Enjoy reading your film reviews! Of the horror films you watched (recently or generally), which ones had a good opening hook? That kind of thing seems pretty important for the horror genre.
Since it's still fresh in my mind, I'm going to have to go with The Hidden (1987). Saying that is a bit of a spoiler, because I didn't know The Hidden was a horror/science fiction movie at first.
I'd never heard of it before. It just came up in our group movie night and I expected some kind of police thriller. I'm going to spoil the opening hook under the cut, but I think people might be better served to watch the movie knowing as little as possible like I did.
Before that, a message to my other readers: I write a lot about movies nowadays over on Letterboxd. Friends run a movie night every Monday and Tuesday that runs a large spectrum of film, and I've gotten into the habit of logging each one with a written review. It's also gotten me back into the mood of watching movies on my own time, so I've already written about almost 90 movies this year alone.
If you like my writing, it's a good place to get a little more of it. Consider following me! You can even get my Letterboxd reviews as an RSS feed! And unlike my tumblr posts, which can meander and ramble, I try to keep my Letterboxd reviews (mostly) short and to the point.
So the opening of the movie follows this businessman in a trench coat. It opens with him robbing a bank, brazen as can be. He waltzes in with a shotgun, demands they hand over their money, openly smiles for the security cameras, walks out and gets in his Ferrari.
He floors it, cops now hot on his tail, and he leads them on a joyride around Los Angeles. He's got a hot sports car, he's blasting heavy metal, and seems to be having a lot of fun giving the cops the runaround and has little regard for the safety of anyone else.
The cops step up their pursuit, trapping him in a road block. 20 or 30 officers line up and open fire on his Ferrari as it comes into view. The guy gets totally shredded by bullets from the driver's seat, but he refuses to stop. He plows through the roadblock at full speed, wrecking his car and several police units.
The Ferrari rolls to a stop not even a block away. The guy throws the money onto the sidewalk and stumbles out of the car, bleeding profusely. He stands up, looks at the cops, and just laughs. They open fire on him once more, and the Ferrari EXPLODES, engulfing the man in a huge fireball.
We get some back story on the guy. Turns out he was a normal dude who seemed to love his job and kept to himself, until one day he just snapped. Many such cases. He had a nervous breakdown, stole six cars, robbed multiple banks, and was probably coked up or something.
We cut to the hospital. He's in a coma. They don't know if he'll recover. He's covered head to toe in third degree burns and gunshot wounds. He's in a room with another guy that's recovering from a triple bypass.
Suddenly, our burn victim guy sits up. He shouldn't be able to stand, but he gets out of bed, walks across the room to the triple bypass dude, and opens his mouth over the guy's face.
Four big, hairy, spider-like legs emerge from his mouth, pulling out a long, wet, slug-like parasite. He forces the bypass guy's mouth open, and the slug crawls out of the burn victim and into the bypass guy.
Burn victim instantly drops dead. Bypass guy's eyes snap open. He rips the monitoring equipment off, grabs the nearest set of clothes, gets dressed, and leaves.
And I just about lost my mind.

It's not the most horror-y horror movie, but damn. Hell of an opening. The rest of the movie is kind a buddy cop detective story that's John Carpenter's The Thing meets the first Terminator movie. Really, really fun.

Normally I wouldn’t even think to do this but since this guy who essentailly copied my entire online presence doesn’t actually seem to be willing to admit fault or take any real accountability for the weird shit he’s been up to i’m just gonna post it all.
Tumblr media
To recap:
I find out someone is stealing photos of my vinyl and comics and uploading them to twitter and reddit as his own. he has been flat out stalking me online for 5 year since he was 14, for some reason assimilating my entire taste into his own fake internet persona he’s created just for clout, passing it off as being “inspired” while essentially impersonating me. Some examples of this include:  - Deliberately taking usernames that i use and using them on other sites impersonating me -  Copying entire profiles of mine, even down to taking a whole list of favorite artists and pasting it to his own 1:1 - copying entire playlists on Spotify, recreating them and posting them as his own - Lying about every facet of his life to make it seem as close to mine as possible, even his age saying he was 29 instead of 19 because i guess he wanted to be the same age as me and also saying he’s from new york instead of saudi arabia - Plagiarizing film/music reviews from people on RYM and Letterboxd, even from some of my friends, and posting them on his own Letterboxd and Album of the Year accounts passing them off as his own. - Recently I also just found out his previous twitter account was banned for stealing digital art from other people and taking credit for it When called out, he blocks me on twitter and makes his account private, also on reddit after I called him out. I post comments on other profiles attempting to commicate with him, all of which get removed within minutes. He finally responds to DMs a full 15 hours later with a half assed apology, essentially using his mom’s cancer and his depression as a shielf to absolve himself of any actual blame and guilt trip me into forgiving him. The guy only apologizes for stealing photos and nothing else, but it’s okay since he was just “inspired”. I was thinking about just letting it go and checking every once in a while to make sure he actually stopped, But I figured maybe if put him on blast it’ll actually teach him a lesson since this shit is obviously deeply embedded in his psyche and isn’t going to change overnight just beause he says it will. https://linktr.ee/charnsuka here’s his linktree with all his urls, but just in case he deletes that: Tumblr Twitter Spotify RYM (now banned apparently) Letterboxd AOTY Last.fm Reddit
