INITIAL THOUGHTS ON ARCANE SEASON 2 ACT 1 (EPISODES 1-3)

(i’m not good at putting my thoughts into words so feel free to give your own opinions, i rlly wanna hear them)

ok so my biggest critique is the pacing. everything is very quick very fast and a lot is going on. i understand that this is immediately after a large event which of course caused a reaction however it was just very intense and a lot to keep up with especially considering the amount of new and confusing things introduced throughout the three episodes with minimal slow down. it was alittle difficult to keep up. the timeline of the show is confusing and i have no idea how long it has been between scenes. viktor was barely in that weird healing chamber for a few scenes before he was emerging as someone new. caitlyn and vi were going from loving to fighting to understanding to fighting again very quickly with little time to develop independently, their kiss and divorce weren’t even 30 minutes apart from each other. also, who the fuck is this kid hanging around with jinx?? why is she following her, why doesn’t she talk, what’s her name, how long has she been with her?? this lack of time to let things develop has caused these episodes to feel rushed.

with this introduction of many new things some have left me with a lot of questions. my biggest issue revolves around the arcane. i literally do not recall it being mentioned or being an important topic in s1 but all of a sudden jayce knows a fuck ton about it as well as heimerdinger? when did he learn this? i assume it’s from viktors notes and research but that still fails to cover the amount of knowledge jayce now possesses.

HOWEVER THE ARCANE IS VERY COOL AND IM VERY VERY INVESTED. i absolutely love the changes to viktor, his weird apathy and changes are definitely rushed but so interesting to see, his design and behaviour are so very compelling and im very excited to see the development. additionally, this group dynamic between jayce, ekko and heimerdinger is soooooo fun. it offers a break from the intensity with some silliness i think is desperately needed, plus it’s super satisfying to see the trio bounce off each other. that final scene of them in ep3 was visually incredible and i loved seeing the effects upon the hextech weapons during the jinx, sevika vs vi, caitlyn fight. the scene of viktor amongst the shimmer infected was very interesting and it was so cool to truly see the severe effects of shimmer and the inhumanity of viktor is making a clear route towards his glorious evolution which is am keen to watch.

that ambessa reveal at the end was INCREDIBLE. i genuinely didn’t see it coming and it made my jaw DROP. the quiet, smart suspicion from mel is always incredible to see, her political mind and morals conflicting is so very engaging and she’s really developing into herself in these episodes which was a joy to witness. the mystery of her brother is compelling and links well through s1 and s2 to make the storyline fun to follow. i also simply must compliment the designs revolving around the noxians and animal-esque (sorry idk what they’re called) people. the absolute variety and inspiration from real life cultures is beautiful to see. i am incredibly confused about the magic and that one lady (amara?) but i assume that’ll be answered in later episodes.

jinx is not looking good lmao. i love her design being so corpse-like and deathly, it really fits well and really embraces the differences between powder and jinx. but i do wish we saw more of her. i see her actions but i lack understanding for some of them, primarily revolving around the child (isha?) and why the kids even there but the newfound bond between sevika and jinx is refreshing to see. the scene of them in silcos old office brought a smile to my face and the design of that fucking arm is soooo cool i love the clownish purely jinx vibe to it.

caitlyn is probably the stand out character so far (plus maybe viktor). her absolute grief and seeing her facade break down throughout the episodes was heartbreaking, the tentative yet conflicting moments of softness with vi were beautiful yet had that perfect undercurrent of tragedy that arcane masters so well. her rage and break up with vi was easy to see coming yet so incredibly jarring to watch, that harsh and merciless behaviour is so different from s1, the development is well done and a morbid pleasure to see. and that final episode. oh my. the shock to acceptance of darkness was fantastic, ambessa truly is a master at manipulating weakness in even the strongest of people and seeing this duo is going to be so soul crushing that i’m itching for more.

vi felt very rushed to me and alittle dry? idk why tho i can’t really explain it. i understand her choices but it felt like something was missing until that final scene with cait. that was an absolute masterpiece. seeing her realising that the horrors of war is corrupting everyone around her and pleading for it to please not happen is so so SO fucking sad and my heart was breaking. i loved seeing her moral strength and solidity to her values which has always been a key part of her character so i appreciate the consistency. idk why something about her was just… different.

the opening scene was incredible. the absolute horror of it was so clear and i was literally shaking the entire time. 10/10 opening.

overall, i hope things slow down alittle but i greatly enjoyed season 2 and im very excited to see the characters develop and to see even more of this beautiful world.

I wanted to quickly write out my feelings/thoughts on the song in Arcane’s new teaser trailer.

It could just be trailer music, but I believe Arcane Season 1’s trailer used Dirty Little Animals; so, it doesn’t seem farfetched to say this song will be in Season 2.

