It seems you can give up on all of your dreams and still be happy, as long as you're a good enough person to be rich in friends and family.
Can you believe it took me this long to watch it? Dated, sure (I think nowadays there'd be less establishing of his life and more time in the alternate universe), but timely as ever. Yes, I cried.
(I did find it amusing that one of the signs that the town had gone bad was... JAZZ!)

With the feeling of having experienced something immense, something that has haunted me since that last fade to black, after having wrapped myself in all that vibrant chaos, I keep thinking about Anora. There is something so mesmerising about Sean Baker's gaze and the tenderness with which he treats his characters that I cannot help but be moved.
Ani, as brilliantly written as she is acted, is portrayed with an emotional complexity that shatters any standard. Her face reflects the broken expectations, the violent disconnect between what one wants to be and what one is expected to be, and a mixture of determination and vulnerability that feels deeply human.
At a certain point, the punch comes. Baker, who has always walked comfortably on the edge of comedy and tragedy, delivers in Anora what feels like his sharpest work yet. At the edge of the abyss, everything shines, clinging to the hope that this time, the fall won’t happen.
As one of the films I have enjoyed the most —and one that has hurt me the most— in a long time, I am already eager to see it again. And in the meantime, an image keeps repeating in my head: Ani's, Mikey's, in that car after everything has happened, trying to find meaning, connection, in a world that constantly refuses to know us.
