Rant about the fuckboy

ok this took a lot longer to answer than i thought but anyways MY SHSL CHEMIST IS SO GREASY and i have been DYING to talk about it

first of all he’s sexy. Yes. i can even admit that like gahlee he’s fine. he’s like six ft but boy he’s annoying like. i’m not saying he’s the type to use stupid chem pick up lines on you ( but he will if he finds out u like them ) but he is the type to be stupid flirty and it’s so funny

like for example i have an ultimate gyaru and he hits on her all the time but he stopped because she has no remorse and i’m like 80% sure he got bitch slapped but anywayz

he’s kind of a dickhead at times but his character development pretty much includes him opening up more instead of hiding behind shitty pick up lines </3 he’s an ultimate ( and an ultimate chemist at that ) but he still doesn’t think he’s all that but instead of Talking about it like a regular teenager he just brushes it off whenever anyone asks like Well, that’s for another time :) like HELLO open up u big baby

his name is yoshi ito and that might change but also i think that everybody compares him to the cute lil yoshi from mario even though he’s a big dude ( he’s actually just tall and a little lanky with broad shoulders HAHAA ) and he pretends to hate it..but he Loves affection he loves when ppl call him handsome ( AND CUTE TOO BUT HE HATES SAYING IT OUT LOUD. )

he’s actually super sweet and kind towards the end of the game ( altho i don’t see him surviving because i like to cause pain for myself ) despite him being kind of an asshole and distancing himself from other ppl he’ll come around eventually and everyone will love on him so much he short circuits </3

The Shiitake Hills and Drake Lands - D&D Super Mario: Races and Setting Notes

So after the Mario and Luigi posts I did before, I wanted to sort of expand on this loose concept of ‘Super Mario as a D&D Setting’ that I’ve had kicking around while I was suffering from chronic online college. :P

Now, this isn’t a coherent post, this is just a bunch of notes of how I’d convert the general concept of Super Mario games and some races. This would probably need full on World Anvil in order to turn these loose ideas and concepts into a proper campaign setting. And this is under the premise that my would-be players would be outsiders coming into this setting either by plane walking or by travel.

But, hey, if this can be used as a springboard for others to use for their own campaign, then be my guest! I wouldn’t put it here if I so badly wanted to keep this private! But this’ll be a long post, so continue at your own risk.

The Shiitake Hills are the stand in for the mushroom kingdom. These long rows of Hills are home to various farm lands and small villages. There’s very few cities. Mushrooms are mostly cultivated for the consumption and export-you’d be surprised how many recipes there are for cooked toadstools. But rest assured, mushrooms aren’t the only foodstuff you’ll find, but their cultivation for food and magical components is so common that even the most ignorant of school child or even someone who’s never even seen a mushroom would know how to cultivate enough edible fungus to never miss lunch.

The capital of this kingdom is Toadstool City, a glorious city. It’s not perfect, but magic is practiced in the open-it’s regulated, but not too restrictive and controlling. So long as your not raising the dead or raising a stink, you can practice most forms of magic in relative peace.

The Shiitake Hills were founded originally by Elven Druids, who had left their original home in order to escape prosecution from another clan of Druids. On their sailing across oceans, they’d come across a community of Halflings, whom were under the rule of a tyrannical wizard. The Head of these Elven Druids would take on these Halflings as fellow refugees.

This trip lasted 1000 years, with 800 of them spent with the Halfling survivors. Their culture would meld together, to the point where there was no way of knowing what custom originated from which group, but it mattered not. Both sides had developed a mutual relationship.

When The Shiitake Hills were founded the family of the Head Druid would lead colonization of the land. They would also introduce the various Elven Gods that the Druids worshiped.

Avus, God of Fatherhood, Life, and Light. A father should be a guiding light for the family. To be strong and nurturing. A father who is not in their child’s life is often struck by Avus.

Mater Goddess of Fertility, Birth, and Motherhood. Avus’s wife and the reason he gained the ‘Fatherhood’ title. Preying to her is often done when an Elf is about to give birth.

Natus God of Knowledge, Teaching, and Fire. His legends speak of him being the original cultivator of fire, and gifting his spark of knowledge down to the Elves who worship him and spread it. Knowledge is never to be hoarded, it’s to be spread and shared.

