we are not free characters ranked on how aware they are of minnow’s homosexuality
Keiko: Keiko canonically knows Minnow is gay <3
Tommy: Tommy is both incredibly insightful and undeniably queer so yeah I think he clocks it pretty early on. I headcanon him as aroace so i can honestly see him looking at the way Minnow acts towards Twitchy and objectively thinking like “ok yeah that’s exactly how Shig used to treat Yum-yum before they started dating that must just be how the Ito boys act when they have a crush”
Frankie: tbh I headcanon Frankie’s Uncle Yas as gay (old man living alone in San Francisco whose nephew stays with him because “he needs someone to take care of him”) and i think Yas has been like. subtle about it but not overly secretive and so they don’t discuss it but Frankie has seen the old photographs and letters Yas keeps in the attic and has put the pieces together and so I feel like he also clocks Minnow relatively early on because of his previous familiarity with the concept of homosexuality
Yuki: I also headcanon Yuki as gay (both because she likes softball and because of Bette’s line about “I don’t think I’ll ever understand her—she’s fifteen! You’d think she’d recognize a handsome boy when she saw one, but her disinterest is palpable”) so I feel like she knows what’s up.
Mas: In a very big-brother way, Mas has always known that there is something undeniably different about Minnow and he hasn’t quite been able to put a finger on what it is, but he has his suspicions.
Shig: Very similarly to Mas, Shig is aware of Minnow’s differentness but has always chalked it up to him being shy like Tommy. I do have a WIP where Minnow comes out to Shig and Shig is like “oh fuck everything is starting to make sense” so yeah i think he does not know but if he was told it would explain a lot for him and make perfect sense.
Mary: Has not put much thought into it but if told would be like “yeah obviously”
Stan: Has not put much thought into it but if told would not be surprised.
Yum-yum: Has not put much thought into it but if told would be kind of surprised.
Bette: I am honestly unsure if Bette is aware of homosexuality as a concept.
Aiko: I am pretty sure Aiko is not aware of homosexuality as a concept.
Twitchy: Does not know and will never find out

🌂 for a weather-themed headcanon ; 🌍 for a travel-themed headcanon ; 🐈 for a pet/animal-themed headcanon ; 😨 for a fear-themed headcanon / spin! the! wheel!
YUKI NAKANO — WEATHER :
big fan of rain when it's still sunny out ! hates going outside in the rain though... just wants to admire it from the inside and feel #moody for a bit and then they get a little annoyed... why's it still raining...... hello... doesn't even have a reason to go outside anyway so. idk what they're so mad about.
MAXIME D'AUREVILLE — TRAVEL :
the trip from his childhood home in france to where he spent his teen years / adulthood was... not great. it was his first time on a plane and he felt really nauseous & generally was having a bad fucking time with the aspect of moving consider the fact that he was doing it alone + he was dealing with the grief of losing his immediate family + uplifiting his entire life. still has bad associations with planes & will opt for a roadtrip or trains if it comes to having to do long-distance domestic travel.
ASHTON HAYNES — PET/ANIMAL :
his daughters, maya & nina, really really want a pet. ashton always said no, even when he was still married. would say that it's because he doesn't like pets (false), he just didn't want his then-wife to have her allergies flare up so he decided it would be better for him to take the blame. he did get them each a wappy dog from ebay that they love. would love to get a real dog but is concerned that it would be Bad Parenting to go back on what he said years ago.
GUINEVERE ALONSO — FEAR :
ineve will tell people that her biggest fear is performing in front of large crowds - a blatant lie. she loves performance and she loves the act of it and she loves the attention of it, she just is worried about slipping up about the whole siren thing so... a real fear, however irrational, is drowning. she physically can't drown but god, the thought of diving into the water only to realize that she's drowning? terrifying. that's her life, the only thing keeping her going.

good day madam, i am a hungry lesbian in need of your gayest wresting moments. can you spare me a cup of gay?
Anon you have come to the right person. Everything's been leading up to this. This is what it's all been for. This will probably be long.
