Hi. Look at this.
I just spent two days straight making a digital conspiracy board trying to piece together my favourite genre that isn't really a genre and more just a very particular niche which doesn't really have a name.
If you want to look I reccomend downloading and zooming in on the image to read everything LMAO, I want to try and convert it to a page on my neocities at some point so its easier to view but for now you guys just get a big ol' jpeg. You're welcome :)
#THIS IS ALL ABOUT ME TRYING TO LIKE BREAK DOWN A SUB-GENRE I'VE NOTICED like thats the main thing i'm trying to do here#its so broad but also so specific and trying to explain it is hard#so i made this#welcome to my twisted mind etc#just realised i forgot to include Long Exposure :(#i'm actually posting this a day later cause it was like 4am when i finished this#gravity falls#psychonauts#coraline#paranorman#sequel post to my one from a few days ago which got way more notes than i expected asedrjthgdrf???#this is a wip also i still wanna edit things and add things later#need to improve my silly lil' sticker labelling system#mystery kids#should i tag a few more of the things i included? at least the bigger things???? uhh#i'll tag#scooby doo#at the very least since i dedicated a whole corner to them#fandom conspiracy board#is that a thing is this a thing people normally do#idk#it's satisfying though i like it#enrichment for me :)

Who is she talking about? Literally any of the people who tried to harm the camp fam.
#twdg#camp cretaceous#twdg clementine#jwcc darius#i think we're gonna have to kill this guy#11-12 year olds from drastically different genres and content ratings dealing with asshole adults#Sorry I played S2 Clem as a little menace cause it was funny.#This is just something silly cause the idea of specifically S2 Clem interacting with the Nublar 6 was something I kept thinking about lol.#I think they would be friends.#This is so stupid. I need to draw more of them lol.

Feeling conflicted about the cyberpunk thingy impulse is going for because like yeah it’s a great theme and I like the aesthetics a lot but what I really like most about cyberpunk is the themes of corporate alienation and/or transhumanism etc etc which I know will not be addressed at all and in fact it’s kind of stupid of me to expect that at all from a minecraft series. Does anyone else get that or just me
#this is an issue I’ve been having with mcyt content in general you know. not ragging on impulse specifically#it’s just… I find it difficult to reconcile the quality of narrative focused mcyt content with its complete lack of commentary#should it have commentary? I believe it could if it wanted to. I don’t think it has to#but then you see these genres being… skinned and worn as cloaks#taking the aesthetics and story without any of the meaning behind it#and when it was just Minecraft builds that was expected. I guess it is still expected and I’m being a huge snob#but like. mcyt narrative is so fucked from a quality standpoint. you can’t even have villains who are other mcyters because people#will get mad at them#is that an unrelated issue? maybe. but I don’t think so#idk. mcyters aren’t expected to be storytellers and they don’t need to be#but I see these things happen over and over again and it’s just uncanny to see something that walks like a story talks like a story#but at the same time has absolutely nothing of value to say#it’s very early on so maybe there will be something done with this concept but I doubbbt it. I would be very pleasantly surprised#astro speaks#hermitcraft#not putting this in the impulse tag cause he would be more likely to see it#and I don’t want him to feel like he has to address this at all#it’s more just me noticing a trend

My current favourite genre of Thing is a piece that critiques the ideologies and general facade of the 1980s but is still, unabashedly, a product of the 1980s.
They Live has a really creative perspective of Reagan-era consumerism amidst a recession. The main character spits out cheesy one-liners and has a really big mullet.
“Love for Sale” by Talking Heads pokes fun at the materialistic values of the 80s by utilising ad slogans as the lyrics. It’s built on a gated reverb drum beat.

