Frozen Teardrop Translations
Frozen Teardrop Volume Six Author’s Note Translation.
Translation start-
Afterword
I noticed something while rewatching the TV series. Trowa Barton has surprisingly few shots of his back. It’s as if he said, “You can stand behind me, but I won’t guarantee your safety,” when I was trying to decide the camera angles from behind in storyboards and animations. His back was full of tension, and he was rejecting others. It’s a strange feeling that I believed even though it wasn't shown.
Trowa is full of kindness and strength at heart, even as he calmly walks a dangerous tightrope that borders on madness.
I think this is the achievement of Mr. Shigeru Nakahara, who played the role. Mr. Nakahara is a modest and soft-spoken gentleman. Somewhere in the voice that plays cooly, you can feel the positive sincerity.
After the dubbing of episode 35, I was able to join him at a drinking party, and Mr. Nakahara, who acted so calmly, said, “I’m glad I was able to return. I was relieved because I thought Trowa was dead in episode 25.”
I remember being quite surprised when I saw the difference between them as he spoke with a big smile on his face.
At that time, one of the actors, Mr. Ryuuzou Ishino, said “But the episode title ‘The Return of Wufei’ is funny, isn’t it? He’s a regular so I wouldn’t put ‘return’,” because he had said he believed it would be an inconvenience, so I tried not to make eye contact.
Actually, Mr. Ishino didn’t have more than ten moments on set.
Continued in the afterword of volume 7.

The worst part of Throw M. Away’s channel being deleted is that the only uploads of OSTs are from my ex.
Like obviously I don’t want to give him views because he’s a literal pedo, but he also because his uploads just aren’t very good. A lot of them are extended and have the Movie Maker glitch.
I haven’t really had it in me as of late to upload the OSTs myself because I feel like it’d be petty of me to do so.
#cece.txt#AliceSoft#I mean I guess I did upload that one character song from Shigeru Nakahara#that he uploaded before#tbh was kinda fun doing that#since he hated DB#and I used a pic of 17 for it lol

???, the Mask of Ambition (CV: Nakahara Shigeru)
"After all, they're in the middle of our sandbox."[1]
A person shrouded in mystery.
Profile
Affiliation: Chaosism, Ulseven
Height: 170cm
Jurisdiction: ???
Voice Lines
“After all, they’re in the middle of our sandbox.”
“Organizations with no ambition will only know ruin.”[2]
TL Notes:
箱庭 is a miniature garden, but can also refer to a sandbox. I’m interpreting this line as ??? talking about Nijigao City being a test ground of sorts, so “sandbox” felt more appropriate. The context is also unclear, so they could very well be talking about the Riders (hence why I used “they” in this TL) or just everyone in general, so it would be more of a “we”.
衰退 is “decline” or “decay”, but “ruin” sounded better considering the structure I used. I also went for “will only know” to TL あるのみ (”there’s only”) for the sake of sentence flow.