Anon I got so excited about this I even solicited my friends for THEIR gayest moments so I'll do those first. You were recommended:
Mahiro Kiryu briefly getting a takarazuka gimmick in TJPW's Hyper Misao produced show HYPE
Giulia vs Konami from the 5 Star GP 2021, which was described as "the first match I remember watching and going OH MY GOD KONAMI AND GIULIA ARE FUCKING", and their feud did later give us a promo where Konami was like "Hey Giulia, you know how I bully you and you like it?" and Giulia was like "Ahaha, yeah?" and Konami was like "Well that's basically our entire relationship, so there you go." She did have examples.
pretty much anything with Raku/Pom Harajuku/Yuki Aino in TJPW, who my friends have lovingly dubbed the Pomycule
Okay enough from them though. You didn't ask them, you asked me and I asked them. Now for the me. I think it's important to note as well, anon, that not all of the gay shit in wrestling happens in a match, or even in the ring. Sometimes it's just shit on social media, a lot of the time it happens at press conferences, you must maintain constant vigilance. Anyway.
Whatever the fuck Syuri and Utami have going on, which I wrote about here.
There was the time Himeka kissed Syuri last year
There was Komomo enjoying getting beat up by Saki Kashima a Little Too Much, which I wrote about here.
There was the exchange between Utami and Syuri at the press conference for Stardom Gold Rush last year
There was Tam Nakano starting an entire faction to, in her own words, surround herself with women with big boobs (their focus has since shifted)
There was AliKaba, the tag team of Giulia and Syuri, which was basically just one long enactment of gay longing from Giulia
There was the time Giulia posted this picture with the caption ^-^ and then deleted it
There was the time FWC, the tag team of Hazuki and Koguma, spent 5 hours in the bath together (sadly they just talked about that I don't have pictures)
another time FWC both got matching bruises at the same time, and then later confirmed that yes they got them together. In the bath again
There were both Cosmic Rules matches at Stardom in Showcase 1 & 2 which I unfortunately don't have any great screenshots of but I'm positive were inspired by lesbian porn
There are constant small exchanges like this that don't even have a lot of context they just happen all the time
There was the time Hikari Noa had a hardcore match against Nao Kakuta and after they did this
There was the time Mina Shirakawa spat on Saya Kamitani and then licked her face
There was this shit in Act Wres Girlz, which for the record kind of depressingly does not do gay stories super frequently but has legitimately I think the highest percentage of out wrestlers I've seen in any company
There was the brief Tam Syuri feud which shockingly somehow did not involve anyone kissing but had the vibe that they were kissing mentally the entire time
There was every single exchange Tam and Natsupoi had before they realized they were still in love with each other but ESPECIALLY their cage match
And, for my money, the gay moment that lives the largest and dearest and most bittersweet in my mind was when Tam and Unagi had their singles match as part of the 5 Star GP last year, which was, unknown to us at the time, something of a farewell tour for Unagi before she went freelance, where afterwards they hugged in the ring for two minutes and then kissed.
I'm gonna cut myself off there but trust me I could go on and on and on for way too long but that's why I think you should watch for yourself. Wrestling is always moving and new gay stuff is always happening. In conclusion,
#long post#sorry I have low energy so this is just a shotgun blast of content rather than like real curation or explanation lol#I hope it works anyway#my magnum opus

Another Thing Blue Eye Samurai Got Wrong
There were women who fought as fighters and samurai (or more often called as onna-bugeisha or onna-musha) for their clan. They didn't have to hide their femininity. There is a long history of female warriors in Japan that date back to an Empress named Jingū (she ruled from 201 to 269 AD). I bring you two of the greats:
Tomoe Gozen
She was skilled at archery, the sword and the use of the naginata. Tomoe is one of the most feared women because of her cleverness and offensive tactical skills. Her men trusted and respected her. During the Battle of Awazu, she killed the Musashi clan leader. Sadly, there is no more records of her after that. Tomoe is the most known and celebrated of the onna-bugeisha.
Nakano Takeko
Like many samurai of her time, she wore the typical samurai armor but instead chose to wear a red hakama. This red hakama became a symbol of not just her femininity but empowerment. She fought in the Boshin War against Imperialists who wanted the Emperor to rise to power (they eventually won during the Battle of Toba–Fushimi).
Similar to the Kiheitai (or the ad hoc army by the Imperialists), she led the Jōshitai or women's army fighting on the side of the Tokugawa Shogunate.
Nakano was wounded with a rifle shot and rather than allowing her enemies to parade her lifeless body as a trophy, she ordered her sister (also a capable warrior as with her mother. all 3 women fought alongside each other) to cut her head off and burry her head in secret so her enemies would not have a reason to disgrace her. Her head was buried under a pine tree and her beloved naginata was given to a temple.
In Aizu during the Autumn festival, girls parade around the streets wearing a red hakama and a white headband to honor Nakano and the women fighters of the Jōshitai.
