There are a lot of great educators out there, but too many people just to critique without actually considering why it's like that.

Do you like the wood bath "mats"? Where did you get them?
i-will-not-be-caged
Also curious about the wood bath mats! Does water drip onto the floor underneath? Do you have to wipe it up or is it negligible enough that it can just evaporate?
(Regarding these)
I do like them a lot; my bathroom is where the kitty litterbox lives, so it tends to get kind of a dirty floor, and when I had a carpet down, the carpet just clung to whatever dust, cat hair, litter etc. came in and was a pain to vacuum. When I didn’t have a carpet down, it just went everywhere. Either way, getting out of the shower every morning, my wet feet would step on the floor/carpet and pick up all kinds of unpleasantness.
My first time at the Korean spa up in Niles, I saw them using a similar mat to these to elevate peoples’ feet off the floors a little, which kept their feet cleaner (because the slats have holes any debris can fall through) and also make cleaning easier (just lift the mats and sweep underneath). So I bought one to replace my “getting out of the shower” mat, and it worked great. I knew I wanted to replace the rug in the bathroom with more mats, but I held off because pulling up the rug, cleaning up the adhesive under it, ordering the mats etc. seemed like a good chore for November.
These are Gobam, a Chinese brand, which I like because they’re built very sturdily; other brands tend to have much thinner slats and fewer supports, and Gobam also have little rubber feet that keep them from skidding. They aren’t cheap, but they’re worth the extra cost in my opinion. The only place you can really get them retail in the US is from Amazon, although once I found them on Amazon I checked eBay and was able to buy them there for a comparable price.
They’re very stable, smooth on the feet, with narrow gaps so the gaps don’t hurt your feet either, and they’re relatively lightweight so easy to lift and move if you want to sweep under them. I used the mat by the bathtub for about six months without bothering to sweep or mop up underneath it, and it was actually quite clean when I checked it -- no mildew from the water, very little dirt under it. It depends on how much water you like to shed when coming out of the shower (I dry myself off while standing in the shower and only then exit) but I haven’t had any concerns about water collecting underneath them.

mymyriadmusings replied to your post “Angie Craig is reported to have won, and I’m just so happy about that”
I'm so happy about this! Craig is great - I did some door knocking with her campaign in Hastings and walked away really discouraged, so I'm so glad folks came through
ayyy, I’m in Hastings. But, also, like, live in a house with two republicans, and don’t answer the door much myself, tbh.

I also desperately want the Kids to just start showing up at Space Dad's apartment.
uM ... YES??? lol Winn would just barge in whenever like Kramer on Seinfeld because he thought of some new question about Mars, Kara would show up randomly insisting that M’yrnn just has to try whatever food she happened to be snacking on at any given hour, and Alex would be all hesitant at first about imposing but then secretly end up being the one who comes over the most.

mymyriadmusings replied to your post “New movie while I eat and this is the most southern thing I’ve ever...”
What movie?
This one was Christmas in the Smokies. It was...okay? Not much of an emotional pay off because oddly enough they didn’t have the romantic leads in many scenes together (compared to normal romance movies).
But very, very southern. Southern food, southern culture, real southern accents, Jesus freaking everywhere. They read the entire passage of the bible covering Jesus’ birth, not just the first couple lines. A very cute movie overall just a flimsy plotline.
#mymyriadmusings#i actually liked every single character in the movie#but they went straight from 'i hate you!' to 'of course i love you'#with the leads and there wasn't any...lead up really#beyond the fact they were high school sweethearts#which i guess is pretty southern too#???? maybe?#the first time i lived in the south i was 19/20 and was asked why i was waiting so long to get married

This may seem like an exaggeration, the idea that one can learn how to properly think like a criminal by learning how crime stories work. On a personal note, let me tell a story from the Leverage writer’s room.
Apollo Robbins (http://www.istealstuff.com/) runs a crew of professional thieves who consult for law enforcement. He was also our criminal consultant on Leverage. Every few weeks he would visit the writer’s room to advise on the scripts and keep us up to date about new cons and the latest in criminal technology.
One day during the third season he sat in with the writers while we broke a story. We posted the details of a real-life white collar criminal up on the room’s whiteboard, using him as the basis for our Mark. We looked at his weaknesses, how he moved his money, what his hobbies were. Once we were happy with that element of the story we added a Vault to the mix, one that used an interesting new alarm technology we’d researched. We then spent about an hour figuring out how to circumvent that alarm. We even sketched out a map of the imaginary building so we could keep track of our Crew’s movements during the Job.
“Well, I’m done here,” Apollo muttered. Noting our confusion, he pointed at the board and index cards cluttering the wall. “This is exactly how real Crews plan these things. This writer’s room is now a fully functioning criminal gang. You could be thieves.”
Of course writing television pays better than crime (usually), with far less chance of being arrested (usually), so we all managed to resist the temptation. But aside from the day a US Attorney asked us to change a plot because we’d created a scam that was a little too foolproof, or when a Homeland Security Agent admitted they were spooked by a security hole we’d exploited in our season finale, it was certainly one of the proudest moments I had on the show.

