I post the rest of this, I'm not a fucking Rempe apologist, the kid should be WELL out of the NHL, I just get ideas about people I don't like and in this case it's an idea strong enough that I'm writing it. This is, to be fair, a common theme in my fiction (exploring a person/character I despise). But. Alright. Here we go. This is actually the part where the fic starts, so you're not missing out on context really.

Sometimes, Matt thinks he sees the world differently than everyone else.

It's like he blinks, sometimes, and there's this film separating him from other people. Like a bubble, all soapy and colorful, rainbows cascading down the corners of his vision.

Sometimes, he reaches his hand up to poke or press his hand against or even punch the bubble, depending on how he's feeling that hour. It's not real, though, even if it feels like he can see the rainbows ripple on the sides of his eyes, all staticky and prone to bursting into flames.

He's back at it again, lying on his bed somewhere in fucking Hershey or Wilkes-Barre or wherever it is today, arm lazily held up so his palm blocks the single light in the podunk hotel they're posted in. The light is annoying as hell; it's two shades too bright for a bedroom, plus it's the only light in the entirety of the room and fucking Korzy is reading some sort of artsy book that's wider than a puck 'cause the girl he's trying to bang is a Renaissance nerd. Matt's pretty sure his roommate is looking at the pictures more than he's actually reading the text, but it's the thought that counts or whatever.

And of course then this goes on to be a little character-revealing banter session between the two of them. Gotta figure out how to get out of that, I'm good at being in dialogue but the entries and exits are tough. And then, y'know. Stumble more along the fic. I don't have many plot details for this one, I have more vibes of what I want to explore. But:

Essentially, what I'm trying to do here is set the stage for the fic spinning forward. Matt "seeing the world differently" is, well, I don't want to say obvious foreshadowing, but it is. That bubble is going to be important, as it's a somewhat more "tangible" motif that can portray what's "wrong" with Matt, in a way, and serves as a proxy for his emotions too (the bubble bursting into flames when he hits the ice and squares up for a fight, the bubble shaking with static and pulsing red when he's suspended, the bubble shining with strong rainbows when he doesn't seem to be on the same wavelength as others and fading away when he does, etcetera etcetera). As the fic moves forward, we're going to see how he does see the world differently - how he takes in information about things, especially interactions with other people, that's maybe not exactly how "normal" people would, and how this influences his actions, which then seem irrational to people who don't see it in the way that he does.

For instance, with Korzy (Ryder Korczak) - Matt very patently thinks of him as The Guy I Room With (who is quite annoying, may he add) and not much else, despite them having spent months together and Korzy making an effort to include him in everything. He sees most of the Wolfpack, and a fair amount of the Rangers, too, solely as people he has to deal with, which is a far cry from Team As Family as we see very often in fic and even in real life.

As I'm thinking about it, I see him being introduced to the Rangers' locker room in a future section and him immediately locking in on Kreider as the main person he needs to be "in the green" with to keep a roster spot, and that's more or less how he thinks about it, too. When he's talking to players like Kakko, who he's competing for a spot with and who don't project as useful to him, he's flippant in his internal monologue, treating it as a Necessary Interaction, even if they're nothing but nice to him. It's not that he's not civil about it, but he really just doesn't care about the other rookies' attempts to include him in their friend group and their plans.

Also, for a dude who's kind of paranoid, having an entire "police" dedicated to wanting him to like. Not be a danger to everyone on the ice is the peak of "just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not watching you". It's a ton of pressure to be under and he doesn't handle pressure well, but you wouldn't know because he says the right things when the camera is on him. (The second it leaves, however, is a different story...)

Back to the excerpt at hand, though - some words are definitely deliberate choices. "Podunk" especially feels like a very Matt-like word - this from the guy who's said "jiminy crickets" live on camera before.

"Hershey or Wilkes-Barre" is a call to the Wolfpack schedule where they play those teams away back-to-back with less than 24 hours between the two puck drops (and probably close to only 18 hours rest between the two games) - at some point, it all blurs together to the point where you forget what town you're in, just that you're going from bus to hotel to game to bus to hotel to bus to game to hotel to bus to - you see what I mean here. And this is kicking in for Matt, too, the derealization of it all, years doing this in juniors and now more in the minors, never breaking free of The Grind in the way playing in the NHL would. And then when he does get to the NHL, he realizes it's the same thing, just on a bigger scale. Talk about a disappointment.

On music, I've got a mini playlist full of Vibes for this fic. Not gonna talk about that just yet, but there are Definitely ideas for that front.

