National Eating Disorder Awareness Week - Diabulimia
CW // Disordered eating
(click for better quality)
Transcript Below
Diabulimia- Diabulimia is the informal term for an eating disorder specific to type 1 diabetics in which someone with the disorder intentionally restricts their insulin in order to lose weight. Although not listed as an official diagnosis in the DSM-V, it is an incredibly prevalent and dangerous eating disorder.
Type 1 Diabetes- Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disorder of the pancreas. Typically, the pancreas secretes insulin, a hormone that takes glucose from the blood and moves it into cells in order to be used as energy. However, in T1D, the body attacks itself and destroys the cells that secrete insulin. Without insulin, glucose from food sits around in the blood and builds up– causing a condition called hyperglycemia.¹ There’s currently no cure for T1D, so patients with the condition need to take insulin as injections or delivered through an insulin pump. T1D is irreversible, and life long, so patients need to take insulin for the rest of their lives.¹ T1D and type 2 diabetes (T2D) are not the same. In T2D, the pancreas still has insulin secreting cells; however, the body can’t properly use the insulin due to a high level of insulin resistance.² Because of the differences between T1D and T2D, diabulimia can only occur in those with T1D.
Insulin Restriction- In the absence of insulin, glucose can’t enter cells and instead stays in the bloodstream. Eventually, the body attempts to flush out excess glucose through urine– leading to severe dehydration. Since cells can’t get energy from glucose in this scenario, they instead try to get it from other sources– the body’s muscles and fat stores begin to be broken down for energy. This state is biologically the same as starvation as calories from food in the form of glucose are leaving the body before being used. The loss of calories and breakdown of fat and muscle, coupled with the loss of water weight from dehydration, lead to rapid weight loss.³ In diabulimia, insulin is restricted intentionally with the goal to lose weight.
DKA- In the short term, diabulimia leads to frequent urination and severe dehydration, immense fatigue and nausea and vomiting.³ If left untreated, these high blood sugars will eventually lead to a condition called Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA). DKA occurs when fat is broken down in the body. The breakdown of fat releases acidic compounds called ketones. Eventually, with enough build up of ketones, the blood itself becomes acidic and may eventually lead to coma or death.⁴ DKA must be treated in a hospital setting; and as such, is often the way that diabulimics are first treated for their eating disorders.
Health Consequences- Consistently high blood sugars will eventually lead to severe diabetic complications such as neuropathy (nerve damage), retinopathy (damage to the retinas in the eyes) or kidney disease.³ While long term health effects like eye damage and kidney disease are already common complications for those with T1D, diabulimia significantly increases the risk for these complications. A Japanese study found that insulin restriction was the most significant factor in developing retinopathy and kidney disease; meaning that these complications were more strongly correlated with insulin restriction than other factors such as how long someone had been diagnosed with T1D.⁵
Prevalence and Risk- When compared to girls without T1D, those in the same age range that were diagnosed with T1D were around 2.4 times more likely to have an eating disorder ⁶ One study that surveyed 112 teens with T1D found that around 27% restricted insulin dosages ⁷ An 11-year study found that those with T1D who restricted insulin had a risk of death 3.2 times higher than diabetics who did not ⁸
Why I'm Making This- Accessing treatment for diabulimia is incredibly difficult. When I first began to look for inpatient eating disorder treatment, I was turned down from every residential and inpatient facility in my state. The only reason I got into a residential that time was because my mom is a very determined and very convincing woman (she threatened to sue them). And that isn’t even accounting for the lack of diabulimia specific treatment. My last time in treatment, the hospital I was at recommended I enter inpatient; however, there ended up being only a few inpatient centers with diabulimia experience in my country-- the closest one rejected me because they couldn’t find an endocrinologist to oversee my diabetes care. This lack of treatment is especially dangerous with how severe the health consequences of diabulimia are. In fact, since beginning work on this infographic, I found out I may have kidney damage. Yes, as a result of diabulimia. I also have permanent eye damage, neuropathy, and I’m finally (3 months after leaving the hospital) recovering from the short term health consequences of my disorder. And even I am luckier than a lot of other diabulimics. With a disease so prevalent, and so, so dangerous, you’d think there would be enough support in treating it. But there isn’t. Largely I think, because most people simply don’t know that it exists. My only hope with making this infographic is that we can change that.

Hello.
I'm not sure if this is related to autism at all, but I wanted to ask in case you had any advice or resources to offer. I struggle with having a really limited diet / being super picky. Especially when I'm in a crisis I seem to only have a couple foods I can eat. I take supplements but I still feel quite sick and not eating enough in a day has a bad effect on my mental health as well.
I don't intentionally skip meals but I feel entirely unable to eat anything that isn't the 2-3 foods I can handle at the moment. I feel like I'd rather skip the meal than force myself into eating something I feel almost ''afraid'' of.