Can we get some book recommendations by any chance? 🎤
OF COURSE!!!!! i made a little book rec post a while back, but i …. can’t find it :’) so. i’m just gonna mention a few of those same books again <333
if i had to narrow my list down, i’d say my favorite books atm are beartown, eureka street and kafka on the shore ….. i say that very hesitantly though because 1) my memory is very bad and it’s been a while since i read them 2) i have many books on my tbr that i think will shoot up the rankings…………..
but yeah!!!! beartown is … probably my favorite book of all time and i will recommend it to the ends of the earth. it’s very heavy though!!!! content wise. and it’s long. but like, really easy to read because you just get sucked up into it. it’s about a small town that stays alive through its hockey team!!! but it’s not really about hockey . more about culture in general. family, friends, sports — etcetc!! i would absolutely look up the cws for this one though because it did give me a crisis 😭 it’s a really devastating book. but it means the world to me. backman’s writing is sooo pretty and i applaud him for carrying swedish literature on his back because god knows most of it sucks 🙏🙏
eureka street is, at its core, a love story <3 with a lot of humour sprinkled in. but it takes place right at the end of the irish troubles, with bombings and death all around, and it paints … a very vivid picture of those troubles. right in the middle of the book it switches genre for a chapter and is like……. devastatingly detailed & grim. only to switch back immediately after. it gave me chills bc the book just. does suchhh a good job of showing how desensitized you get to war and conflict after a while . but again, it really is mostly a story about love!!! and wilson’s writing is soooooo gorgeous i was fuming with anger while reading because i was so jealous 💀
kafka on the shore is another looong one and it’s also super weird, murakami is a freak, i don’t like him, unfortunately his writing is also gorgeous . i could give you tws for this one but we’d be here for a while. cat beheadings, sexual assault (almost)(in a dream), fantasy incest? (maybe?)(maybe not?)(it’s up for interpretation), etc. it’s so weird. but that’s exactly why it makes for such a wonderful coming of age story……. murakami likes to play around with the line between fantasy and reality and i think he does it sooooo so well . if you enjoy magic realism you’ll probably enjoy this book. the vibes are also very tasty in general……. the writing 😔…………… (<- is jealous)
…… also . this is a poetry collection not a novel but i need to recommend war of the foxes at any given opportunity………. richard siken you are the love of my life…. his crush collection is suuuuuper good too but i think i prefer wotf just a teeny tiny bit
#if you’re looking for classics then my favs are the stranger (camus) and the great gatsby!!!!!#i have some other misc recs but … i am eepy…..#grrrr i really need to start reading more ://// feels like my list is very outdated……#all of these books are ….. pretty heavy huh#😭😭 sorry anon .#let me know if there’s a specific genre you want recs for!!!!#and ty for asking <3 i love all three of these… i really do…..#ask tag ✩#books ✩

rant about dib and him being white-passing in the show (while still being mexican) under the cut
#breakingmysilence i actually like that dib is pasty and mexican at the same time (in the series). i like that if you look at him you will literally never guess that he has any bit of culture in him. i like that he's whiter than snow at first glance. and i like that he's still mexican nonetheless. because people like that exist, i look white but that's because im mixed, my dad was puerto rican with the features and everything. he tried to get me more into our culture but my mom's side of the family wouldn't let him. thats off topic but you get it. ive gotten into arguments with people over my skin because i told them i was puerto rican and they thought i was rcta or some bullshit. they thought i was literally lying. that's what i thought when i heard that dib was mexican. until i thought about it more and i was like "oh. thats how people feel about me. im enforcing stereotypes that people have to look their race to be their race" and i accepted it immediately. because we don't, we don't have to look our race to have the privilege of identifying with it, we don't have to grow up in a household that's stereotypically assigned to our race to say that we are that race, we can't control that. it's not about that. its about our genetics and that is it. if you're half black, you can say you're black. if you're chinese you can say you're chinese. even if you dont have those features you still are. it doesn't matter what you look like. i feel like we don't get that enough in media, which is why i like that dib looks white so much.
tldr: we don't choose our features or our skin tones, just because somebody LOOKS white doesn't mean they are and i like that we get that with dib.
#dib membrane#dib iz#iz dib#rant#iz#invader zim#ive had this in my head for a few days now but i can finally put it into words#i feel like we need more rep for this genre of character in media#for every character that doesn't appear to be the race that they are there's like 20 that do (specifically in modern media)#maybe im just looking at things that came out recently or im just not finding the right media#but i still feel like it should exist more in new media too#you know what im gonna do im gonna make a human zim design and make him the pastiest motherfucker ever#and then make him puerto rican#because he's literally me#and we need more characters like that#and its my design#and i can do what i want#and nobody can stop me#MWAHAHAHAHAHAAA

