s.e. hinton, the outsiders, 1967 // traci chee, we are not free, 2021
thinking now always and forever about how chapter one of we are not free is an homage to chapter one of the outsiders. using the actions, language, and dynamics of such a classic story about prejudice, found family & belonging as a springboard for a story about japanese american teenagers during world war ii is literally so smart holy shit. i have been deeply interested in the way the outsiders musical on broadway right now integrates race into their portrayal of that classic narrative and traci chee’s loose take on that premise makes my head go approximately one million miles an hour!!!

Note
Does Souchi somehow care about his siblings deep down ? Also, did he enjoy the cake his cousin gave him for his birthday ?
Hello! Souichi ain't in at the moment, but this silly guy named Frankie Frankenstein* can provide an answer best as he can.
I think... in a lot of ways, Souichi was an incredible pain in the ass of a kid. But not in a way that's too special to just him. When you're young, wanting to be special, especially if you got the kinda dark tastes that maybe are weird to other kids... you don't always know how to act right.
So to me, as a humble fan, I think that Souichi probably really just wanted his siblings to think he was impressive, and cool. I think it's very telling that in his fantasies about being a scary grown up running a house of horrors, he still invokes his family members, you know? Like the selfish 'one day they'll see!' kind of stories a kid tells himself.
But I think that selfish desire to be impressive and scary shows he at least cared what they think about him. Maybe when he's older, they still won't get along! If he never stops being a pain until they're all adults, they'd probably still be in their rights not to want to hang out with him.
But then again, maybe those kinds of relationships are easier once you don't all live in the same house, too.
And I think he very much enjoyed that cake. I think the fact that his cousin hadn't given up on him entirely meant a lot to him; maybe more then he's really any good at saying.
I like to think when he's older, maybe he'll thank her properly. I also like to think maybe one day he could meet Oshikiri, and those two could calm down a little by being each others weird goth friends.
...Ah! Incidentally, for any Ito fans, let me humbly recommend a manga I have become very fond of! "Souboutei Kowasubeshi", aka "Souboutei Must be Destroyed" by Fujita Kazuhiro. You can find it on mangahere (which should have any ito chapters that lead to broken links on this blog, incidentally! My bad.) and i've found myself incredibly gripped by it. It reminds me in all the best ways of Black Paradox in it's mix of absurdist and horror, but much longer form. And maybe more... optimistic, maybe....? Well you'll see what I mean if you find it interesting. Not without it's flaws, but what is.
Ah! Hold on, I do have a message here from Souichi himself I think...? Lets see if I can read it through all the black ichor.... ah! Of course.
"Kyahahahaha!"

mixed signals
Hyodo likes Tatara.
He can't come out and say that, though.
hyodo/fujita, 1.4k words.
on ao3.
There's something special about Fujita Tatara.
Hyodo watches him out of the corner of his eye, in the practice studio. He's improved, definitely- nowhere near the level of a pro, or even of Hyodo himself, but he has the magnetic, glowing quality that Shizuku and Sengoku can feel in him too. As he watches, Fujita trips, stumbles, falls on his ass, and the teacher bursts out laughing. Fujita chuckles, grinning bashfully.
Hyodo watches.
He wonders if he'll ever get to say half the things he wants to Tatara.
You fascinate me, he thinks, tracking the other boy's movements as he stands back up, brushing off his pant legs. You're kinda cute when you trip over yourself. I want to get to know you outside of dance and within it.
He can't say that, of course, because Hyodo's thoughts prefer to run around the inside of his head instead of coming out of his mouth, so he turns his head away and works on the choreography for his and Shizuku's next competition. He ignores the laughter coming from Fujita's corner of the practice room.
Something's odd. His breath speeds up, but not because of the dance.
~~~~~~
"Hyodo-kun!" Fujita chases him down outside of the studio, and Hyodo turns back, bag slung over his shoulder. The sun's already setting, and its warm light bathes the entire street in orange and yellow, setting his hair aflame and illuminating the oncoming Fujita.
Hyodo looks at him. He's shorter than him.