The foods I can eat aren't really nutritious ( protein is something I find myself lacking in my diet, as well as fiber ), and can be a little bit pricey. I feel like I should be able to just ''get over'' my pickiness but i can't.
Hi there,
It sounds like you’re dealing with AFRID (avoidant food restrictive intake disorder). I have this too, and it makes trying/eating new foods very difficult and uncomfortable, especially foods that have changed. (Like a company starts/changes to using a certain ingredient instead of the original one). I found some sources about ARFID if you’re interested. One article states:
Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a condition that causes you to limit the amount and type of food you eat. It isn’t the result of a distorted self-image or an attempt to lose body weight, which is common among other eating disorders.
ARFID can cause you to:
• Lose interest in eating.
• Feel anxious about the consequences of eating, like choking on food or vomiting.
• Avoid foods that have an unwanted color, taste, texture or smell.
Here are some more articles if you’re interested:
I hope this helps answer your question. Thank you for the inbox. I hope you have a wonderful day/night. ♥️

Official BakuDeku content because the brain rot is rotting
This is 4 silly funsies btw so if u don't ship bakudeku plz don't jump me :(
Official Ship Art
One of Horikoshi's assistants Noguchi (@/nstime23) posts A LOT of bakudeku art on their twt which, since she publicly works on the manga and Horikoshi follows her account, he definitely knows she makes this.
In BNHA Smash, an official spin-off of BNHA that's approved by Horikoshi and made by another one of his assistants, Hirofumi Neda, there's a running joke that Deku is a yandere who stalks Katsuki and is obsessed with him "noticing him", even blushing when Katsuki praises him.
To promote the new movie, Horikoshi drew Katsuki dressed as Godzilla and Izuku dressed as Mothra. In the Godzilla series, Godzilla and Mothra are a couple and are referred to as the king and queen of monsters.
Katsuki calls himself Kacchan before killing himself for him... Speaks for itself.
When Tomura kills Katsuki, he specifically said that he did it because of Izuku's "sheer fury" when he nearly killed him, funny since Tomura not only hurt but killed other people Izuku was close to.
In a set of official licensed poker cards for the series. Izuku represents the Ace of Hearts, Katsuki represents the Ace of Diamonds and together, they represent the King of Hearts.
Medieval AU
In the outro song for the second season of the anime (Datte Atashi no Hero), the songwriter Risa Oribe said that the lyrics are Izuku’s true feelings for Katsuki and with lyrics like “If you're facing a monumental effort, one that comes once in a lifetime, I want to be there to see it” and “No matter how many fools there are in this world, I'll always be by your foolish side” it sorta speaks for itself lol.
youtube
Also, in the cover page of Chapter 214, it shows that All Mights buster sword from the original fantasy spread has been split in two, and that Katsuki and Izuku are each wielding the two halves.
Steampunk AU
In the mobile game, they celebrated the 3rd anniversary of the game by having a plot with Izuku convincing Katsuki to celebrate their anniversary. Doing this event would give you a bunch of heart balloons and flowers with a number 3 balloon.
For the 2020 Steampunk-themed popularity poll art (the cover of Chapter 293), Izuku and Katsuki seem to be wearing each other's shoes for some reason.
Sakura Season Stuff 🌸
For the first image, there's a superstition in Japan that if you catch three sakura petals while they're falling, your wish for love will come true, but you need to be with your crush at the time for it to work.
For the second image, cherry blossoms generally represent new beginnings which makes perfect sense with these two, because after years of rivalry, they're now friends and deeply care for each other, especially since this came out around the same time as chapter 424, where the war they fought together in is now officially over and they're starting their second year of UA together.
White Day
For anyone like me who has never heard of this, White Day is a holiday in Japan that takes place on the day after Valentine's Day, where you're supposed to give someone you love gifts to repay them for giving you gifts on Valentine's Day. Now, with this context, look at their matching white day cards where one has a bag of cookies and the other has a tray of them.

Okay I'm a blabber, I cave, I wanna talk about the rewrite with y'all
Spoilers for the REWRITE, obv, but if you do read through, please let me know what you think (good or bad, I won't be hurt I promise)
*please note that fae are not immortal in the rewrite and each current HL is either the child or grandchild of the ruler who was alive during the War
*also, pre- Amarantha's rule, the Courts were ruled by Kings and Queens, during her rule they call themselves HLs but their heirs are still called Princes and Princesses
*if I use the word Aspect and you either can't remember or have never seen me explain the REWRITE lore, just know it's basically a magical saint kinda
I'll add the map at the end because I'm shy and because it's very chaotic - no one is surprised, just know that I can't draw lol
Seasonal Courts
Spring
Spring has two rivers that start on each end of the continent, Lixus and Neda, and they intercept and form an island. This site is holy to the Spring Court and it's where they hold Rites like Calanmai
Tamlin is the only son of Prince Lachlan and Lady Roisin.
