↳ ft. theo + janis ! ( @infiinitys ) at black ink revenge tattoo studio
❝ well, christ, ❞ come the first words tumbling out of theo's mouth the moment he pushes open the door to the tattoo parlor to rival his own. the competition. ❝ i wasn't expecting it to be bustling in here, but damn, i expected it to be a little busier than this. ❞ and that's not really fair, is it ? every shop's gonna have downtime and, in fact, it's only because he's got nothing he needs to be doing right now back at no regrets that he's here. dark gaze lands on the only employee within earshot ― a familiar face, one that's fond of antagonizing him at any chance. and theo, of course, returns the favor whenever he can. pushing the door the rest of the way open, theo steps inside and flashes her a devious curious grin. ❝ what, you scare 'em all away, cruz ? ❞

Kids. They still thought they knew something the rest of us didn’t, the way every generation thinks they’re the ones who invented sex, the way every generation thinks they’re the ones who will be remembered. They still had I’m-better-than-this dreams, one-day-we’ll-leave-this-all-behind aspirations. What they didn’t understand is that it doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from. No one ever leaves it all behind. The best you can hope for is to start off in the least horrible place. The rest of us just have to make do.

okay so, I am NOT throwing shade on the OP, I just wanna share what I've learned when I googled this.
The notion that Janis Joplin and Peggy Caserta were dating at the time comes from the autobiography of Peggy which was later revealed to be ghostwritten by a man. It's basically RPF with smut written for drug money, and Caserta regrets ever associating with it. At the time this picture was taken, Peggy Caserta had been dating another woman openly and was, even then, known to be gay by everyone around her. She and Joplin would hang out, make out and do heroine together. Whether or not there was more, whether or not Joplin was queer, the story of them dating in 1969 had been a fabrication. That is, if you believe Peggy more than the ghostwriter she hired when she'd been far from clean (she is now, and has been for quite some time).
Peggy Caserta was later blamed for Janis Joplin's death.

On Wednesday, I reported that a trade magazine that promotes books refused to run an ad for Israel Alone because “customers might complain.”
Matt Baldacci, publisher of Shelf Awareness, said an ad for Bernard-Henri Lévy’s book about Israel post–October 7 could give booksellers “trouble they haven’t asked for and don’t wish to have.” The ad was originally scheduled to run on November 1 in the outlet’s weekly newsletter, which goes out to 645,000 general readers.
Since then, I’ve learned a June 14 newsletter from Shelf Awareness, which went out to more than 37,000 publishing professionals, contained an ad for P Is for Palestine, a children’s book that has stirred controversy for promoting an “antisemitic” ideology. P Is for Palestine was written by Iranian Swedish activist Golbarg Bashi and was first published in November 2017 by PM Press, a self-proclaimed “independent, radical publisher.”
P Is for Palestine runs through the alphabet, presenting colorful illustrations and words that represent each letter. In the book, the letter I stands for intifada, which it defines as “Arabic for rising up for what is right, whether you are a kid or a grownup!”
Intifada, in fact, translates to uprising or shaking off. The word is mainly used to describe two eras of violent Palestinian protest against Israel: The First Intifada, from 1987 to 1990, led to the deaths of dozens of Israelis and more than a thousand Palestinians, and the Second Intifada, from 2000 to 2005, culminated in the deaths of over a thousand Israelis and 4,000 Palestinians.
Jany Finkielsztein, a senior education analyst for the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis, said that “P Is for Palestine serves as a tool of indoctrination rather than simple storytelling. For instance, ‘I is for intifada’ portrays violent uprisings in a favorable manner, conveying a harmful narrative to impressionable young children.
“Books that prioritize indoctrination aren’t literature.”
On Friday, Shelf Awareness released an apology for rejecting the ad for Israel Alone, addressing its statement “to everyone who is angry and disappointed about our recent decision.”
The statement went on to “clarify” that the ad was canceled from its weekly newsletter “that we publish on behalf of more than 250 independent bookstores, reaching 600,000 readers, with the goal of helping booksellers promote reading and sell more books. Our bookstore partners cannot block titles that are advertised. As a result, we are careful to keep in mind that every advertised title we include appears to the bookstores’ customers as something the store itself is endorsing.”

Letter from Captain John Page Regarding the Movement of 530 Creek Indians
Record Group 75: Records of the Bureau of Indian AffairsSeries: Letters ReceivedFile Unit: Narrative of Emigration in 1834 with Statement of Expenditures
Rec'd Jany 23d
Columbus Missippi [sic]
6th January 1835
Sir
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated the 13th of last month. Your letter apprising me of the discontinuing of Col Hill was acknowledged immediately on the receipt of it, but I discovered it must have laid in the Post office two or three days before I got it, notwithstanding a visit to the office every day the Post Master had left his business with a clerk who probably did not know where to look for them I dispatched the communications immediately to Col Hill as directed and on his arrival started the Indians the next day. the cold weather caused many of those who assembled for the purpose of emigrating to leave us and return to their town again, Col Hill put off the time for starting so long, they were getting impatient; and on the receipt of your letter I started fourth with [forthwith]. I have only 530 and a great many of them are in dreadful situation to move in the cold weather. I have found it almost impossible to get along, the roads are almost impassible, we have labored from day light till long after dark to get some days 6 miles, the waters are up and the bridges swept off, and it has rained and hailed almost every day since I left Fort Mitchell, the only thing I have to console me is that we may have some fair weather after a while [complete transcript at link]