Frater God of Strength, War, and Courage. When thunder booms, it means he’s fighting and he wants his followers to also be prepared for the heat of battle. Never fear death, for only glory waits for those who races into battle! 

Soror Goddess of Sisterhood, Art, and Battle. The sister to Frater, she gives strength to her female followers to follow their dreams and passions, but to always have a knife at the ready to defend what’s yours.

Puer God of Tricksters, Brotherhood, and Nature. He teaches his followers to use nature to their advantage, to use ingenuity and wits to defeat larger foes, but to never use your trickery to back stab your brothers-in-arms.

Avanculus God of Wisdom, Harvest, and Water. Knowledge is knowing the best way to farm with new techniques. Wisdom is understand the old ways still work when they fail.

And the Matriarch of their Pantheon, Astrum, Goddess of the Sun, Moon, and Stars. 

But over the boarder of the hills is The Drake Lands. The land was originally a beautiful Dwarven Kingdom of glorious mountains. But then, two dragons razed the lands, a Red Dragon and a Green Dragon, who used the mountains as a battle field! Fire and Poisonous gas drove out the Dwarves underneath. The mountains burned and the poison killed almost all other life that didn’t escape. Nobody knows quite who won this fight, but whatever the result was, the two dragons eventually mated and had a child that would make the ruined lands their domain.

This Dragon is known as Oghoid, A Lawful Evil God of Conquest, Battle, and Gold. His descendants would be known as the Royal Clan who would turn these barren lands into a somewhat liveable place.

The Dwarves would’ve raced to the Shiitake Lands as refugees. The Elves and Halflings welcomed the Dwarves. They integrated into society, but their culture is still regularly practiced. Dwarves keep many Gods, but they had no trouble also incorporating the Elf’s-what’s 1 or 8 more to the pile? The Dwarves also brought expert stone cutting and construction. Many constructions are built mostly or even entirely by Dwarven hands.

Boy, that was a lot, but time to get into the Races. And please not that I’ll label them as ‘Good, Neutral, and Evil’ races for the sake of convenience. You can take a Good Race and play them evil and vice versa.

Good Races - The typical Good Guys and regular residents of the Shiitake Hills.

The Humans of the Super Mario series are split into 3 Types for the setting: Normal-Types, Mario-Types, and Princess-Types.

Normal-Types are the New Donk City citizens we see in Super Mario Odyssey. These are Humans, no doubt having come from various traders from outside of the kingdom and might’ve stayed and become full citizens.

Mario-Types are Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi-oddly proportioned humanoids. For this setting, they’re Dwarves-yes, even Waluigi. He’s just an oddly tall Dwarf. It happens. Meanwhile, Mario and Luigi are plumbers and have no trouble going underground and fixing things. 

And finally, Princess-Types. Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, and Pauline-oddly tall, and still have odd proportions, but look less like Mickey Mouse and more like Jessica Rabbit. They’re represented by Elves. Elves are usually in the upper class of Shiitake society.

Yes, they could all just be variant humans of some kind, but shush. :P This is suppose to be a big mass of races living on one continent and want to mix them all together.

Toads, if you couldn’t guess, are represented as Halflings. Why? Well, not only are they short, but what do we usually see Toads doing? We see them mostly in domestic roles, with only a few outliers. Halflings are mostly homely folk who want to be left in their homes and just enjoy their quaint lives.

Neutral Race - Not inherently Good Nor Bad, Just Folk

Yoshis in this setting will be played by Lizardfolk. I know that this is a pretty big stretch-Yoshis are cute and colorful and Lizardfolk are written as cold, calculating ‘survival of the fittest’ types. But I take the official text of WoTC as more like suggestions.

Evil Race - Typical Bad Guys and residents of The Drake Lands

So naturally, this sections will have Koopas, but how do we divide them? Well, I think there are 2 Types of Koopas. Regular Koopas and Koopa Rexes.

I percieve ‘Koopa Rex’ as essentially Bowser, his son, and the Koopalings-and maybe Boom-Boom and Pom-Pom, depending on how you see it. They would be Dragonborn.

Regular Koopas are essentially the rest. Koopa Troopas, Hammer Bros, Magikoopas, so on and so forth. They’re Tortles.