(his brothers don't exist in this, sorry)
During the build up to the War, the elderly King Iain didn't want to pick a side but when Lachlan saw that Jurian was basically at their border, he challenged his father to an ancient Spring Rite in the form of a duel and won
Lachlan bargained with Amarantha because he believed her to be an Aspect, giving up a drop of his power, and relinquishing his title.
Tamlin did not share his father's beliefs.
Spring remains the only court in open rebellion.
Autumn
During the war Autumn was ruled by King Sebastian Vanserra
He died in battle defending the humans but Autumn suffered severe casualties, their armies were in disarray and the King's heir was just shy of adulthood
So an upstart lower noble and a brilliant tactician named Beron stepped in, rallied the armies to retreat, convinced Princess Delphine to bargain with Amarantha (certain they couldn't win against her) and became regent
Delphine would bear 5 sons though only 3 are still alive: Eris, Marcel and Lucien
She holds court for the nobility from Vancour, the Forest House, while Marcel oversees things like trade from the city of Ambreville.
Beron and Eris are both UtM
Summer
Summer and the UnderSea share the Isle of Adriata as a capital
During the war it was ruled by Queen Ceto who gave birth to the twins, Proteus and Nereus.
When Proteus realised and admitted he couldn't bow to Amarantha, even to save his people, he gave up his crown and became a commoner.
Prince Nereus fathered the twins, Cresseida and Varian but when he died, the power did not come to them
Instead it went to a young, half-merling man. The son of Proteus.
Winter
The young king of Winter went against his queen-mother's advice and bargained with Amarantha but while her son was away, Queen Aurora sunk the heart of the Court under the ice and turned the surface into a desolate tundra, leaving only the boarders habitable by anyone not born to Winter
The stubborn young king erected a city called Konigshaven and ruled from there
UtM, Winter is represented by the knight, Kallias who maintains that there is no way to force the hidden Court to the surface as no one is strong enough to challenge Queen Aurora
In reality, Aurora has been dead for decades and it is her granddaughter, High Lady Viviane who maintains the Frost
Kallias fought and won the honour to be her (secret) champion
*both Tarquin and Viviane have white hair because they are half merling but the trait is not universal in their courts
Lmao, sorry, I really can't draw so this is all I could do to visualise what I'm saying. This is half the map of Prythian on one A4 page
Ignore the mortal lands for now 💀

Living in the Philippines 2024 Essay by Words From Diona
What is it like living in a tropical country? Philippines is considered as an Asian country and its islands are surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and West Philippine Sea. Even though some Western countries colonized the Philippines in the past, the Philippines preserves some of its cultures, traditions, and resources. The citizens of the Philippines are called Filipinos. Filipinos are lucky to have various sources of materials which can be used in their lives. Nowadays, Filipinos have been facing difficulties in living. Living in the Philippines is challenging.
First, dealing with inflation is difficult. Essentials have high prices, but the wages remain low. People, especially the underprivileged, struggle to buy basic goods. According to a YouTube interview, a school canteen staff in the Philippines earns PHP 375 per day. Additionally, a report from NEDA stated that a Filipino person can survive in PHP 64 for three meals per day. This report has caused online discussions on different social media platforms and most of the Filipino netizens have found the report imaginary and ridiculous.
Second, commuting is exhausting and damaging. An ordinary Filipino, who commute every day, experiences mental and physical problems. A Filipino employee or student probably wakes up at 3:00 a.m. or 4:00 a.m. from Monday to Friday and struggles to queue for jeepneys, bus, or trains. Some people argue with each other for the sitting spot in any public transportation.
Third, pollution is awful. Some smoke and material waste from illegal factories continue to damage the environment. Moreover, while some Filipinos are not discipline enough to segregate trashes at homes, others throw trashes everywhere, especially in the rivers and canals. These problems make the country unattractive and dirty.
In conclusion, living in a tropical country like the Philippines is challenging. This is because there are existing problems such as struggles caused by inflation, commuting, and pollution. Therefore, the challenging life in the Philippines is not a good thing.

Chapter 9, part 3
We spent the day together just hanging out and talking. We looked through Ambeth’s book (or she did and we listened) and dug up some nasty secrets of celebrities. We hadn’t heard of Decker after he left and Treacher had isolated himself to his room.
I went to my room around midnight. It wasn’t optimal for my healing progress but I had lost my perception of time. As I was walking in the hallways I heard a thump below. I slid to the staircase quietly to see what was going on. I saw Decker who looked rough. Like he’d been in a fight and his usually flawless suit had dust all over it. His red glasses had a crack on the other side and he looked oddly annoyed. I had never seen him in that kind of state and there were some new scars on his face. Fresh.