Other female fighters include Yamamoto Yae aka "Bakumatsu Joan of Arc" and Hangaku Gozen or Lady Hangaku.
______________________________________________________________
There is a reason the filmakers of Lady Snowblood (a film Blue Eye Samurai heavily borrows from) didn't chose to disguise Yuki as a man when she enacted her revenge.

we are not free. but we are not alone. one song for each We Are Not Free Character
playlist notes under the cut
I. Minnow Ito - Everything Stays - Adventure Time Everything stays, right where you've left it / Everything stays, but it still changes / Ever so slightly, daily and nightly / In little ways, when everything stays The fact that both of Minnow’s chapters take place in San Francisco and bookend the novel make this the perfect choice for him as he reflects on how Japantown has both changed yet stayed the same as the city of his childhood
II. Shig Ito - Little League - Conan Gray And when we were younger / We wore our hearts right on our sleeves / Why did we ever have to leave? / Little league Shig’s chapter is basically him reflecting on his childhood in Japantown as he prepares to leave it and I think this song is perfect for that! There’s also the line “Do you remember days on our old block?/ Messin' with our neighbors who called the cops” which is SO Shig&Twitchy-core… them and their shenanigans!!
III. Yum-yum Oishi - You Are Loved - Defiance, Ohio And as the story unfolds over time / Things we once knew, they do dissolve into the sky / She swears she sees a brand new constellation / Every time somebody we know dies I love the bit in Yum-yum’s chapter where Tommy and Minnow are making up constellations and I have always associated Yum-yum with astral imagery because of it! I think this song really speaks to her unsurety about the future and I love the line “the radio plays a familiar song,” because Yumyum’s chapter is also where we get the first reference to Mas’ Silvertone radio!
IV. Bette Nakano - Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying - Sabrina Carpenter 'Cause I'm young and I'm dumb / I do stupid things when it comes to love / And even if I always end up crying / No, you can't blame a girl for trying I feel like I don’t even have to explain this one like this encapsulates Bette’s vibe EXACTLY!!! She would be such a teen pop girlie <3
V. Frankie Fujita - Amy aka Spent Gladiator 1 - The Mountain Goats Play with matches if you think you need to play with matches / Seek out the hidden places where the fire burns hot and bright / Find where the heat's unbearable and stay there if you have to / Don't hurt anybody on your way up to the light Thinking about this song as a Frankie song makes me FERAL!! something about the fire in this verse as a metaphor for his anger, him knowing he needs to do whatever he can to make sure he doesn’t hurt anybody with that anger… the first line of this song is “Do every stupid thing that makes you feel alive”...yeah. i luv you frankie fujita <3
VI. Stan Katsumoto - Once More with Feeling - Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. Don't let the people make you think / That just because you're young you're useless / You know it's not naive to think that you can change the things around / And that no man is an island This is mostly in reference to Stan wanting to go to college to be a lawyer for the ACLU which is a piece of his character that I absolutely LOVE!!
VII. Aiko Harano - Warrior Girl - Nicole Visco Warrior Girl only goes to where she wants to / Warrior Girl maybe has a heavy sword / Warrior Girl has no idea where she jumps to / But she jumps to where she wants to / And she's never ever bored This is absolutely Aiko’s song!!! She is a scrappy little warrior girl and I adore her for it!! There is also a refrain in this song about “maybe someday / there'll be some way I could get to roam free” which. yeah. I love you Aiko <3
VIII. Yuki Nakano - Crazy Dreams - Carrie Underwood Here's to you free souls, you firefly chasers / Tree climbers, porch swingers, air guitar players / Here's to you fearless dancers, shaking walls in your bedrooms / There's a lot of wonder left inside of me and you / Thank God even crazy dreams come true This just reminds me a lot of Yuki’s dream of playing in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League!! especially because there’s a part of the song that says “Never let a bad day be enough / To go and talk you into giving up” which reminds me so much of Yuki’s chapter!!
IX. Mary Katsumoto - Something About Lemons - Chumped And every day, I grow a little more resentful / Of the choices that I did or didn't make / Wanted this to feel a little more eventful / Every day that I'm awake just feels the same This is SO Mary!! especially the line about being resentful of the choices that she didn’t (get to) make… like that’s literally the plot of her chapter.
X. Kiyoshi Tani - Lion’s Teeth - The Mountain Goats And my arms get sore / And my palms start to sweat / And the tears roll down my face / Till my cheeks are hot and red and soaking wet John Darnielle called this song a “revenge fantasy” about standing up to his abusive stepfather and I think that Kiyoshi deserves that kind of catharsis.