"You left something," Fujita pants, catching up. He's waving something- a paper- and Hyodo recognizes it as the notes for his most recent choreography.
"Ah." Hyodo says. "Thanks." He motions to take it, and Fujita hands it over. Unlike some of the shojo manga that Hyodo's seen in Shizuku's room, when she had flushed and stammered and said they were for a manga trade with a friend, their hands don't brush. Hyodo doesn't know why he wants to be in shojo manga scenarios with Fujita, and, franky, doesn't give it much thought.
Fujita's smiling face- the blissful beam from the first time he had seen him dance, with Shizuku at the Mikasa Cup, of all places- flashes in front of his eyes again, and he turns away.
"Uh." Fujita says awkwardly. "See you tomorrow?"
Hyodo looks at him.
"Mm." He replies. "Tomorrow."
He starts back down the street. He doesn't look back to see if Fujita is watching him go, or if he's turned back to the studio already.
~~~~~~
Hyodo's a little jealous of Shizuku, sometimes.
He's not entirely sure why. Maybe it's because Fujita blushes at any word of praise or slight smile from her. Then again, he doesn't know what the reaction would be if he were to praise Fujita, because the urge has never struck him to find out, but once he thinks about it, the idea sticks in the back of his mind like a particularly boggy step twirl. Would he react like when Sengoku casually, roughly throws out a nice word, and it's the approval of a mentor? Would he react like he does at praise from Kugimiya or Shizuku or Chinatsu- like it's hard-won, a rosy flush creeping up his cheeks and a flustered, joyful smile hovering helplessly on his face? He wonders.
He seems to spend a lot of time thinking about Fujita, lately.
Take her reins, he had whispered to himself. I know you can do it, Fujita. You've fascinated me. I know there's something special about you.
Fujita shines when he dances. He remembers leading Fujita once, when they had been practicing something for Sengoku, feeling the other boy's warm hand in his, moving together- Fujita had been shaking, but that's beside the point.
Hyodo picks up his phone.
"Hello?" The voice on the other end says. One of the few names in his contacts. "Kiyoharu, what's the matter?"
"Nothing." He says after a moment. "Do you want to get something to eat?"
He can almost feel her surprise, palpable through the phone line.
"Now?" She asks.
He shrugs.
"Sure." Hyodo pauses. "The Chinese dumpling place?"
~~~~~~
Hyodo isn't the kind of person who invites people out to eat, so he can understand, distantly, why Shizuku looks a little surprised that he actually showed up. He is hungry, though, so they get a table and fill out the paper to order a couple sets of dumpling. He fiddles with his chopsticks. Shizuku watches him.
"So," Shizuku breaks the silence, "did you want to talk about something?"
Hyodo shrugs.
"Is it about the next tournament?" She asks, and apparently Hyodo's non-reaction is enough to prompt her to try something else. "Is it about Fujita-kun?"
He looks up.
"I knew it." She sighs. "Hyodo, weren't you two getting along alright recently? What's the issue now?"
Hyodo purses his lips and pours some soy sauce into his ceramic spoon.
She considers him. Her eyes are soft, but sharp. As expected of his partner.
"Does this have to do with why you're always staring at him during practice?" She presses, and Hyodo glances up sharply. She had noticed? Was he so blatant? Shizuku sighs.
"I don't know what's going on between you two." She bemoans, picking up her set of chopsticks and splitting them apart. The fracture is perfect, leaving no splinters, and separates with a satisfying crack.
"Nothing." Hyodo says, fiddling with his utensils. "It's just..."
Shizuku follows the movement of his eyes.
"Do you know what Tatara is good at?" She asks, intentionally using his first name, sans-honorific. "Tatara makes people want to dance."
Hyodo glances to the side. A ghost of the rush of that tango- his dancer's high- floods his bloodstream. He almost shivers.
"Does he make you want to dance?" He asks.
She shrugs.
"When I danced with him, and he copied your choreography- it was like you were there, but different." She says, drawing a pattern on the table with her fingertip. "Speaking as a follow, Tatara sets a tempo that magnifies the effect of his partner- the frame to a flower, really."
