Criminal Vignettes of Morrowind, Part II: Narsis District
In the sequestered confines of an empty warehouse in Narsis, three members of the Camonna Tong had gathered for a special meeting. As two of them sat and observed, the third produced a pouch from within his jacket and set it on the table, tugging away the drawstring to reveal the clumpy grey substance contained within.
The three of them had a problem.
“Greydust.” Said Sathyl, the wiry Tong-Hammer wrinkling his nose. Dals and Llovor followed suit as the stench of the stuff reached them, earthy and foul.
“The hell is this?” Said Llovor, as he clamped a pair of fingers over his nostrils. “People are actually eating this shit?”
“Not eating it, you s’wit.” Sathyl growled. “Smoking it. And in case you haven’t noticed, they’ve been doing it on our turf.”
“That can’t be right, boss.” Dals shot back, a tad defensively. Among the three of them, it was him who was responsible for distribution. “I don’t know what that stuff is, but its not ours. Who in Oblivion would produce something that looks and smells like that?”
“And who in Oblivion would pay for it?” Llovor added, raising his cup in the air obligingly. “Put that stuff away, would you boss? Its putting me off my Flin.”
While the three Tongsmer talked amongst themselves, they were being shadowed by another familiar presence: A dark-furred Suthay-Raht stepped forward with a silver flagon in his hands, pouring Llovor’s cup full again. Meek and bent, he performed the action with the care and precision of one who’d been punished for mistakes many times before. An enchanted iron bracer was clamped around his wrist, though it hung a tad loosely and clanked faintly with each step he took.
“It only smells slightly worse than your slave, Llovor.” Dals joked, “In fact, maybe you should check behind its ears to see if-”
“Shut up.” Sathyl hissed, and they did, Dals averting his eyes in discomfort while Llovor looked on blankly, drink in hand.
“Its not ours,” He continued a tense moment later, “And its not bad product, either. Its potent product, is what it is. Stuff’s been spreading through the tenements like wildfire for weeks, and now its here on our turf, which makes it our problem too. And we’re going to take that problem seriously. Understood?”
The Tong-Hammer’s two underlings nodded slowly.
“Yeah, boss, of course.” Llovor said reticently. “But if its not ours, then whose is it?”
“Some gang from out east, in the Deshaan.” Sathyl replied, “An outlander gang calling themselves the Ja-Natta Syndicate.”
“Ptuh.” Dals spat, making a great show of doing so on the floor of the warehouse. “Filthy N’wah, greedy foreigners trying to steal coin from honest, hard-working dunmer-”
“Save it, Dals.” Sathyl interjected tersely, raising a hand. “I talked with the Boss about it. He says that we should keep our eyes on the streets and watch for more of this ‘Greydust’ stuff, see if we can’t catch out any of these Ja-Natta people’s dealers.”
His subordinates nodded again, and Llovor was about to speak when another voice imposed itself on their meeting.
“Daran’Jo has heard…” Said the Khajiiti slave, speaking softly as the Dunmer craned their head, “That the Ja-Natta Syndicate has talented alchemists working for them, more talented than the refiners of the Camonna Tong.” He took a step forward, and his bracer rattled faintly on his wrist.
“And who told you that, slave?” Dals snarled, unable to hide his offense. “One of your Skooma-Sniffing penmates?”
“Speak when spoken to, Cat.” Llovor said more dismissively, though his vicious gaze promised retribution on the Suthay-Raht. But Sathyl waved his hand, indicating quiet, as he studied the slave with a keen-eyed stare.
“You know about the Ja-Natta Syndicate?” Asked the Tong-Hammer. “How?”
“Daran’Jo has heard of them from his fellow slaves.” Said the stooped servant, meeting the mer’s gaze undaunted. He took another step forward, clank. “This one has heard that they will accept anyone into their ranks, even Argonians and Khajiit.”
“Of course they would,” Dals said. “Outlander filth always clump together like-”
“Shut.” Sathyl raised a finger and shot Dals a warning glance. “Up.” Then he looked back at Daran’Jo.
“What else have they told you? Your ‘fellow slaves.’” He pressed.
“Daran’Jo has heard that they are good with a club, and with their own fists.” The slave replied. “That they wear light armor to maneuver better through the city’s sewers, and know how to pick a lock so they can get into places where they do not belong.”
“Any street thief worth his salt knows how to pick a lock.” Said Llovor, stiffly. “So what?”
“Llovor,” Said Dals, “Why’s your slave’s bracer so loose on its wrist? Did you not have anything tighter?”
But as the question was posed, Sathyl’s gaze shot to the Khajiit’s wrist and saw that, indeed, the bracer was no slave’s bracer at all. The primitive iron was inlaid with uncut gems and - as the slave took another step forward - began to glow with potent sorcery. Sathyl retreated backwards and bumped into the table, wide-eyed, mouth agape.
“The bracer!” He cried out in alarm. “Its been switched! How?"
“The Ja-Natta Syndicate are skilled enchanters,” Daran’Jo said, flashing his teeth in a feline grin as a ball of noxious green mist coalesced in his claws, “And very cunning.”
As he and his associates were drowned in poison, Sathyl had enough time to let out the beginnings of a scream.

Chancellor,
Following up on my last ask, what do you think of Narsis Dren. Like I mentioned, every single one of my associates who has encountered him despises him. And from what I have heard his ego is bigger then Mannimarco's and possibly rivals that of Molag Bal (Also disregard any reports you have been getting of a Khajiit with glowing eyes, the less you ask about that particular matter the better)
I had, in fact, met Narsis Dren.
"I am an explorer of incomparable renown, the greatest delver into the most dangerous ruins of the past that had ever been!" he said.
Which was all nice, but that particular Ayleid ruin was on a private property of the Tharn estate and has for centuries served as our wine cellar with some extra security measures.
We didn't talk much that time, he gave me such a headache that I ventured into the "foreboding den of promising riches" myself, and when I emerged later with some liquid will to bother with nitwits, he was gone.
I ran into him years later in Reaper's March while I was gathering more information about Knhunzar'ri. He insisted that I could be his "assistant" while he searched the archive for... I don't know what exactly, and honestly I didn't care. The last I saw him, he was trying to get the Pendant of Lunar Flight off while he was hovering under the ceiling. I noticed only because he stopped getting under my feet for three minutes.
