Eurovision Fact #526:
Nadir Rustamli won The Voice of Azerbaijan before coming to Eurovision in 2022 with his song "Fade to Black." On the show, he was coached by Eldar Gasimov, half of the duo Ell/Nikki, who won Eurovision in 2011.
Rustamli said when he picked Gasimov as his coach he had Eurovision in mind, as he always dreamed of representing Azerbaijan.

Ok I thought it'd be irresponsible to talk about Eurovision without speaking about Israel, I excluded Israel in all these rankings because no matter what you support you have to admit that they have broken international law and brought this years contest into disrepute (the reason they disqualified Russia in 2022) by harassing other delegates and if the EBU wants Eurovision to continue I think we need Israel banned until this horrible conflict is over and sorted.

1, 5, 7!
hi!!! thank you for this!
1 - A song you like with a color in the title
I love Red from McFly (one of my favorite band really). In french I can give you La couleur de la mer by Petit K, but it's cheating because it's "color" and not "a" color!
5- A song that needs to be played LOUD
I loooooove to play my music loud in my headphones because: feelings. But i'm gonna say Fade to Black by Nadir Rustamli bc it's EPIC, and for the french one I'm shoosing Chaque Seconde by Pierre Garnier, who won our BIGGEST tv show, la Star Academy. He is perfect and this song makes me wanna dance when i'm listening it in the bus.
7- A song to drive to
Actually I havn't my driving license because 1) I don't need a car in Paris and 2) with my ADHD I'm affraid I wont be able to feel safe, but I love listening to music while in car. When I was a kid, my mom played a lot Can't Take My Eyes Off You by Gloria Gaynor so when I think of cars and music, it's the one that come. For the french part of my answer, I actually LOVE listening to french musical. I can recommand Romeo et Juliette, Mozart l'Opéra Rock et Molière le Spectacle Musical which is my favorite EVER. I've already seen it twice and will go again next time they come to Paris. Here is my favorite song from the show, Et si c'Etait Nous Deux by Vike and Shaïna Pronzola.
Hope you'll like discovering french songs!! Thank you again for the ask ❤️

Time to write "an opinion wildly diverging from literally everyone else" into the annual bingo. Happened to me a few times as well *cough cough* Nadir Rustamli and Circus Mircus *cough cough*

My comparison of Eurovision 2022 vs. 2023
It’s been a while (like, a really long time, way before my current account) since I’ve shared Eurovision opinions on Tumblr and I decided for this year I would like to share at least one project on here since I’ve returned to using my blog somewhat regularly.
As the title suggests I will be talking about both this year’s and last year’s entries, and then deciding which one I like better of the two. I would love to know what other people think so feel free to tell me your thoughts in the tags or replies or via ask or something if you read all this and thought it was interesting. Also sorry that this post is gonna be so long I didn’t feel like doing this in multiple parts.
Anyways I am going in ABC order so Albania is first!
Albania
2022: Ronela Hajati with “Sekret” vs. 2023: Albina & Familja Kelmendi with “Duje”
I think both of these entries are good. I think “Sekret” deserved its fan fave status despite having a messy performance, and “Duje” is unique and has a pretty good chance of at least qualifying this year. Ultimately, while I like “Duje”’s message, I prefer listening to “Sekret” because it’s fun. So that’s one point on the board for 2022.
1-0
Armenia
2022: Rosa Linn with “Snap” vs. 2023: Brunette with “Future Lover”
I prefer “Future Lover”. I think it is a more interesting song and I like the uniqueness in its artistic approach. “Snap” is ok though and I feel its virality was not without merit.
1-1
Australia
2022: Sheldon Riley with “Not The Same” vs. 2023: Voyager with “Promise”
I think “Not The Same” is a lot better than “Promise”. “Not The Same” had a really beautiful performance and message, and I think it is a well-produced ballad. “Promise” has a lot of... uh, promise, but I think the energy is really weak and the mixing/production make the song sound really flat. It could be a lot better Sheldon swept this one
2-1
Austria
2022: Lumix ft. Pia Maria with “Halo” vs. 2023: Teya and Salena with “Who The Hell Is Edgar?”