Okay, this is where I start to REALLY stretch the limits of what can be what...

Goombas will be classified as Kobolds. Why Kobolds? Well, honestly, I guess no real reason, but I think it makes sense for Bowser’s army to have the ‘Minion Races’ in the ranks.

Speaking of , Shy Guys are Kenkus in this setting.

And Boos, Goblins. Okay, this one, a bit of a stretch, but what do Boos do? They sneak up on you, right? Well, Goblins can use that tactic too!

Well, yeah, they could just be Ghosts. But, like, I hate using Ghosts in D&D. They’re too much of a pain in the ass to deal with. And, if you can’t tell, this isn’t meant to be a 1-to-1 thing. 

And finally, the Bob-Ombs are Warforged-possibly one that you could give the ability to ‘selfdestruct’ upon defeat or something.

And that’s about the end of my notes. This took, like, two hours to write but I wanted to put this all down somewhere and here it is. Nothing here is final and if you wanna use any of it for any reason, go right ahead~

I’ve done a couple of picrews for Nyima since she’s my favourite (shhhh don’t tell the others) but she’s hard to get right since she’s blue and there’s not a lot of options for that. 

@tiravi made a great piece of Nyima with her bf, Tundra, that I love to pieces and is the closest representation of how she looks. She so pretty They’re both characters in @illthdar‘s book series, first one, Illthdar: Guardians of Las, is out now ^=^

Moving onto my precious derps for Brotherhood! Oh, have I got pretties for them! I’m not good with graphics and stuff. They end up looking clunky a lot of the time, but I love how this set turned out so I use them as title cards for extracts. Each one has the main couple, but they’re not the only ocs I’ve got. I’ve got sosososososo many! I have a whole file dedicated to profiles for this bunch of dorks lool

First up, Divinely Volatile!

Ryang Ji-hoon and Fen Yueliang. Ji-hoon does actually look at lot like Choi Siwon who is his face claim, so much so that he gets mistaken for him a lot of the time. It’s a running joke since he’s an assassin and being recognised in any respect is bad for business, but he’s too vain to change his face. He has black hair and warm brown eyes that always look a little regretful.Yueliang has long straight black hair and darker brown eyes than Ji-hoon. She looks sharp and definitely is, but she’s also kind and a bit of a leap before she looks person, but luckily the amount of army training she’s had saves her from most disasters.

Next book planned is Deadly Lineage.

Ambrose Fewtree and Vera Ucci. Ambrose is meant to look nondescript and forgettable because that’s how he operates best. He has reddish hair and grey/green eyes and he’s 5′11 and slender. His name is the most standout thing about him and even then most people forget it seconds after he leaves. And that includes the prosthetic left arm. Yup, he has a prosthetic because shit happens even to them. It’s super neat though with lots of hidden compartments for poisons, and he has more than one and wears them like fashion accessories. He’s a Bulgarian Romani and speaks a ton of languages - second only to Utamara Ndiaye.Vera has silver screen looks and a figure to match, which doesn’t fit in the age of instagram and contouring. She’s 5′4 with reddish brown hair that she hates because what even is that colour called? And she has hazel eyes. She’s Sardinian by blood, but grew up in Terni, Italy. (She’s also a princess, but more of that another time.)

Next up is Cold Snap.

Tan Shun & Sarnai Ramchaa. Tan Shun knows he’s handsome and well dressed and also lethal af. He’s the Brotherhood’s best assassin and never puts a foot out of line. His father was a first generation Brotherhood, meaning he was born into it. The head of the Brotherhood, Hisakawa Kagegorou actually adopted Shun as his son because he was close to his father and thought Shun would have maximum potential. He does. He’s not the only adopted child of Kagegorou’s, but he’s the one he holds up to the others as an example. He’s 5′9 and wears lifts in his shoes to make himself taller. He’s got short black hair and obsidian coloured eyes.Sarnai is Mongolian and a photojournalist. She’s tough and no nonsense, but also fun and a bit reckless. She’s not the most beautiful woman around, but she’s got a certain something that attracts people to her. She’s 5′8 with fluffy black hair and greyish eyes.

Next up, Scorched Desire.

