Well, in Russian anyway. And I always kinda assumed that everyone else calls them waffles too.

Until I asked my Slovene friend what he's eating and he says "napolitanke"

- You mean waffles?

- No

Which got me so confused I had to google all this.

So now I know that the word wafers exists in english, and oplatky - in czech.

And that most of the languages have two different names for these desserts.

I guess Russian just got lazy on this one.