Another person entered the room. It was Neda who also looked like she had seen some things. Her face and other parts of her doll-body had cracks. Her curly hair was messy and she didn’t have her eyes in place. I wanted to go and hug Neda but I didn’t think she would have appreciated it in that state. They both needed to rest for a while I assumed and went to my room.
I went to sleep with a good feeling. Neda was safe, Decker was safe, I had a good day and I was healing. Carlton’s case was closed–
Just then I realised I didn’t know what exactly happened. I had forgotten to ask or even think about the situation. Did he die? Why was he in the state he was? Is he still out there?
My mind brought me back to the moment. The stuffy, thick air and the rotten and mouldy smell. Blood flooding in my ears, pain all over my body, painful cracks of my bones and that thump I heard before all went black. And the victorious fear in Treacher’s eyes. The writing on his skin. How did he follow me and what was the thing with the texts?
I thought I would sleep well tonight but I didn’t. My mind kept wandering and asking questions. At one point I had to get up and write them down.
“Things I need answers to:
How did Treacher remember me outside?
What happened to Carlton and Avery?
How did Carlton become so weak and why?
What happened to Neda?”

I fratelli Karamazov 1969 [EP1] - Ivan & Smerdjakov + at Katja's, the beginning of the three thousand rubles affair
As a farewell to 2023 and to a happy new year, I bring you... some more Karamazovian dramatics!
part one | part two | part three (you are here!)
Some sparse notes before the translated transcripts start under the cut: 1. usual disclaimer that I'm not a professional, just an amateur, and am doing this out of pure insanity -- if you want to discuss translation related things or have some corrections, my inbox is open and your thoughts are welcomed <3; 2. mild trigger warnings for (time appropriate): strongly implied slut shaming and more vague possibly mysoginistic remarks made by Smerdjakov about Grušen’ka -- i feel like Smerdjakov himself is sometimes made to fit into the evil gay "advisor" stereotype and that might not be everyone's cup of tea -- while I don't think these bits take anything away from the writing and actually contribute to paint a more vivid picture of the society and the time the work is set in, we must keep in mind that this is a 1969 adaptation of a 1860s novel and that there are things about it that might squick some nowdays; 3. I'm actually really sorry that this took me so long to finish, I've had the dialogues written down and a rough sketch of the translation sitting around for months and polishing it turned out to be an harder task that what I thought it would be. There's still some sentences I'm not 100% sure about, but done in this case is better than perfect, and it doesn't matter how much I mourn the formal you in english, I gotta learn to work without it; 4. that said, this time I relied in a couple of scene on a lot more stage directions than last time, I felt that some more prominent acting/staging choices, especially in the Ivan & Smerdjakov bit, were important enough to warrant a description -- Katja and Dmitrij's interaction I feel instead it relies on more subtle choices for its effect, that are harder to describe, especially on Katja's side, so left it more barebones to give the dialogue more space (so you should watch it to get the full effect, wink wink nudge nudge); 5. enjoy the insanity <33
Interpreters: Umberto Orsini as Ivan Karamazov, Antonio Salines as Smerdjakov, Neda Naldi as M. Chochlakova, Maria Grazia Antonini as Lisa Chochlakova, Carla Gravina as Katerina Ivanovna and Corrado Pani as Dmitrij Karamazov.
Original script by Diego Fabbri, directed by Sandro Bolchi.
You can follow watch the drama here on YT or here on RaiPlay -- I suggest the latter, it's free and it's the original source, but youtube's still there if you prefer.
[INT. – AT THE KARAMAZOV’S/IVAN’S ROOM] min. 14:19
(Ivan snaps his fingers from behind a screen – Smerdjakov enters: he’s here to help Ivan get dressed)
Smerdjakov: (with a servile tone – to keep in mind for all his dialogues: he never drops it) I’m not allowed to say certain things, as I’m just a servant who should only thank his master’s benevolence, but if I may risk a word it’s only because I’m devoted to you, Ivan Fëdorovič…
Ivan: (with a harsh tone – emphasis on devoted; he keeps up the commanding/angry tone until stated otherwise) I sincerely don’t understand why you should be devoted to me! – As you put it.
Smerdjakov: I like to hear you talk, Ivan Fëdorovič… when you’re arguing, downstairs, with your father–
Ivan: That’s rare!
Smerdjakov: (cont. – must note: as Smerdjakov is helping Ivan button the back of his waistcoat, they are talking in front of a mirror and the last piece of this line is spoken while they’re both looking at their reflection) Well, those times I… I never miss a word. Sometimes I even hide, I must confess, to not lose the flow of the conversation… and I can say that you don’t converse: you reason.
