A fit to see Wicked with some friends. The dress code: pink or green!
First time wearing lolita out officially. Ahhhh!!! I’m so glad I have an occasion to wear it so soon after I got it. It’s so true: if you open your mind a little, there are so many situations you could dress like this
The leg warmers doubling as sleeves I thought was a very cool touch. And isn’t it crazy that this bag I thrifted matches the vibe of the jsk perfectly?
So proud of my first coord! Wish I had a black headdress. And other shoes!! But overall really happy with it
> Blouse & JSK: Doll Theater by Honey Machine thrifted on fb
> Bag, Arm Warmers: thrifted on Carousell.
> Shoes: Doc Martens
> Purse: Berry Q
> Accessories: Shopee/Carousell

been trying to get into astrology right and one of the things I’ve been looking into is trying to use my rising/Venus sign to add a lil oomph to my personal style and OUGH
I have two completely different signs for them, I’ve got a Leo Venus and a Cancer Rising and the aesthetics for the two signs are SO wildly different I feel. do not know how to merge both vibes.
SAD!

I’m saving up my Welsh questions so I’m not a total bother!!
1. I can broadly understand why location names in Wales are different in English (colonialism ☹️) but can you explain Castell-nedd v Neath? Maybe I haven’t gotten far enough yet but it seems to be an outlier in that they just dropped a whole part of the name?
2. Cinio v swper, I’m assuming (perhaps incorrectly hence the checking) that cinio = noon meal and swper = evening meal? Is that right or is it backwards?
3. I am deeply interested in the etymology of llun because it appears to be both a picture and (+ dydd) Monday. Are they linguistically connected??
4. Speaking of days. Am I right in inferring that dydd iau means Thursday and ddydd Iau means on Thursday? I can’t quite differentiate why the spelling changes.
5. Speaking of days part two. Nos Mercher v bore dydd Mercher. Why does nos appear to drop the dydd? Does bore ever do the same?
6. Moving away from days. There seems to be no difference between dych chi’n and wyt ti’n as far as I can tell. Are they interchangeable or are they formal/informal like vous/tu? Or is this a dialect thing like different regions??
7. I am learning about eisiau and I have a question about contractions. It appears to be dw i’n mwynhau but dw i eisiau. Why no ‘n?? I know the i’n is i yn so where’s the yn with eisiau? 🤔
Welsh my beloved you are so fun to learn but Duolingo sucks at explaining nuance.
HA okay *cracks knuckles*
1. Location names are always a bit of a wildcard between languages, because sometimes they corrupt differently and sometimes they have wildly different origins and meanings in the first place. Castell Nedd - Neath is actually a relatively mild one; it's just that people abbreviated it more in English than in Welsh. A similar thing happened to Penybont ar Ogwr - Bridgend.
By contrast, Abertawe - Swansea is totally different, with different meanings. Ditto Drefdraeth - Newport, Caergybi - Holyhead, etc. Wild shit.
2. Like a lot of languages, cinio can either mean lunch or evening meal depending on who uses it - the English equivalent is 'dinner'. Younger generations generally mean lunch. Swper is a direct transliteration of supper, though, with the same meaning (I personally use 'te' instead for evening meal). So, in short, you're broadly right, but it's a bit ambiguous.
3. Oh, you'll like this! As far as we know, it's from Proto Indo European lewk, meaning 'bright; to shine, to see' - we also get 'goleu' from it. The theory is that Dydd Llun therefore gets a similar etymology to Monday, because it refers to the moon (lleuad/luna). Llun (picture), meanwhile, is a thing you see, depicting what you see. The fact that they ultimately corrupted into the same word is coincidental.
4. There's some fun stuff here, okay.
So, you are hitting up against everyone's favourite Celtic language quirk which is MUTATIONS ┌(★o☆)┘ These pop up in many funky ways of course. In this instance, it's not a plural but it IS trying to tell you something. So:
Dydd Iau: Thursday
Dyddiau Iau: Thursdays
Fi'n mynd i'r dre ddydd Iau: I'm going to town on Thursday
Basically, the mutation is there to indicate that there's an invisible preposition going on. If we hypercorrected it would be "Fi'n mynd i'r dre ar ddydd Iau", and that's what triggers the mutation; but in modern Welsh it's a quirk of this particular context that we do away with the preposition, because the mutation makes it clear it's there invisibly. Why do we do this? Unknown.
