Maybe act 2 Natsuri, but other then that it really ain't toxic. They fight a lot but I'm sure if they work it out they could get pass that, just look at the side story.

Oh boy, this is gonna be a long answer. I hope that’s alright

Sayosuki is by far my favorite DDLC ship (surprise!), one of my favorite ships ever and if I ever had a “comfort ship” it would be the one. I’ve had Sayosuki brainrot since I was obsessed with the game in 2018. Of course on the surface level there’s the “cute pink girls are cute together” angle and that they’re my favorite characters and those are certainly components but why  I love it so much runs deeper than that. To me, I think Sayori and Natsuki suffer the most over the course of the game. Not to say the other characters have presidential pardons from the pain train, but the story of the game highlights the innate tragedy present in both of these characters. Sayori believes herself to be undeserving of happiness or care from others while paradoxically craving those things and puts up a carefree mask to distract others from it. Natsuki goes through it during essentially the entirety of Act 2, as she gets neglected by her father, Monika, Yuri, the player character and from a meta perspective: the game at large. (Natsuki in Act 2 in general is so interesting and I may or may not have an Act 2 Sayosuki fic in the works). Ironically while these characters are at their lowest, it’s also when their most admirable traits are presented. Sayori’s self-hatred is contrasted with her genuine care and love for her friends. When Natsuki drops her abrasive mask, she’s actually a very kind and empathetic person (showcased in her cupcake date at the end of Act 1 and in her note about Yuri’s behavior in Act 2). I think these traits compliment each other well and I think they would bring out the best in each other.

I like to imagine a post-game scenario where these two broken girls who acknowledge and love these parts of each other and could support each other and help each other heal after all the shit they’ve gone through. Natsuki would admire the way Sayori makes everyone happy and I think she would try her best to make her happy as well. Sayori would provide a space for Natsuki where she would be accepted for her interests and would love to hear her talk about them. And maybe they could share some cookies along the way.

Not to mention how hyped I was for their sidestory when DDLC Plus was announced and how I was smiling and kicking my feet the whole time when I played it. I loved enthusiastic Sayori was to get closer to Natsuki (and she says she loves her ahhhhhh) and how they communicated at the end was so sweet.

I feel like there’s a lot more reasons why I love it so much but this response is already long enough as it is, I hope that satiated your curiosity anon :)

TOP 5 CHARACTERS (AT THE MOMENT, IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER)

Elizabeth

My pookie! She got done so dirty by Nakaba, I could write a dissertation about how she deserves a better character arc than she was given and exactly how to do it. My version of her is so OOC that when I watch the series, it feels weird for her to be so different from how I think of her.

Nezuko

Okay, maybe I'm a sucker for poorly written female characters that deserve a better story. I wrote a fic where she learns sign and actually has complicated feelings about her brother, the Hashira and Urokodaki, which I wish the series would have explored more outside of 'oh it's fine/I forgot'.

Sukuna

I AM NOT HORNY ABOUT HIM. I AM A BIG FAT DYKE. I do think he's a well written villain in the sense that he's likeable enough not to be annoying, but not so likeable that he stops being an antagonist. It's hard to put your main villain and hero in the same body, but I think Gege does it wonderfully.

Meliodas

This list would be incomplete without him. Like Elizabeth, I have such a different conception of him in my brain than exists in canon, when I watch the series it feels like a different character completely. His concept is so good and juicy, he just happened to be written by a man.

Cast of Neon Genesis Evangelion

They gave us so much. My first mecha anime and my first psychological/existential/philosophical anime all in one! I can't think of a badly written character in this entire show, but it definitely exists on a different scope to me. It's just so far beyond what a lot of other shows want to say/have the writing to say. That said I do think Cyberpunk Edgerunner was a great show to follow it with, matched the futuristic vibes, complex characters and philosophical message well.

TOP 5 OCs (IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER)

Hikari (NNT)

I think she is my oldest OC out of this entire list at 5 years old this spring. I've seriously put her through so much for the plot, and at this point I think she and her entire universe have safely exited hyperfixation and entered special interest territory. Her ass is going nowhere soon, and even if I spend time with other OCs, it always comes back to her. I have her entire life developed from birth to at least ~50, and trust me, it's not all pretty. Some of it is! But not all of it.