Ivan: Is the frac ready? – Did you iron the frac?!
Smerdjakov: Ironed, Ivan Fëdorovič: I overlooked the ironing myself because I don’t trust that muddler, Marfa, nor that hick Grigorj.
Ivan: (amused/sardonic – he’s putting on the cuntiest little round glasses) What is it – what would you have told me if you were allowed to speak freely?
Smerdjakov: Well, now maybe… I wouldn’t dare…
Ivan: You’re allowed! And don’t make me beg you…(grabs Smerdjakov by his hair and pulls him close) you’re cunning.
Smerdjakov: But maybe you already know, Ivan Fëdorovič–
Ivan: What should I know? (he releases Smerdjakov)
Smerdjakov: Dmitrij’s new sudden infatuation for Agrafena Aleksandrovna… they’re talking about it, in town, because Agrafena Aleksandrovna – Grušen’ka, you understand? – she has her own history, and those who have their own history are on everyone’s lips.
Ivan: It’ll be my brother Dmitrij’s usual whim.
Smerdjakov: Well… It may be something more. Certainly something different.
Ivan: Dmitrij has a fiancée.
Smerdjakov: The noble miss Katerina Ivanovna.
Ivan: (with a softer tone, almost dreamily, clearly he’s thinking about Katja) …and there is not a girl more fine nor fascinating – (back to the harsh tone; note that after this rise he softens a bit) so?!
Smerdjakov: And who might say the contrary… but this Grušen’ka, as those who know her say, looks like she might have other… other requirements. I’ve told you she has a history and, for a man as intelligent as you are, it’s all said.
Ivan: (laughs) The shoes – get the bone shoe horn, the long one.
Smerdjakov: (kneeling to put the shoes on Ivan, who is sitting on the bed) And then there’s more that’s riling Dmitrij up, there’s almost a challenge.
Ivan: The gossiper that you are…
Smerdjakov: (laughs) If it were gossip, I wouldn’t speak, Ivan Fëdorovič, but I can always stop here, if you prefer.
Ivan: And speak, then, say what you want to say.
Smerdjakov: For… this Grušen’ka has, how can I say it – given his age, fallen in love is a kind term, is it? – the master fell for her, too.
Ivan: What master?
Smerdjakov: (Smerdjakov looks up to Ivan) Ours – (he looks at the shoe he’s putting on Ivan) mine. Fëdor Pavlovič, you father, sir. (laughs) He’s fallen madly in love!
Ivan: (as he kicks Smerdjakov away, sending him sprawling on the ground) You’re a reptile!
Smerdjakov: I swear on everything I believe that this is the truth!
Ivan: And since you don’t believe in anything, you perjure!
Smerdjakov: (as he gets up to his feet) I guarantee you, Ivan Fëdorovič – the master confided in me, and I already had to run some tasks for him at that lady’s… I don’t badmouth: I confide in you, if you allow me, of course… Fëdor Pavlovič, despite his age, is gone for her to the point he even wishes to marry her – (reaching for Ivan) to this, we’ve come!
Ivan: (he gets up, puts distance between him and Smerdjakov again) Do the two know?
Smerdjakov: The two? – you mean, the father and the son? (as he gets Ivan’s frac and helps him wear it) I believe so, and this is, I think, the true reason for the hatred: no more the heritage. And it’s not yet said that the older one won’t have it his way, Dmitrij’s impetus notwithstanding – and I find him a handsome young man, a young man who should be liked, on the contrary: who is liked, undoubtedly; but this time, in this challenge, eh!, who knows? Because it looks like this Grušen’ka lights, how can I say, lights the amorous fantasy in more mature… elderly men; it’s one of her particularities, they say.
Ivan: (angry) Stop it! – (then, distraught) I have no more need for you, I’m ready.
Smerdjakov: The coat is downstairs, in the wardrobe. I’m sorry I upset you, Ivan Fëdorovič.
Ivan: (still distraught, upset) I’m only thinking about poor Katerina Ivanovna; ignorant, I suppose… (he scratches at the door frame with his fingernails) that upsets me.
*
[INT. – AT KATERINA IVANOVNA’S/BALLROOM] min. 19:52
(the scene opens with the camera following a waiter carrying a teacups tray through a moderately crowded ballroom; he stops by M. Chochlakova and Lisa)
Waiter: Please, madame.
M. Chochlakova: (takes one of the offered teacups) Thank you.
Waiter: Some tea, miss?
(Lisa shakes her head; the camera returns to following the movement of the waiter amongst Katja’s guests, until he passes by Katerina herself and Ivan and focuses on them – note: Ivan isn’t wearing his cunty glasses anymore, but he’s cuntily holding a cigarette)
Ivan: Yes, I am… I am worried for Dmitrij, the argument with my father over that damned heritage is exasperating him: he withdraws, he hides; we can’t find him for days and days. Do you see him?