5. This is a slightly weird one and I suspect the answer lies somewhere in the fact that 'night' just means the dark bit while 'day' can either mean the light bit OR a 24 hour period containing both.
But, actually: you can actually drop the dydd for bore, too. It's dealer's choice. BUT, you cannot have the dydd for nos Fercher. In English, the 'day' part of 'Wednesday' is kind of invisible, and just means the 24 hour block. But in Welsh, they're still separate words, and it very much means 'the light part'. So 'nos dydd Mercher' would be like saying 'Wednesday Day Night.'
6. It's formal/plural Vs informal. Chi is formal (or plural), ti is informal.
Occasionally monoglot English Tumblrs make posts about how they reckon we should bring the you/thou divide back to English, and as a person who speaks a language that still pulls this bullshit and occasionally has to play the "How formal am I supposed to be with this person" game, every time it makes me sneer and think about how those same people complain all the livelong day about invisible social rules. You do not want this, folks. Be suitably grateful to your forebears.
7. Ah, yes, eisiau is a law unto itself.
So, the yn/'n in Welsh is normally there because the verb 'to be' gets split in half, and half gets attached to the following verb to make that verb active, right? So for example:
Rwy'n cerdded - I'm walking
Roughly, but not literally, equivalent to the English "I am walking", except if you were to split "Rwy'n" out into "Rwy yn", neither of those words means "I" or "am" - it's not a literal step by step translation.
'Yn' gets bundled in with the verb, more often than not. And again, while this is not a literal translation, it makes the verb into an '-ing' word. Welsh does not distinguish between "I walk" and "I'm walking" - it's always "I'm walking."
But eisiau is different because it's not used grammatically like that. You personally cannot actively want something in Welsh. But, there can be a want upon you. So instead of "I am wanting", you say "There is a want upon me."
So, "I want to go to town": "Mae arna'i eisiau mynd i'r dre".
Duolingo might be asking you to construct that slightly differently, though; they might want "Mae eisiau arnaf i" or something similar. But ultimately that's what it's doing.
I hope this was helpful! Let me know if anything is baffling, still.

The noise of a lawnmower welcomes you out into the vibrant summer day. Your mother is already on the porch, sat on the patio bench. You can tell she’s primped herself up just a little bit. You put the jug of lemonade on the wicker table and stand by the end of the long eat.
“A kind man,” your mother muses beneath the racket of the mower, “about time we got someone decent ‘round here. You know,” she furrows her brow viciously, “those bitches from the cul-de-sac never liked your nana. Hate us even more. Stepford hags.”
You nod and peek over at Steve as he pushes the mower in a straight line. The grass falls to the blade and leaves thick clippings in rows. You twiddle your fingers as you notice the shine of sweat on the man’s forehead and forearms. His act of kindness feels more like pity.
“Don’t be stupid, girl, go grab some cups,” your mother snipes and draws your attention back to the porch. “That man’s going to think I raised a moron.”
You retreat back into the house. For as pleasant as she was to your new neighbour, it has done little for her mood. Or maybe it’s just you.
You grab two of the rippled plastic cups from the cupboard and head back down the hall. You stop as you reflection passes you in the mirror. You turn to face it. You frown. You’re nothing special to look at but you don’t do much to help that. You wonder if you put on some mascara or wore something nicer if you might look anything close to pretty.
You shrug off the fleeting insecurity. It’s not important. Your mother’s sick and your little uncertainties don’t mean anything. You push through the screen door and clack the cups down. As you do, the mower quiets and you peer over. The grass is trimmed neatly as Steve stands close to the steps, wiping his forehead as his cheeks burn rosy form the heat.
“Whew, think I’ll try some of that lemonade,” he climbs the steps, “hot one today.”