Tristan (NNT)

He's only younger than Hikari by about two weeks, so almost 5 years for him. Not the same as 4KOTA Tristan, I heard that the canon melizabeth kid was named Tristan and went 'oh, sounds good I'll take it' before 4KOTA even came out. The two could not be more different. I almost put him and Hikari in the same entry, they come as a unit like that, but he deserves his own paragraph. He has also gone through more than any normal person would have put him through, but I am no normal bitch. I need a shirt that says 'I put blond men in situations'.

Natsuri Fujikawa (Demon Slayer)

She's much younger than the twins at about 1.5, but I'm still loving her storyline and plot development. She's in the Demon Slayer universe, and is only 10 when she goes through the Horrors, which might be a mary-sue type deal but I really don't care. It brings me joy. Does it say something about me that forced cannibalism, kidnapping and psychological torture sparks joy? Maybe. I haven't written any of her stuff down yet, I should probably do that.

Misoka (HXH)

Older than Natsuri but younger than the twins, let's call it about two years. Her story is a little looser, but goes through more ups and downs than straight misery punctuated by moments of brightness. She's fun for when I need a little more variety in the delusions, but is still versatile enough for me to put her in Situations and have it feel normal. I probably owe her an apology for making her try to kill her adoptive family.

Claudia and One (OG)

The original strangers -> friends -> lovers. I wrote a hundred pages of angst and whump about you before it was flagged by my middle school and I got called into the counselor's office because of it. Shoutout to the social worker who told me it was good writing and that I should keep working on it, I just had to move it off of my school account. You were a real one.

Chapter 2 - "House."

Warning for: parental abuse, transphobia

Natsuki entered the house and was greeted by dirty dishes and flies buzzing, it was a disgusting sight but it wasn't her problem unless she wanted to bake and tonight, she had plans. She snuffed the dirt and grime that littered the house and made her way up the stairs, closing her door and locking it behind her.

The pink curtains and overwhelmingly pastel colouring all around had been there since she was young, though she was pressured to grow up and move on, she never once caved to those demands. She knew who she was and she'd be damned if she ever listened to anyone's bullcrap.

Moving on, she began changing into causal clothing, a nice pink tank top and white shorts which she grabbed from her closet were folded in her hands when her eyes suddenly landed on the mirror and her body was filled with several bruises and cuts from the abuse she'd suffered since age 10. Angered at her own weakness, she put the clothes on and fell back on her bed.

She suddenly sprung up and dashed for her bag, grabbing the book Yuri had given her for the night. On one hand, she didn't want Yuri to gain any upper hand upon seeing Natsuki take interest in her stupid, convoluted, over complicated, pompous literature but on the other hand....Natsuki was really enjoying the book. Shocked and disgusted by her own excitement to read something she deemed so dumb, she swallowed her pride and began to read.

And read she did, for hours and hours on end; with every little word she was immersed deeper and she found herself thinking of Yuri in a more positive light. She giggled at the different sticky notes with jokes about each character, notes about the lore and notes describing everything behind the scenes all written by Sayori. She planned on making it through the entire book in one night she was so immersed.

"Finally outgrew your manga?" Natsuki snapped her attention to her father in the door but she'd locked her door, hadn't she? "No," she began to defend herself, "This was given to me from a friend." She sat up, closing the book up and holding it to her chest. Her father looked her up and down, "You know, you don't have to do that fake high pitch voice." Natsuki looked away, anger on her face. "Could you get out now?" She asked through gritted teeth.

"I can't tell my co-workers about you if you keep dressing and acting like this."

"You wouldn't tell them about me anyway."

"I would if you stopped pretend to be a girl."

"You don't like anything about me, don't use that against me!"