Katja: I was hoping to have him with us today, I had a note delivered to his domicile but… who knows if he’ll show up. However, you don’t have to worry so, Ivan Fëdorovič: I know Dmitrij, I know what is troubling him at this moment. We need to let his agitation placate naturally. Why did he target his father so intensely – because now he needs money and he doesn’t have any, and he’s so proud he won’t borrow from anyone: and so he gets exasperated.
Ivan: So you think, Katerina Ivanovna, that money might pacify him.
Katja: No, it’s not the money that gives him peace. Dmitrij is the most generous man I have ever known, money obsesses him only because it lets him act fully free.
Ivan: (smiles) Mh, I admire your intelligence and your… extraordinary lucidity; I did not think that a woman in love could see with such clarity the man she loves.
Katja: I believe it is love that makes me see so clearly, for Mitja’s sake. I know the situation I find myself in.
Ivan: Do you know about… the news, too?
Katja: I know the news, too. (she spots Dmitrij, who just entered) There he is! (she turns back to Ivan, their faces are very close) He came.
(the camera cuts to Dmitrij, standing very still; at Katja’s aunt’s call he comes towards her and kisses her hand)
Katja’s aunt: Dmitrij Fëdorovič, don’t pretend to be a statue, come closer!
Lisa: I hoped you would bring along your brother Alëša…
Dmitrij: Don’t you know he walks a different path than us? And he’s serious about it, my little brother – he’s not like us, he doesn’t mistake the devil for holy water (he spots Ivan and Katja sitting together) Anyway, I see another member of the Karamazov family already preceded me, and is already here.
(to Katja’s aunt) You really want us all, eh?
Katja’s aunt: We would really like to have you all – because you’re pleasant, you Karamazovs.
Katja: (she stands up and walks towards her aunt) Aunt, I’ll let you have him all for yourself later, but may I speak to him for a moment first?
Katja’s aunt: Youths and feelings’ rights, I’ve always respected.
Katja: Dmitrij Fëdorovič, if you’ll follow me. (she exits with Dmitrij following)
(the scene cuts off with a shot of Ivan pensively about to take a drag of his cigarette, he seems to be following Katja and Dmitrij with his gaze)
[INT. – AT KATERINA IVANOVNA’S/KATJA’S ROOM] min. 23:07
Katja: Come, Mitja, come.
Dmitrij: Will it be a long talk? Maybe an explanation?
Katja: (rummaging through a vanity) No. No, I just have a favour to ask you Mitja; you should send this parcel to Moscow for me, to my sister Agaf’ja Ivanovna. It’s not urgent but… you really must be the one doing it, Mitja, because no-one in the house should know.
Dmitrij: Would it be a secret, then?
Katja: There are three thousand rubles inside, my sister needs them, or her husband does, I didn’t understand very well. In any case, I’m sending them personally; there (she hands him the parcel) I told you you can do it at your leisure, then you’ll give me the receipt, but… it has to remain between us, understood?
Dmitrij: I’ll do it right now, I’ll bring you the receipt immediately – (he makes for a side door) can I leave from here? I’d rather not pass through the ballroom.
Katja: But why, Mitja, what are they going to say about this sudden escape?
Dmitrij: They’ll say… they’ll say you asked me to tend to an urgent and delicate matter. Isn’t it the truth, Katja? And then, you won’t be alone: someone from the family will keep you in good company – actually, I’m wondering, why didn’t you ask Ivan for this favour? He would’ve been happy to make himself useful.
Katja: What you’re saying isn’t worthy of you, Mitja. Maybe you don’t even really think it, but… you want to hurt me, I feel it.Dmitrij: Is there anything I’m not worthy of? What is it that’s not worthy of me? Come on, Katja, you know very well how low I can go. I’ll do what you asked me to, and without anyone knowing. (he leaves)

As I'm currently at the cinema waiting for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny to start, I wanted to share an anecdote I found recently as I gave a quick read at Phoebe's blog, where I really didn't expect to find a correlation between Freddie and my beloved Indy!
ASK BLOG 45, 29 Sep 2013
Neda wanted to know about Freddie going to the cinema.
In my 12 years with Freddie I can only recall going to the cinema 3 times with him. The first was when we were in New York and Freddie and a group of friends went to see the first Indiana Jones film (1981). Freddie burst out laughing when someone in the audience commented on the fact that one of the actors in a scene in the desert accidentally eats a fly.
The second was the premiere in Tokyo of Flash Gordon and the third was in Munich at a screening of The Never-Ending Story. It was dubbed in German and Freddie couldn’t understand and was frustrated. His friends laughed at something in the film, but Freddie was convinced that they were laughing at him so we got up and left. He really wasn’t do interested in modern films and only went to please his friends.