As he climbs the last step and he drags his hands down his tee shirt. His grey blonde hair droops forward and he tries to shake it out of his face. He tugs at the hem of his shirt and lifts it over his head, revealing a sweat-dampened undershirt.
“Don’t mind me,” he chuckles as he uses the outer layer to mop his face and neck, “think I overdressed.”
“Get him some lemonade,” your mother hisses and points to the jug. “Steve, was it? What brings you to Heron Meadows?”
You unstack one cup from the other and fill both. You set the pitcher back down and step back on your heel, folding your hands together as you fade into the background. You’re peripheral to your mother. You only exist when she needs you.
“Well, settling down, I think,” he smiles and reaches for a cup. He raises it and stops it just in front of his chest. He carefully gestures at you with it, “thanks.”
Your eyes round and you glance away, “welcome.”
“Settling down?” Your mother echoes coyly.
“I know, I’m a bit late to the game. Had to get out of the city. Maybe I outgrew it,” he sighs, “and you two? Where’s your husband hanging out?”
You mother laughs and crosses one leg over the other, not easily as she struggles to still the shake in her foot, “long gone. He never saw this place.”
“Ah, hope I didn’t hit a sore spot,” Steve’s cheek dimples before he sips from the glass.
“Mm, don’t feel much for the deadbeat,” your mother tisks, “what about you? Settling down? Is your wife coming with the couch?”
“Ah, yeah,” he reaches over to plant his hand against the pillar that connects to the rail. He leans on it and gulps again. He swallows before he continues, his eyes meeting yours for the split second you dare to look up, “missed that step but the house will keep me busy until I figure that out.”
“Oh don’t you worry, that little club will keep you busy,” your mother scoffs, “make sure ya keep your picket fence nice and whitewashed.”
Steve gives a curious furrow of his brow. You mother sniffs as her little quip hangs in the air.
“HOA,” you put in quietly.
“Mm, I bought out of that,” he says. “Outdated if you ask me. I don’t need them telling me what colour to paint my door.”
“Bought out?” Your mother grumbles.
“I didn’t relish the extra lawyer fees but worth it,” Steve explains before he empties the cup and puts it back down, “thanks, that was great. Uh, guess I should get started on the back.”
You stand dumbly as you mother agrees with a grumble. An awkward silence thickens around you and she snaps in your direction with her fingers, “take him out back, honey.”
“Oh, uh, sure,” you clamour forward as if awoken from a slumber. “Just...” you near Steve and step around him to scurry down the stairs. “this way.”
He leaves his tee shirt draped over the railing and turns to follow. He looms like a shadow behind you and as you stop to reach over the top of the gate and unlock it, you scratch around blindly. He steps closer and hooks his arm over yours. The smell of his sweat fills your nose.
“Got it,” he says as he easily unlatches the clasp and the gate slants inward.
You push through, quickly making distance from him as he trails you into the backyard. It’s even worse than the front. You grab the broken mower from where you left it and drag it towards the garage.
“Great, I’ll go grab the mower,” he declares and leaves you to shove your way awkwardly into the side door of the garage. You push the rusted metal inside and the door snaps shut at your back as you emerge back into the sunlight.
Steve pushes through his nice electric mower and you shy away. It’s got to be close to new and no doubt expensive. You trod through the tall grass and as you pass him, his arm brushes yours.
“I could do the eaves too,” he stops beside you. “Get some of these weeds cut too.”
“No thanks,”
“I don’t mind,” he insists.
“I can manage.”
“You can. Probably a lot. Your mom...” he suggests, letting his words hang. “She sick?”
You glance at his chest, the white fabric taught to his muscles above his thick stomach. You nod.
“You take care of her?” He prompts.
“Do my best,” you mutter and traipse on, “thanks.”
“Right, uh,” he calls after you, “well, if you change your mind or think of anything, you can always ask.”
You keep on. He feels bad for you. Just like everyone else. You’ve heard Marge and Lucy on their daily power walk; poor thing, going nowhere, sad...