ANYWAY POKEMON PROJECT VOLTAGE MIKU RATINGS (part 1)

starting with the first ... i don't really like it . nothing about it screams 'psychic type' to me and it doesnt really mesh well with meloetta. i'm not a fan of the outfit in general (like what is happening with the hat) but the bag's cute i guess so 3/10

this one's cute. i think rillaboom is a good choice and the cheerleader miku is fun. i'm not sure about the blue elements in this one though, wished they went with an orange to complement her pokemon. i do like the hair though 5/10

another great idea for a pokemon! i always really like a big jacket and i think it's cute that her hair is the same shape as skeledirge's fire. i think the blue goes a lot better with this one as the red is still the focus with the cooler tones popping up in her tights and jacket. i'm not sure about the shoes or shirt. 7/10

i love primarina but miku's outfit not so much. the tanlines are a fun idea but i just wish they'd been more creative for the water type than just a swimsuit. the hair and hat are pretty nice though, i like how the water texture on the hair, hairstyle and white eyelashes match her pokemon. 5/10 she's 16

yeeehaw miku !!!! this one really looks like a trainer you'd fine in one of the games. the rubber boots and engineer outfit combo'd with the rodeo motif works surprisingly well. honestly no notes 9/10 just because rotom feels a bit random

ABSOLUTE FAVORITE. best miku out of all of them imo. chatot is such a fun choice and i love how they match. everything about this outfit is just so FUN! the colors pop and all the accessories are so cute! love how her hair tails off like feathers. beautiful excellent showshopping 10/10

suit is awesome. i like the tiny bits of lime green they really add some much needed color to the greys and desaturated blues of the rest of the outfit. the hair and shoes matching is cute. this miku looks very professional 8/10 don't give her a boob window

i love aurorus so i was pretty bummed that this outfit was a bit of a nothingburger. she looks more like an ice type trainer than a rock type, which is especially obvious when this one released after the lapras one. to me at least, aurorus is a predominantly ice type with rock just being there because it's a fossil. the circus thing is fun but this doesn't do it for me. 4/10

everybody loved this one so its no surprise i do too. flygon is another one of my absolute favourite pokemon and she matches well with it. i like the cactus hair and the cape. this would look more like a grass trainer if it wasn't for the muddy texture on her pants, the brown in the headscarf + hair and the tears on her cape. 9/10 we're losing a bit of mikuness with this one

it's okay. i like the transparent material on the sleeves and shorts. not sure what's happening with the legs but the legwarmers are cute. i like the hair gradient 6/10 nothing really wrong with it it's just not a very standout design

I started doing recolors of @leaf-motif's Rory mattress and @peacemaker-ic's layered bedding for personal use, and now I'm on a rampage. I ended up also doing the Rory bedframe in wood, and I'm halfway through doing the nightstand too. I might do the whole set, lol. Just wanted to show y'all what I've done so far.

Rory bed frame and mattress, using peacemaker-ic's wood tones. I need to figure out how to make the bed frame less shiny, but overall I like it! Nightstand not pictured because I'm still working on it.

Layered bedding (the bed frame is peacemaker-ic's, I did not recolor it).

My vibe is like bohemian cottagecore so that's what I'm going for with these. I am going to add so many more swatches to these beds.

Anyway, as long as I don't ADHD this project and forget about it in a week, I'd like to do coordinating sets with the bedding, curtains, and rugs as well. We will see.

Have you reviewed avalugg yet?

Bergmite is one of those Pokemon that I find adorable but I rarely hear other people call out as such. Look at its little eyes, tiny feet, and little zig-zag mouth! What a cutie.

Conceptually, it's basically just an iceberg as a Pokemon, but it pulls it off well—the yellow and purple eyes pop and tie into Avalugg's colors, the ice has a chipped cragginess that really looks natural, and the white underbelly adds a bit of visual distinction. It's super simple, but very enjoyable.

Bergmite evolves into Avalugg here, basically going from an iceberg to a continental ice flow, which is the thing icebergs usually break off of. That works well thematically and makes it look a lot more powerful than its pre-evo, and while the two are pretty different, they're still similar enough that you can tell they belong to the same line. Also, the way it carries Bergmite on its back is cute.

Visually, I once again like how natural it looks, especially with the crevices on its back. This creates a distinctive visual motif as well. The way the pointed head matches the pointed tail to create an overall diamond-shaped body is also pretty neat.

My only nitpick is that those random white diamonds on the sides of its head look terrible, aren't needed, and break up the flow of the design. Also, I kind of wish the underside was white like Bergmite, just because it would make it easier to read. Still, a fine design.

Hisuian Avalugg is an interesting regional. Adding rock-typing was a strange choice because it makes it even worse than its original form instead of better, even if the basic idea of it being land covered in ice isn't bad. I feel like they could've at least gone ice/ground or something.