I just really loved the song.

It fit with what we see in the trailer as well as certain things I want for S2.

The music has a religious quality to it, not so much it’s like a hymn but with the chanting or choir, it feels very much – invoking a bigger force than one’s self, a calling to something bigger.

I also love that it's children singing, because again, the vibe I'm getting is a calling of arms.

Piltover abandoned Zaun’s children and while we’re obviously not going to only see children fighting Piltover; we are going to see a lot of young people going against Piltover or fighting for Zaun.

Which shows the true power imbalance and the injustice of it all. Piltover might think they’re doing what’s right and acting in the name of justice, but they’re just doing what they’ve always done -

They're putting the Undercity back in its place, back in the ground where they belong, because how dare they think they can attack them. How dare they start a war unprovoked.

The thing is, they're not just fighting evil chembarons or scary chem-tanks; but innocent people as well who have every right to hate and distrust them.

I can imagine there being a scene of someone (Caitlyn being very likely) telling people that Jinx is lying to them and this is all because of her...

But they're not going to reach a single person.

I also doubt Jinx is going to lie or really go out of her way to be anyone’s icon. Most likely she’s just going to be Jinx and look whether or not people should look to her as a savior, is certainly a valid discussion, but not one Piltover gets to have any say in. Because yeah, of course people would look to Jinx; she hurt Piltover.

The trailer is very much in the vein of Piltover and Noxus going against Zaun, taking a stand against them (against tyranny... okay Jan), gathering their forces, and all that...

But this time, it won't be the same.

With the vibes the song is giving, Jinx being this icon of liberation, and just who Jinx is in general – they’re not prepared for Jinx and Zaun. Ambessa is not prepared for Jinx or Zaun. Heimerdinger is not prepared for Jinx.

Caitlyn and Vi might be... but I sense some friction between those two is going to arise from that.

And yeah, the music just gives all of those vibes to me and is invoking so many thoughts.

Plus, music is so integral to Zaun, in a way that it’s not to Piltover. It’s everywhere. All the soundtrack’s songs (lyrics) are focused on Zaun characters or in Zaun scenes. The first scene is Powder singing clearly a folk song of sort, that’s all about asking Piltover for something as small as a penny and now, they're tired of asking.

Jinx didn't start this war. Piltover did.

Excuse my ramblings, I just really liked the song and it was just fitting with what I thought or hoped would happen. I could be completely wrong about all of this, but either way I’m super excited.

If they actually do “Jayce has been stuck in a time loop” in Arcane Act 3, once I’ve stopped screaming, expect a meta breakdown (AND a mental breakdown) of the elements of Puella Magi Madoka Magica influence I’ve been noticing around the edges of Arcane S2.

I haven’t been quite able to put my finger on it until after Act 2 dropped, but the use of certain textures like when the Wild Rune went nuts in 2.03 reminded me of the animation in Madoka (also Spiderverse of course), and there’s also the Shurima choral rift in To Ashes and Blood which definitely invoked the Madoka soundtrack song “Magia” for me, and of course, if Jayce did show up looking like a bad guy because he’s the only one who knows about the future they need to prevent, that would be a plot arc straight out of Homura’s arc in Madoka. They even share some themes already, specifically the Arcane themes stated by Singed and Viktor in Act 2 that humanity’s love for one another is what drives their greatest atrocities.

I’m still doing my level best (which is not very good) not to get too excited about a theory that hasn’t been proven yet. But Madoka Magica was also a massively influential animated work in recent years so it wouldn’t be crazy if it had an impact on the Arcane creators. And it might be my top favorite take on time loops, how a normal person becomes a chosen one, that I’ve ever seen. So if the parallels do pan out I will probably combust with joy?

I am SO sad about S2 being it for Arcane. I'm guessing the season will bring us to League canon, allowing the characters to evolve into their League counterparts and ending there. Which breaks my heart, because that means we'll get the Divorce Era but we'll never get to see Jayvik making amends. I had really hoped that Arcane would take the story further than what's in League lore and we'd get a couple seasons of Viktor and Jayce as enemies but then maybe a final season of them mending their relationship. Alexa, plat Rolling in the Deep 😭

I too am really sad that it’s only 2 seasons of Piltover/Zaun. They’re my favorite regions by far, with all of my favorite characters. I know that the show takes a LOT of resources, both time and money, and that they are excited to go elsewhere in Runeterra. And I fell in love with the characters due to the show, so I’m sure I will love whatever they give us next. (I’m assuming it will have a different name, because Arcane was meant to encompass this specific region. Although I would argue, since magic is so prevalent throughout their world, that every new region could be called Arcane and then just have a subtitle. That way you keep the association to the award-winning show and keep the general audience following who don’t realize that this is just the end for this region, not this world.)