Now don’t get me wrong, “Halo” is still a really good song, even with the not-so-strong live performance. However, “Who The Hell Is Edgar?” seems poised to bring an energetic and iconic performance and is simply just a way more memorable prospect. So I can’t not pick it.
2-2
Azerbaijan
2022: Nadir Rustamli with “Fade to Black” vs. 2023: TuralTuranX with “Tell Me More”
I prefer “Tell Me More” quite a bit. Like “Fade to Black” is okay but I think “Tell Me More” is more nostalgic and authentic and I like that more. They’re like if Simon and Garfunkel were young people making music in 2003 instead of the late 60s
2-3
Belgium
2022: Jérémie Makiese with “Miss You” vs. 2023: Gustaph with “Because of You”
Honestly, “Miss You” isn’t bad or anything, but I just really love “Because of You” and it’s one of my favorites this year. I don’t think it would win Eurovision or anything but it’s just so fun and uplifting. I LOVE 90s dance music so that’s probably part of it.
2-4
Croatia
2022: Mia Dimšić with “Guilty Pleasure” vs. 2023: Let 3 with "Mama ŠČ!"
I think this is actually less about Let 3 being humorous, intriguing, and iconic (and like, they are, don’t get me wrong) and more about how I just am not the target audience for “Guilty Pleasure”. This is gonna be my first hater post of this list but I simply do not emphasize with cheating for any reason, like girl if you’re unhappy just leave his ass. You’re annoying
2-5
Cyprus
2022: Andromache with “Ela” vs. 2023: Andrew Lambrou with “Break a Broken Heart”
I would say both of these songs are decent and I like them about the same. "Ela” is slightly better though, I like that there’s Greek in it and that it has pretty moments.
3-5
Czechia
2022: We Are Domi with “Lights Off” vs. 2023: Vesna with “My Sister’s Crown”
These are both pretty amazing songs but I am, at least at this point in time, vibing more with “My Sister’s Crown”.
3-6
Denmark
2022: Reddi with “The Show” vs. 2023: Reiley with “Breaking My Heart”
Yeah uh I don’t know Denmark isn’t really the strongest Eurovision contender recently. “Breaking My Heart” is more memorable and catchy so I like it more for that
3-7
Estonia
2022: Stefan with “Hope” vs. 2023: ALIKA with “Bridges”
“Hope” was my pre-contest winner and I still love the song a lot so this was an easy choice for me!! I still think “Bridges” is nice though.
4-7
Finland
2022: The Rasmus with “Jezebel” vs. 2023: Käärijä with “Cha Cha Cha”
Speaking of easy choices, “Cha Cha Cha” is easily a huge improvement over Finland’s 2022 entry “Jezebel”. I was never really a fan of that one at all, but Käärijä’s song is a potential winner to me. I love it
4-8
France
2022: Alvan & Ahez with “Fulenn” vs. 2023: La Zarra with “Évidemment”
On the other hand, this was actually a really narrow margin because I think both of these songs are really good. In this moment I prefer “Fulenn” but only by a little bit! I usually really like what France sends (yes even Tom Leeb)
5-8
Georgia
2022: Circus Mircus with “Lock Me In” vs. 2023: Iru with “Echo”
I don’t think Iru’s song is bad, but I don’t think in the times I’ve listened to it that it’s clicked with me or left enough of an impression. I enjoy “Lock Me In” a lot more
6-8
Germany
2022: Malik Harris with “Rockstars” vs. 2023: Lord of the Lost with “Blood and Glitter”
I thought “Rockstars” was a fairly decent attempt, but Lord of the Lost’s entry definitely stands out a lot more to me. “Blood and Glitter” feels a lot more like what I would expect Germany to send so I’m glad they finally have.
6-9 (nice)
Greece
2022: Amanda Tenfjord Georgiadi with “Die Together” vs. 2023: Victor Vernicos with “What They Say”
Yeah I thought “Die Together” was absolutely beautiful. She did a really great job especially in the semifinal performance. “What They Say” leaves like zero impression on me when I listen to it, it isn’t bad but I just don’t think it’s for me.
