- soda is a terrible navigater like AWFUL he wants shot gun SO bad but Darry forces ponyboy into shot gun when he needs someone to tell him how to get somewhere. Soda once held a map upside-down for 10 minutes n by the time he realized they were in the middle of no where

- Dallas drives with all the windows down ALL year soda loves it bc he likes to stick his head out but literally NO one else does. in winter he has the heat up ALL the way n STILL has the windows down. the only person he will put them up for is Johnny who doesn't rlly mind. he still asks now n then bc he looks over n pony is like 🥺

- steve has the ABILITY to be a good driver n IS most of the time. however. if the road is empty n he is about to miss his turn or something (thanks soda) he will just drive over four lanes of traffic. he also is a chronic rolling stopper.

- pony is so stressed when he drives. talking white knuckling the wheel. for the first year he drives he goes EXACTLY the limit. soda nearly tears his hair out. when they get where they're going he always cajoles pony into letting him drive back. (they get back in half the time it took to get there)

- when any of them see cops on the road they all silently point n go 'cop'

- except when Dallas n Soda are driving. then it's more 'COP COP COP SLOW DOWN'

-steve is HYPER aware of speed ticket cops. they never have to warn his ass bc he clocked them from a mile away

- Multiple times a cop has gotta behind Dallas n he's turned to the ppl in the car n gone watch me out run this guy. one time he was alone with Pony n got into a game of 'lose the cops on the highway' n pony BAWLED that guy got out of the car legs SHAKING (Darry CHEWED Dallas ear off for that one. he did it again)

- speaking of soda can charm his way out of a ticket SO fast. he has the biggest wettest eyes n has NO problem using them

- Darry taught Johnny to drive after he'd taught pony. sometimes Pony would go with them n whine SO bad bc Johnny SLAMS on the brakes n darrys like ok try that again buddy a lil softer n Pony's like U SAID I WAS THE WORSE DRIVER U HAD EVER MET WHEN I DID THAT

- U can always tell when Two has an open beer in the car bc he becomes the most law abiding driver to ever exist. I'm talking stopping at yellow lights. Full stop stop signs. He also thinks it's deeply funny to get a cop to tail him n then waste their time by suddenly becoming a perfect driver n just driving all over town.

- soda will forgive nearly everything ppl do to him on the road. ppl cut him off n he's like aw man whatever. darry is not above calling someone an asshole but will leave it at that. pony learned roadrage from Dallas. they get SO irate on the road. horn HONKING. middle finger OUT THE WINDOW. window ROLLED DOWN AT THE LIGHTS SO THEY CAN YELL. Dallas is the type to reach over the driver to honk the horn. Steve is mostly chill but if u say some bullshit to him at a light he WILL get out of his car n beat the hell out of u n then be back in his car before the light changes

- Soda and Steve are both lead-footed as FUCK but they're ultimately responsible drivers

- However, their responsibility goes out the window if they pull up next to a Soc at a red light (at which the race is immediately ON)

- Darry drives with one hand on the steering wheel and his elbow on the edge of the window

- Ponyboy hates learning how to drive because Darry gets impatient with him and yells all the while Soda's in the back just laughing his ass off

I still think about my mutuals tag where he said that he thinks Johnny feels so much and so deeply that it literally drove him crazy. And yeah. Just think about it constantly. It's. The statement I associate with him. The first thing I think of when I think of him.

I really, really, really dislike when people paint Johnny as this totally unfeeling asshole. Or at least, I heavily disagree with it. That's not to say he isn't an asshole, he 100% is. He's a jerk to the people around him, and of course there really is no excuse for how he treats people. But explanations =/= excuses.

I feel when people try to paint him that way, it comes from a place that lacks understanding or even an unwillingness to understand. This goes hand in hand where I'll see these people call him an unfeeling asshole while using terms associated with cluster b disorders and using the social weight they carry to demonize him, a very prevalent problem reflected in society and internet pop psychology culture.

They'll take the fact he's a 'narcissistic junkie', and not only at the same time use it to demonize people with NPD, but also drug users. It's just a very lazy way to paint a picture of his characterization, by using loaded terms as a crutch and letting their social weight, using yours and others people's biases, do the job for you. Like man, if you're going to make a critique of his character can we at least actually put some effort behind it.

Like. They think he's a user who's an unfeeling asshole to people just for the sake of being one. They see him engaging in these self endangering, self harming, self sabotaging behaviors and brush it off as nothing more than him being like that simply because he likes it, that he relishes in it even. Simply because he wants and chooses to be like that.

They don't see him using as a way of numbing himself (this especially with the fact drugs are the first thing he goes for when Alt breaks it off with him). They don't see that constant toxic push and pull in his relationships as self sabotage. They don't see the fact him going on that OP was a suicide mission. Literally.

I truly believe he never intended to come back from that mission, evident in his last exchange with Kerry, evident in a LOT of his own lyrics. (Black Dog, Ballad of Buck Ravers.)

Johnny clearly is passionate. He clearly has things he cares about. He clearly feels.

I'd even go so far as to say he genuinely does care about the people in his life, he just simply doesn't know how to show it properly or in a way that's healthy for anyone involved. Even when Alt breaks up with him, and he pushes her away for it, he still ends up chasing after her before she's even left the venue. He still tries to protect her. When Alt gets abducted, and yeah, he's being a leadheaded stubborn idiot about it, he still goes after her.