That said, I’m both sad and tentatively excited for an open end to Jayce and Viktor’s story. Like yes, it would be a dream come true to see a canon reconciliation of some kind between them. However, that kinda cements one path that they can take, and limits what fan creators can do with them afterward (at least canon-compliant creators like myself). Personally, I’d be okay with an open end. That means all of us can go nuts with what happens next, and all of us are right. That gives me endless possibilities to write their messy, complicated, love-hate-anger-grief story as it progresses. I just really hope neither of them are killed off. And I’m not just saying that because they’re my favs, I just… I think they’ve done Viktor dirty in the past (*cough* Convergence *cough*) and it’s about time his character was done some justice. And what would be the message behind showing us the absolute hell Viktor goes through in order to live, only to kill him off. You can’t run away from death? We fucking know that, we see it every day in the real world, and we don’t need to be reminded. Show me something I haven’t seen before. Show me that you can outrun death, but it comes at a cost. Show me that you might regret that cost, but there’s no going back, so now you have to come to terms with what you’ve done. Show me the agonizing and painstaking process of learning to forgive yourself.

second, this is kinda weird but i just joined the arcane fandom not too long ago, & it was literally only because i saw vijinx art. like all of my mutuals are into arcane & i never bothered to get into it UNTIL i saw fanart of vijinx a few months ago. something abt it just intrigued me. i honestly never cared for caitvi.

however i wouldn’t consider myself a pro shipper, in fact i’d deny that. this is the first time i’ve enjoyed anything like this & i have no idea why. however i do like hardcore dynamics, for example, ellie/abby from tlou. but of course something like vi/jinx is more “extreme”. well in my opinion.

i’m coming to you because i’ve been stalking a lot of vijinx shippers and i really admire their content, especially yours. it’s such a guilty pleasure of mine. but i’m too scared to interact with anyone, even on an alt. so i just decided to stay anonymous.

i was just wondering if you ever felt guilty the first time you started shipping them? i’d honestly envy you if you haven’t. and how & why did you start shipping them? feel free to rant abt them for as long as you’d like.

i’ve been hearing stuff abt how they weren’t always sisters, like in the early league days. i wish it just stayed that way because it bothers me to not be able to talk abt my favorite ships publicly without being ridiculed for it. but a fucked up part of me is glad that they became sisters. holds more weight, you know. i understand the appeal entirely.

i’ve also even been secretly drawing them but i definitely do not have the balls to post them anywhere😭

I got a little rambly in my answer there, so I'll put it under the cut.

Honestly, I only call myself a 'proshipper' because this is what modern fandom lingo dictates. I don't really gel with a lot of elements of 'proshipdom', if you will -- there seems to be some broad agreement that if you like Some messed up aspects in your fiction, you must like All of them. And I really don't! I ship ViJinx because I love their specific dynamic, not just because I'm hot for every taboo topic by default. I probably would've shipped them just as much if the show had just made them close childhood friends, for example. But I also have no issue with fictional incest ships, I think they can be fun and juicy.

Like you, I've always been really drawn to problematic and intense lesbian relationships. I like CaitVi plenty, and I think they're going to get a lot messier in S2, which I'm excited for. But ViJinx is just an insanely compelling dynamic. I love the toxic codependent yuri shit. I love the tenderness and the violence, their shared past that now feels completely inaccessible to them both, Jinx's obsessiveness, Vi refusing to give up the image of Powder she's clung on to for years... man, this shit just rocks, okay. I'm not gonna pretend that it doesn't.

I've never felt any guilt about shipping ViJinx, tbh. I'm a fandom oldbie, by which I mean I was around before the morality police took over, and everyone understood we were just here to mash Barbies and have a good time. I've shipped several incest pairings before this, and I've always had a blast doing it. And so help me god, I don't intend to stop now, even if my Twitter blocklist is twenty miles long. I just immediately cut out anyone who tries to start shit, and chill with my fellow weirdos. It's a pretty small circle, but it's a nice time!

So many things!!! Genuinely, one of the ways i keep myself going is finding things to look forward to, both in the short term and the long(er) term.

So! I’m excited for season 2 of Arcane in november!!! I’m excited to watch s3 of Traitors US with friends when it drops in july, right alongside s2 of the reboot of The Mole! I’m excited for the Trimax rerelease Whenever That Happens, and I cannot Wait for the Tristamp s2 announcement.

But alao! Excited for dnd on friday :^] and my geranium has another cluster of flower buds blooming atm, so I’m real excited to see all of those pop!!!! Same with Midval; he’s got two or three little leaves that’re in the process of unfurling, and it’s always exciting to watch new leaves do their thing!!!

god there's just so much im excited for for arcane s2. i'm really just going in with an open mind and seeking a nice resolution for the story, whether it ends "badly" or not. i think people can get caught up in stories having good endings, which i dont think is gonna be the case for arcane. if anything, i want it to rip out my heart and stomp on it.