Mohammed al Sadat & Sorcha Dunaid. Mo is from Egypt and he’s the most charming person ever. The scars on his face claim’s face are also present on his, but for different reasons, and they don’t damage his appeal one bit! He likes to say he’s the Egyptian James Bond, only better because he has a 100% success rate. He’s got neatly cropped black hair and deep brown eyes.Sorcha’s Scottish, with red hair and brown eyes, very pale skin and tall. She looks like a model - and used to be one - but she’s got so much intelligence and wicked wit that anyone who underestimates her regrets it.

Next up is Heavenly Kodachi!

Hisakawa Tadamasa & Aurora McCabb. Tada’s Japanese and at 26 the youngest son of Hisakawa Kagegorou. He wears his black hair slicked back, but often loses control over it by the end of the day - has a habit of running his hands through it without realising. He has very dark brown eyes that look almost black and he’s short at 5′8, but isn’t vain enough to wear lifts like Shun.Aurora (Rory) is Native American, has tanned skin and short black hair that she bleaches and then dyes bright pink because pink. Her eyes are grey and she’s always very cheerful and happy, even when she’s not.

Hisakawa Yoshihiro & Ina Howell. Yoshi is Tada’s older brother and far more neatly presented than his mess of a brother. His short black hair never misbehaves, and his obsidian eyes are always partially concealed by black framed glasses. He looks like a teacher - technically he is. He’s 5′9 and slender, like all the Hisakawa family.Ina hails from Wales, has milky-toned skin, mid-brown shoulder-length hair and blue eyes. She’s a doctor researching genetic diseases at a teaching and research hospital in Seattle. 

Last but not least!Smudged Iron

Calum McCabb & Glenn Oake. Calum isn’t an assassin, unlike all the other guys so far. He’s Aurora’s older brother, so he’s also Native American. His skin tone is darker than his sister’s, he has very long black hair that he plaits when he’s working, and grey eyes. He’s 5′10, broad and muscular from manual labour he does helping out on his family’s property and business or just from working out.Glenn is the only female assassin main character (there’s other minor ones). She’s got long, ginger hair, green eyes, pale skin and freckled. She’s tall and gangly looking and can pass for a boy if she makes an effort - it comes in handy.

Relationship:

I’ll start this off by explaining the type of girl he would fall for because the love of my life has very specific tastes (but please know that he would fall for almost anyone, but what I’m about to explain is the type of girl he seeks out):

Okay, so physically, Tsuyoshi likes himself short girls. Yes, I know it’s such a cliche to have a tall man with a short girl but he can’t help himself. He thinks they are so cute and he loves the contrast of their heights. He likes the fact that he can just pick you up when he wants to hug you or kiss you and it absolutely drives him crazy when he holds your hand. It’s so small compared to his and he loves that his hand can clasp around your entire hand. It makes butterflies flutter in his stomach.

He also likes girls that are in the cute category. Once again, it’s a cliche but I will not change my mind on this. Girls with wide eyes, chubby cheeks, sweet smiles, and soft looking features are his weakness. This man would honestly fall to his knees in front of any girl like this because he just can’t handle how cute they are.

Im terms of personality, he loves a girl that has a sort of innocent and motherly kind of nature. There is a lot going on in Tsuyoshi’s  life which causes him a lot of stress. Being a captain of a school team as well as being a third year prepping for exams can really put a lot on his shoulders and he would love to have a girlfriend that would be able to help him relieve some of that stress and take some of his daily duties off his shoulders. Things like coming to help him with his chores, helping him study, giving him gentle reminders of when to take a break or go to sleep, helping him with his meal prep and schedule for sumo would be something he would absolutely love his girlfriend for.

He is also a sucker for innocent girls or at least innocent looking. In addition to wanting to be taken care of, he wants to be able to protect his girlfriend and having them look so innocent makes his drive to protect her even stronger. He would never let any harm befall his girlfriend and if she was ever in danger, he would be there for her as fast as he could.

Honestly, he would even beat up any person that dared to cause his girlfriend mild discomfort. You don’t mess with his girl and get away with it, okay?

Now onto some general relationship headcanons:

There is honestly nothing this man wouldn’t do for you if it meant seeing you smile. He would walk to the ends of the earth for you if it meant it would bring a smile on to your face. Whenever you’re feeling down, you can always expect him to come to your house with bundles of sweet goodies, teddy bears, and kisses to make you feel better. He’s just such a sweet boy.

