I noticed something while rewatching the TV series. Trowa Barton has surprisingly few shots of his back. It’s as if he said, “You can stand behind me, but I won’t guarantee your safety,” when I was trying to decide the camera angles from behind in storyboards and animations. His back was full of tension, and he was rejecting others. It’s a strange feeling that I believed even though it wasn't shown.

Trowa is full of kindness and strength at heart, even as he calmly walks a dangerous tightrope that borders on madness.

I think this is the achievement of Mr. Shigeru Nakahara, who played the role. Mr. Nakahara is a modest and soft-spoken gentleman. Somewhere in the voice that plays cooly, you can feel the positive sincerity.

After the dubbing of episode 35, I was able to join him at a drinking party, and Mr. Nakahara, who acted so calmly, said, “I’m glad I was able to return. I was relieved because I thought Trowa was dead in episode 25.”

I remember being quite surprised when I saw the difference between them as he spoke with a big smile on his face.

At that time, one of the actors, Mr. Ryuuzou Ishino, said “But the episode title ‘The Return of Wufei’ is funny, isn’t it? He’s a regular so I wouldn’t put ‘return’,” because he had said he believed it would be an inconvenience, so I tried not to make eye contact.

Actually, Mr. Ishino didn’t have more than ten moments on set.

TL Notes:

箱庭 is a miniature garden, but can also refer to a sandbox. I’m interpreting this line as ??? talking about Nijigao City being a test ground of sorts, so “sandbox” felt more appropriate. The context is also unclear, so they could very well be talking about the Riders (hence why I used “they” in this TL) or just everyone in general, so it would be more of a “we”.

衰退 is “decline” or “decay”, but “ruin” sounded better considering the structure I used. I also went for “will only know” to TL あるのみ (”there’s only”) for the sake of sentence flow.

speaking of seiyuu we need more sengoku basara if only so i can hear shigeru nakahara and ryuuzou ishino in SOMETHING again. and i'm not ready yet to commit to gundam wing

oh for sure! also sorry if i came off like i was talking to/about you here at all, definitely wasn’t my intent. 💕

basically: the english dub of the show came out during the height of the “when we make this dub we need to remember all anime is actually for children and also we can’t say the word kill on tv” times. lots of very weasel-y stuff was done with translation and transliteration to “soften” characters, storylines, and line deliveries. add to this that whoever directed the cast for the gw dub did a really awful job getting good performances out of usually very excellent actors (kirby morrow, who played dub trowa, is a notable exception in that his performance and even his tone match shigeru nakahara’s (trowa’s japanese actor.) others are total tonal mismatches at best (poor relena’s english voice actress is trying her best i think but her performance ends up very “whiny” and weird in places, where relena originally is very demure and soft spoken etc. it very obviously informed how her character was originally received in english, and it was nasty. she’s this lovely mature brave young ladylike girl who does a lot of growing over the show’s length and it makes me so sad that so many people don’t get to experience her “true” character!)

then there’s duo. the dub team clearly at some point designated duo the “funny” one, which he definitely is, especially when heero’s being insane. but they also saddled him with this “TOTALLY RADICAL BRO” voice to begin with, and then they worked very hard to make sure that “i’m the party pizza turtle of the ninja turtles” aura was kept up. and this episode is (for me) the pinnacle of duo’s character changes.

so the part where heero reaches him in the cell to mill him so he won’t talk - delicious food for all 1x2 shippers. it’s a definite “moment” in their relationship and a huge character growth moment for heero! and in english, it goes essentially:

heero: opens cell door, his gun aimed. duo sees him, is like “oh good you’re here, do the thing.” heero raises the gun, and duo says, in a frightened and disbelieving voice, “you’re actually going to kill me?!” and heero clearly decides no, he isn’t, and instead breaks duo out. great!

except in japanese, duo stands up and closes his eyes and says basically the same thing at first (“go ahead and do it.”) then he opens his eyes again and, which a totally calm expression, asks heero if he’s really going to do it, in a tone that says heero is wasting his time and should genuinely kill him already. must emphasize how totally unafraid he is, staring down heero’s gun, and how his tone and word choice say, “jesus christ i thought i was finally going to die and now you’re letting me down.” he wants heero to kill him. he’s not scared or in disbelief: he’s let down. are you really going to do this or what? chop chop, wrench leg boy.

so it makes heero’s choice more interesting duo’s character a lot darker. heero is actively refusing to put a fellow out of his misery, and we understand that duo is actively suicidal and doesn’t even want to be here in the first place (which is true as, like heero, duo was forcibly trained and was going to be deployed more or less against his will. he still kind of… was, but he made “the best” of it, if “raining pain and destruction on bad people” is “the best of it.”)

there are a lot of points with duo with similar issues, where his tone is changed or word choices are made in english that weren’t equivalently made in japanese, but none of them are as glaring as that episode. he’s still a smirky little badass, but he’s not a TOTALLY TUBULAR DUUUUDE, he’s a manic little suicidal mess of a fifteen year old whose total resignation to the bloody and painful end to this makes heero go, “nuh uh. we’re both getting out.” iirc there’s at least one scene where duo says something self destructive that other characters stare at him like he’s insane (HE IS, HE’S MORE FEEAL THAN HEERO IN SOME WAYS) but it was changed to him saying something awkward or dumb something. one day i’ll go through and make a list, i swear.

anyway that’s the story! duo isn’t really the comic relief character, there isn’t actually one in gw i’d say. and he wants to die so bad in that episode that it makes heero decide he’s going to force duo to live. way better for that ship, imo.

Tattoo Analysis: Nakahara Shigeru

I'm going to start with one of MY favorite tattoos in the series: Guardian of the home, protector against disaster, and mighty bull-flipper himself —Nakahara! 

(Tattoo Breakdown)

Despite his outward appearance of a bit of a grumpy, tough old coot, Nakahara has a hibiscus-soft gentle side when it comes to his adopted daughter Saki. Much like Kiryu, this hard-as-nails Yakuza boss just wants to be a good father figure. His main character arch is learning that his life in the crime syndicate does not hinder his ability to be a kind, patient, and loving father. 

Hibiscus also are a gift given as a show of hospitality to visitors, and Nakahara exhibits this in spades as he welcomes Kiryu in his family (whether Kiryu likes it or not) Blue is also a calm color that symbolizes stability and passivity. While Nakahara is not a true pacifist, he is slow to anger and only raises hell when there is a threat to his family.

The Shisa is a Okanawan version of the komainu, (Shishi aka "lion dogs")The name "Shisa" is a shortening of "Shishi-san" (Mr. Lion) and that is adorable. Feels similar to the reveal of Saki’s drawing of her dad, showing us (and Nakahara) that she sees him as a cheerful, friendly dad who has done everything in his power to keep her safe.

*Not really related, but please, please look up "hajime komainu" (first komainu) you will not regret it. They're the earliest attempts at carving a komainu by people of Japan. They look like an artist's attempt to recreate something they have only had loosely described to them, and they are all very good boys.