What I’m Expecting from Arcane S2

I’m so excited for Jinx – she’s my favorite character of all time. I love her so much and we’re finally getting new scenes of her and it’s going to be amazing, actually it's going to be more than amazing! I could not be happier.

Hmmm, I’m gonna go with four things I’m excited about

1. My papers next semester: I’m doing a double major in mental health applications and psychological science. I can’t wait to figure out what I’m going to study (timetabling hasn’t opened yet) and what kind of assessments we’re looking at for next year! We’ve been waiting for so long to start study - becoming a psych has been a dream of ours for close on a decade lol

2. A few shows, movies and books that are due out soon: Heartstopper s3, Arcane s2, The Wild Robot, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King has a single showing in one of my local cinema… the next book in Laura Greenwood’s the apprentice of Anubis series is due out really soon, and Beth Crowley’s first novel The Have Not and Onyx Storm (book 3 of Rebecca Yarrow’s Fourth Wing series) are coming out in early 2025.. so we’re very excited for all of those. Whoohooo, new media!!

3. We get to share the DID based design project online really soon! Once it’s formerly handed in we can share it on here for all of you to see - it’s been a year since we started it, and it’s taken so much control not to post full designs on here.. but here is something we did for fun in the meantime

4. And finally, we have our testosterone screening appointment in a couple weeks time! Only been waiting for 5 years lol.

rewatching season 1 of tlovm and fuck it i’m going to liveblog it, i don’t care that i’ll already be absolutely insufferable come friday:

- my brother and i watching this for the fourth time after finally having knowledge of dnd: “oh fince is just a drow….. not a really fucked up looking human……..”

- everything about the opening scene in the tavern makes it so obvious why i fell in love with vax,, the first thing he does is flirt with a hot man and then immediately attack him of course i love him

- they really said “we want to make it as clear as possible within the first five minutes of this show that these twins are bisexual” (and i thank them for it 😌)

- it’s so fun to spot all the matts throughout the show, i really hope they continue that bit in season 2

- it’s wild how recognizable all their voices are to me now… i used to have a hard time connecting the voices to the cast members, but now i’m just like. oh yeah hi it’s you.

- the legend of vox machina song is high-key what made me fall in love with the show

- :0 an airship! (i hadn’t watched much of c3 the last time i watched this show)

- forever and always soft about sam and liam’s kids voicing the little kids on the show

- crazy to hear a child ask liam o’brien “are you a wizard?” and for liam to answer no

- vax being so soft with the children makes me so emotional,, especially when you think about how he never got to have kids of his own/never got to meet any of his nieces and nephews 🙃

- this intro is The Most Intro.

- i am so fine and normal about the raven in the intro actually

- i get so excited about gilmore even before we see him (vex going “please, with the way that man dotes on you” and vax looking all flustered.. i love them)

- i believe in pike and vax sibling dynamic supremacy <3

- my mom decided to walk in during vax and gilmore’s incredibly sexual flirting 😭😩 (she has never watched this show but she knows i’m obsessed with it)

Just Finished:

The Mandalorian - really enjoyed this season, but i've enjoyed every season so far. i think the only time i struggled was the slow start to s2 and the doc episode of this season, but it's been such a great show for the rest of it

Star Trek Picard - this season was exceptional and emotional and everything i ever wanted from Star Trek. i grew up on TNG, these are my people, and i cried so many times this season. a spectacular ending to an enjoyable show

Currently Watching:

Ted Lasso - stuck on season 2 which i am not enjoying as much as season 1, sadly. season 1 was fantastic and i loved it so much, but i am struggling a bit with the second

Elementary - i rewatch this show at least once a year, it remains my absolute favorite procedural cop show and my favorite Sherlock incarnation. it's one of my many comfort shows, and i'm on the last 3 episodes today, so naturally i'm miserable about finishing it again

Xena Warrior Princess - because these aren't streaming and i have them on DVD i'm restricted to watching these eps when i'm in my living room where my DVD player is which, while i'm sick, is not very often, but i am deeply enjoying seeing the show again it's been decades and i love it's glorious cheesiness so much

Gravity Falls - i watch this whenever i get stoned lol

About to Watch:

honestly? i have no idea. i am torn right now between rewatching another comfort show (Orphan Black and Lost are the two frontrunners, have seen both at least a dozen times) or starting something new that i've been told to check out. my brother wants me to watch Arcane or Lucifer, my mutuals are hugely into shows like Barry and Succession and Yellowjackets, and i want to understand everything everybody's saying, but none of them really seem like my kind of show? i'm torn as to what to do. i really miss the old days when i had a dozen shows i got excited about returning every year. things just aren't the same anymore.