janis ian/sarkisian/imi'ike is literally the character ever. shes an angsty traumatized teen. shes a bitchy mean girl. her best friend is a raging homosexual. Shes a raging homosexual. canon is wrong about her. shes a narrative parallel to regina. shes a narrative foil to regina. shes neither of these. shes completely defined by regina. she has three last names. her family and home life is never once mentioned ever. she does art and sews and is quite good at it. she is petty and wants revenge. she is herself and unapologetic. she is caught up in the plastics' games equally as much. she is at fault for her own actions. she is deeply hurt by cadys actions. she has three different hair colors. her love language is physical touch. she works at the mall.

💛💚💖 I'm curious 🤭
Ask game: unpopular opinion edition <3
hii tysm for the ask! another chance to spread my hateful words and thoughts! (also a senpai notice me moment ngl 😳🤭)
💛: What is a popular ship you just can't get behind, and why?
in all honesty, i will back most ships but the one i cannot is drarry. like i get it, theres all this fun evidence but who tf cares. its kind of bland, especially after falling down into the depths tomarrymort and i actually despise 8th year fics which seem to make up a huge portion of it. drarry fans can be very very insufferable (speaking as a former drarry shipper) and i could not stand to be in the same room as more than a few at any one time
also wolfstar. i cant believe i nearly forgot how much i despise it. remus and sirius are not good for each other, and everyone seems so obsessed over it. plus anytime i try to read a marauders fic its just there which puts me off a lot of that part of the fandom in general. i cant stand it even if its a side pairing — the mischaracterisation, the blatant suppression of sirius' personality, changing him into the uwu boy and remus into the badass one (atyd, my op). they definitely were not together before harry's 3rd year and even then i dont think they were actually together. i lowkey hate remus too. hes kind of mid
💚: What does everyone else get wrong about your favorite character?
my fave character is harry and the movies did a world of damage to him. they made him boring and flat and so now everyone thinks hes like that. hes not — hes so clever and hes vicious and hes such a complicated person dealing with so much shit. and often ppl make his abuse worse, but thats not the point. neglect and starvation are also abuse, it doesn't have to be overtly physical. it downplays over forms of abuse (i myself have an emotionally abusive relationship w my mother). i hate when people make harry weak in the face of all this — he is so strong and amazing
💖: What is your biggest unpopular opinion about the series?
that wolfstar didnt love each other lmao. i honestly dont know what counts as an unpopular opinion. mainly, i think at kings cross when harry dies, it should have been lily to greet him — dumbledore is obviously death and he was the wrong choice to represent the narrative closure. or if not lily, at least someone like sirius. also the characterisation of death in fics; death should be a woman! or at least not portrayed as a man all the time. im just obsessed with that idea. you get it in art/writing sometimes (e.g. Death by Janis Rozentāls (1897) / "There is something female about being dead," Joyce Carol Oates) and it makes me feral.
more unpopular opinons: i dont think regulus was a good guy, i think peter deserved better from everyone around him and the fandom, voldemort was never exorcised as a child and hes far more interesting than parts of the fandom think, the marauders were really bad bullies and SA'd snape but theyre also allowed to grow up — the two arent mutually exclusive, none of the characters are particularly good and none of them fully evil either (nuance ffs), remus is a coward and i hate him a lot

people trying to force mean girls into a simple heroes vs villains narrative make me want to vomit and force my sizeable head into a tiny crack until it explodes. actually the point is that they’re all horrible teenagers that either base their self worth on their privilege, making them believe basically every -ism and -obia except feminism, or they’re outcasts that desperately want to feel accepted no matter what, or they’re outcasts that want to feel accepted no matter what and feel vindicated as victims. being a victim sometimes instils this need to get revenge, to break things, at any cost. mean girls essentially asks the question- what if every revenge fantasy of yours came true? and what that actually means. at the end of the day, janis is unbelievably selfish!! and what was crucial to her development as a ‘villain’ was regina isolating her from all her friends and peers!! they’re just as bad as each other!! honestly mean girls somehow manages to hold up well because it dissects teen dynamics with compassion and criticism and humour: the plastics are the girls i hear insulting everyone and their mother in the toilet without consequences. janis and damien are the fellow weird gay friends i had that i sort of sympathise with but ultimately don’t ever want to see again because oh my god get over yourself. the fact people think ‘actually [x] is the villian so we shouldn’t criticise or evaluate [y]’s actions’ takes are interesting is beyond me