Belloq eating the fly in such a serious moment during Raiders of the Lost Ark always cracks me up, but knowing Freddie bursted out laughing at it made it even more epic! 🤣

Why does your tattoo say Nada?
It means voice in Farsi, but I got it in memory of a young woman named Neda who was killed by a pro government militiaman during the Iranian 2008 green movement <3
If you want to learn more about her story, here is a song about Neda.

Commentary
This is the first tablet in a series of o-ka tablets, all of which are interlinked.
o-u-ru-to - ho wruntoi - "how [the watchers] are guarding. o- is the introductory particle ὡς - "thus, how." wruntoi is transcribed as u-ru-to and is a 3rd person plural middle verb in -ntoi. IN Classical Greek, this ending is -νται due to analogy with the singular middle endings -μαι, σαι, etc. This is linked to the Homeric verb ῥῦσθαι, meaning "watch" or "guard" (alongside several other meanings).
o-pi-a2-ra - opi-hala - "coast." A direct precedent of Classical ἔφαλος, meaning "coast", or "on the shore." o-pi is an Ablaut variant of /epi/.
e-pi-ko-wo - epi-kowoi - "the watchers." Nominative plural noun, composed of e-pi ("over," etc.) and -kowoi, which is related to the Classical suffix -κόος, meaning "watcher." Cf. Delphi πυρκόοι - "watchers of the sacred fire."
ma-re-wo - Maleus. A man's name in the genitive singular. He is the supervisor, or "commander" of the o-ka.
o-ka. What is an o-ka? It is often speculated to be a military unit of coastguards (e-pi-ko-wo), but not sure. It could be etymologically related to ἄρχω - Homeric Greek shows an o- at the beginning - ὄρχαμος. o-ka could therefore be "people under the command." It could also be related to PIE root *sekh- > hokh- and meaning "something held." Nonetheless, o-ka are certainly the sub-groups into which the "coastguards" are divided.
o-wi-to-no - Owitnos. A place where the "garrison" was stationed. o-wi-ti-ni-jo in .4 is the ethnic adjective derived from this place and describes the 50 o-ka-ra3.
This is then followed by a list of men's names: a-pe-ri-ta-wo - Ampelitawon ("Mr Vine"), o-re-ta - Orestas - "Orestes," e-te-wa - Etewas, ko-ki-jo - Kokkion ("Mr Berry.") It is unclear where this list of names ends. su-we-ro-wi-jo could be another man's name, a place name, or an ethnic adjective describing what comes next.
o-ka-ra3 - nominative plural denoting a man within the o-ka. Recurs as o-ka-ra without the optional -ra3 sign later in the tablet.
ne-da-wa-ta-o - Nedwatao - Nedwatas. Genitive singular of a personal name. He is the commander of this o-ka. The name may relate to the river Neda in the Peloponnese.
A list of men's names then follows: e-ke-me-de - (H)Ekhemedes, a-pi-je-ta - Amphiyetas, ma-ra-te-u - Maratheus, and ta-ni-ko.
a2-ru-wo-te - Halwontei - locative singular of Halwon. This could be related to Ἁλοῦς in Arcadia, but this seems unlikely. Rujigh posits that it is a non-Indo-European formation.
ke-ki-de - kerkides. Unclear meaning - -ides ending suggests that it would be a type of troop. kerki- could be related to κερκίς meaning "weaving-shuttle," but the consequences of this for our translation is unclear.
ku-pa-ri-si-jo - Kuparissioi. Kyparissia continues to be a place on the coast of Messenia. The ke-ki-de here is comprised of Kuparissians.
a3-ta-re-u-si - Aithaleusi. Dative-locative of a place name.
me-ta-qe - meta-kwe - "and with." Equivalent to Greek μετά τε.
pe-i - sphehi - "them."
e-qe-ta - hekwetas - "Follower". An office of Mycenaean society that was seemingly associated with the military. Originally derived from PIE root *sekw-, meaning "follow."
ke-ki-jo a-e-ri-qo-ta - a double barrelled name + title. ke-ki-jo is almost certainly a patronymic, indicating that this was a high status individual. a-e-ri-qo-ta likely meants "he who goes about early in the morning."
e-ra-po ri-me-ne - Elaphon Limenei - "Bay of Deer." A double-barred place name. Classical Greek ἔλαφος - "deer" and λίμην "bay, harbour."
a-pu2-ka-ne - an ethnic adjective describing the kerkides.
a3-ko-ta - Aigotas - "Mr Goaty."