I was surprised by your reply at first because I was sure sub Trowa was softer than dub Trowa. But after checking (and having a laughing fit at "Hildy"; goodness, I had forgotten that one), it turns out you are right. Nakahara Shigeru makes him sound more flat and controlled, adding a generous serving of snark when he is in OZ company, and only going fully emotional to outright dramatic when Trowa has amnesia. Kirby Morrow varies a lot more throughout the whole show, so that difference isn't there, making dub Trowa by default softer when he speaks to Heero for example.
I can live with both choices but I get why the Japanese original has him sound colder and more stoic, to use your words. It ties in with Trowa having buried his emotions as a former mercenary, so it makes sense he emotes a lot more when he has amnesia and doesn't remember that traumatizing part of his life. And it's that massive change in cadence that clues in Quatre with just a single word that Trowa got his memories back. Because he starts speaking in that controlled manner again.
I guess you could say that the English dub switched Heero's and Trowa's speech patterns around. Dub Noin sounds almost bored and condescending in scenes the original is highly emotional and concerned. It's kinda funny. And bearable once you put it on x1.1 speed because that slooooow maaaaanner oooof speaaaaaking to fit the mouth flaps the English dub drives me insane.
Gundam Wing in German has a more liberal dub. German dub Trowa sounds snarky 24/7, even if he's not trying to be, and Duo calls OZ asshats at one point, haha. Definitely bottom of my list for German dubs, but it has a few gems. Noin and Zechs also only ever refer to each other in polite forms. It gets ridiculous by Endless Waltz.
Makes me wonder if the French version had them use vous instead of tu, too.
Hi! How did you learn to read Japanese? If I'm not wrong that you do, is the Japanese depiction of the GW characters' personalities different from their Western depictions?
Hey! Learning how to read Japanese is definitely an adventure in and of itself. For me, I had learned how to read and write hiragana and katakana from the Yoshida Institute’s site long before smartphones existed, along with a few kanji. I would use hiragana for my cheat sheets at school. (Yes, I learned a whole different alphabet just to cheat at history and geography instead of simply studying for my exams like a sensible person, even though I realized it was way more effort. I'm not exactly smart.) I started learning kanji properly years later with the kanji learning app Japanese Kanji Study, which I can't recommend enough, then took a brief language course and then accidentally ended up studying Japanese in college for 1.5 years, which is where I learned all my beginner's grammar (みんなの日本語 anyone?) and, as is totally apt for a beginner, hentaigana.
It’s funny when you can't string five sentences together without issue, but can make out Nobunaga's scribbling, something many natives are incapable of. Great, balanced education you thought up there, folks.
At least I got a laugh out of one Ranma ½ episode where Ranma found Kuno’s journal entry and couldn’t read it because of course that doofus would write it in the most archaic manner possible.
Anyway, as far as reading aids go, I’m just gonna plug everything I’ve used over the years for anyone interested. The Firefox extension 10ten reader has been a lifesaver, as has been Jisho. When it comes to comprehension, Google translate is dog crap. I’d recommend Papago, which must have been trained specifically on East Asian languages as the results are much better. Not perfect, but better in my experience. Google translate has long incorporated OCR (image to text) so it may be less useful, but I’m very fond of the no-install Capture2Text which can convert manga speech bubbles to text, provided the scans are clean enough to read the kanji.
For grammar, I stuck to Minna No Nihongo. Bought all the books and slowly work through the lessons now.
The most valuable asset though is having a fluent or native speaker you can ask. Nuance is impossible to grasp if no one explains it to you. Even with vocab, you’ll run into plenty of words with the same meaning. Dictionaries often don’t distinguish in those cases. Having someone you can ask makes learning a lot easier.
Now for the Gundam Wing part of your question.
I’m not exactly sure what you mean by Japanese and Western depictions, or rather who you mean. If we’re talking official sub vs. dub then yes, there are a few differences. Heero isn’t perpetually constipated in the original (he actually has a sense of humor!) and Duo is a lot less flirty than his dub version. But it’s nothing grave. Certainly not Seto Kaiba levels of the dub rewriting his character to make him rant about not believing in destiny every time he opens his mouth.
Or Saber Rider being the leader of the Star Sheriffs. wtf I grew up with a lie D:<
Now, if you’re referring to fandom spaces, I am, without a doubt, the wrongest person to ask as I have never seen what the Japanese Wing fandom is up to and have never really been in touch with what the West is doing either. Have I seen fanfics and do I know 1x2 is the most popular ship? Yes. Have I spent 10 minutes looking at a manga panel, trying to figure out what is going on, only to hit the back button as fast as I could once I did? To the detriment of my poor eyes, yes. But when it comes to fandom differences, I think @muwi-translates could give you a proper answer. I can’t really say much as I’m not involved in the fandom in a way that lets me know such things.
I just sit here in my bubble, talking to myself most of the time.
#gundam wing#sub vs dub#Scott McNeil does a good job of preserving Duo's speech pattern#and then you have Dermail and General Septem who make my ears bleed

