tadc theory #4

so this one isn’t exactly a theory, but could be piecing things together about the main cast

So it looks like the whole cast is based off of some kind of toy: the most obvious being Ragatha based off a raggedy Ann doll and Kinged being a chess piece.

I feel like what toy the characters are designed after may show what time period they’re all from, and maybe parts of their personality

For Jax the closest toy I could find resembling him was a bendable rubber rabbit toy from around the 1980’s as far as I could find, similar to this:

For Zooble, my first guess was some kind of clay toy like playdough, or some kind of wooden block toy, which was all I could find for toys which have detachable and reattachable parts. Brightly painted wooden block toys were very popular since they were invented, but the national hall of toy fame did put ABC blocks in their collection and gave it the title of one of Americas toys of national significance in 2003, so they may be from around that time as their personality is similar-ish. No idea for them, though.

Gangle is meant to be based off the comedy and tragedy masks, and it may be some kind of mask toy, but I genuinely could not find any from a specific time period, so my guess is it may have been some mask the original human played with as a child and their time period is left undetermined.

Ragatha is very clearly a raggedy Ann doll, which were popular around 1918 when the first doll came out, which leads me to believe it may have been a very old doll passed through for generations until reaching the original human Ragatha was.

Pomni may have been based on a classic Jack-in-the-box, with more metaphorical meaning. The colors are similar to some slightly more modern day ones (still old). I couldn’t find a similar one from a specific time period, but I was able to find the meaning for a jack-in-the-box, which is “surprises, happiness, and as a symbol of childhood”

Kinger is, well, a king chess piece, which is possibly just used to show his age compared to the others/what period he came to the circus, with the golden period for chess being in the 1940’s (goddamn this dude is old)

Now onto the symbolic meanings for what all these could mean.

For Jax, I feel like most of his “cartoon logic” could be explained through this toy, such as the way his limbs bend and stretch, with many also being based on bugs bunny cartoons. (I even found one with overalls similar to his!). Most of these were shown to have white paint on the teeth, eyes, and gloves, which are all shown on Jax to be yellow. White paint yellows with age, so it could show the wearing down of Jax through his time in the circus or his mental state when entering, feeling “worn down” by outside life.

Zooble is shown to be very avoidant, and acts almost like a teenager (speaking from experience as one currently). I have two theories: they had dysmorphia before entering the circus, which caused them to gain the ability to change almost any part of their body after entering, or their body develops throughout the show to be increasingly weird.

I’m not fully sure with Gangle, but their design could have been based off perhaps their original human having some kind of disorder causing mood swings, emotional masking, or simply a permanent “low” feeling. (I myself have had experiences with all of these things, it is NOT fun) I believe the masks may have been some kind of coping mechanism as a child playing with them which led to emotional masking and thus the comedy and tragedy masks in the circus.

Ragatha’s design is similar to a very, very beat up doll, with many patches and the button eye. I believe this could show past abuse as a human, which may also connect to the use of knives with her character (as shown in the character introductions and episode two). I believe that as a human Ragatha was a child of abuse with some kind of relation to knives, and was given a very old raggedy Ann doll as a child. These dolls were originally marketed towards kid to be beat up, being encouraged to “beat, throw, soil, and hang them” due to their soft bodies. This could have been what was done to the original doll, before it was given to Ragatha. She may have felt some kind of relation to the doll, being the first to take care of it after years of abuse, projecting herself onto it and taking care of it by patching it up and keeping it safe. Pomni is similar to a jack-in-the-box much more than design-wise, with the way she “pops up” out of nowhere in the pilot. They also have to get wound until springing, which could be similar in the pilot to how she continues to be wound up through the episode until losing it in the finale. This could also be a repeat in later episodes, as the same thing happens in the second episode with her being lifted in spirits until everything “pops out of the box”. Jesters are also seen as “lower” in a lot of media, doing silly or “embarrassing” tricks for the entertainment of others who are above them.

Kinger’s design is probably much more focused on metaphors than connection to the past life. In chess, kings are the weakest piece, only being able to move one square, as opposed to pieces like the queen (queenie topped confirmed). However, the game depends upon the king piece, as it ends once one is captured. This may relate to Kingers relationship to the rest of the cast: he’s not mentally “strong” and very jumpy from sound which could be a sense of danger, but so far he’s seen to have a kind of “fatherly role” towards the cast.

