Genma, around a campfire: Man i get where you're coming from but. you GOTTA be sensible about this Kakashi: I don't see what the problem is. If anyone outside of the village connects me to my ANBU moniker I'll simply kill them. Genma: You physically can NOT do that. It's too easy to connect. Kakashi: You underestimate how many people I kill. by a lot. I'm good it's good. we're chill. everything's chill. On an unrelated note I gotta cut this short there's, like, 4 Iwa jonnin who think they're SOOO sneaky listening in right now so. gotta take care of them and probably their whole camp to be safe. bye ^-^ Raido: ....Weren't you planning on killing those guys tomorrow? Wasn't that like a whole thing? Genma: He thinks I underestimate how much he kills people or whatever, but really I just correctly estimate his paitence. I just wanted him to find something to do so I could go to SLEEP
Minato giving Kakashi his ANBU moniker: Kakashi can be hound! Cause he likes dogs!! It's not like I'm sending him out of the village much anyway lol, he'll be so cute!!! Kakashi 9 months later: Yes I know that everyone knows that I'm hound, Sandaime-sama, but you simply must understand that if you try to give me another designation for the sake of security I will bite you. Very hard. This moniker was a GIFT from my VERY SMART sensei. Thank you for understanding. What are they gonna do to me out there anyway? Kill me?

A lesson in life and death - Raido Namiashi x Reader
for the baby series - this one got a bit out of hand, sry
Picture for all those people who can't remember Raido 😁
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Raido knows the back of your head like the back of his hand.
And he should probably focus on what the teacher’s talking about, considering there’s surely a test around the corner, but how could he? With you this close, the sun painting gold into your hair?
“Dude!” Genma nudges him. “Stop staring.”
He stops just quick enough for Sensei’s eyes to pass over him, pretending to be deeply invested in his books. But you turn, probably sensing the way he’s burning holes into the back of your head and your eyes catch onto his, your smile the smallest thing he’s ever seen. God, you’re pretty.
-
Here’s the thing.
Everyone has to attend the Academy.
It doesn’t matter if they want to become a Shinobi if they grow up, if their family has brought forward Shinobi before.
Times are rough and everyone’s required to at least learn the basics.
That doesn’t mean that they’re treated the same.
You’re a merchant’s daughter and Raido’s a Shinobi’s son.
His mother had been Anbu, his father’s still doing his duty as a Tokubetso Jonin. He’s one of the lucky few whose parents are still alive.
You have your own set of friends, hiding in the back of the classroom during breaks.
Everyone knows you’ve got money, no matter how you dress
“Hey,” he calls after you, fingers clasped around a Kunai. “Want to train?”
-
He’d never known that Silence could be full of noise too.
It’s in those moments, training, the air filled with gasps and curses and the sounds of Kunai’s meeting, that he feels calmest.
In the hours after, back pressed into the soft ground, staring up at the clouds, you talk and he listens. One time, he dares to reach for your hand and your fingertips curl around his, strong and warm and something he yearns to hold.
“You’re so whipped,” Genma tells him when he tells him, hushed whispers when they should be doing something else.
And Raido wants to say he’s not but he’s never been good at lying, even less to a friend.
“Is that bad?” He asks instead, thinks of his future and yours.
It’s not unheard that your groups mingle, but he also knows he has no other choice but to make his father proud.
“I don’t know,” Genma admits, scrunches his nose. “We’ll see.”
-
Raido makes Genin then Chunin and you become an apprentice to your father.
There’s no more reason to meet.
His abilities have long surpassed yours.
But the meadow near the river is still your hiding place and when he meets you there after dark he’s never surprised to find Kunai’s and wooden puppets.
If he relishes in the way you’re still able to throw him over your shoulder, the closeness of your body when you block hits and fight back, he’s got you to talk to, knowing you feel the same.
You kiss him first and he’s still mad about it.
Mad that he wasn’t a little braver, a little more forward.
Biting his lip and pulling back when all he wanted was to pull you close.