Natsuki stands and points to him angrily as they yell, "Against you?! I'm the one supporting you! I'm the one letting you do this to yourself!" Natsuki's eyebrows immediately furrow at that statement. "Support?!" Natsuki scoffs, "You sit there on your ass all day, you don't talk to me unless you're yelling, you haven't hugged me in years! The most you do is hit me!" Her father grabs her arm and yanks her.

"Talk to me like that again, I fucking dare you." She pulls away her arm and he smacks her across the face. She backed into the corner, "You never could fight me like a man anyway, maybe it's better you keep pretending." Natsuki feels at her swelling cheek to suppress the aching and her anger only grows as he walks away.

After a few moments, Natsuki stands and wanders to her mirror, she stares at herself; she knew who she was, she couldn't change that. This was her, the real her and that bastard could never change that. Brows furrowed, she punches the mirror and her knuckles start to bleed.

"Shit," Natsuki mumbles, wrapping her knuckles in bandages and then returning to her room and grabbing the book Yuri lent her. "At least he didn't rip this one up like my manga." Natsuki sighs and goes back to her door and closes it, seeing that the lock was picked before closing it.

Natsuki opens the book and finds her page again, sighing contently as she began to read once more...

Like I said, this one is heavy.

This fic is unique in the sense that it's actually from Yuri's point of view, which is pretty rare! However, because of that, there's a lot of careful attention paid to Yuri's self-harm habits, general anxiety, and intrusive thoughts, so consider this a trigger warning before you go in: it'll be quite prevalent.

Against this backdrop of Yuri's own personal issues she is working through, we get a really cute and really well-written take on the Natsuki/Yuri pairing! We get to watch them evolve from acquaintances, to friends, to crush, to "complicated", all while watching some Sayonika develop in the background!

There's a lot of cute circumstances and details here that make the characters feel very real, and by extension their interactions make you feel for them. I'm already autistic over these characters, and fics as amazingly written as this one do not help, ahaha!

Like I mentioned, we get a front row seat to Yuri's issues as she struggles with them over the story, from her anxiety, to her self-harm, and towards the end her intrusive thoughts she can't seem to ignore. I won't lie, I had to take it slow to make sure I was processing everything as I went and didn't let it get to me, so if you're maybe susceptible to those sorts of things, I'd advise maybe skipping through certain portions or not reading at all. But, if you're okay to read on, you'll find a really great representation of anxiety and how to deal with it! We see Sayori struggle with her depression with Monika's support, and eventually how they all relate to Yuri with their struggles with anxiety and negative thoughts.

But maybe my favorite part? Yuri's dad.

It's always so interesting to see how author's portray the doki's parents, and this fic shows us Yuri's dad, some of his past, how he interacts with his daughter, and most importantly, how he supports her. It was so refreshing to see a healthy parent/daughter dynamic in a DDLC fic, I think we need more of that! While he doesn't know all the details, he does offer his support on a number of subjects, and it's really great to watch Yuri and her dad interact :3

I really love this fic, but sadly it only has 16/17 chapters! It was last updated 2018-10-30 with no sign of finishing... but the first 16 chapters are golden, and if you stop reading where it ends, it can still be taken as an abrupt and open-ended way to finish things off! I hope against all odds that the author returns to finish it one day (and maybe write a follow-up!), but for now we are left with the makings of a masterpiece that I highly recommend!

Ranking Duo ships from my least favorite to my favorite!

#10 MCxYuri: I think that MC and Yuri have the worst chemistry in the whole game and it kinda feels as if they don’t completely fill each other’s needs as partners. I like them more when the rest of the club are involved bcs they aren’t an exclusive thing and they still fill some of each other’s needs, but the rest are filled by the other dokis.

#9 MCxMonika: MC ships are really hit or miss for me (as you’ll later see), but like in most scenarios I don’t really like this ship. Mid-game Aware Monika x unaware MC kinda just feels forced, same if MC is aware as well or is the only one aware. The only reason that I could think that type of situation would work is if Monika is just coping and going for the next best thing apart from the player, but even then I think another ship does it better. Meanwhile unaware MC x unaware Monika would just be plane old boring. BUT there is one situation where I think Monika x MC works for me, post-game and they’re both aware, mostly thanks because of the “The things she does for love” fic.

