I’m listening now to the Wisdom Saga. Think Telemachus being part water nymph might be an advantage to him during his first(?) sea voyage to find his dad 😉. Maybe he knows some friendly water nymphs who can help ensure a safe sea voyage. Or maybe he’s a really strong swimmer and the least likely to drown if he falls overboard. Or maybe he swims fast enough to quickly rescue anyone who falls overboard. And adding to your idea of him eating fish whole: maybe he can catch and eat whole fish raw, so he’s the least likely to starve at sea!
Yes and no, in a way?
Naiadborn (freshwater) ARE still with an advantage even at sea BECAUSE of all you mentioned. Also would have SOME (I do mean some) manipulation of saltwater surrounding the boat.
BUT being freshwater, being in the sea/saltwater long would be really really bad for them. Just like real freshwater fish. (Best case scenario is if they have a raft/surfboard and never have to touch the saltwater)
This gal kind of explains it but if freshwater fish are in salt water too long, they can't really filter the salt and so it dehydrates their cells and then they will die.
youtube
The same would happen with saltwater fish in fresh water in a way, but instead, their cells basically get too engorged and then that's how they would die. (Why Achilles is really uncomfortable during freshwater baths :'( he feels sick/"bloated" afterward)
I guess you could say I want there to be a "power limit" or at least some difference between the different types of Water nymphs. As then, they would kind of be mini Poseidons/Gods/Goddesses (rule over basically all water).
So Naiadborn (depending on how much naiad blood they have in them. Telemachus would probably handle being in the seawater longer than Penelope because he has more mortal blood in him (37.5% Naiad, Penelope is 75%)) would need to have areas where they can soak themselves in freshwater for their scales while at sea.
BUT Naiadborns CAN gather seawater and basically filtrate it enough so they never run out of drinking/soaking water.
If Penelope were to say, leap into the sea as she sees Telemachus'/Odysseus' ship returning so then she can see them right away, she'll be uncomfortable and will need to soak in freshwater for a while as soon as she can, but she still can do that.
Nereids COULD possibly see a naiadborn on boats/in the water and then help them out if they see their cause and/or Poseidon is not angry. BUT there's also only 50 of them and they can't possibly be everywhere at once along with their usually duties/daily lives
I'm still working out some things with how my nymph lore works but that's some of the basics :)

penelope canonically retreating to her room and refusing food = she puts on some weight, the reason being both lack of physical activity as well as her body being on constant emergency mode (so what little she does eat ends up being stored away bc the body doesnt know when the 'starvation' will end). whats more her constant stress elevates cortisol levels which in and of itself leads to weight gain esp in the abdominal area.
tl;dr chubby penelope send fucking t w e e t
#that is it that is the post#cortisol is also known as the stress hormone#helps u wake up & regulates metabolism among other things#it helps you cope with stress but too much of it (much like anything else in life) is not good for you and your health#this has been on my mind for so long#no im not projecting#shush#thinking abt her naiad heritage too#like maybe she can get through long periods without or with very little food but her human body's nutritional needs prevail idk#and then midnight snacks maybe lol#away from the piercing gaze of the wretched suitors and judgemental looks of certain maidservants#chubby penelope for the soul#penelope of ithaca#my beloved muffin#with razor sharp teef#give the cinammon roll some tummy rolls!!#BONUS: when ody comes home they both heal together and side by side#coming to terms with just how merciless the years have been#ody gains healthy weight after years of abuse in ogygia (i hc he purposely denied himself proper food bc thats the only agency he had#as well as the making urself undesirable to the abuser)#and penelope goes for swims and perhaps bonds with telemachus in a new way like races and swimming competitions aw#as well as teaching him some naiad stuff he probably inherited#family healing yay!#:')#btw not saying they go back to their 20 year old physiques#what i am saying is they now take better care of themselves and each other#and one of the ways its reflected is in their frames#i think we need more middle aged odypen art#and age accurate content in general#esp post odyssey

