Sanji… is being… weird.

I didn’t address this but he was VERY happy to see Luffy again after what was only a day, maybe two of separation after Luffy got washed ashore. He was like running towards Luffy like it was the Zoro-Luffy reunion with his arms wide open but gets cut off by Chopper and Carrot.

Like I can see from a “Luffy and the crew have been reasserted as my number one priority and imma prove how ride or die I am” perspective why Sanji may have acted that way.

And just now, Law apologised to Kin’emon about him, Luffy and Zoro’s identities getting discovered and Sanji immediately got pissed and went to blame Law.

But like, Chopper and Nami immediately were like “oh it was deffo Luffy’s fault”

And then Sanji was like “oh Nami-san is apologising for Luffy’s actions? Did I overreact?” And also apologised for Luffy in a “huh oh yeah our Captain is like that how did I forget but also I’m kinda reluctant to apologise to this guy” kind of way. But he has no other beef with Law that I recall so why is he sparking up like Law is Zoro?

THIS IS VERY ZOSAN CODED. That’s what it is. Sanji is acting like Zoro is Law and it seems so out of pocket. I don’t think they’re close enough to have this kind of combative exchange?

I’m also including the desperate attempt to “recover” Okiku’s attention from Kin’emon (despite never having it in the first place???) as excessive Sanji vibes.

The Outcasts (1968) - Episode 2: A Ride to Vengeance

This is the kind of show that starts with the main characters mugging "GASP! Did you STEAL the COOKIES?" faces in response to surprise false murder charges and ends with them bickering about money and riding away laughing while a couple they nearly broke up watches in mute disdain. However, It is also the kind of show that (without using the specific terminology, because it was written in 1968 and is about emotionally constipated men in 1873) unpacks the fact that a) the Black lead has PTSD as a result of being a slave, b) that a white man accused him of murder simply because he made a fool of him years earlier, and c) that he is aware of things as a Black man in 1800's America that the white lead is not and that the white lead doesn't need him to prove that to believe it's true. The tonal whiplash is occasionally vertigo-inducing.

Books of 2024: THE GIRL IN RED by Christina Henry.

We took a trip to Red River Gorge this weekend, and I both started and finished this book while we were there! It was a very speedy read.

While I did really enjoy the genre-savvy protag, I was expecting more Wolf Presence in a Little Red Riding Hood retelling, either literally or metaphorically (I mean, come on, look at that cover??). There were a couple references to (metaphorical) wolves and one coyote-man comparison early on (also metaphorical), but it felt like the Wolf Motif mostly was dropped, which was an Interesting Choice™, given that the plot entire was Red walking through an apocalypse and the forest to her grandmother's house. (Yes, she really goes by Red, which is not her name--she just really likes her red outerwear.)

This was also much more ongoing-apocalypse than post-apocalypse, and said apocalypse is referred to in-book as "the Cough" (publication date: June 2019?? wild). Family Units are endangered and fall sick on page, be warned! In addition to the Cough, there's also quite a bit of gore (via both brutal axe murders (self defense) and chest bursting a la Alien (which is the in-book comparison lol--see "genre-savvy protag")(admittedly this chest bursting subplot did feel very What The Hell Is This Fresh Bullshit, and not exactly cohesive with the rest of the story...not sure why that's in there lmao)).

Again: Quick read! Not super complicated or twisty, but it was a nice simple read after making it through THE BITCH QUEEN CHRONICLES, and I'm glad I read it for my own LRRH retelling reasons.

OoooOooOOOooo okay I'm gonna go with Courier Sara bc she's my original Courier and my poorest little babygirl, and off her playlist i shuffled The Spine Song by Cake Bake Betty and it's great because just so encompassing of her whole journey in the Mojave, while being such an abstract song lyrically by itself.

It talks about "dancing with men, going round and around" which I interpret as her power struggle with the people in power - Mr. House, Kimball, Caesar, and every other faction vying for control of the region. It talks of headaches which she gets from the TBI inflicted by getting shot twice in the head, it talks about substance abuse which I consider a part of her story in dealing with that trauma, and begging someone to let her say goodbye which calls to a backstory trauma I haven't talked about yet.

it's funny because this song actually kind of helped me shape her character. It ends with asking the listener if they'll use her spine after she's died to "swing from tree to tree in search of places pleasing to the eye" and I think THAT talks about a legacy she could set after she (spoilers) creates an independent New Vegas that will need something to rely on after she's gone, like how Caesar didn't seem to have a solid contingency plan for the event of his own death.

And the last line, calling her a "silly little girl" when a big part of her character is how young and naive she appears to be is just so chef's kiss. It's an integral song to her playlist, because lyrically it's accurate to her story and tonally it's beautiful and mournful and hopeful all at once, just like her.