Cartoon Network Friday Spotlight: “Bugs Bunny Rides Again”

Most Looney Tunes fans are probably aware that Yosemite Sam was created by Friz Freleng as an antagonist for Bugs Bunny who offered more of a challenge than the dimwitted Elmer Fudd, but let me share a more personal fun fact about the character- he and Foghorn Leghorn were my grandfather’s favorite Looney Tunes characters. He enjoyed a good Bugs or Daffy cartoon without him as much as anyone (as well as the Road Runner and Coyote, but those were my grandmother’s favorites), but those two characters were always the ones he looked out for. I remember watching a Super Chunk that was 3 hours of Foghorn Leghorns that he was ecstatic for, and in his later years, he’d leave the channel on when Looney Tunes returned to air at noon on CN in between National Geographic and the Discovery Channel.

So yeah, Sam’s kind of special to me (and yes, I’m from the south- if you consider Central Florida the south, anyway), although I do also like Freleng’s reasoning for the character’s existence. At some point Bugs’ retaliation on Elmer can border on bullying, but Yosemite Sam is always able to justify his actions.

This isn’t Sam’s first rodeo, but by this short, the character was already well-defined. He’s loud mouthed, abrasive, and doesn’t quit until he gets what he wants- no mamby pamby, indeed. When Bugs refuses to exit a saloon on his behalf, the two challenge each other around town until Sam gets his way. Or so he thinks.

Some of the character’s most recognizable iconography is introduced here, like Sam’s slow walk, his battle of escalation with Bugs, and their unforgettable dance off, which was immortalized during the Powerhouse era. I can see Bugs’ inability to lose the majority of the time be tiresome to some viewers, but nah, I can watch his cartoons all day. As long as you throw at least one of his tangos with Sam in for good measure.

Arabella came from the girls grandmother, having always loved the name belles mother had chose it also because a week before the girl was born her grandmother had passed, this was as in a way of her giving her life to Arabella.

Arabella had grown up in a loving household but faced many traumatic events that shaped her into whom she is now. Warwickshire was the town where miners had been working for centuries, and the Browns were no less, working since the American revolution. She had a difficult childhood, and had to start working at six years old to maintain the family, as well as many mouths to feed came into the family. 

The moment she got her Hogwarts letter, her life changed for the better.

The granddaughter of a Baron, her mother was the bastard daughter of the baron, who shunned them because her mother was Spanish and supporter of the First Spanish Republic. They grew up in a small cottage in Devonshire and trained her to marry someone who’d make her work lighter and better.When she turned 19 she met Bartholomew Brown while taking a stroll with her best friend when she noticed a handsome, shirtless young man covered in black– when she took a closer look, he was being beaten. Orla and Beatrice met during the meals in the Great Hall. One Slytherin was laughing at her for being a "mudblood" when Beatrice silenced him with a slap and delivered a speech of how she was much more than her status and that while she'd mature and learn, he'd always be an obtuse, narrow-minded and ignorant pureblood. She was intrigued then by this girl who stood up to her bully. Later, she'd realise she was in most of her classes, and how strong-willed, independent, kind and resilient she was. Her fondness grew to love and soon revealed her feelings to her in the Astronomy Tower when everybody else was sleeping. Beatrice returned her feelings and both of them would act as best friends, but at night they'd organise rendezvous and steal kisses and words of affection. When her father found out, he was scared of her, but supported her nevertheless. Orla soon became one more of the Browns.

Soon, after graduating, when the Harpies accepted and both had to shape themselves, she vowed to love nobody and find her way to her again. They wrote to one another and kept her vow until they found each other and wed on Lady Gray's chapel, vowing to never part from the other and always be their #1 priority.

They couldn't have children, but they adopted the children of the fallen coal miners and stray kids and gave them a better life.

Both women hit it off right away, both having similar backgrounds and bonded over many things and soon showed an eager Ethel the ropes of the coal miners’ suffering and both supported one another, accompanying them to their respective activisms 

Abigail Jane Bennett ( @mjs-oc-corner​ ) 

Both had similar backgrounds and were dormmates, and soon bonded over many things, and she helped her be more secure about herself and better a bit more her image, and became good friends and almost sisters to one another.

Trivia

Due to the homophobia of the era, she and Orla couldn't marry, but had a small ceremony where her father and someone of Orla's trust witnessed and was officiated by Lady Gray in her family chapel as Viscountess.

They had to move from place to place because of her work.

She never had children of her own but adopted several children who had become orphans because of the bad life quality life of the coal miners.

She became later in life a great advocate of the coal miners, taking her father's work

She can run really fast and her father taught her street fighting, so she can throw a punch

She spent most of her life honing her duelling skills.

Her dormmates were the only ones who knew about she and Orla.

She used to be bullied by Slytherins because of her blood condition.

Her father died a year after her clandestine wedding to Orla due to his poor health.