Warrior Penelope stuff cause I've been listening to too many EPIC genderbent covers, and I wanted to give my take on it (also cuz I kinda want to draw it one day)
- Ares as Penelope's patron, absolutely! But Ares didn't have a huge cult in Sparta, although he wasn't hated. So my lore take version thing is that ATHENA wanted to be Penelope's patron (she had already an eye on Ody kinda) but Ares saw his chance, got to it first and became attached to Penelope without wanting to admit it, also because she saw the good and useful in him. Athena still watches over Penelope (especially after her and Ares platonically break up, which she finds really stupid) and is the one who does her best to protect Ithaca while she's gone. She's by Ody's side while he misses his wife and is mostly the reason why the Suitors hadn't taken over yet.
- To get Ares to realize his mistake, Athena tricks him into helping Telemachus defeat Antinous in Little Wolf because free bloodshed, only to end up sensitized by Telemachus because holy shit, my friend's son is here almost dying to this ASSHOLE who thinks he's so much stronger than MY friend the queen and even me like who tf does he think he is. Athena makes Ares fucking rational for once. And maybe even Aphrodite, as well, gets some damn sense in his mind like "they love each other like you and I and my girl is doing her best to get home you're going to apologize rn"
- ctimene holds a claymore double her height with no problems
- penelope is more "cold ruthless" than Odysseus, in a way that she's still poised (until the end or when she's really brought to her knees which is disturbing) while doing merciless stuff. She's emotionless a lot more (just on the surface)
- Ares was the one to give Penelope the idea of going to war instead of Odysseus, for obvious reasons. And Pen is really a mastermind among the Greeks ofc
- Ares and Pen fought in their My Goodbye version because she "held back her power while her friends got devoured" "she didn't even fight Polyphemus, didn't even TRY to kill him" "hid behind her wits to get things done". Because when fighting Polyphemus, she knew that if she tried to kill Polyphemus while he was asleep, they'd be stuck in that cave forever (like in the real Odyssey). And knew that fighting while her friends got killed would slow them down and probably get more people dead. And when they ran away, she didn't go back to kill the Cyclops even if she could've because of yes, mercy, but also because she would've awakened all the other Cyclops and sailing away was faster, better. Ares deemed this cowardice. Crazy thing, since one of the most important things to him is courage.
- Ares overstimates Penelope's power. Like, yes, she's exceptional, but still HUMAN. With her limits. He hasn't dealt with a human personally in years so he doesn't understand this, so his expectations are ridiculously high, which ends up breaking Penelope.
- During 600 strike, Penelope can actually breathe underwater and not hold her breath for such a long time and be fine because she's half naiad (yes, they are fresh water nymphs but still). Also this may make her even stronger around water (to a certain degree, she's still very mortal)
- calypso is pansexual
this is already a lot, ill add more when i think about it lol (also if i realize any of these ideas don't make sense)

“I wonder if he's got any latent naiad traits from Penelope” may I present Odysseus ‘you could not get me back on a boat because Poseidon hates me’ and his son Telemachus ‘I have naiad blood so all the children of Poseidon just think I’m Neat™️.’
They go over to visit Menelaus one day just to let him know like hey! Your ole pal from the war is back and alive! Yippee!! And Telemachus is having the time of his life and odysseus is shitting and crying by the prow

Since Odysseus is into carpentry, Penelope is into weaving, what do you think Telemachus' art thing will be?

here he asked for his favourite story of his father... how he won her heart :')