You go back out front, leaving the gate open. You go to grab the broom from the porch as your mother remains as she was. Her hand trembles on her thigh.
“You know, should clean up around here,” she says, “invite him for dinner as thank you. Maybe tomorrow.”
You take the broom and stop at the bottom of the steps, “maybe tomorrow,” you agree.
“He’s a nice man. Could use one of those,” she smirks, “never had one of those. Handsome to boot.”
It’s strange. You haven’t seen your mother smile since your grandma was around and even then, it wasn’t like this. The way she’s talking is almost ravenous. Like she’s slathering over a pork chop still on the grill.
“Just gonna sweep up the trimmings,” you explain as you drag the broom down the walk.
“Ugh, do whatever, you simple girl,” she chides. “When you’re done, you start on that kitchen. Those damn dishes have been sitting there all day.”
“Yes mother,” you say to the broomstick as you begin to sweep.
The sun beams relentlessly down, pouring onto you like fire. When you’re done, you return the broom to its place against the siding of the house and let yourself inside. Your mother hums as she watches the birds. You should be happy to see her outside, to see her in a better mood, but you’re too uneasy with the presence of that man. You know his name but it doesn’t make him any less a stranger.
You fill the sink and add soap. You plunge a stack of plates into the water and stare out the small window above. You can see the side of the next house. It isn’t much too look at but sometimes a squirrel will critter along the wooden fence top.
As you zone out, hands working mindlessly on scrubbing and dousing, a shift in the foggy colours of your vision brings your eyes into focus. You blink as Steve waves from outside. He rolls the mower up to the gate and smiles at you. You wince, jolted by the reminder of him. You offer a flutter of your soapy fingers.
He stops and stares at you through the window. You blink, uncertain what to do. He’s just looking at you. He winks and you wince at the gesture. He slaps his hand back down on the mower and pushes it through to the front yard. That was odd.
Or maybe you’re just awkward.

Ahhhhh new dress!!!!! Thrifted piece from DokiCherry. It fits so well I’m sooo happy with it!
Despite having a very lolita-esque print, it’s categorized as ryousangata by the brand… and after trying a lolita petticoat on underneath, this was confirmed XD the cut is not really meant for it. So here I just have a small petti to floof it up a bit. I’d say it’s somewhere between lolita and ryousangata.
I really feel like such a cute princess wearing it <3 it makes me so happyyyyy.
I think these shoes are ok, but not perfect. I already ordered some lolita shoes that I hope will go well with it, I have quite big/wide feet so ordering shoes online is always a gamble…
Still amused that a year ago I could not have imagined wearing something so pink 😝 but the cut of this dress fits me so perfectly it feels really natural.
This is the first thing I’ve worn out that is lolita-adjacent… taking small steps to going out in full lolita!! And waiting for my other thrifts to arrive of course.
Ahhhhh I am so happy!!!

juliamat: One year ago today we were kicking off our CAMP DRULIA wedding weekend, and I can taste the s’mores and giggles like it was yesterday🥲🏕️. Here are some moments from the Friday night talent show hosted by @ sydawg and @ joelwaggoner - two of my hilarious and dearest pals who had never met, yet managed to coordinate matching bedazzled denim lewks and host the most joyful and insane show full of surprises and love and happy tears. There were songs, stories, magic tricks, two performances of the court scene from My Cousin Vinny, our families surprising us with an original group poem, college memories, singalongs, prizes, and so much more— in these slides you will see 1) Joel and Sydney performing their meticulously rehearsed Hot Honey Rag 2) DRULIA performed by @ darrencriss @ miavoncriss @ philipsparkle @ iamreedcampbell 3) Joel and myself improvising what we thought might be the title song of Sondheim’s “Here We Are” without knowing anything about it 4) @ sarabareilles gifting us with the most beautiful rendition of “Can’t Help Falling In Love” that Drew and I will weep about for the rest of our lives. The night ended with everyone rushing the stage and scream-singing Wonderwall because what better way to end the show than to say “anyway, here’s wonderwall—“, and I could not sleep that night because I had pure joy shooting out of my heart and eyeballs. Hey @ drewgehling I’m really glad we got married and I think we should find more excuses to go to summer camp with our friends. Happy Anniversary tomorrow ❤️ 9•15•23 📸 @ karenobrist @ thesistersofcedarlakes @ mrjasonmitchell

After darts, things moved upstairs to Alicia's room for an impromptu makeover session. Alicia went quite daring with the boldest basegame eyeliner one could imagine — top and bottom eyelid 😉 — and some setting powder for good measure, apparently?