He’s very protective of you too. He doesn’t want anything bad happening to you at any point and will always go out of his way to make sure that you are safe. He even formed a protection squad for you comprised of all the first years of the sumo club and some other delinquents from his school. They escort you home when Tsuyoshi can’t do so himself, they watch out for you when you’re out with your friends in a sketchy looking neighborhood and they even come to your house to help you make dinner from time to time because eventually they are going to become your ‘sons’

To be honest, you’ll end up as he mother of the sumo club and no one questions it. They all call you mother and treat you with the utmost respect.

He is kind of shy around you but trust me when I say that it’s so adorable. Like in the beginning of your relationship he gets so flustered by the smallest things that you do. If you laugh at a joke he made, his cheeks will turn a bright pink and he’ll try to look away from you so that you won’t be able to see it but you would have spotted it and it’s just… so cute. If you tease him at all about it, he’ll just stutter and fumble around his words, only making him cuter.

He is such a sweet boyfriend. Like I know I already said this but it’s fucking true. Even though he looks like he could fucking kill you with his bare hands, Tsuyoshi is an absolute teddy bear and only ever wants to see you smiling and happy. Home boy honestly loves for your smile and if anything ever made you sad, he would be right there to help bring a smile back onto your face.

There is honestly nothing this man wouldn’t do for you if it meant seeing you smile. He would walk to the ends of the earth for you if it meant it would bring a smile on to your face. He is also very much a gentleman. He treats you with the utmost respect and care and won’t let you waste your precious energy on anything if he has the power or opportunity to do it for you. So things like opening doors for you, pushing in your chair, paying for food, fixing your sink, or wiping your tears away when you cry are all the hints he will and wants to do for you. You are his everything and there is nothing that is going to stop him from providing for you. 

Now it’s canon that Tsuyoshi is a shy boyo. He gets flustered around women pretty easily and has a hard time talking them and when it comes to his girlfriend, he’s even more so, especially when it comes to forms of affection during the beginning of your relationship. He is afraid that he might hurt you or make you uncomfortable because his hands are so big and usually just waits for you to initiate any kind of physical affection because he just has too many worries when it comes to being the one to touch you first.

However, as your relationship progresses, he’ll be a little more forward and begin to imitate forms of affection first. He’d start off with simple hand holding or letting you latch onto his arm as you both walk together or sit beside each other. There is nothing this man loves more than just having you close to him and he’s always dreamed about you holding his hand and having it actually become a reality just makes him so happy. Eventually he will become a lot more comfortable with touching you and will go for bolder approaches to affection like kissing you, hugging you, and just overall touching you.

But honestly he’s a Slut holding your hand and kissing your forehead though. The gesture is just so soft and innocent and intimate and he just lives for it. He also just loves playing with your fingers randomly, comparing them to his and intertwining them and planting soft kisses on them. Compared to his, your hands and fingers are just so dainty and cute and he can’t help but admire them any chance he gets.

Actually, this guy just likes touching you in general. Tsuyoshi is he type of man that will want to be around you 24/7 because he just loves you so much and always wants to know that you’re doing well. Wherever you go, he will always have some part of him touching you, but like I said, holding your hand is his favorite thing to do. Other than that, it’s having an arm around your waist or linking your arms together when you’re walking.

He gets you flowers every other day with the cutest little hand written card that reminds you of how much he loves. Each bouquet of flowers he gets you always has a meaning to it and a card to match (even though his handwriting is a little sloppy). One day you’ll get a bouquet of Arbutus flowers to show that he loves only you with a heartfelt letter going into detail as to why he loves you. The next day you’ll get a bouquet of daffodils to show his desire to love you and how he wants to show affection at any given moment with yet another letter going into detail. However, the flowers he loves getting you most often are roses. It’s pretty cliche but he thinks they’re just as beautiful as you and they are such a universal symbol of love, though he never gets you them in a bouquet. It’s only ever a single rose and he always gives them to you in person along with a sweet kiss.

My husband is super sweet and cute, alright.