Favorite character from Greek mythology + favorite myth from Greek mythology?
Favorite characters
I'll turn this into a tag game : @margaretkart @dootznbootz @sarafangirlart @aliciavance4228 @katerinaaqu @hermesmoly @go-rocksquadsfan @sanska @vint-knight .
And @anon (you can give your answer in another ask 😉).
So, I have a loooooooot of faves. This list is long.
Here are mine :
Nobody. Yeah, in reality, I hate mythology and just pretend I like it. Or I just love making puns about my favorite lying war criminal. Who didn't cheat btw.
Penelope. These two are soulmates, no ifs or buts. I always found her underrated and @dootznbootz 's ramblings on her confirm that. Cunning and sassy half-naiad queen.
"The delian twins", as I like to call them. Idk I really love their multifaceted natures of protectors and deadly huntress/inflictor of illnesses (with an affinity towards plague). And their familial bond is precious. And I like them both equally, even though I talk about Apollo a bit more ig.
Leto. She's precious. They're always ready to defend each other. Like when Apollo and Artemis killed Niobe's kids because she was disrespectful to Leto. Or when Leto came in to save her son from being thrown in Tartarus by Zeus. Or when baby Artemis helped her mother deliver her brother. She fought for her children and now they fight for her.
Hestia. Too bad there isn't more about her because I relate a lot to the concept of chilling at home and staying away from drama.
Ariadne. Because of her family's tragic history, her healing from it with Dionysus (in most versions) and overall, she's great. Also, it's funny how Theseus wanted to marry a child of Zeus but his ex girlfriend actually succeeded 😂. Speaking of her family tragedy...
Asterius. I bet most adaptation authors don't know who I am referring to 🤣. He's a man-eating monster, yes, but he grew up isolated, trapped and unloved. I feel so bad for him.
Perseus. The GOAT. Partly thanks to @sarafangirlart. I already liked him since I always knew he wanted to save his mother, but he genuinely grew on me since I read her posts. That and when I learned of his war against Dionysus. Extremely underrated story.
Athena. Idk I don't think I need to elaborate on why she's cool.
Hades. In retellings, I often hate him because he's either woobified or made into "Greek Satan" (at least in Disney he's fun), but he's genuinely cool in mythology. Morally gray Hades save me.
Hermes. From birth, he was always a little trickster. I love how many functions he has (messenger of the gods, god of merchants, thieves, communication, also a psychopomp btw). A very energetic and helpful god.
Asclepius. I think I should make a post explaining why he's great because, yeah, I don't talk much about him even though there are things to say (yeah it's because I did a lot of research on him).
And... finally... Dionysus 🤣. Of course he made it in this list. I dedicated a whole essay series about this god, come on !
Honorable mentions : Hector, Andromache, Menelaus, Demeter, Telemachus, Hephaestus, Hippolytus, Danae, Ares and many others.
Favorite myths/plays/poems
I already answered that but can't find the post. So I'll do it again, with some new answers in mind. Basically "the myths with the characters on the list".
It's either because they're that compelling or just hilarious.
The homeric cycle. Ok, an easy one.
The Bacchae by Euripides (mandatory reading if you want to understand Dionysus imo. No excuses).
The frogs by Aristophanes. Because it's funny.
Asclepius' story. Seriously I'll elaborate on it one day.
Hermes' birth story. Him stealing Apollo's cows and Apollo getting mad at his scallywag of a brother 🤣🤣. And then just him winning Apollo over with the lyre.
Pirithous and Theseus getting their asses stuck on a chair (yes this is my title for this story). I love to mock these two, especially Pirithous because... give this man a Darwin award please. No thoughts and no survival instincts in his brain 😂.
Orpheus and Eurydice. Simple but powerful.
The Argonautica. Aka a huge crossover. Seeing more interactions between all these heroes would be awesome (especially if we take every version into account 👀. So many faces...). It's funny how I love the Argonautica but never talk about Jason himself 🤣🤣. The embodiment of the protagonist who's less interesting than the other characters.
Perseus' war against Dionysus. A potential retelling about this myth would go so hard !! Especially since we could get a scary Dionysus. Hopefully it doesn't get ruined :(
Edit : some English mistakes I had to correct.

Odyssey Mermaid AU ideas (inspired by @dootznbootz 's post and @tagzpite 's Fishysseus AU ):
On account of their naiad genes, Telemachus and Penelope can turn their legs into mermaid tails when wet.
Instead of sailing to find his father, Telemachus swims out to sea using his merman tail to find him. Meanwhile Penelope has to stay behind and rule Ithaca in his absence. And instead of asking Menelaus, Telemachus decides to ask Poseidon himself.
Instead of a sea nymph saving Odysseus from drowning, Telemachus in his merman form finds and saves him. As in the poem, Telemachus would swim them both to Phaecia as it's the nearest land, then his tail turns back into legs.
Once Telemachus and Odysseus are safely on land, they get to know each other. Cue emotional father-son reunion much sooner than in the poem. Telemachus would instantly get his dad up to speed on what's happened in Ithaca since his absence.
The rest of the story is just like in the original poem.

I need the matching set!
Tumblr media
Really happy with how she turned out! I decided to give her some naiad features, inspired by this post and it was really fun! I hc that she can breathe underwater (even though she doesn't have gills. Do naiads have gills?), although I am not sure if she can do it freely or for a limited amount of time 🤔
The fabric piece covering her chest was loosely inspired by 18th century neckerchiefs, because I wasn't sure how the Mycenaean open chest fashion would fly with the censorship here or on other platforms ¯\_(• ▽ •;)_/¯

It was raining, storming, thundering. You had gotten soaked.
Telemachus was outside too. But you realized he didn’t get wet. Not even a bit. Not a single rain drop.
You thought it was because of the naiad stuff. But you were pretty sure naiad’s had no control over the raining.
He looked confused as you stared.
“Uh, you fine?” He smiled.