It’s over a gift, the smallest something he found on a mission, a polished rock in the form of a heart, the white and black pattern mesmerizing.
But it means something to you like it meant something to him.
To bring it with him, even as he had to fight death, because he had someone waiting at home.
“Can I marry you?” He asks at barely seventeen.
-
“Lovebirds are in,” Anko sings from the bar and Genma rolls his eyes fondly when he spots your face next to his.
“Long time no see,” they all pull you into hugs, ask about your work, pay you drink after drink until he has to carry you home.
“My friends like you more than me,” he pretends to be cross, kissing you on your doorstep.
You smile against his lips.
“Only two more months,” you tell him instead as if he could forget about it.
Yesterday you picked the apartment that’s going to be yours, as in them, as in you and him.
He’s yet to see the dress you’ll be wearing, but he’s got your father on his side, the perfect rings picked out. It’s going to be a lavish wedding, especially for a village that’s still recovering. But people need happy things too.
- - -
“Hey,” you find him in the kitchen, lights out, a glass of water in his hand. “When did you come back?”
“Don’t know,” Raido admits, allowing you to take the drink from him, folding your hand into his.
He’s not allowed to tell you most of what he’s doing, least of all the details of his missions.
“Come,” you pull him in, let his head rest on your shoulder, “you’re home.”
Sometimes he thinks it’s fitting that his sword is black, coated in poison.
It fits the work he has to do.
You are the light of his life, the sun that warms his home.
He curls around like a cat finding a sunny spot and you card your hand through his hair tirelessly, attempting to ease the darkness from his mind.
It’s not always easy, this mix.
Your work is hard but in a different way.
Tiresome customers and everyone’s trying to get you to lower the price, to cut corners.
Raido never minds listening when you come home in the evening when you tell him about your day. He wishes he could do the same.
But assassinations aren’t a topic for the dinner table.
“Tell me what you’re feeling, then,” you ask. “Because your feelings matter to me. And they’re not a secret.”
-
One year in and you’re not yet pregnant.
Raido doesn’t think you’re doing anything wrong, the two of you.
But he’s not home as often as he wants to and you work long hours, trying to lighten your father's load.
“Something has to change,” he decides when he finds you crying one night, too exhausted to brush your teeth.
“Are you coming for a drink?” Genma asks, a little surprised when Raido declines.
“Other plans?” He asks.
“Yeah. I’m going to bed early.”
And Genma might grimace at the thought, but he thinks of you, curled into his embrace, and smiles.
It’s the little things that bring happiness.
- - -
Tumbling through the open window, muscles aching, shirt dirty and ripped.
“You’re back!” You call out from the kitchen, meeting him in the hallway.
“Yeah,” he sighs into your kiss. “I need to shower. I smell.”
“‘Kay!” Though you don’t let go, giggling against his lips. “I have a surprise for you. Do you wanna know right now or after you’ve showered.”
“If you don’t mind the stench, tell me right away.”
“Someone’s going to be a Dad.”
“Who?” He asks, cracking his brain trying to think. Genma’s single, Ebisu too. Could it be-
“You.”
They fail spectacularly at trying to keep it a secret.
Genma threatens to sleep on their doorstep in protest if they don’t name the child after him.
Anko threatens to do the same when it turns out to be a girl.
Nine months are too long and too short at the same time, because he’s in no way ready to hold this little life yet he can’t wait to meet her, his first-born daughter.
-
“Hey there, little one,” he picks her out of her crib at midnight, his uniform already in the wash, you’re just a few feet away.
His girl curls into his hold, curious little mouth trying to find food.
“Uhuh,” he tickles her lip with his fingertip. “I’m not mom. But I’ll get you something to eat, don’t worry.”
Her tiny hands ball into fists, banging against his torso with the strength of a hummingbird.
“Oh,” he whispers back, “so you’re a fist fighter? Good choice. Always go for the ribs.”