I’ve now seen mean girls the movie the musical the movie a second time and it’s still just as good so here’s a full review
The Narrators bit was so much fun, the way they kept looking at the camera, breaking the fourth wall, and that one shot where they’re doing announcements and the name plate just reads “narrators”. The way the movie opens on them recording a video for social media in a garage and it ends in the same place with the garage door closing while they wave under it like the curtain on a broadway stage. Amazing.
The way it switches from fullscreen to widescreen just for songs where Regina controls the narrative like a fucking puppeteer. Like, at first I thought it was every song, but it’s only for Meet the Plastics, Apex Predator, Someone Gets Hurt, and World Burn. It’s SUCH a stylistic choice and I absolutely loved it
THE CONTINUOUS SHOT IN I’D RATHER BE ME!!!! HOLY SHIT!!!!! IT’S SO COOL!!!!! I love me a good continuous shot and would have LOVED to be a fly on the wall on set that day
Also still on I’d rather be me, the way the huge iconic moment of regina getting hit by the bus is completely overshadowed by Janis getting her moment. Loved it.
There were also a lot more smaller continuous shots that were really cool!
The use of social media, especially since social media as we know it today didn’t really exist when the original movie came out. It was a big part of the broadway show and keeping that translated REALLY well to the big screen
I made a separate post about this but the fact that they actually made Janis canonically gay instead of it just being subtext or if you squint. It makes Janis a much more sympathetic character and makes her vendetta against Regina feel even more real.
Making Cady’s mom a single mom was a surprisingly nice change and Jenna Fisher was truly a delight in all of her scenes.
The tease when Tina Fey almost sang where do you belong 😂 (though I am still bummed they cut where do you belong 😔)
THE LINDSAY LOHAN JUMP SCARE
Avantika was a delight and her comedic timing + deadpan delivery as Karen was so perfect
Literally everything about renee rapp as regina was perfect, but especially at spring fling when she’s high on pain meds was so much fun
Someone Gets Hurt (Reprise) was absolutely phenomenal. I didn’t know it was gonna be in the movie and gave me chills the first time I heard it. Auli’i fucking crushed it
I also love how they took a homophobic insult from the original movie (“it’s not my fault you’re like in love with me”) and turned it into a new queer jam for the end credits song. Can a gay girl get an amen?
This movie is truly just a fun time

Can I have some Smalls please? It’s so good and I am absolutely obsessed with how you write her interacting with the others
7/17/24 WIP Wednesday (Open) | Smalls AU
The smile that slides across Andrew’s face is deeply unsettling, she tries to remember how the books described Andrew when he was drugged up but she doesn’t really remember it. She’d been so interested in getting to the obvious crazy romance between Neil and Kevin that she had…well she had not partaken in the likely rich narrative that the author (god?) had been weaving.
She regrets it bitterly now because the author who wrote the original book probably actually knew how to play the god forsaken sport that Janie is now needing to know.
“Yeah, I heard him loud and clear.” Andrew says, turning his unsettling smile to Kevin, “Guess she’ll just have to be your sub.”

idk why but it just randomly occurred to me that my fave category of stories is Musicals Technically Told As A Memory By A Supporting Character Based On The Opening Song (But This Limited POV And Non-Linearity Actually Has No Narrative Significance. It Does Make The Opening A Banger Though). like
mean girls (a cautionary tale) is janis and damien retelling the story of their junior year (to a new class of north shore students, i believe, but i can't remember where i read that so idk if that's real)
hamilton (alexander hamilton) is burr reflecting on his relationship with hamilton (not to a specific audience afaik, but it's obviously a post-musical perspective)
wicked (no one mourns the wicked) is glinda either telling elphaba's story to the munchkin crowd, or just having a giant sad flashback
hadestown (road to hell) is hermes singing orpheus' story (again and again and again, given the whole "it's an old song and we're gonna sing it again" sitch)
there's something so so so special about "see someone's gotta tell the tale, whether or not it turns out well" and "this is a cautionary tale" and "me? i'm the damn fool that shot him" and "goodness knows the wicked die alone" you know???

Round 1 Match 9
Propaganda
Gwen v Heather: Regina and Janis coded
The entirety of season 1 was written with their rivalry in mind
Im sorry but gweather rivalry solos the lesheather rivalry. girl I have no idea what’s between you two, but it definitely isn’t any hetero relationship. they want to make out so bad
When Heather says "you messed with the wrong reality show mister!" To Alejandro and Gwen looked at her and smiled. As a gwalejandro, aleheather, and gweather shipper this was awesome. I think it's great that they both hate each other but have really nice moments ^_^
so narratively important that season 1 of td ends with them witnessing chris being thrown into the lake and smiling at each other. bc it was a game and it’s over now. and they might not like each other still but chris is being thrown into the lake. and they can relax. and maybe outside of reality tv they could even learn to become friends
those girls wanted to kill each other so bad s1. goth prep hostility
i still cackle every time i watch the aftershow stuff from Action why were they beefing online like that 😭 theyre hilarious
The OG. They are so fucking iconic…
Dakota v Anne Maria: The one-sided beef is crazy dude
The one-sided beef guys.