"Well... What do we think?"
"You look great! You always look great."
"I think you could pull off something a bit bolder..."
Here's where I ramble about the bit of inspiration @moonwoodhollow shared way back when she shared survivors Cora and Rose over a year ago now.
Wow I'm good at making use of sims in a timely fashion! 😏
Berry mentioned Rose's look being inspired by a series called The Tribe which I had never heard of but absolutely would have been obsessed with as a preteen in the aughts because it. has. everything: Kiwi accents, bad child acting, distressed / punk y2k fashion, post-apocalyptic survival, and best of all, no adults. (The premise is that there's a disease or something that wipes out all adults on earth.)
As a present-day adult I was unfortunately only able to make it through maybe 2/3 of the first season (the soundtrack is so very grating — maybe this is what took out everyone's parents?) but greatly appreciated it for what it was, particularly for both its kids surviving the apocalypse premise (which... I'm not sure I'd even introduced Alicia or the Wilds when I put out the call for additional townies survivors last fall, much less revealed that child and younger sims can't be infected by the townie virus, but so much for ever having an original thought once ever in my life!) and — perhaps much more importantly — its makeup lewks.

What are some random headcanons about Janis you have?
HOHOOO DUDE YOU CAME TO THE RIGHT PERSON
disclaimer these are all based on the musical version of her and from a list i made to base her personality off of before i started writing in 2021 so some have changed and whatnot anyhoo
-she met regina in ballet class when they were three. they went to the same preschool too (but different elementary schools)
-the ‘on wednesdays we wear pink’ also started in preschool
-she started working out in her senior year for the SOLE purpose of clocking bigots with as much force as possible
-her dad died when she was four (i haven’t included it in any of my fics but he died from some heart disease kinda shit bc why not)
-she’s GREAT at english, okay at history and piss poor at math and science
-in college she starts dyeing the blonde bits of her hair funky colors with temporary dye and then just before she graduates she cuts it all off and has shoulder-length hair for a solid 10 years lol
-she reads about alien conspiracy theories in her spare time
-she has a WILD sweet tooth
-she’s clumsy AF
-her dad was french so she actually speaks french fluently but pretends not to so she can stay in an easier class (and also stay in damian’s class)
-she’s lactose intolerant
-she refuses to acknowledge this
-she sent flowers to regina after the bus without putting her name on them
-she and kevin have a secret handshake
-she steals damian’s and cady’s jackets a lot, most of the time without realizing. and cady’s doesn’t fit so she uses it as a blanket most of the time
-she’s terrified of needles so she gets all her tattoos and piercings on impulse when she gets random bouts of courage
-she’s secretly kind of a horse girl
-the blonde hair used to be all blonde bc she dyed it when she was plastic but now it’s grown out and she just plays it off as part of her lewk ✨✨
-she’s wildly claustrophobic
-afraid of lots of little stupid things (geese, nougat, etc)
-likes horror movies bc they make her feel tough
-her birthday is october 17 :3
-she does yarn crafts (like knitting and crochet and cross stitch and shit) to get her angries out bc stabby stabby
-she and damian were always friends but she had to live a double life of her own to keep him safe from the plastics
-GIRL CAN DAYUUUUUUNCE. damian choreographs random routines all the time and makes her learn them so he has someone to do them with. janis secretly likes it
-she collects paintbrushes. she has a paintbrush graveyard in a shoebox for all the ones that are too frayed to use
-she always has paint somewhere. it never makes sense.
-post canon she and gretchen are workout buddies