And even if it's self aggrandizing in a lot of ways, he still cares about her life enough to raid a whole fucking tower for her. Even if it's more in the view of what Arasaka took from him, than what it did to her, he still cares about her in his own way. He still grieves her. He's still broken up when she dies right in front of him, and he still acts out even if it's violent and angry. His grief has ALWAYS manifested this way.

When he sees the headlines about Kerry, he asks V to check up on him, to visit him. He even asks Kerry about it because (I think) it came from a place of genuine worry shown the best way he can show it, a straightforward question and dropping it when he gets an answer, no matter how truthful the answer is. When Kerry gets the idea for a one time reunion, Johnny agrees to it because he thinks 'Kerry needs this'.

I also think people see that he's a very angry person and attribute 'unfeeling' to that. Because to them, to a lot of people, anger isn't a valid emotion nor one with as much value as happiness or sadness. That's it's something less than. Even if anger was all he felt, it's still a feeling. He still feels it. He still feels.

His anger, though it's execution is obviously a problem, it's extremely fucking justified and valid. It's born from the mistreatment of a system that only destroys people's lives. Born from a system that only knows how to take, how to hurt, how to kill.

The same system that took, not just a literal piece of Johnny, but so many pieces of his identity and his life that he literally tries to project himself as an entirely new person to escape this.

Johnny cares about how the system treats people, especially people like him. How it uses people and chews them up and discards them when it's taken all it can from them. Johnny cares so much he becomes not just a voice, but thinks he is- and in a lot of ways he does really become one- a symbol for people like him.

That OP functioned as another rescue mission for Alt, another statement for his ideals, and his blaze of glory to go out on his own terms.

Johnny cares about things. Johnny cares about people. He has feelings. Complicated, convoluted, deeply traumatized feelings. Feelings that are so intense, that it harms him. Feelings that are so intense, that it bleeds from him and harms others, too.

And honestly, I'd say the one and only person he stopped truly caring about was himself. A long, long time ago.

You sat on your couch staring at your lazily decorated tree, a carefully wrapped gift resting on your lap, anxiously awaiting the arrival of a certain masked murderer. As time passed, doubt crept in- would he even show up? Did he have any interest in Christmas or the thought behind gifts? You held onto a flicker of hope that he did, especially after spending countless hours selecting the perfect present for him.

Michael remained an enigma, always maintaining a significant distance from you. Yet, there were fleeting moments when he allowed you to draw near, close enough to feel the heat radiating from his body and to hear the soft breaths escaping from behind the mask. But just as quickly as those moments arrived, they vanished. This left you grappling with the nature of your relationship with michael. Was it something romantic? Or was he merely using you for food and shelter, waiting for the perfect moment to stab you in the back?

Gratitude surged within you for the simple act of breathing in this moment. The familiar creaking of the floorboards jolted you from your thoughts, prompting you to swiftly glance around the room in search of that haunting white mask. There he was, lurking in the shadows of the corner, almost invisible in the dim light coming from your christmas tree. Your heart pounded with a mix of fear and excitement. As you rose from your seat, you awkwardly fumbled with the gift in your hands and offered him a brief greeting.

“I wasn't sure if you wanted anything, but I got you something regardless.” your voice trembled as you spoke, a part of you bracing for him to emerge and turn on you at that very moment.

Michael stepped out from the shadows, and you quickly noted with a sense of relief that he didn't have his knife in hand, meaning you were safe for now, at least for the moment. You held out the gift, feeling his rough and calloused hands brush against yours for just a split second as he took it from you, a small interaction that felt almost intimate amidst the tension. His movements were stiff as he tore the wrapping paper off, carelessly discarding it to the side. You bit your nail anxiously as he opened the box, revealing a pair of new boots that may not quite fit, possibly a size too big or too small, since you had no idea what Michael's shoe size was, but you thought it might have been quite some time since he had replaced the tattered ones he was currently wearing, which were worn out and stained with dirt and dried blood.

Michael stared at the boots for what seemed like an eternity before closing the box and placing it on the table, leaving you in a state of confusion. He stood there, gazing at you with a slight tilt of his head, making you wonder if he liked the gift or not. Your heart raced as he quickly rounded the table; your body stiffened as you braced yourself, fearing for the worst. To your surprise, you felt the warm embrace of his arms wrapping stiffly around you, pulling you tight against his chest. The familiar metallic scent that always accompanied him was even more pronounced now. For years, Michael had not experienced the kindness of being treated like a normal humming being. It had been so long since someone had looked at him the way you did, with that familiar spark in your eyes whenever you caught sight of him in the corner. He couldn't understand you, he knew fear lingered in your heart, yet you continued to treat him as if he were just another person in your life. You always made sure to leave extra food for him, leaving your back door unlocked so he wouldn't have to struggle to enter. You never disclosed his presence in your home to anyone, whether out of fear that he might harm you or for your own personal reasons. Michael was truly grateful for your gift, even though it caught him by surprise.

You were genuinely expecting Michael to pull away as soon as you returned the hug, but shockingly, he didn't budge. Instead, you seized the moment to relax further into his embrace, savoring the warmth and comfort it provided, all while attempting your best to push aside the chilling reminder that this man has taken multiple lives. It was a surreal contradiction, feeling safe and at ease in the arms of someone with such a dark history. But in that moment, all that mattered was the security of his hold, even if that comfort was deeply unsettling.