how did i not know there was an amnesia: memories musical..... an entire decade ago...................................................
#actually really difficult to find english language info about it. it seems they had like#a system where each performance had a different ending for the different boys LOL#so if you wanted to see kents ending youd have to come on a specific day etc#there was a dvd release which appears to have all the endings included which is neat. another reason to practice my japanese#id definitely like to check out the songs specifically. you know im already tracking down the cd. you KNOW#i do love amnesia. not the greatest game. theres complications with the artist too LOL#but it was a WILD ass game. especially for my first full otome game i had ever played#i still havent played anything else with this intense genre whiplash between routes#i didnt care much for shins romance but i loved his route because it was straight up just a mystery thriller#tomas was a horror and it was awesome obvs#kents was like a sweet and nice little romantic drama#ikki was like a normal showbiz drama complete with darker elements but also hes an accountant for some reason instead of a celebrity#which is really funny to me HKJDSHJKLDADSd and ukyos his own thing going on. his own intensely otome game-ass thing <3#it was awesome. i need to play more otome games again so many have been released in the past couple years#i need my tonal and genre whiplash. i neeeeeeeeeed it

helloooo! i've been following your writing/coding journey since the early days of sentinel and it's been so nice watching your story-telling blossom into a masterpiece. i love project hadea a lot and the characters are all so compelling i always have trouble choosing who to romance (rohan refuses to kiss me lmao). forgive me if you've been asked this question a million times already, but i was wondering what are some of your literary inspirations? what sort of writing shaped your style? it's one that i wish i could achieve one day tbh!!
WAH this is so kind of you 🥺
i'm sure i've spoke before about some of my inspirations but i am always happy to do it again:)
my writing style tends to go through phases- i feel like i write hadea slightly differently to some of my other projects, particularly the shorter ones. often, when I'm going for something poetic, i can't maintain that for as long, or i feel like it gets effortful; some authors seem able to maintain a really lovely style for long-form works. i'd say max gladstone (and there's no way you've followed me this long without seeing me talk about him before lmfao), julia armfield (who wrote our wives under the sea), louise erdrich (the painted drum, the antelope wife) are all authors whose prose particularly sticks out to me as something i'd like to emulate.
i'll also have to shout out adrian tchaikovsky and peter watts as scifi authors who manage to maintain a very effortless, easy to read style while writing hard scifi; it's not easy to do, but they pull it off, often with clarity and humour i really admire. and their work is not without poetry! i also really like adrian tchaikovsky's tendency to skew sharply into and out of horror: he's got such a knack for atmosphere and tone, something that really stands out to me whenever i read his work.
i'm trying to read more nonfiction/autobiography type stuff, as well: i recently finished billy-ray belcourt's 'a history of my brief body', and in the summer i read ocean vuong's 'on earth we're briefly gorgeous' (which is fiction, but in a similar vein); I'm hoping to read more joan didion this year, as well. i think reading stuff like this is a good way to develop both empathy and also an interesting study in tackling highly personal emotional stuff, and in a lot of cases i do feel i can learn a lot from the prose of these works.
i also read quite a bit of poetry, in itself, which i think helps; i like my writing to have a rhythm to it, and i tend to find that reading poetry helps a lot with that.
finally, as i think i've mentioned before, i love the magnus archives and the writing in that: i think that writing stuff that's meant to be read out loud/performed is a really interesting exercise, even if that's not the final goal, and it really helps to develop a sense of rhythm for your prose.
#i try to read as widely as i can#obviously i have favourite genres. i'm a scifi bitch at heart#but i do tend to chameleon my writing style after the last thing i read#so it can be quite variable#and i'm not as vigilant as i could be about reading back my own writing#i also wanna get into more surreal fiction. i need to read house of leaves sooooo badly#if u want specific recs i can do that but i've listed a bunch of authors i've read in the last year i find inspiring:)#hope this answers your question a little bit!#therosejamjournal#thank you for asking<33 and for saying nice things to me MWAH

