Video credit: @fatimabanawi @jeddah_cm #death #2017highlight (at Saudi Art Council)

31.12.17 | A little over a month ago I dove headfirst into an experience that forced me to be vulnerable. I bared my soul for 25 minutes publicly in front of a crowd and shared a short story about my formal relationship with death. Talking about the different shades of death at @jeddah_cm was equally exciting and scary to do. Sharing a personal struggle in surviving not one, nor two, but multiple tragedies in the hopes that someone will relate and find comfort in the fact that they are not alone is terrifying. But I did it. And it was liberating. Expanding the boundaries of preexisting definitions and finding a new meaning to death takes away its power. It doesn’t mean it’s not scary. It doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt when it happens. But it helps you heal faster and find a purpose to the life you are given and still have. I don’t have it all figured out. I’d be a hypocrite if I claimed so. But I’d like us to start writing our own anthropology, one that will talk about us, a narrative shaped day by day as we interact with the space and time we occupy. A project forever prolonged in the infinite, even after our passing. #Jeddah_CM #Death #2017highlight

24.12.17 | This project seeks to empower the ever-present voices of people whose experiences have been defined by their intersecting identities. Belonging to two worlds without being either one or the other, these narratives are simultaneously both negative vis-à-vis the formation of social classifications and hierarchies, and overwhelmingly positive to those searching for human connection. The chronicles of this continuous experience are a source of comfort and a universal affirmation that we are all humans trying to make sense of who we are; a patchwork of blurred concepts and particles in the biosphere of a grand canvas. If you are an immigrant, a descendent of an immigrant, or was forced to leave your country for any reason, please send me an email. I would love nothing more than to hear your story.

24.12.17 | The broad spectrum of experiences, origins, and narratives brought by different immigrants into any specific region results in the interaction of their cultures and identities in a way where all cultures are involved in one another. This leads to the fact that to some extent, we have all come from somewhere and ended up somewhere else, we are all a part of each other’s diverse narratives, and therefore we are all immigrants. … to be continued on the next post. #weareallimmigrants

24.12.17 | Immigration is a phenomenon as old as the existence of humanity. It is deep-rooted in our history, dating back to the earliest human records. People have always relocated in search of better work, life, and social circumstances. Monolithic factors like the environment, economy, and political instability continuously consolidate such a phenomenon, always driving individuals to move in the hope of finding something better, something different, and other possible worlds and realities for themselves and their families. … to be continued on the next post. #weareallimmigrants

28.11.17 | Chronicles of an Immigrant - Mixed Media / 2017 Belonging to two worlds without being either one or the other, an immigrant’s experience has been defined by their intersecting identities. Several factors consolidated the mixture of cultures and identities in a way where all cultures are involved in one another. The attempt to bring these groups to a middle ground through the shared history of immigration is at the heart of this project. In Edward Saeed’s words, “No one today is purely one thing. Labels like Indian, or woman, or Muslim, or American are not more than starting-points, which if followed into actual experience for only a moment are quickly left behind.” To know more, keep an eye out! #soon #thoughtprocess #sketchingwithwords #newartwork #weareallimmigrants #alittlebitofanthropology

28.11.17 | Chronicles of an Immigrant - Mixed Media / 2017 Immigration is inherent in the history of mankind. We have all come from somewhere and ended up somewhere else. The premise of Chronicles of an Immigrant originated even before I was born. My forever muse, my late grandfather, relocated to Makkah when he was 17 years old seeking knowledge that he could not find in his hometown. He was a scholar, an astronomer, a poet and as cliche as it may sound, a forever student in the school of life. The legacy he left behind, from his mundane journals to astronomy observations and analysis, inspires me tremendously and has a strong influence on my work. How can one person that existed in his humble bubble have such impact 30 years after his death? Yet, during his lifetime, he never claimed to be of any significance in a very modest way. His signature on his books was always: الحقير الفقير إلى مولاه القدير حسب الله بن حسن بن عبدالله غفرهم الله بوقس His story of hijra and the struggle to embrace the paradox of identity that reflected his complicated reality is the subject matter and the little narrative that I attempted to depict in this series of work that will be showcased soon. … to be continued! #thoughtprocess #sketchingwithwords #newartwork #weareallimmigrants #alittlebitofanthropology