XI. Mas Ito - human - Christina Perri But I'm only human / And I bleed when I fall down / I'm only human / And I crash and I break down Song about pretending to be strong and fake a smile and force a laugh until you literally can’t anymore and it fucking destroys you… hello Mas Ito!!
XII. Keiko Kimura - Who Knew - P!nk That last kiss, I'll cherish until we meet again / And time makes it harder, I wish I could remember / But I keep your memory, you visit me in my sleep / My darling, who knew? Fucked up behavior of me to choose this for Keiko but yeah it’s about Twitchy. Feels self-explanatory.
XIII. Twitchy Hashimoto - Brother - Kodaline We've taken different paths / And traveled different roads / I know we'll always end up on the same one when we're old / And when you're in the trenches / And you're under fire, I will cover you Very much chosen with the Twitchy&Shig dynamic in mind but also because Twitchy literally refers to the other characters as his “siblings back in Topaz”... and something about the line about “we were… the kings and queens” combined with the motif of royalty surrounding Twitchy & his relationship with Keiko (“company of kings,” Aiko’s thought about Twitchy treating Keiko like a “queen,” Keiko’s comparing Twitchy to a prince, the Cinderella motifs in Keiko’s chapter…. yeah) and ofc the reference to trench warfare… this is his fucking song.
XIV. Tommy Harano - Landslide - Fleetwood Mac Well, I've been afraid of changin' / 'Cause I've built my life around you / But time makes you bolder / Even children get older / And I'm getting older too something about Tommy finally making the decision to leave his parents behind… he’s built his life around a family that doesn’t treat him right but time has made him bolder as he’s grown up. and like. the references to snow in both the book and the song are beautiful and aplenty but i don’t have the time to unpack that.
XV. All Of Us - Disposable Youth - No-No Boy Disposable you / Disposable me / Disposable hearts / Indestructible teens Off an album named for the year the Japanese American incarceration of World War II began, this is songwriter Julian Saporiti’s “imagining of what it would have been like to be ever experience a Memorial Day bbq with people who looked like me” and has a very similar vibe to the scene at Tanforan where they celebrate of the infield after the Americans defeated the Japanese at the Battle of Midway. somethin’ bout teenagers getting to be wild and loving and free <3
#we are not free#wanf#on my want playlist grind#also. forgot the link the actual playlist to the last one lmfao my bad#I've posted this before but this is the new & improved version#minnow ito#shig ito#yum-yum oishi#bette nakano#frankie fujita#stan katsumoto#aiko harano#yuki nakano#mary katsumoto#kiyoshi tani#mas ito#keiko kimura#twitchy hashimoto#tommy harano#playlist#playlists#my playlists#snarkiestchicken#igizzz

To be a Father
The air was biting and the wind wouldn’t let up. Sakumo could feel a light wriggling against his chest where his baby was pressed flush against him, taking in all the warmth his father could give to him. Kakashi had only been born a few months prior, but now it was early winter and his life was in danger.
Sakumo followed his nose, taking shelter in a nearby burrow that his trusty old white wolf, Ookami, had created as a den for him and his pack. “Sorry old pal. It looks like I’ll have to rely on you and the rest of the pack just one more night,” whispered the young man apologetically.
The new father produced his squirming bundle of leathers and furs topped with a few matching white wisps of hair from beneath his clothing. Ookami sniffed him twice and shared with Sakumo an accepting glance. With utmost care he took Kakashi from his father further into the den where he deposited him with one of the nursing females of the pack. She could take care of him.
The brief respite allowed Sakumo a rare moment to contemplate the events that had brought him to such a low. The Animal User hating paranoid Nohara played a sizable role in them, but Sakumo wanted to go further– to find something joyful in all his suffering. As Ookami returned to Sakumo’s side and rested his heavy head in his pack leader’s lap, Sakumo did just that. He went further.
Yuki was the first to recognize his worth in this world, so it was no surprise to him that when it came time for him to choose a mate, he chose her. He’d traveled with his pack for a long time before he found her. She had been traveling with the Senju in search of a new home. There were many who were skeptical of Animal Users, but Yuki was not one of them. She admired his skills, was enamored by Ookami, and supported him in the advocation of his people. They were wed during their travels.