Which of the minor jōnin characters who aren't senseis would be the best sensei? Genma, Hayate, Izumo, Kotetsu, Raidou, etc. I think the background jōnin are underappreciated sometimes
Well, not all of them are jonin (some are chunin), so I'm gonna add under the pretense that they either got a lucky promotion or got in trouble, so now they have to deal with the genus sjdjdjdjbd.
I've read so many fanfics starting the background Konoha nins that I sometimes forget they don't play major roles oops 🫡🫡 anyway, here it goes!!!

Anko: more girls need horns. demon horns. satyr horns, lil antlers, whatever. this is self-explanatory.
Kurenai: more girls need demon horns? yeah, that's just like a totally normal thing. like girls need to be possessed more. cool. great. sexy, hot, beautiful, yes baby. demons. normal.
Asuma: can boys get horns too?
Raido: horns for everybody!
Genma: do you think if humans started headbutting a lot that somewhere down the line horns would develop?
Gai: only one way to find out ...
Kakashi: eh? ... GAI NO!

Made a little height chart of my OCs for Ninji Fight! Some character descriptions below:
Jin (age 14, she/her 🏳️‍⚧️ )
Jin is an anxious mess and mediocre kid who tries to find her place in a ruthless world. Originally from the Land of Birds, she was sent to Konoha at age 11 as a failed human experiment (didn't end up with the special ability her captors wanted), and doesn’t remember her early childhood. At first, she has a complex about being older than her cohort and not having a clear skillset, but becomes a decisive and strong leader with the help of Raido. She is later joined by her “cousin” Nobori.
Jin has Water Release. She can thus do basic jutsu like water clone jutsu, and later learns water prison jutsu. She becomes more reliant on taijutsu from sparring with Hanabi after initially facing off in the chunin exams. Jin soon becomes the de-facto captain on missions with her team. She also has a propensity to cause flooding in any place where she fights.
Jin likes to eat cake and collect plushies in her spare time. For clarification, Jin presented as male until she comes out in her 20’s as transfeminine.
Futaba (age 12, she/her 🏳️‍🌈 )
Futaba is a shy and gentle girl who adores her parents and brother. From the start, Raido sees massive potential in her and trains her to become an absolute menace on the battlefield. Though she starts out sheltered, she is impacted by Pain’s Invasion and loses her brother during the Fourth Shinobi World War. She bonds with Hanabi and they learn to process grief together :’)
Futaba has both Earth and Wind Release. She learns to summon giant carnivorous plants and picks up Flower Ninja Arts while on a mission to the Land of Vegetables. When she gets emotional, destructive earth spikes appear, much to the dismay of everyone around her. Due to her large chakra stores and wide range of abilities, Futaba is easily the strongest of her team.
Futaba likes to crochet and watch horror movies in her spare time. She crushes on Jin after Jin saves her life in battle.
Koji (age 12, he/him 🏳️‍🌈 )
Koji is a loudmouth who jokes around to hide his abandonment trauma. He is a distant relative of Anko Mitarashi, whom he calls “Auntie Anko”. Though he technically has a father, Koji is left to his own devices due to his father’s alcoholism. He is independent by nature and according to Anko, manages really well for a 12 year-old. Throughout Shippuden, Koji learns to ask for help and be more open about his feelings. He grows especially close to Eiji, a shinobi from Suna whose obnoxious teammates Koji casts a silencing jutsu on during the Chunin exams.
Koji has Fire and Lightning Release. He can make fireballs and all that stuff, but his skill also lies in making traps and explosives. He later devises his own twist on Chidori by observing Kakashi. Koji likes to burst through windows while making an introduction (not relevant when discussing his combat skills, but since Futaba and Jin have their own gag ability, Koji gets one too)
Koji likes making prank scrolls to transport ridiculous things. He is a sweets conoisseur and a really good cook.

oc | gen, slight genrai word count: 0.8k
While they're recovering from the Sound Four, Genma and Raidou get a visit in the hospital late one night.