Koofteh Tabrizi
Because some people asked: my Koofteh Tabrizi (کوفته تبریزی, "meatballs from Tabriz") recipe. It doesn't have tomatoes unlike all the ones I found online, but the woman who wrote my cookbook, Neda Afrashi, is from Iran and says this is how her mom made them. Her book, "Die persische Küche: Der ganze Zauber des Orients", is GREAT, but I think it's only available in German. I have 3 Persian cookbooks but I use this one 99% of the time because it's The Best.
This takes a while to make and then it has to simmer for 80 minutes, so set aside enough time.
Ingredients:
80g yellow lentils (lapeh) Half a cup boiled rice (the recipe says one cup, I consider this madness! Also basmati is best.) 300g spring onions 2 Tablespoons barberries (zereshk) 5 Tablespoons fresh / 2 Ts dried tarragon 500g ground beef 1/2 teaspoon saffron, powdered (I use less, shit's expensive) 1 teaspoon dry mint (optional - I use the content of a teabag) 1-2 eggs 10 prunes (alu) 6 walnuts (it says 3 tablespoons in my cookbook) 2 onions 3 teaspoons turmeric Sumac (sumakh, optional) Salt, Pepper
I've added the Persian word for four ingredients in case you have to ask for them in an Iranian store where the seller only knows the Persian word. Has happened to me :) The barberries are hardest to get, Arabic and Turkish cuisine doesn't seem to appreciate them? If you don't have any Iranian style stores nearby, I guess you could replace the barberries with other sour berries like currant or unsweetened cranberries.
---
Also: Get/make whichever things you like of the following: Naan bread, grapes, pickles, radishes, yogurt, raw onions. Those are eaten with the meatballs. Get some of these! Otherwise it's like eating a burger with no lettuce, onions or tomatoes.
---
DO THIS TWO HOURS OR SO BEFORE YOU WANT TO COOK: Soak the lentils and rice for at least an hour (the recipe says handle them separately but I always put them together and I mean nothing bad has happened yet), wash them until the water is clear, boil them until they're al dente. Let them cool, then continue.
---
Crack the walnuts and break the edible stuff into (4-8 per nut) pieces. Put the walnuts, the prunes and the barberries (there might be little stones among them, so pick them out, also wash the berries) on a plate. If you're doing this for the first time, it's probably a good idea to cut the prunes in half, it makes them less unwieldy and your risk of the meatballs falling apart is somewhat smaller.
Cut the spring onions (only the white parts) into thin rings. Mix lentils, rice, ground meat, tarragon, saffron, spring onions, eggs, salt, pepper, mix them until you have a firm but not dry dough. Maybe only add one egg first, then the second if necessary. The dough should be firm, not too soft or sticky.
Cut the onions into little pieces, fry them in olive oil. Put mint on them, wait (a few seconds) until you smell it, stir, add turmeric, stir again, add a liter of water and bring it to a simmer.
Now to form the meatballs. This is the tricky part! Make half a meatball from a part of the meat dough, put a prune (or two pieces of prune if you cut them in half earlier), some of the barberries and walnuts in, and close it with more meat dough. My recipe says you should have a little bowl of water to keep your hands wet, that makes it easier. Personally, I never do this. It really depends on how sticky your dough is. What IS important is to fuss around with the ball after you closed it and make sure it stays closed. Kinda massage it into shape and press the meat edges together. It took me a lot of attempts until the balls would reliably NOT fall apart while I cooked them, so don't be discouraged if not all of them survive the cooking process.
Also, how big should the meatball be? They're a LOT bigger than the ones you usually see. Mine are actually smaller than the ones they make in Iran, according to the pictures I've seen online. But it's hard to give an ideal size. Big enough that the filling doesn't fall out, small enough that you get to the filling relatively quickly while eating. "A bit smaller than a tennis ball", Miss Afrashi tells us. I usually get 9 balls out of 500g (about a pound) of meat.
Here are the 6 that survived my cookie monster style eating frenzy yesterday evening. They're in my big soup pot!
Gently put the meatballs into the simmering water and let them simmer for about 80 minutes. That's EIGHTY MINUTES, so yeah start early. Persian cuisine loves to let stuff simmer for a long time, 80 minutes is actually relatively average, three hours isn't rare either. There should only be like half a liter of water in the pot at the end, you want sauce, not soup. So if there's too much water after an hour, take off the lid for the rest of the cooking time.
Once the meatballs are done, put them on a plate and put some sumac on them. This is optional but I recommend it. Sumac is sour and salty at the same time and it's really nice. Put the sauce in bowls or something, and serve with all the stuff I listed above. I have some of those "menu plates", it makes it easier to eat meals like this:
That's a different dish in the picture, but you get the idea. (Everything whose name starts with khorak (خوراک) you can eat like this.) Sorry the stove is oily, I took this picture to make my sister envious, not to post it on the internet lol.
So this is the epic recipe. This dish is quite something! It's a lot of work, but it's worth it.