You know Henriette is lowkey kind of anime (like the SuMo anime) Lusamine-core. To me
#a lot of people were frustrated obvs w the changes made to lusamine after og sumo and i def see it#and i DEF agree w it regarding ultra sumo. but i actually do kind of like the direction they took#w anime lusamine. like yeah it was a huge departure from the games. but given the context/genre of the anime#it didn't feel like a retcon? it felt more like they had to make adjustments to her to fit the very#slice of life comedy direction the sumo anime took. and there were still intense and emotional#story beats/arcs for the aether family too.#and i think the changes to lusamine actually complimented the changes to lillie#who's main conflict/struggle is her intense fear of touching pokemon due to trauma#so like! lillie is still traumatized! and for a slice of life comedy one big struggle is enough.#she didn't need an abusive controlling parent on top of that LMFAOOO (save that conflict for game lillie#esp cause in game her whole arc centers around that)#man i actually don't remember why gladion was a runaway in the anime though now that i think about it.#but like for the entire maybe one person who follows me and has the pokemon sumo/feh overlap interest#does this make sense????????? i feel like it does#i actually don't know if i have any followers who have that overlap. i feel like you're either here for feh/askr sibs specifically#or you had the misfortune of finding me in a brief bout of pokemon fixation and have discovered. oh#oh you BARELY post pokemon actually LMFAOOO you're just insane over some blue hair and pronouns bitch#and sharena 😇💖#fe henriette

Just so you don't get too-high expectations - there's not really big branching paths or anything like that loop-to-loop. Stuff changes, but it's not like a tree of choices with huge impacts. My partner got very frustrated at the limited choices because she had previously played DBH and Life is Strange and expected something similar (way beyond the scope of an RPGmaker game with one writer). I've also seen people get frustrated at 'unfair' deaths in the story because they went into it expecting a roguelike's fair challenge and got a visual novel in the shape of an RPG instead. Also, there's a couple things early on that almost everyone misses, so I'll let you know. Firstly, there's three Loop chats that are only available when you have done something 2-3 times, 4-8 times, and 13+ times respectively. It's a once per loop thing and you haven't seen it yet. If you lock yourself out of a chat you can still get the later ones. Secondly, there's a secret room - many people find it at some point, but there's interesting dialogue in it in Act 2.
...we think that you presenting "visual novels" as something that doesn't imply that your actions will have a branching tree of consequences with huge impacts that may also include a large amount of scenes locked to obscure and strange combinations of actions that may or may not lock certain things behind them is messing with our brain a bit, sorry.
Maybe it's because of the specific visual novels we're playing, but we're fairly used to them having adjacent staples to older point-and-click games, just with less things to click - which, uhh, older point and click games are actually one of the main genres we enjoy, and probably where we picked up the foundation of our problem solving. The fact that DOSbox is on our desktop probably dates us quite a bit, though we only really remember where a handful of the games we have that work on that currently are.
We quite enjoy visual novels. We've played quite a few of them, they lend themselves well to writing in formats we quite like, and make it very easy to break down where to poke to find certain things. We are also very very used to visual novels having alternate routes and extremely elaborate unlock requirements for those routes. We also use this same sort of technique when we play text-based RPGs, or similar. We spend a lot of time exploring alternative routes for, uhh, pretty much anything - the difference between RPGs and visual novels tends to just be that in the visual novel, the secret might-lock-your-whole-game-if-not-picked-up option is an option that clearly pops up on the screen, rather than a missable pixel on the floor.
...if you can list the things that we need to do 2-3 times/4-8 times/13+ times when they turn up so that we don't accidentally lock ourselves out of conversations, it would be appreciated. We'd rather not run ourself into a wall too early - we'd like all the dialogue we can get! Also, if there's any dialogue that's locked behind stuff like staring at barrels, we've already failed the 2-3 times requirement and the 4-8 times requirement, we've checked literally every barrel in the game that we have access to. Some multiple times.
#asks#we speak#not liveblog#lukiyu#the fact that we actively enjoy old point and click adventure games probably explains a lot about us in general actually#anyways we know that VNs are the Dating Sim Genre we just play enough of them that we're very used to like#a LOT of the “you must make absolutely sure that youre at THIS POINT in THIS RELATIONSHIP to view this scene” type shit#though we sit in the specific niche that overlaps with text-based rpg so maybe thats a sign or something#a lot of the more complex visual novels are not safe for work but in our experience the especially tangled ones tend to be uhh#also made by a single guy. just a single guy on itch.io using ren'py rather than a single guy on steam using rpgmaker#something something “if you want to get really good at something then you need to find really specific perverts” effect#this thoroughness is ALSO why we're keeping multiple saves as unfortunately space quest has instilled much thoroughness in us#puzzle games. visual novels. text based rpgs. with their powers combined we are unreasonably thorough about exploring every available avenu#no matter how obscure or just fucking bizarre to explore#anyways we miss point and click adventure games we wish that they got made more often again#though if this isn't going to have roguelike apects in the climb we may have to wind up purposefully killing siffrin to get all dialogue