Raidou nearly jumped out of his skin when he saw a ghostly figure walk past his bed - too tired and a little out of it on painkillers to think straight - but when he heard Genma's bed creak and the sound of his voice asking someone if they came here directly from a mission, and the quiet monotone that followed, he relaxed a little.
Even through the curtains separating their sections, Raidou could tell his childhood friend was consoling a shinobi he had become very familiar with over the years, still in uniform and a little filthy. Genma was scolding him for trekking dirt into a hospital and that he didn't have to cry over small potatoes. The reassurance that the blood on his clothes wasn't his didn't help in the slightest.
He couldn't see his face but heard the hoarse responding, "I'm not." Raidou could imagine the kind of expression the young man made, the kind he always had whenever Genma got hurt, and smiled a bit.
Eventually, Shiranui was able to convince Taeru to go home, clean up, and rest - best not bring germs and dried blood with him on his next visit, right? He must be exhausted, too. The tokujo were graced with the peace and quiet of their room once more after Raidou teased a little Genma about having such a doting baby brother. He was told to shut up and go back to sleep.
In the morning, the men are greeted with pumpkin broth alongside their expected hospital slop. The attending nurse chews Tae out for not letting anyone treat his wounds until after his visit and he pretends not to notice the heat of Genma's stare.
Tae gets round two of scolding after she leaves and Genma lays into him about the importance of wound care while apologizing to Raidou for not knowing what he liked to eat - getting just Gen-nii's favorites instead; his ear was twisted for not listening.
Genma makes a remark that he's only 30 and going to have grey hairs because of this little twerp, Tae's mumbled response was that he was taller anyway but even if he did, it'd mean they'd match. Raidou thinks rhetorically between bites of bread if Tae thought being cute would get him out of trouble.
The answer is apparently yes, since - although exasperated - Genma's expression softens still, and with a sigh, he tells the young man to sit on the floor so he can braid his hair.
It's not like it's the first time Raidou's been privy to moments like this; small bubbles of peace between their bustling, dangerous lives as shinobi. All of them were were aware that at any moment, all of it could be taken away. Hell, the reason Genma and Raidou were here in the first place was because they were defeated by Orochimaru's monstrous henchmen. The fact that they were so young stung both in the way that their opponents were just kids and that they were defeated. They weren't technically full jonin, just tokujo, but it still stung.
He wondered if those kids were Tsunade sent would be alright.
Tuning back into the idle conversation, Raidou watched his best friend carefully part and braid the younger man's hair. Genma mentioned how long it'd gotten, asking if he was taking care of himself properly - Tae's response was simply a low hum with his eyes closed.
Ahh, that must've felt nice, then.
Raidou briefly imagined what Genma's fingers running through his own hair would be like, but with his brother here all that produced was the unflattering mental image of himself with long hair in a comical way. He shook the thought away immediately.
His gaze turned to the two other men. It's not an unfamiliar sight; Genma's been tying Tae's hair since it was long enough to tie, long enough to cause the boy distress, and now as he's reclaiming his self image. Raidou was always in the periphery, as his older brother's - Gen-nii's - best friend. The comfortable quiet is nice, he thinks to himself.
It's nice enough for Raidou to reach over to try and pat his junior's head (although Namiashi was technically outranked), his expression the most peaceful it's looked in a long time; but that's disturbed as his wrist is held inches away and Tae asks what he's doing.
Raidou tries to awkwardly sputter his way through an explain for his actions, something about feeling the right moment - looking to his best friend in the other hospital bed for help. It felt as though he'd been rejected from petting a stray, or maybe an affectionate housecat who was sweet with only certain people and hissed at the rest. He could make a guess as to who he was right now.
Though all Genma does is take a second to hold the senbon away from his mouth, then laugh at his friend's discomfort under his baby brother's typical intense, off-putting gaze.
Heat slowly creeping up to his ears from both embarrassment and the sight of Genma's full-chested laughter, even if the cost was being hospitalized and wanting the earth to swallow himself whole, Raidou didn't mind moments like these.