Their food comes. Both kids fall silent as a thick-set man in an apron sets two Cantonese-style steamers on their table. As he walks away, Shizuku separates them and lifts the lid off one, grabbing two, and Hyodo selects one from each.
"Fujita," he says, roughly, "is a frame?"
Shizuku, mid-bite, looks up.
"Mm." She replies, chewing, swallowing. "I think... his style of dancing is one that we've never seen before, Hyodo."
Hyodo eats thoughtfully. What is the feeling he's felt at watching Fujita dance?
Fujita's beaming, exhilarated face comes back into Hyodo's view.
He had looked... happy.
Hyodo wonders if that's what he wants. To love dancing that much. To be that exuberant just from being allowed to step messily on a polished dance floor.
He shoves another dumpling in his mouth. Shizuku chuckles. She looks like she knows more than she's letting on.
~~~~~~
They've run into each other on the way to the studio. Fujita seems a little nervous, walking next to Hyodo, eyes darting to the other boy and away again. Hyodo keeps his eyes focused on the road in front of them.
"Fujita." He says, suddenly.
Fujita turns to him, eyes wide.
"Yes?" He asks, and this is awkward, because Hyodo doesn't know what he wanted to say, besides Fujita's name.
"Do you want to get some food after this?" he says instead. Fujita stares up at him, disbelieving, for a second, because Hyodo isn't the type to start conversations, let alone invite people anywhere. If he wants to talk to Shizuku, he shows up at her house. If he wants to be a bit social, he stops by the studio to be heckled by Sengoku.
This marks two times in two days he's suggested getting food with someone else. Something is clearly different.
It isn't until Fujita breaks his surprise and smiles at him, nodding, answering in the affirmative, and Hyodo suddenly wants to kiss him, that he realizes what's changed. For the moment, he settles for watching Fujita. His hand twitches. He wants to touch him on the shoulder, or the upper arm, or take his hand in his. This is definitely different, but there's something weirdly magnetic about Fujita.
He doesn't have to say anything now, though. He'll allow himself to simmer a little longer.

Racing is a sport that routinely sees male and female riders compete on a level playing field and we are proud to continue this great tradition at King Abdulaziz Racecourse during Saudi Cup weekend.
“A jockeys’ challenge is always a crowd pleaser and we think that with seven women and seven men competing over four races, as well as plenty of family entertainment and top class hospitality, we are offering an exciting and unique event to the people of Riyadh and wider Saudi Arabia.
“It is interesting that we have received more than 300 entries for the four support races on the Kingdom Day card, demonstrating the interest that is already being generated within the industry for Saudi Cup weekend.

we are not free characters ranked on how aware they are of minnow’s homosexuality
Keiko: Keiko canonically knows Minnow is gay <3
Tommy: Tommy is both incredibly insightful and undeniably queer so yeah I think he clocks it pretty early on. I headcanon him as aroace so i can honestly see him looking at the way Minnow acts towards Twitchy and objectively thinking like “ok yeah that’s exactly how Shig used to treat Yum-yum before they started dating that must just be how the Ito boys act when they have a crush”
Frankie: tbh I headcanon Frankie’s Uncle Yas as gay (old man living alone in San Francisco whose nephew stays with him because “he needs someone to take care of him”) and i think Yas has been like. subtle about it but not overly secretive and so they don’t discuss it but Frankie has seen the old photographs and letters Yas keeps in the attic and has put the pieces together and so I feel like he also clocks Minnow relatively early on because of his previous familiarity with the concept of homosexuality
Yuki: I also headcanon Yuki as gay (both because she likes softball and because of Bette’s line about “I don’t think I’ll ever understand her—she’s fifteen! You’d think she’d recognize a handsome boy when she saw one, but her disinterest is palpable”) so I feel like she knows what’s up.
Mas: In a very big-brother way, Mas has always known that there is something undeniably different about Minnow and he hasn’t quite been able to put a finger on what it is, but he has his suspicions.