He’s the type of boyfriend that will take as long as it needs to understand you and how you’re feeling. The last thing he’ll get want is for you to be upset and will let you take your anger out on him if need be. He’ll sit with you for as long as you need, letting you rant to him and tell him exactly why you’re upset. If it has nothing to do with anger or sadness and you just want to talk to him about something that you’re not comfortable with or familiar with, he will be all ears for you. He wants to be someone you can go to to talk about anything, grounding you and keeping you comfortable and safe.

He’s also the type of boyfriend to do the most ridiculous or mundane things for you when you’re on your period. He will go to hell and back to get you something that probably doesn’t even exist because you mentioned it in your sleep or something. Yoshi just wants you to be comfortable and feel little to no pain when you’re on your period. If you need something to punch because your cramps are too much to handle, go ahead and punch him. He doesn’t mind. He would even suggest it. If you need to cry, he has two free shoulders for you to cry on as well as a vacant lap that you can sit on to cuddle up to him if you need. He’s just very accommodating and understands that what you are going through is painful and will do all that he can to help. If there is stuff he doesn’t know, you bet he’s going to do research if you complain about something he doesn’t quite understand.

Loves having you nap with him!!! Like listen, this man is the softest and warmest person on his team and cuddling with him is like a dream. After he’s eaten his chanko and it’s time for a nap, he’ll call you over just so he can have you in his arms, sleeping peacefully cuddled to his chest. It’s honestly the cutest thing waking up to him because he does that sucky thing in his sleep. Yunno what I’m talking about? Babies do it in their sleep when they don’t have a pacifier and they’re just sucking on their tongue or lower lip. Yoshi does that and it’s just so heart melting seeing him do it. (Though he will deny it if you ever bring it up)

Lunch dates are a must. Almost all your dates happen during lunch, whether or at school or otherwise. He is usually the one to make lunch and then take a bus or train over to your school and eat with you. He is a very good cook and always makes you your favorite foods and desserts and feels such a great sense of pride when you compliment his work.

Oof. Our Future

GERIJAH: A TRAGIC LOVE STORY?

Now as a Valentine gift for all of you, a brief look into Gerijah! Happy Valentine’s Day and a special shoutout to @selene-yoshi-chan, @cartoonobsessionsyndrome, @welcome-to-cobblepothell, @multi-villain-imagines and @jokesterwrites

Despite the fact that they share no airtime, she never mentions him and he’s only in 2 episodes, I believe that I can prove that Gertrud Kapelput and Elijah Van Dahl is one of the deepest, loving and complex couples in the history of FOX’s Gotham, using only examples from the show and well-formed thoughts.