When the Senju founded The Senju Village, there were many who traveled with them that wished to remain amongst their friendly travel companions. Thus, The Senju Village quickly became known simply as The Leaf Village for its dense temperate forests. Yuki had always dreamed of the day her nomadic life would end and when she would have a home of her own to settle down in so she jumped at the chance to stay with the Senju. Sakumo did as well.
Luckily for him, the Senju leader, Hashirama, was a hospitable man who welcomed all into his growing village. He had his vigilant younger brother, Tobirama, assessing each potential citizen. Sakumo was deemed not only benign, but beneficial to their settlement. Thus Sakumo began a humble and peaceful life with his wife there.
During this formative time for The Leaf Village, Hashirama proved just how gregarious and family oriented he could be. He encouraged many wandering clans to join them and held many jovial celebrations to mark their entries. The one that stood out most to Sakumo was a festival Hashirama aptly named: Matsurimara. He was determined to participate.
It began with a month of harai: ritual abstinence. Sakumo would’ve been lying if he said this part was easy. He had become quite intimate with Yuki. Her long snow white locks and slender curves called to him. They slept wrapped up in each other's arms nightly and there were mornings that the ache between his legs made it a struggle to pull himself away from her.
Somehow, Sakumo made it through the month. It was late December and the day of the matsuri was upon him. He woke before the sun that day and dressed warmly, knowing what would come next. It was a few hour’s walk to The Nakano River. He and a slew of hopeful men accompanied the Senju brothers upstream to a place where the water crashed down from a cliff. By now the sun had risen and the mist from the waterfall glistened, giving off a mystical aura.
Each man took his turn to remove his clothing and jump in. They bore the weight and temperature of the falls for as long as they could in a display of misogi: ritual bathing for purification. Upon entering the icy falls, Sakumo gasped involuntarily. He no longer felt any desire for his wife. He scrubbed himself vigorously in an attempt to warm himself even a little, but this was as fruitless as his shriveled manhood felt in the frigid deluge. He quickly lost feeling in his fingers and toes; it was then he knew he had to leave the water.
His breathing didn’t slow down until minutes after he was dry and reclothed. He watched patiently as the others, including the Senju brothers, finished their misogi. Then, the men trekked back to The Leaf Village.
Waiting for them were festivities unlike anything Sakumo had ever seen. While the men were away, their lovers had decorated the paths with elaborate colorful paper and bamboo trappings. There were offerings of sake and food surrounding many mikoshi shrines dedicated to various fertility kami with well known names such as, Inari.
The men then took up these shrines and for the next hour they paraded the kamis’ blessings around the village. The uplifting music and encouraging cheers of their partners convinced Sakumo and the other men to find the strength to persevere until it was time for the naorai feast. The mikoshi were returned to their places and the men finally sat down.
Nothing felt more gratifying to Sakumo that day than eating a large meal of delicious blessed offerings with his wife beside him. When they were satisfied and Hashirama had his fair share of sake, the true festivities began. The men who hadn’t had enough exercise, participated in feats of athleticism. There was also music and dance for several hours.
Late in the night, a slightly inebriated Hashirama called the festivities to a close with a wish of luck, prosperity, and most importantly fertility. Some stayed behind to assist with the cleaning efforts, but many, Sakumo included, went home to try out that luck. If Kakashi’s existence was anything, it was evidence of that luck.
Months later, he was holding his wife from behind and caressing the spot that held what she insisted was their unborn son.
“Since he is your son. What will you call him?” She asked him.
Sakumo never felt like a decision was more important. “Well,” he hesitated, thinking it over. “If I am the product of my parents, then I’m like the crops in the field. If you are the snow that blankets that field in winter, then I would very much like him to be the protector of that field. I’ll call him, Kakashi– our little scarecrow.”
A snowflake flitted in through the entrance of the burrow, wresting Sakumo from his thoughts when it landed on his cheek just below his left eye. Ookami lifted his head when Sakumo started. The man reciprocated his companion’s support with a heavy pat on the head and Ookami returned to his more relaxed state on his lap. “Yuki…” Sakumo whispered into the howling wind, “I know he is too young now, but one day, that boy will live up to his name.” He chuckled as a cutting wind chastised him. “I know you won’t make it easy for us. Fatherhood could never be so simple.”
He paused for another moment, forming his thoughts while breathing in his bitter-sweet reality. “Tell ya what, If we can make it through this Winter, I’ll be a real father and I’ll find us a real territory. Just like you wanted for him.”
Outside of the burrow, the storm began to calm.