Tattoo Analysis: Nakahara Shigeru
I'm going to start with one of MY favorite tattoos in the series: Guardian of the home, protector against disaster, and mighty bull-flipper himself —Nakahara!
(Tattoo Breakdown)
Despite his outward appearance of a bit of a grumpy, tough old coot, Nakahara has a hibiscus-soft gentle side when it comes to his adopted daughter Saki. Much like Kiryu, this hard-as-nails Yakuza boss just wants to be a good father figure. His main character arch is learning that his life in the crime syndicate does not hinder his ability to be a kind, patient, and loving father.
Hibiscus also are a gift given as a show of hospitality to visitors, and Nakahara exhibits this in spades as he welcomes Kiryu in his family (whether Kiryu likes it or not) Blue is also a calm color that symbolizes stability and passivity. While Nakahara is not a true pacifist, he is slow to anger and only raises hell when there is a threat to his family.
The Shisa is a Okanawan version of the komainu, (Shishi aka "lion dogs")The name "Shisa" is a shortening of "Shishi-san" (Mr. Lion) and that is adorable. Feels similar to the reveal of Saki’s drawing of her dad, showing us (and Nakahara) that she sees him as a cheerful, friendly dad who has done everything in his power to keep her safe.
*Not really related, but please, please look up "hajime komainu" (first komainu) you will not regret it. They're the earliest attempts at carving a komainu by people of Japan. They look like an artist's attempt to recreate something they have only had loosely described to them, and they are all very good boys.

Yakuza games kanji info 11
Shigeru Nakahara (名嘉原 茂, Nakahara Shigeru)
A kind man and loving father with immense strength.
名 na = name, noted, distinguished, reputation
嘉 ka = applaud, praise, esteem, happy, auspicious
原 hara = meadow, original, primitive, field, plain, prairie, tundra, wilderness
茂 shigeru = overgrown, grow thick, be luxuriant
- About his family name: I’ll start by mentioning that Okinawa has original family names that aren’t usually found in other parts of Japan. Having one of those family names usually indicates that a person is from Okinawa or has okinawan ancestors (most of the okinawan characters in Y3 seem to have local names). Nakahara is one of those family names, and the man himself explains he was born and raised in Okinawa.
You can read a bit more about Okinawa’s family names here: https://japanese-names.info/column/most-common-okinawa-family-names/
The full list the article mentions is: https://myoji-yurai.net/columnOkinawa.htm
Nakahara is not on that list but you can see more about it here: https://myoji-yurai.net/searchResult.htm?myojiKanji=%E5%90%8D%E5%98%89%E5%8E%9F
Nakahara and the Ryudo family are very respected by the local community. They are treated like normal, friendly neighbors everyone knows rather than the intimidating, dangerous men you’d imagine a yakuza to be. Nakahara, as the landlord of Morning Glory, at first intended to sell the land for profit, but eventually decided not to do it and even put his own life in danger to protect the orphanage. He shows his softer side with the kids, especially with his adopted daughter Saki, who adores the kind man that’s been taking care of her.
- About his given name: I interpret ‘overgrown’ here in the sense of physical strength. Nakahara is a bulky man in his 60′s who’s capable of wrestling a bull (and tossing it aside) while he’s still recovering from a gunshot wound. Hearing Saki speak for the first time and calling him ‘dad‘ gave him a massive boost of energy and morale to fight all four bulls on his own until Kiryu joins him.
Extra - Here are some characters with the same kanji and the same pronunciation:
(原 hara) 釘原 広志, Kugihara Hiroshi
(原 hara) 笠原 清美, Kasahara Kiyomi
Extra 2 - And here are some characters with the same kanji and different pronunciations
(原 wara) 小笠原 肇, Ogasawara Hajime
(茂 shige) 馬場 茂樹, Baba Shigeki