Regardless, the design is fine. I really like how they extended the random out-of-place diamonds on the side of its face into two pretty cool looking "tusks" of sort that work as a snow shovel. I also like how the brown lower body contrasts sharply against the light blue ice, in contrast to the mostly monotone original design.

The only thing I don't really like is the body shape. It being sort of a pointed ellipse just doesn't look all that natural, and I can't help but wish it was more rugged. I almost wonder if it couldn't have had some outcroppings on the back, which would've both hearkened back to Bergmite and also would've make it look a bit mountain-esq. Other than that, it's a decent regional.

Anyway, overall, some pretty decent 'mons. Bergmite is downright adorable, and both of Avalugg's forms are pretty solid ice monsters. Nothing super crazy, but perfectly competent and enjoyable.

One Piece Live Blog: Episode 49 and Chapter 98

Does Luffy even need to worry about falling? Knowing him, he's probably sweating more from the fact he would have had to start over. Again, we see Luffy lacking creativity in dealing with a problem. He should know by now that he can just haul himself up to the platform with ease. It's not like he cares if people know he's got the Gum Gum power.

Yeah, Luffy was always going to be fine with that XD

Wait. What in the world?

Okay, so he extends his leg behind the platform . . .

Smoker dodges it . . .

It wraps around the fountain.

Then here's when things get awkward. Luffy's left the frame even though we're seeing both points of his leg.

Now we're seeing him spinning around in the air in a really weird trajectory.

I think the animators just kinda dropped the ball here. I might know more after reading today, but I think what they were trying to show is Luffy's leg having wrapped around the fountain, when it unwound it caused him to spin through the air and get flung. But they either ran out of time or money to animate that, so they just repeated the scene where the leg got wrapped, then part of the animation for the kick, then just kinda move a cell around over the backdrop to try and depict it. Ouch! Won't lie, this looks really bad!

Sanji . . . Imma slap you. Yeah, she's not the one you're looking for, but you could have been a bit more polite there. Plus she's still really cute.

Also seriously! How can you miss that heart motif?

Oh! This actually fits really well! Buggy is using poker cards to do a reading. Fortune tellers were big in circuses back in the day. So this is a good thing to add to his motif.

Yeah, he really doesn't do fall damage.

So here we're establishing her right away as the Sergeant Major of this Division.

I'm a little surprised here, but not too surprised. Zoro is probably really hesitant to get involved with the Navy again. But he's still an upstanding guy. He's going to pay the Sergeant Major back, even if this is how he has to do it.

I find it interesting they did the whole thing with the glasses and the Navy office and then still did the swords, but the Sergeant Major still doesn't recognize him. I'm curious why they felt the need to add more to this arc.

I like how they're going about all cloaked, except for our "mystery" woman, but Richie is just out in the open XD

Here, Sanji has given up on pursuing our "mystery" lady, and is instead actually getting some shopping done.

Also, we're just jumping right into it! Looks like we've got some serious Shonen padding going on in the anime. We're getting right to who our "mystery" woman actually is. And wow is she laying it on thick! She's clearly enjoying the attention she was obviously craving before.

So our new Devil Fruit is the Slip-Slip Fruit. Apparently this prevents her from being struck and has also changed her physical appearance, though she of course only considers it the loss of a few freckles. We're also jumping straight to the sudden, but inevitable betrayal. She wants Luffy as her man. But she's going to let Buggy get his shot at him at least.

Well that certainly wasn't a thing. No real art or anything for it either. Just, "Whoops, Cabaji caught a Luffy!"

"White Chase" Smoker, huh? And apparently, this isn't a Division but Navy HQ. Smoker's also not lone wolfing it here. Instead he's actually deploying his men to make sure the pirates don't make a get away. We still spare some time for "My pants ate up all your ice cream," though. Oda knows the Navy hasn't looked good throughout the bulk of his manga so far. Smoker needs his moment to establish he isn't like the goons we've seen so far.

We have a slightly more Naval title for Tashigi here, as Master Chief Petty Officer. My understanding is Master Chief is an honorary title outside of the normal chain of command. I'm still not even close to convinced this isn't Kuina. But I want to know what the story is here.

And with everyone meeting up for the confrontation, I'm going to have to pause the manga for a bit XD

In the anime we have another story going on with Usopp in the next episode. Instead of just helping with the shopping, it looks like he's going to have to fight his own bounty hunter. Usopp is an amazing shot when he needs to be, but that tends to only be in practice or when someone else's butt is on the line. I'm curious to see how that will go down.

I'll pick up the manga again when we get to the fight at the scaffold.