7-9
Iceland
2022: Systur with "Með hækkandi sól" vs. 2023: Diljá with “Power”
I think these are both good songs, and it could’ve gone either way, but Systur’s entry narrowly beat out Diljá’s here. “Power” is a cool song, but I thought "Með hækkandi sól" was really heartwarming and I’m glad it qualified because I was convinced it couldn’t. So that’s why I picked it in the end
8-9
Ireland
2022: Brooke with “That’s Rich” vs. 2023: Wild Youth with “We Are One”
I much prefer “That’s Rich” by robbed queen Brooke! It was such a FUN song! It’s unfortunate that it was followed up with Wild Youth’s song, which I find is extremely generic.
9-9
Israel
2022: Michael Ben David with “I.M” vs. 2023: Noa Kirel with “Unicorn”
Ok I’m gonna be real with y’all. I think both of these songs are annoying as shit. I guess if I have to pick one it would have to be “I.M” because honestly at least the beat is consistent. And maybe because its the older of the two songs I have a higher tolerance for it
10-9
Italy
2022: Mahmood & Blanco with “Brividi” vs. 2023: Marco Mengoni with “Due vite”
Honestly I like both of these songs but not like... a lot? Like “Due vite” is fine and I find “Brividi” entertaining in a way that makes me not able to take it seriously but I still enjoy it. So like that’s why I like “Brividi” more. I wish Marco sent something that wasn’t a ballad because honestly some of his more upbeat music is really good. “Due vite” just lacks a little something for me. There’s nothing new or fresh or inventive about it. Which I think is sad. And that might be the case for “Brividi” too but at least Blanco stomping around the Eurovision stage like he just shat himself was funny.
11-9
Latvia
2022: Citi Zēni with “Eat Your Salad” vs. 2023: Sudden Lights with "Aijā"
These are both incredible songs in my opinion!! I do not want to be misconstrued as an “Eat Your Salad” anti because I do love that song. But I think "Aijā" is really beautiful and transformative and special. It’s in my top 3 this year!
11-10
Lithuania
2022: Monika Liu with “Sentimentai” vs. 2023: Monika Linkytė with “Stay”
“Stay” is like, an okay song but “Sentimentai” was such a moment. She mothered all over that damn stage!!!
12-10
Malta
2022: Emma Muscat with “I Am What I Am” vs. 2023: The Busker with “Dance (Our Own Party)”
“I Am What I Am” was so unbelievably bland and disingenuous and I’m really glad that Malta is sending something that is the complete opposite of that this year! Like yes we want to dance!
12-11
Moldova
2022: Zdob și Zdub & Advahov Brothers with "Trenulețul" vs. 2023: Pasha Parfeny with "Soarele și luna"
This decision was one of the harder ones because I think both these songs are really cool and interesting, but at this moment in time I prefer "Soarele și luna" by just a little bit!
12-12
Netherlands
2022: S10 with “De diepte” vs. 2023: Dion Cooper & Mia Nicolai with “Burning Daylights”
I definitely resonate a lot more with S10′s entry. “Burning Daylights” just doesn’t really do anything for me and I find it to be not technically bad but still boring.
13-12
Norway
2022: Subwoolfer with “Give That Wolf A Banana” vs. 2023: Alessandra with “Queen of Kings”
This was another unbelievably close choice because Norway has been serving us hit after hit these past few years. I just think I enjoy “Give That Wolf A Banana” just a tiny bit more because the whole thing was really intriguing and clever. The song is still so catchy and enjoyable to me and the way Subwoolfer successfully kept that act up for over a year is insane to me so I have to give them credit for that too.