For me, Gerijah first became a thing in the middle of Elijah’s first episode. There is a scene where Elijah is serving Oswald a meal and telling his son about his past with Gertrud where is his body language, the way he stared off into the distance as he called Gertrud ‘so beautiful’, and he broke down at the thought of his parents separated them that it first dawned on me. This wasn’t just a guy recalling good times, this was a man telling a story about a woman he was still very much in love with. This seems even truer when Elijah tells how he meets his wife, Grace, in a much more matter-of-fact, less emotional way than his Gertrud story. In fact, proof that Elijah loves Gertrud comes with his very first entrance. He appeared as edger and nervous as a schoolboy going on a date, when he comes to put flowers on her grave. Old flowers are already there, suggesting that he has already been there before, (or the flowers could be put there by Ed, as per Oswald’s request) and it’s unusual for a rich man to place flowers on a servant’s grave or for a married man to do so for a ex-girlfriend, unless, of course, the dead still meant something very special. With the line, ‘Gertrud was a cook that worked for my parents,’ not ‘for us’ or ‘for the family’, it is possible that Elijah never saw Gertrud as a servant but more as a equal, a friend, a lover, a girlfriend or even a wife. Granted, we never got a timeframe for Gertrud and Elijah’s relationship but there’s one more clue that points it to being extremely serious. When Elijah meets Oswald for the first time, all he needs to know is 2 things, only 2 pieces of information, that his mother is Gertrud and that he’s 32, that’s it. Elijah   never even questions that Oswald is not his son, again. This certainty and the intensity of his feelings for Gertrud prove that it wasn’t a one-night stand or a casual fling. These were 2 people in love and were sexually faithful to one other. But if Elijah loved Gertrud so much, why didn’t he go after her? I’m not so sure he didn’t. Yes, Elijah tearfully admitted he was ashamed that he didn’t at least try to contact Gertrud when his parents forced Gertrud to flee the mansion but earlier in that same show, Elijah said that he ‘only found her in death, I afriad’, that quote implies that he HAD tried to find her in life but was unsuccessful. Regardless, by his own admission, life without Gertrud is pretty bleak for Elijah. His father commits suicide in his office, leaving deep mental scars on Elijah, leading to behavior such as sleepwalking and sometime later, his mother also dies. Elijah said that after his mother’s death he barely got out of bed for months at a time. This is classic behavior for someone who has depression and after losing both his parents along with Gertrud, why shouldn’t poor Elijah be depressed? In such a state, a lonely, depressed, heartbroken, single millionaire would be quite easy prey for a gold digger, enter Grace. We know next to nothing about Grace and her children’s lives before they met Elijah. It is mentioned that Grace’s first husband was abusive. (Given that Grace is a skilled liar and the fact the woman never acts like a victim, the abusive husband could be a tall tale meant to gain sympathy from a compassionate Elijah. But as this is a one-time comment it’s impossible to prove one way or the other.) Something we do for a fact is that Grace is not born one of Gotham’s upper crust. When she met Elijah, Grace was a waitress. She had the same kind of blue-collar life that Gertrud had. Despite the fact that Elijah said that ‘love blossomed’ between him and Grace after he took her and her kids into his home, there is no proof that Grace ever liked, loved or even respected her husband. Make no mistake, my friends, there is no great love story between Elijah and Grace. Still, there had to be something between the two at some point right?  After all, they got all the way to the altar, so they had to have some kind of deep connection? Well, yes and no. As someone who has given this a lot of (okay, maybe too much) thought, I came up with 3 possible reasons as for why Elijah would marry Grace. As I’ve already mentioned, Grace was a waitress when she and Elijah first met. A waitress is similar to Gertrud’s profession as a cook, leading me to believe that Elijah’s feelings for Grace could had been a transference of the love he still had for Gertrud, playing up the parallels between the 2 women and ignoring the many differences. Another school of thoughts is shortly after being taken into the mansion to get away from her abusive ex, Grace sets out to seduce Elijah, (i.e. sex). Elijah doesn’t seem like the love ‘em and leave ‘em type, so after sleeping together, Elijah develops a crush on Grace, which he mistakes for real love. Or perhaps the attraction is not Grace or rather not Grace alone. It could be her children. Elijah did say that after the kids moved in, ‘this halls heard laughter once again.’ The prospect of becoming a family unit with Grace, Sasha and Charles would be alluring to a lonely bachelor like Elijah. The fact that Sasha and Charles carry the Van Dahl surnames rather than real father’s supports this theory. If Elijah’s motives for marrying Grace are unclear, Grace’s are crystal: his money. Whatever got them to the wedding, at some point; the marriage breaks down (if it ever worked at all). Maybe Elijah finally realizes it takes more than sex to make a marriage or it finally dawns on him that Grace isn’t Gertrud or perhaps when the kids got older, Elijah finds there’s not much between him and Grace as a couple. Elijah goes back to his memories of Gertrud. By the time Oswald appears, the marriage is dead. The terms of affection like ‘dear’ now seems like forced polite conversation and they sleep in different rooms.

So I think I proved that Elijah loves Gertrud but did Gertrud love Elijah? I believe she did, but if Elijah’s love is proved in words, Gertrud’s are proved by actions. Elijah tells Oswald that all he was told that his parents and Gertrud ‘came to an arrangement.’ This almost always means that Gertrud was offered a large amount of money to stay away from Elijah. But given her faded clothes and tiny apartment that we saw in season 1 plus Oswald saying that ‘they didn’t have much’ when he was growing up, it’s pretty safe to say that she didn’t take the money, proving that she wasn’t the gold digger the Van Dahls thought she was and that she truly loved Elijah. While she didn’t take the money, she did agree to go away. Why? First off, she was probably worried about Elijah himself