Shig: Very similarly to Mas, Shig is aware of Minnow’s differentness but has always chalked it up to him being shy like Tommy. I do have a WIP where Minnow comes out to Shig and Shig is like “oh fuck everything is starting to make sense” so yeah i think he does not know but if he was told it would explain a lot for him and make perfect sense.
Mary: Has not put much thought into it but if told would be like “yeah obviously”
Stan: Has not put much thought into it but if told would not be surprised.
Yum-yum: Has not put much thought into it but if told would be kind of surprised.
Bette: I am honestly unsure if Bette is aware of homosexuality as a concept.
Aiko: I am pretty sure Aiko is not aware of homosexuality as a concept.
Twitchy: Does not know and will never find out

we are not free. but we are not alone. one song for each We Are Not Free Character
playlist notes under the cut
I. Minnow Ito - Everything Stays - Adventure Time Everything stays, right where you've left it / Everything stays, but it still changes / Ever so slightly, daily and nightly / In little ways, when everything stays The fact that both of Minnow’s chapters take place in San Francisco and bookend the novel make this the perfect choice for him as he reflects on how Japantown has both changed yet stayed the same as the city of his childhood
II. Shig Ito - Little League - Conan Gray And when we were younger / We wore our hearts right on our sleeves / Why did we ever have to leave? / Little league Shig’s chapter is basically him reflecting on his childhood in Japantown as he prepares to leave it and I think this song is perfect for that! There’s also the line “Do you remember days on our old block?/ Messin' with our neighbors who called the cops” which is SO Shig&Twitchy-core… them and their shenanigans!!
III. Yum-yum Oishi - You Are Loved - Defiance, Ohio And as the story unfolds over time / Things we once knew, they do dissolve into the sky / She swears she sees a brand new constellation / Every time somebody we know dies I love the bit in Yum-yum’s chapter where Tommy and Minnow are making up constellations and I have always associated Yum-yum with astral imagery because of it! I think this song really speaks to her unsurety about the future and I love the line “the radio plays a familiar song,” because Yumyum’s chapter is also where we get the first reference to Mas’ Silvertone radio!
IV. Bette Nakano - Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying - Sabrina Carpenter 'Cause I'm young and I'm dumb / I do stupid things when it comes to love / And even if I always end up crying / No, you can't blame a girl for trying I feel like I don’t even have to explain this one like this encapsulates Bette’s vibe EXACTLY!!! She would be such a teen pop girlie <3
V. Frankie Fujita - Amy aka Spent Gladiator 1 - The Mountain Goats Play with matches if you think you need to play with matches / Seek out the hidden places where the fire burns hot and bright / Find where the heat's unbearable and stay there if you have to / Don't hurt anybody on your way up to the light Thinking about this song as a Frankie song makes me FERAL!! something about the fire in this verse as a metaphor for his anger, him knowing he needs to do whatever he can to make sure he doesn’t hurt anybody with that anger… the first line of this song is “Do every stupid thing that makes you feel alive”...yeah. i luv you frankie fujita <3
VI. Stan Katsumoto - Once More with Feeling - Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. Don't let the people make you think / That just because you're young you're useless / You know it's not naive to think that you can change the things around / And that no man is an island This is mostly in reference to Stan wanting to go to college to be a lawyer for the ACLU which is a piece of his character that I absolutely LOVE!!
VII. Aiko Harano - Warrior Girl - Nicole Visco Warrior Girl only goes to where she wants to / Warrior Girl maybe has a heavy sword / Warrior Girl has no idea where she jumps to / But she jumps to where she wants to / And she's never ever bored This is absolutely Aiko’s song!!! She is a scrappy little warrior girl and I adore her for it!! There is also a refrain in this song about “maybe someday / there'll be some way I could get to roam free” which. yeah. I love you Aiko <3
VIII. Yuki Nakano - Crazy Dreams - Carrie Underwood Here's to you free souls, you firefly chasers / Tree climbers, porch swingers, air guitar players / Here's to you fearless dancers, shaking walls in your bedrooms / There's a lot of wonder left inside of me and you / Thank God even crazy dreams come true This just reminds me a lot of Yuki’s dream of playing in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League!! especially because there’s a part of the song that says “Never let a bad day be enough / To go and talk you into giving up” which reminds me so much of Yuki’s chapter!!