14-12
Poland
2022: Ochman with “River” vs. 2023: Blanka with “Solo”
Ok here’s me going into absolute hater mode but I think most people will understand and agree. This was extremely by far the most obvious choice. Blanka has zero talent especially when you compare her to a performer like Ochman, and her song is really terrible. She did not win the national selection by her own merits and the Polish people do not feel represented by her. So I’m right there with them, fuck that song. “Gladiator” should be here
15-12
Portugal
2022: Maro with "Saudade, saudade" vs. 2023: Mimicat with "Ai coração"
I think both of these songs are fantastic and both do an amazing thing by incorporating Portuguese culture in their own ways, but I would say “Saudade, saudade” resonates with me a lot more.
16-12
Romania
2022: WRS with “Llámame" vs. 2023: Theodor Andrei with "D.G.T. (Off and On)"
I find “D.G.T” ...intriguing? I guess? But WRS and his dancers ate that stage up what else could I possibly say
17-12
San Marino
2022: Achille Lauro with “Stripper” vs. 2023: Piqued Jacks with “Like An Animal”
I’m one of the few people that actually kind of enjoys San Marino’s entry this year, but I would be lying if I said “Stripper” was worse than it. Achille Lauro ate that stage up what else could I possibly say
18-12
Serbia
2022: Konstrakta with “In Corpore Sano” vs. 2023: Luke Black with “Samo mi se spava”
These are both such masterpieces to me but I like “Samo mi se spava” a little more. Like I think “In Corpore Sano” has a really interesting message but I like the music of “Samo mi se spava” more so I like listening to it more if that makes sense
18-13
Slovenia
2022: LPS with “Disko” vs. 2023: Joker Out with “Carpe Diem”
This is a lot like Serbia where I think both songs are great but one just barely gets ahead of the other. I think “Carpe Diem” has more polish and confidence to it and it sells me a bit more, but I still really like “Disko” too.
18-14
Spain
2022: Chanel with “SloMo” vs. 2023: Blanca Paloma with “EAEA”
This is another battle where both songs are very good and also very different, so it’s hard to compare them. I enjoy “EAEA” and think it’s beautiful, but I also overall find “SloMo” to still be really impressive and fun to listen to. So I choose “SloMo” by a thin margin.
19-14
Sweden
2022: Cornelia Jakobs with “Hold Me Closer” vs. 2023: Loreen with “Tattoo”
I genuinely don’t even think there’s a wrong answer to this question, like in my heart neither of these are “losers.” But I would say at this point in time I am more into “Tattoo” by just a little bit.
19-15
Switzerland
2022: Marius Bear with “Boys Do Cry” vs. 2023: Remo Forrer with “Watergun”
I think both of these songs are pretty mediocre. I think “Watergun” might be slightly better though.
19-16
Ukraine
2022: Kalush Orchestra with “Stefania” vs. 2023: TVORCHI with “Heart of Steel”
I love both of these songs nearly equally, and although I have been particularly vibing a lot with TVORCHI’s discography lately, I do have to say that “Stefania” is definitely a really striking and unique song that deserves a lot of credit, so for that reason I have to pick “Stefania”.
20-16
United Kingdom
2022: Sam Ryder with “Space Man” vs. 2023: Mae Muller with “I Wrote A Song”
I do like Mae Muller’s song, especially because I feel it is very representative of modern British pop music, but I don’t think it holds up the same when you compare it to “Space Man”. Like that was an absolute moment that a lot of people wouldn’t have seen coming given the UK’s recent track record. It blows me away to think about. Sam Ryder’s talent is insane.
21-16
So the final count is 21 points for 2022 and 16 points for 2023. Not super unbalanced especially because a lot of these battles were pretty close for me! Anyways if you read all of this for some reason thank you so much, you’re a legend and maybe you should let me know what you thought of my opinions if you want to! Thanks and see you around!

Eurovision Fact #322:
Roughly 76 percent of the 2023 contest's songs are either entirely or partly in English. That's a roughly 6 percent decrease from the 2022 contest, which saw 80 percent of its songs in English either entirely or partly.
In 2023, the only nations not singing in English are Albania, Croatia, Finland, France, Italy, Moldova, Portugal, Slovenia, and Spain.
In 2022, the nations not singing in English were France, Iceland, Italy, Lithuania, Netherlands, Serbia, Slovenia, and Ukraine.