mymyriadmusings replied to your photoset “NEW RUGS. Blue one is under my desk to keep my feet warm this winter,...”
Ooh! Nice, where did you get them?
It’s a site called esalerugs.com -- they’re family owned, reasonably cheap, and they have a ton of varieties. I’ve had good luck with them -- last time I had to delay a delivery and they were super nice on the phone.
sempernap replied to your photoset “NEW RUGS. Blue one is under my desk to keep my feet warm this winter,...”
Rugs were never important until I moved on my own. Then I discovered how hard was to get a decent, esthetically pleasing rug for a reasonable price.
RIGHT? I saw the price of a rug at Bed Bath & Beyond when I got my first place in Chicago and almost lost my mind. Ikea has good cheap ones, though, and esalerugs does too. These ran me $19 for the blue one, $24 for the orange, both are 2′x3′.
lostwendy replied to your photoset “NEW RUGS. Blue one is under my desk to keep my feet warm this winter,...”
Those are nice!
Thank you! The orange one’s too short, I should have gotten a longer one, but it still looks nice with the furniture.

are you suggesting Alex is that grandkid who falls asleep on the couch all the time but also has set up the entertainment system?
Um, Winn has definitely beaten her to the entertainment system. Alex is the grandkid who explains vital survival skills, like how to use the automatic checkout machine at the grocery store. (But absolutely also the one who falls asleep on the couch. They get a special fuzzy blanket just for her. Winn sneaks it out one day and embroiders her name on it with embarrassing sequin embellishments.)

I for one would love to hear your thoughts on The Green Knight
I am assuming you are asking about the movie, since that's what I've been blogging about lately!
This movie ... it didn't work for me.
I am not an Arthurian scholar, I am not super knowledgable about film, I already know there are a lot of people this movie works very well for! But for me, it didn't. It was interesting, for sure. Sequences of it were really cool (I loved the Winifred section, and also the wee interlude with the giants). Dev Patel did some amazing acting. The costumes, with a few exceptions, were absolutely GORGEOUS. (What I would not give for a cloak like Gawain's.) While the timeline changes made a few things worse, I really liked the vigil before the ending.
But it's not my story, specifically because it's not my Gawain. It's really more of--I've been talking a lot about this movie with @sovinly, and at one point we agreed that it felt kind of like someone had Mordred or Agravain or another knight who wasn't Gawain do the Green Knight story.
I can forgive, though my pedantic soul cries out, Morgan instead of Morgause (at least by implication) being Gawain's mother, and there being sisters. Exact accuracies of legend ... really, there aren't many, because that's how legends work. I can be pleased at the nods to the poem, the Virgin Mary shield for instance.
But--I'm going to steal more of Sovin's words, because they are much more eloquent than I am, and their point is that the Green Knight is about goodness as a constant choice, and how Gawain chooses that goodness almost always, and regrets it when he falters. Because Gawain is Arthur's right hand, one of his closest companions, famous for being A Good Knight. He's honorable! He has fun with his bargain with Lord Bertilak and willingly passes days worth of kisses on to him, and certainly wouldn't have run off once the game was set! And he still falters and still fails, and he goes home and admits this! And the Round Table honors him for this!
And instead we got ... this Gawain. And look, there are worthy stories to be told about cowards only plucking up their courage at the end, but this isn't one of them. Because it's just not Gawain! I don't get the point of keeping the plot beats but completely changing the character and his arc! It is, in fact, the same plot beats with a COMPLETELY OPPOSITE character arc. And sure, maybe there's some great and deep cinematic reason for this, but I really do not care? It's bullshit, and I cannot believe there's that whole interview where the director saw Dev Patel and started drawing fanart of him looking noble on a horse and then DIDN'T LET HIM PLAY GAWAIN as the noble knight he is, which I would have fucking loved to see Dev Patel play.
Also, to conclude, that ten minutes of self-indulgent potential-future flash-forward was exhausting bullshit and, to be entirely frank, Breaking Dawn Part 2 did it better.
#i could have complained more but frankly that last burn is so sick i've got to stop there#mymyriadmusings#answered asks#as always you can enjoy whatever you want to and i am not objectively right nor claiming to be#i just feel really disappointed that a movie i've been looking forward to for years turned out to really fail the story it was adapting#and this doesn't even touch on all the weirdness with lady bertilak#and the bell girl#and the implications of incest