IX. Mary Katsumoto - Something About Lemons - Chumped And every day, I grow a little more resentful / Of the choices that I did or didn't make / Wanted this to feel a little more eventful / Every day that I'm awake just feels the same This is SO Mary!! especially the line about being resentful of the choices that she didn’t (get to) make… like that’s literally the plot of her chapter.
X. Kiyoshi Tani - Lion’s Teeth - The Mountain Goats And my arms get sore / And my palms start to sweat / And the tears roll down my face / Till my cheeks are hot and red and soaking wet John Darnielle called this song a “revenge fantasy” about standing up to his abusive stepfather and I think that Kiyoshi deserves that kind of catharsis.
XI. Mas Ito - human - Christina Perri But I'm only human / And I bleed when I fall down / I'm only human / And I crash and I break down Song about pretending to be strong and fake a smile and force a laugh until you literally can’t anymore and it fucking destroys you… hello Mas Ito!!
XII. Keiko Kimura - Who Knew - P!nk That last kiss, I'll cherish until we meet again / And time makes it harder, I wish I could remember / But I keep your memory, you visit me in my sleep / My darling, who knew? Fucked up behavior of me to choose this for Keiko but yeah it’s about Twitchy. Feels self-explanatory.
XIII. Twitchy Hashimoto - Brother - Kodaline We've taken different paths / And traveled different roads / I know we'll always end up on the same one when we're old / And when you're in the trenches / And you're under fire, I will cover you Very much chosen with the Twitchy&Shig dynamic in mind but also because Twitchy literally refers to the other characters as his “siblings back in Topaz”... and something about the line about “we were… the kings and queens” combined with the motif of royalty surrounding Twitchy & his relationship with Keiko (“company of kings,” Aiko’s thought about Twitchy treating Keiko like a “queen,” Keiko’s comparing Twitchy to a prince, the Cinderella motifs in Keiko’s chapter…. yeah) and ofc the reference to trench warfare… this is his fucking song.
XIV. Tommy Harano - Landslide - Fleetwood Mac Well, I've been afraid of changin' / 'Cause I've built my life around you / But time makes you bolder / Even children get older / And I'm getting older too something about Tommy finally making the decision to leave his parents behind… he’s built his life around a family that doesn’t treat him right but time has made him bolder as he’s grown up. and like. the references to snow in both the book and the song are beautiful and aplenty but i don’t have the time to unpack that.
XV. All Of Us - Disposable Youth - No-No Boy Disposable you / Disposable me / Disposable hearts / Indestructible teens Off an album named for the year the Japanese American incarceration of World War II began, this is songwriter Julian Saporiti’s “imagining of what it would have been like to be ever experience a Memorial Day bbq with people who looked like me” and has a very similar vibe to the scene at Tanforan where they celebrate of the infield after the Americans defeated the Japanese at the Battle of Midway. somethin’ bout teenagers getting to be wild and loving and free <3

Before I can say anything else, Bette calls him over. She’s corralling the guys off to one side so she can take a photo with the camera she ordered back in February. Frankie glares at her. Stan Katsumoto’s wearing a smirk like it’s an old comfortable jacket. Mas stands at the center of them all, beaming, with each of his brothers under one arm. Shig’s laughing, but if you’re paying attention, you can see he’s gripping Mas so tight, it’s like he doesn’t ever want to let go. Minnow’s hand is out, trying to pass a folded piece of paper to Twitchy, who’s pulling faces at the camera.
Tommy’s in the foreground, smiling like he never smiles when he’s with the family, because here, no one expects him to be something he isn’t. Here, he’s accepted just as he is.
Just as we all are.
hey we are not free nation come get your juice!! traci chee commented AND reposted this on instagram so legally you have to reblog it!!