#8 Monsuki: Now we’re getting to some ships I actually like, revealing that the main reason I wanted to do this ranking is to yap about how much I love these ships. I’d say that Monsuki is my least favorite of the ships I actually really love because I think it would kinda lack a lot of the angst/drama/comfort the other ships can offer. Anyways I do think that they’d make the silliest couple out of any of these, mostly because of Monika’s Faux confidence and flirty nature would bring out the most tsundere out of Natsuki, both the Tsun and the Dere.

#7 Natsuri: I’m not the biggest Natsuri fan (or maybe it’s just me being a contrarian lol), but I can very well see how they just work as a ship, mostly because they’re extremely similar yet complete opposites and seeing them discover just how similar they are to each other is just so awesome? I don’t know any other word to describe it. Also short feisty lesbian x tall calm and anxious lesbian is a tale as old as time.

#6 Sayuri: Sayori and Yuri would just make a great couple, Sayori being silly and flirty and Yuri just constantly being flustered. Meanwhile they both comprehend really well they’re feelings of self-doubt and self-hatred and would comfort each other really well when push comes to shove. IT’S JUST SO CUUUTEEEE!!!

#5 Yurika: Toxic or evil duo Yurika can be really fun, but like I think they’re both just a really underrated ship cuz like they’re both pretty mature for their age or at least act more mature than the rest, so I dunno there’s something in that which calls to me. Plus Confident power sub Monika works really with Yuri being shy but intense in a way I cannot describe.

#4 Sayosuki: Sayori and Natsuki have my favorite dynamic from the base game (I haven’t played nor seen the side stories lol), they’re just silly, and I think that them being silly and cute together really just makes me happy. + imagine all of the hurt/confort (my favorite tag).

#3 MCxNatsuki: As I said, I love Hurt/Comfort and I think that MC x Natsuki really shines in that department. It’s possibly because in all the ddlc mods I’ve seen, when Natsuki x MC is the main couple, it really makes Natsuki shine a lot, for a bunch of reasons (Natsuki being a interesting yet easy to dissect character, the whole softening up that Tsundere lovers absolutely eat up, the angst and then the comfort that comes with it, the fact that MC doesn’t really face much personal problems , so Natsuki’s problems are in the limelight, etc.). But also because they’re probably one of the most probable couples, cuz they’re both weebs, MC is very understanding, non-judgmental and patient with Natsuki, which is something that she needs and they just have good chemistry.

#2 Sayonika: I 👏 Like 👏 Cute 👏 and 👏Fluffy 👏 Sayonika. Yes please, gimme me more of it, but I absolutely love toxic Sayonika for some reason. And like this isn’t probably too much of a hot take in the toxic yuri website, but there’s something just so intriguing about a Monika treating Sayori like a tool for stress relief or a means to an end thinking she’s not a real person and Sayori just kinda ok with it because it’s the only way she can feel loved.

#1 MCSayo: I have a thing for childhood friends to lovers, OK!? But also they just make a very silly and very cute couple, and like, THEY’RE JUST SO CUTE TOGETHER!

Overall of I had to like rank these on a tier list (cuz why not?), I’d say that MCxYuri are a D tier, MCxMonika are a C tier, Monsuki, Natsuri, Sayuri and Yurika are all A tier and the top 4 are all S tier.

There’s nothing wrong with them, in fact i like them a lot! it just feels like they became the game’s immediate OTPs because “natsuri is enemies to lovers and monika and satori are the ones left over”. yes i know that’s not why people ship them mostly but i can’t help but feel that

these. are single-handedly. my favs. and it baffles me so much that they’re not fan-favorites, not because i think everyone should follow my opinions, but genuinely because of dynamic

it’s very explicit that there’s the tiniest bit of segregation between natsuki with sayori and monika with yuri, with one pair being more “childish” while the other is more “mature”

and maybe that in itself is the reason why sayonika and natsuri are so popular, because it mixes it up! and i do love them for that! it makes for a great dynamic! but it feels so much more wholesome when the people match each other’s energies, which seems to be the case in yurika and sayuki!