We are never told when Elijah got his bad heart but if he was sickly in his youth as he is later on plus his lack of experience with the city, he was home-schooled after all, Gertrud was likely worried if Elijah left the mansion, his health would get worse. By this time, Gertrud was pregnant. The fact that Oswald was the same age as when Gertrud left the mansion leads me to believe that she was a few months along. Elijah’s health could also be the reason Gertrud never told him about the pregnancy. He has already threatened to run away with her even without a baby in the picture, if he knew about the   baby, there would be no way he would leave Gertrud’s side. A lesser woman would have viewed a pregnancy as an   answer to prayer. She could of used the baby to trap Elijah into marriage. Gotham producers have always described Gerturd ‘as a proud but faded beauty’. It’s the proud part that interests me. No proud woman in love would want a shotgun wedding with disapproving in-laws. I believe that Gertrud didn’t tell her employers for a different reason, she doesn’t trust them. After all, this is the couple that tried to buy her off, believe she is good enough for their son, so why would she be good enough for their grandchild? So Gertrud left the mansion and Elijah with   her secret intact. So Gertrud is unmarried, pregnant, jobless, and if her job was live-in, homeless. Gertrud probably moved in to a poor neighborhood into the city and works at a new job. Gertrud was just as heartbroken as Elijah but unlike Elijah who has nothing to do but mope around the mansion and wonder what went wrong, Gertrud is busy trying to build a new life for herself and for her unborn child. As we all know, Gertrud carried her baby to term and untimely gave birth to a son, who looked a lot like his father. Oswald becomes his mother’s entire world. By all accounts, Gertrud is an outstanding mother. Yes, she does lie and tell Oswald his father was dead but I don’t think she did it out of spite or bitterness but out of a need to protect a little boy against the idea that his own family might not think him good enough. As an awkward and bullied boy, the only place that Oswald feels completely safe, secured and loved was with his mother. The bond between mother and son is so strong that after Gertrud’s death, Oswald often finds himself lost without her. If lovingly tending to their son is not enough to convince you that Gertrud loved Elijah, how about the fact that is likely that Gertrud NEVER married. This is not canon, no one on the show said Gertrud never married, but all the pieces are there. Yes, she was the widow of Oswald’s dead father, which makes Oswald (and her) look better. Since he is not the type to do something without his parent’s permission, it’s unlikely that people address her as Mrs. Kapelput or Cobblepot, but this could be that she told people Gertrud and Elijah were ever legally married and Oswald recalls his youth often but has never once mentioned a stepfather. The bond between mother and son wouldn’t be as strong if there had been a husband/ boyfriend in the picture vying for Gertrud’s time and attention. It’s not hard at all to see Gertrud as a working, single mother who had no time or will to date. Also, Kapelput was the only name on her tombstone leading me to believe that Gertrud simply put Mrs. in front of her own maiden name. If Gertrud never truly got over Elijah, then it must of hurt a lot when she heard that he married and seemingly move on. And since they all live in the same area, it’s likely she did know about Grace and the kids. At the start of Gotham, Gertrud comes off as an overprotective and overbearing mother and in a way, she is. The older Oswald gets, the less and less control Gertrud has over where he goes. I believe Gertrud is terrified of losing Oswald, but not to a hussy, as she claims. No, she is afraid that one day Oswald is going to bump into his father or stepfamily, exposing the lies that she had told him his whole life, causing her son to reject her. When Oswald and Elijah do meet, it’s in a graveyard and where both are grieving for the recently deceased Gertrud. By taking in and caring for Oswald, Elijah may be trying to redeem himself. By embracing their son with open arms, Elijah might be trying to prove his love for Gertrud, to show he’s worthy of a 2nd chance, if only to their child. As Oswald (and Gertrud) come to the forefront of Elijah’s mind, Grace and the kids are pushed to the side, a little. It’s ironic that Grace’s cruelest deed turns out to be kindness. For only by dying, can Elijah be reunited with Gertrud.

What makes Elijah and Gertrud a tragic couple is that their parting was completely avoidable! Both are equally to blame. If Elijah had simply stood up to his parents, he could have raised his son. If Gertrud trusted Elijah with the news of her pregnancy, she could have her baby and the man she loved. Still, even in death, Gerijah has a small justice. If the Van Dahl dynasty continued, it will have to be by Elijah’s ‘only living relative’ Oswald…and Gertrud’s bloodline.
